Again, think of New York City in the days of Scorcese’s “Taxi Driver”. If the uptown posh Marquee has Eastwood’s “PLAY MISTY FOR ME” spelled out in big block letters and the downtown gritty section of the city has Metzger’s “MISTY BEETHOVEN” on its’ marquee, perhaps this is a happy accident.
Perhaps not.

In the ‘70s, when Ford told NYC to “drop dead”, what was going on in the Empire City? Who was running the Avon Cinema on 42nd Street and for what purpose? Is it a happy accident that Davian’s “Night of Submission” accurately mirrors Maury Terry’s Process/SOS cult theory of the Son of Sam murders? Perhaps. The movie ran endlessly throughout ’76 at the Avon theaters. Terry believes the Sam cult liked to film their exploits. Were psy ops a tool of this cult? This deserves research.

NIGHT OF SUBMISSION (1976)
Director: Joe Davian

Adult films of the Golden Age, from both the East and West Coasts, spawned a number of bizarre mixes of hardcore sex and the supernatural. Witches, black magic rituals, Satan worshippers and voodoo cults were featured in a number of favorite classic porno films, including this one. NIGHT OF SUBMISSION plays like a shoddy low-budget horror film with raunchy sex included, and at only 55 minutes, doesn't wear out its welcome.

Breslin has longed claimed to have been present at RFK's assassination, and claims in this March 2, 2011 interview that Sirhan acted alone:

ImageBreslin was among the journalists in the kitchen pantry of the Ambassador Hotel when RFK was murdered.

Sirhan’s attorney, William Pepper says there is evidence suggesting there was a second gunman who fatally shot Robert Kennedy. Do you believe this is possible?

It sure didn’t happen, and the attorney is displaying brilliance by coming up with something that didn’t happen. Unfortunately, Sirhan held the gun too far out for all to see to deny that his actions were alone.

On June 5, 1968—you were part of the group that helped subdue Sirhan…

He had the gun–and they wrestled it from his grip and threw him on a steam table
in the kitchen of the hotel. Roosevelt Grier, the football player, brought his arm down and pinned him to the table. It was a rather large arm.

Sirhan’s eyes and arms were thrashing wildly.

I was sitting on his legs. By accident.

By accident?

I was in the crowd and then suddenly I got thrown on to the table.

Is the memory of that day stay always with you?

I mean I can put it out of my mind, but it all comes back when people bring it up.

Do you think that Sirhan should he ever be paroled?

It was quite an act—long time ago. I’m not sitting on the parole board—but an act of tyranny against the country is awfully hard to lift. Kennedy is keenly missed. He should not have been shot, I will tell you that.

Not casting aspersions, and he may well have perceived it that way, but it is a strange coincidence. Brez also happened to be on hand when 911 went down and published a nice eyewitness account in the Oct 25, 2011 Rolling Stone:

I was nearby, on Liberty Street, when that happened. . . .

hmm..

Jimmy Breslin was also instrumental in writing the early script that would become The Warren Report.

Please, let's all take a moment to curse bob woodward.

The troubling things I learned when I re-reported Bob Woodward’s book on John Belushi.
By Tanner Colby | Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 5:42 AM

A little more than a week ago, during an interview with Politico, Bob Woodward came forward to claim he’d been threatened in an email by a “senior White House official” for daring to reveal certain details about the negotiations over the budget sequester. The White House responded by releasing the email exchange Woodward was referring to, which turned out to be nothing more than a cordial exchange between the reporter and Obama’s economic adviser, Gene Sperling, who was clearly implying nothing more than that Woodward would “regret” taking a position that would soon be shown to be false.

A rather trivial scandal, but the incident did manage to raise important questions about Woodward’s behavior. Was he cynically trumping up the administration’s “threat,” or does he just not know how to read an email? Pretty soon, those questions tipped over into the standard Beltway discussion that transpires anytime Woodward does anything. How accurate is his reporting? Does he deserve his legendary status?

I believe I can offer some interesting answers to those questions. Thirty-one years ago, on March 5, 1982, Saturday Night Live and Animal House star John Belushi died of a drug overdose at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles—which, bear with me a moment, has more to do with the current coverage of the budget sequester than you might initially think.

Two years after Belushi died, Bob Woodward published Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi. While the Watergate sleuth might seem an odd choice to tackle such a subject, the book came about because both he and Belushi grew up in the same small town of Wheaton, Ill. They had friends in common. Belushi, who despised Richard Nixon, was a big Woodward fan, and after he died, his widow, Judy Belushi, approached Woodward in his role as a reporter for the Washington Post. She had questions about the LAPD’s handling of Belushi’s death and asked Woodward to look into it. He took the access she offered and used it to write a scathing, lurid account of Belushi’s drug use and death.

When Wired came out, many of Belushi’s friends and family denounced it as biased and riddled with factual errors. “Exploitative, pulp trash,” in the words of Dan Aykroyd. Wired was so wrong, Belushi’s manager said, it made you think Nixon might be innocent. Woodward insisted the book was balanced and accurate. “I reported this story thoroughly,” he told Rolling Stone. Of the book’s critics, he said, “I think they wish I had created a portrait of someone who was larger than life, larger than he was, and that, somehow, this portrait would all come out different. But that’s a fantasy, not journalism.” Woodward being Woodward, he was given the benefit of the doubt. Belushi’s reputation never recovered.

Twenty years later, in 2004, Judy Belushi hired me, then an aspiring comedy writer, to help her with a new biography of John, this one titled Belushi: A Biography. As her coauthor, I handled most of the legwork, including all of the interviews and most of the research. What started as a fun project turned out to be a rather fascinating and unique experiment. Over the course of a year, page by page, source by source, I re-reported and rewrote one of Bob Woodward’s books.

Spielberg used Saturday Night Live's John Belushi as the star of '1941' and then Belushi seems to have been finished off with the equivalent of a 'hotshot' by an informer just before he was going to make a movie where an FBI agent is the drug dealer.

According to Alex Constantine, there was going to be a drug set-up publicity bust of Belushi, Robin Williams, and Robert DiNiro but it didn't happen.

Once the soon-to-be-too-hot-politically Belushi was as dead as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and John Lennon and thus a new poster child for 'counterculture's self-destructive excess,' a certain Naval Intelligence officer named Bob Woodward took time out from writing about politics as a leading Mockingbird in 1984 to write 'Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi' and hype the image of the drug-riddled slob who just couldn't help himself in a youthful atmosphere of un-Reaganesque permissiveness.

What perfect timing to have a moral outrage decoy for Ollie North and Vice President Bush's cocaine smuggling and death squads, ay?...

Son of Sam speaks out: "There was a battle going on inside me"

David Berkowitz terrorized New York City by killing six people and wounding seven others in seemingly random shootings from 1976 to 1977. Now, four decades after he was arrested, Berkowitz speaks out about what led him to kill, his life before he turned into a murderer, and life in prison today in "Son of Sam │The Killer Speaks"  a CBS News special to be broadcast Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
"I see that people will never understand where I come from, no matter how much I try to explain it," Berkowitz tells CBS News correspondent Maurice DuBois in his first major TV interview in a decade and his only interview about the 40th anniversary of his arrest. "They wouldn't understand what it was like to walk in darkness."

Using firsthand accounts from shooting victims, police and reporters, "Son of Sam │The Killer Speaks" relives the fear that paralyzed many New Yorkers as word spread that someone was committing random shootings -- all done with a high-power .44 caliber weapon. The killer hit strangers, often couples in parked cars, and the women usually had long, dark brown hair. The shooter was dubbed the ".44 Caliber Killer" by New York newspapers. For a while, as the victim count rose, the only substantial clues police had were two letters: one sent to Detective Joe Borelli, the head of the task force looking for the killer and the other to newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin, then at the New York Daily News.
"I should have been dead," says Robert Violante, who was shot on July 31, 1977 while sitting in a parked car with Stacy Moskowitz, who later died from her injuries.
"Effectively, it was him winning over us each time he got away with it," says former NYPD Detective Bill Clark.
Before he was captured, Berkowitz lived alone in Yonkers, where he admitted to feeling "isolated." "I didn't see it at the time," Berkowitz says. "I was just very lost and confused. There was a battle going on inside me."
The shootings, he tells DuBois, were "a break from reality, thought I was doing something to appease the devil. I'm sorry for it."

Berkowitz also wants to distance himself from the "Son of Sam" moniker he was tagged with during the killing spree. "As far as I'm concerned, that was not me," Berkowitz says. "That was not me. Even the name, I hate that name, I despise the name."
Which name, Dubois asks. "That moniker, Son of Sam," Berkowitz says. "That was not -- that was a demon."
DuBois sat down with Berkowitz at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, New York, where he opened up about what led to him to pull the trigger. Berkowitz is serving 25 years-to-life for each of the six murders.
In an extensive interview, Berkowitz talks with DuBois about the impact finding out he was adopted had on him, about his outreach inside and outside of prison walls, and how the world has changed around him. For instance, in the time since he was incarcerated, cellphones and the Internet have proliferated.  "That's all space-age stuff to me," Berkowitz says. "I'm from the dark ages. You know, when I left, tokens on the subway, you know, yeah?"
And, because he's been there so long, Berkowitz says many of his fellow inmates don't know who he is.  "Some guys, they're not even familiar with the case," Berkowitz tells DuBois. "I'm just another face in the crowd."
Berkowitz, a born-again Christian, reveals how he feels about the pain he caused the families of those he killed and his victims and whether or not he takes responsibility for what happened.
DuBois asks Berkowitz, now 64, what he would tell his 23-year-old self if he had the chance to go back and do so. "Ugh, turn around before it's too late because destruction is coming," Berkowitz says.

Ed Opperman seems to be one of a small cadre of torch bearers who are continuing this twisting investigatory path ( dead end(?)) in various private forums & discussion groups - has a couple of non-free interviews germane to that - the latter being slightly more interesting than the former
