Bald Eagles Are Stealing Trash from a Seattle Landfill and Dropping it in the Suburbs

Residents understandably want a solution. The only good one might be for them to learn how to better manage their trash.

By Avery Thompson
Apr 4, 2019

People living in the Seattle suburbs are having to deal with a unique nuisance: Residents are reporting that bald eagles have been dropping trash into their yards, and no one is quite sure how to deal with it.

The main issue is the open-air landfill in the area, the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in King County. That landfill was supposed to have been closed years ago, but a proposed expansion has kept it open. In fact, that expansion is meant to keep the landfill exposed until 2040.

In the meantime, over two tons of trash are brought to the location every day, and the free food has attracted hundreds of bald eagles and other large birds. Landfill staff estimate that around 200 eagles have made the area their home, scavenging for anything they can find and dropping their scraps everywhere else.

At a recent meeting, one resident held up a biohazard container filled with human blood—one example of the kind of waste carried by eagles into residential neighborhoods.

Many of the residents want the county to cancel the proposed expansion and finally close the landfill. In the meantime the residents are hoping to implement some sort of anti-eagle measures at the landfill, although it’s not entirely clear what those would look like.

There’s something almost poetic about the American national bird reminding people that the trash they throw in a landfill doesn’t simply disappear. In a way, these birds are a visceral demonstration of the usually hidden consequences of extreme consumption. We create too much trash, and that much trash creates consequences. That could mean eagles dropping biohazard containers in your front lawn, or it could mean nearly 20 tons of plastic washing up on one of the most remote beaches in the world.

While some short-term solutions like closing a landfill or pulling trash out of the ocean might temporarily fix the problem, the only way to really live in a world where our trash doesn’t come back to haunt us is to be smarter about how much of it we create.

And symbolically appropriate, our National Bird airlifting and dropping a message to headquarters at the other Washington.

Ancient 4-Legged Whale With Otter-Like Features Found Near Peru

(CN) – The ancient ancestors of whales and dolphins once had four hoof-shod legs, according to a new study published Thursday.

Researchers found a four-legged whale in marine sediments in Peru that date back 42.3 million years, providing insight into the evolutionary antecedents of the marine mammals and their dispersal throughout the ancient world.

“This is the first indisputable record of a quadrupedal whale skeleton for the whole Pacific Ocean, probably the oldest for the Americas, and the most complete outside India and Pakistan,” said Olivier Lambert of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

Most biologists hold that cetaceans, which include dolphins, whales and other marine mammals, originated in South Asia more than 50 million years ago and evolved from a small quadrupedal animal with hooves.

The whale found in Peru boasted hooves at the tips of its fingers and toes, and its leg and hip morphology suggested it was capable of walking on land. Yet, the creature also had long appendages at the tail and feet, similar to that of otters, that suggested it could swim adeptly as well.

The findings are published in the scientific journal Current Biology.

The discovery of the intact skeleton goes in large part to Mario Urbina of the Museo de Historia Natural in Peru, who first discovered the Playa Media Luna — a desert area close to the Pacific coast Urbina thought would be ideal for fossil hunting.

In 2011, Urbina and an international team of biologists went on a field expedition to the area, eventually leading to the excavation of the remains of an ancient whale since named Peregocetus pacificus. It means “the traveling whale that reached the Pacific.”

“When digging around the outcropping bones, we quickly realized that this was the skeleton of a quadrupedal whale, with both forelimbs and hind limbs,” Lambert said.

The team also used other fossil remnants found in the area to help date the skeleton at approximately 42 million years old, which means the creature roamed on land and sea during the middle Eocene.

The skeleton measured in at about 12 feet long. Several anatomical details indicated the creature was amphibious.

For instance, the vertebrae in the tail had similar features to that of the sea otter or a beaver, suggesting it used its tail to help propel it in the water.

Regarding the discovery and its pertinence to the creature’s dispersal along the ancient world, researchers say the combination of the geological era in which the creature lived and its discovery along the western coast of South America demonstrate that early cetaceans reached the Americas via the South Atlantic.

Suspected rhino poacher killed by elephant then eaten by lions in South Africa, authorities say

Park authorities in South Africa said they recovered the remains of a suspected rhino poacher they believe was killed by an elephant before his remains were devoured by a pride of lions earlier this week.

In a statement released by South African National Parks on Friday, the park service said the family of the victim said they were informed of his death by his alleged accomplices.
The family said they were told the victim had been "killed by an elephant" while he and his alleged accomplices were in Kruger National Park, which is located in northeastern South Africa and is one of Africa's largest game reserves, to poach rhino on Tuesday.

The family then notified local police, who arranged a search party shortly thereafter, the park service said.
It wasn't until Thursday morning that officials were able to find the victim's body after receiving further information when four of the victim's alleged accomplices were arrested the day before.
"During this search, which was boosted with a further compliment of Field Rangers, the remains of a body were discovered," the park service said. "Indications found at the scene suggested that a pride of lions had devoured the remains leaving only a human skull and a pair of pants."
The managing executive of Kruger National Park, Glenn Phillips, extended his condolences to the victim's family in a statement.
"Entering Kruger National Park illegally and on foot is not wise, it holds many dangers and this incident is evidence of that," Phillips said in a release. "It is very sad to see the daughters of the [deceased] mourning the loss of their father, and worse still, only being able to recover very little of his remains."
The victim's four alleged accomplices are currently in custody and will "appear in court in due course," the park service added.

Bees found hiding in woman's eye, feeding on her tears

A woman in Taiwan was suffering from eye pain and reduced vision due to an unlikely and horrifying issue: four tiny bees found hiding behind her eyelid and consuming her tears.
Taiwanese news agency CTS says the woman sought medical assistance for a swollen left eye a few hours after she felt something enter her eye while she was tending to a relative’s grave.
A doctor noticed something in the eye and then pulled out the first of four “sweat bees” – each no more than four millimetres long.

In addition to affecting the woman’s vision, the bees were also causing a skin infection and eroding her corneas. Doctors say she could have also developed a fever and central nervous system, and may have needed to have the eye removed if she waited longer before seeking help.
The woman is expected to make a full recovery, according to a CNN report citing Taiwanese media.
Also known as Halictidae, sweat bees are so named because they typically consume human sweat. Pest control company Orkin says the salt and moisture of sweat helps them supplement their diets of pollen and nectar. Tears contain similar salt and moisture content to sweat.
Halictidae are both common and tiny, averaging about one centimetre in length. They do not produce honey, but are capable of stinging and swarming humans, and can be found in most parts of the world, including Canada.

Killer whales feast on the livers of great white sharks — just one orca sighting can keep the sharks away for a year

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that the mere presence of orcas in the water led to a noticeable absence of great white sharks.

The researchers behind the study monitored the waters in the Pacific Ocean off the Farallon Islands near San Francisco, where great whites are known to hunt for elephant seals. They found that if a pod of orcas came along, the sharks fled their preferred hunting grounds and didn't come back until the following year.

"It's a bit ironic — when we think about white sharks, it's hard to imagine they are risk-averse," Salvador Jorgensen, a shark expert at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. "But this study shows that even for these massive predators, knowing when to pull out and flee is an important part of their repertoire."

There’s a new alleged Russian spy. It’s a beluga whale.

April 29 at 8:09 AM

BERLIN — When Norwegian fishermen spotted a beluga whale last week, there was nothing that immediately indicated a national security threat.

But when the whale defied normal behavior and continued to harass their boats, the fishermen spotted a strange harness, wrapped around the whale’s body. “Equipment of St. Petersburg,” read an inscription on the harness they later recovered, according to Norwegian media outlets.

Or maybe it escaped and is seeking asylum.

Marine specialists believe this white beluga whale filmed approaching fishing boats in Norway could have received military-grade training by the Russian navy. The whale, which was first sighted near the Norwegian village of Inga, was wearing a strange harness bearing the words 'equipment of St Petersburg'. The fisherman said the whale, which was tame and accustomed to people, attempted to pull ropes and straps from the sides of the boats.
