Demonstrations held against Scientology

Protesters gathered outside Scientology buildings across Canada on Saturday, partly inspired by a loose collective of Internet pranksters who have accused the Church of controlling the lives of followers.

Dozens of protesters in Montreal wore masks to protect their identity. They alleged the Church intimidated critics and pressured members not to leave.

"I think we're bringing attention to them and showing what kind of evil actions they're carrying out," said one man.

Up to 150 protesters -- also wearing masks -- gathered outside the Church's Canadian headquarters in downtown Toronto, as police kept watch.

The Church, which has frequently taken legal action against critics, has called the allegations a hate crime.

"'Anonymous' is perpetrating religious hate crimes against Churches of Scientology and individual Scientologists for no reason other than religious bigotry," the church said in a statement.

It also said the "altruistic purposes" claimed by Anonymous were "no different than those heard from any terrorist or hate group."

Similar protests were held in other Canadian cities like Winnipeg, and in 13 other countries around the world.

All in all it was a very good day. :D

I was worried about Anonymous in the beginning (because I was concerned that some of their actions might be detrimental to the larger critic movement) but it turns out that Anonymous conducted themselves very well overall, and earned the respect of many, many people. And they did a very good thing today.

No. Anonymous did a GREAT thing today.

There are lots and lots of pictures of the event on the message board at Operation Clambake, starting about here, in this thread.

BTW - this is on "the drag" right near where the weekend campus carry protests and counter-protests happened. Its been there forever, at least since my youth. I used to regularly go to a bookstore next door (where part of SLACKER was filmed) and the arcade next to that. I have friends who, needing a job so badly, got involved at the base level there of standing out on the sidewalk giving out flyers (not even trying to lure neophytes in) and they said they got spit on some times. Across the street and just a few yards north looms the UT tower from which Whitman made his sniper's nest.

Police arrest woman who crashed car into Scientology building (VIDEO)

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman is in custody charged with criminal mischief after police say she crashed her car into the Church of Scientology building at the intersection of Guadalupe Street and W. 22nd Street Monday night. The incident was reported to authorities at 9:00 p.m.

Even though the driver left the scene, police were able to track 31-year-old Erin McMurtry down a few hours later.

Cathy Norman, director of special affairs at the Church of Scientology of Texas, says the crash appeared to be “deliberate,” after staff noticed the car was parked outside for 30 or 40 minutes before it crashed into the building.

The car crashed through the glass front doors, went through the elevator lobby and crashed into furniture. Norman says the car then backed out of the building and then left. “Obviously it’s a real pain how to figure out to board up the front door at 10 o’clock at night. I don’t know why people would treat other people that way,” Norman added.

Police are still trying to determine if McMurtry intentionally ran into the church.

That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
