2010: the year of the Earthquake?

Although as Ameri-centric as the media is, we'd have to wait until San Andreas falls into the ocean for 2010 to be called that...

Strong quake hits eastern Turkey

A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 41 people, officials have said.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the village of Basyurt in Elazig province at 0432 (0232 GMT). It has been followed by more than 30 aftershocks.

Elazig Governor Muammer Erol said the majority of deaths had occurred in the nearby villages of Okcular, Yukari Kanatli and Kayali.

Rescue teams have been deployed amid reports of people trapped under rubble.

Mr Erol said many people in the affected villages lived in mud-brick homes built on hillsides, which were especially prone to collapse.

"Villages consisting mainly of mud-brick houses have been damaged, but we have minimal damage such as cracks in buildings made of cement or stone," he told CNN Turk television.

At least 17 of the dead came from the largest village, Okcular, where up to 30 houses collapsed, rescuers said.

"The village is totally flattened," Okcular's administrator, Hasan Demirdag, told NTV.

Yadin Apaydin, the administrator for Yukari Kanatli, also said his village had been devastated.

"Everything has been knocked down - there is not a stone in place," he told CNN Turk.

At least 100 people have been taken to hospital, officials say. Some were reportedly hurt during the panic after the first earthquake, when they jumped from windows or balconies.

The local disaster management centre has already sent blankets and tents to the area to provide emergency shelter for survivors.

Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek and three other ministers are also travelling to the earthquake zone to provide assistance.

Turkey is plagued by earthquakes - generally minor - because of its location on the North Anatolian fault line.

A 7.4-magnitude tremor which hit the western city of Izmit in August 1999 killed more than 17,000 people.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Istanbul says poor quality buildings were also blamed for the high death toll then and there is still concern in Turkey's largest city, where seismologists predict a major earthquake will occur within the next few decades.

So what do we know at this time? We know that there may be extraplanetary events preceding earthquakes, such as coronal activity as prelude to Chile's. Some quakes may set off others.

The Chile and Haiti quake occurred on the same longitude. One near "conception / Concepcion" the other near "hades / Haiti".

Lots of other quakes occuring this year, though not as dramatic. What is being communicated? Or is this non-anomalous?

When I think of 2010 I think of the movie 2010, the star child. Conception. Lots of fusion reactor news earlier this year.

The news cycle on these quakes are also interesting. Watching how the media are playing these out can be quite telling ... don't want to panic the masses, got to keep them spending

Once again, can't say you haven't been warned.

Look for a quake on the West Coast of the Pacific very soon. We may even have 2 or 3 6.0's radiating north from LA all the way to Alaska.

The Earth is changing and the continent's are moving and we have no choice but to accept it but that means first you have to accept the fact that it's happening, which many of you won't. Which I kind of find is funny because you'd think with some of that shit that gets thrown around and supported in this Forum it wouldn't be that hard to believe.

You'd think something as elementary as the Land masses moving was like proving the divinity of Jesus Christ. :jumping:

Were not looking at something like the movie 2012 but more of a prolonged, multi year movement of the Earth's crust.

Absolutely true.....except as 3/4 of Humanity have forgotten, this process DOES NOT STOP.

what I find kinda odd is how the "ring of fire" is so active along every area except one...

Wow, you're right, jd. Even Alaska is relatively quiet. Not good, too unbalanced.

My friend is moving to Florida, so I was googling around yesterday on Florida's history of earthquakes (which are few), and saw something about the water in wells there rising at about the same time as the big Alaska earthquake back in the sixties.

Good plan, Peregrine. I can't remember the stats, but the percentage of Californians and BC residents who have braced or secure-strapped their hot water heater to a wall (as recommended to ensure a potable water supply) is VERY small.

Huh, good point. I shall run this past my landlord today.

I'm not sure what the significance of the density of the magenta lines is on that diagram, but if you count the magenta boundaries in the Atlantic, down around the tip of Africa, up east of Africa a ways, and then around Australia to the south Pacific, I'd estimate that it's at least equal to the most active part of the Ring of Fire.

So I'd say you are wrong in saying "every area except one" -- at least half of those plate boundaries are relatively quiet, if I read that right, including the west coast of North America.

What it amounts to is that we've just been lucky.
