MANHATTAN (CN) – Between the decoy passport, his status as a convicted sex offender and untold assets of over half a billion dollars, Jeffrey had been an unlikely candidate for bail pending trial on sex-trafficking charges.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman made that denial official Thursday, easing the fears of victims who protested Epstein’s bid to hole up at the $77 million New York mansion prosecutors have marked as a crime scene.

“I find that the government has established danger to others and to the community by clear and convincing evidence,” Berman said, reciting his ruling this morning at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse.

Finding a risk of flight by “preponderance of the evidence,” Berman noted that the sex offender’s safe included an Austrian passport bearing his image but another name and listing a Saudi residence. Epstein self-reported more than $500 million in assets to a still-unidentified financial institute, but he would not provide a forensic accounting of his untold wealth unless granted bail.

The refusal hardly came as a surprise: Berman rejected a similar package three years ago in the case of gold trader Reza Zarrab, who wanted to await his trial for the biggest money laundering scheme in U.S. history in a Manhattan high rise.

In the Zarrab case, Berman found that such pretrial accommodations would “foster inequity and unequal treatment” in the criminal-justice system, and those concerns had been amplified with Epstein.

The Miami Herald’s investigative series “Perversion of Justice” reignited interest in a secret plea deal Epstein struck with the government a decade ago, allowing him to plead guilty to state-level prostitution charges instead of a federal indictment accusing him of the serial sex-abuse of underage girls.

Florida’s work release program allowed Epstein to serve out most days of his 13-month sentence outside his county jail cell, and an attorney for one of the financier’s new accusers alleged he had sexual relations during that release with young women over the age of consent.

I suppose he's got an appointment coming up sometime sooner rather than later with the suicide squad. I imagine scripts being presented and rejected til one just reich, relating poor Jeffrey's deteriorating mental state, his inability to cope, brought him to his end by his own hand. Or El Chapo's.

This whole Terra Mar project seems pretty half baked, but here she is hawking it at the UN. Gives a bit of a "front for child sex trafficking" vibe, and charity was of course the weapon of choice of Jimmy Savile too, let us not forget.

A British socialite who has long denied she was involved with Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sexual abuse of underage girls told a federal appeals court that the media’s “furious feeding frenzy” justified keeping documents from a defamation suit by an alleged victim secret.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of publishing magnate Robert Maxwell, on Wednesday asked for a rehearing by a full panel of the appeals court in Manhattan of her request to keep the filings, which run about 2,000 pages, from the 2015 case sealed.

The dispute stems from a lawsuit against Maxwell by Virginia Giuffre, a Floridian who claims Epstein sexually abused her for two years starting in 2000, when she was 16 years old, and that Maxwell participated. Giuffre sued Maxwell in 2015 after the socialite publicly called her a liar.

A three-member appeals panel ordered a federal judge to publish the documents. The ruling was handed down three days before Epstein’s arrest on sex-trafficking charges. The filings could shed light on Giuffre’s claims that prominent politicians and business leaders joined in Epstein’s alleged abuse for years.

“The media have shown an insatiable appetite for any shred of information/speculation to publish and broadcast since Mr. Epstein’s arrest,” Maxwell said. “They have published articles speculating Ms. Maxwell may be the subject of the ongoing criminal investigation of Mr. Epstein.”

The media’s intense interest in the case after Epstein’s arrest justified keeping the documents sealed, she said. The longtime friend of Epstein cited a Miami Herald article speculating she may have been involved in the alleged crimes or could be named as a cooperating witness.

Josh Schiller, one of Giuffre’s lawyers, said in a statement that the New York-based appeals court rarely overturns a decision by one of its panels.

“There is an overwhelming public interest both in getting access to these documents as well as the indictment of Mr. Epstein and his prosecution,” Schiller said. “I anticipate that this will merely be a short delay before the decision is affirmed.”

Maxwell also said that Giuffre, in anticipation of the documents being made public, filed “irrelevant documents solely to advance her ulterior, non-litigation profit purposes.”

The press interest could result in “due process concerns” for Epstein and other potential prosecution targets and witnesses, she said.

The documents were filed in connection with a summary-judgment motion in Giuffre’s case, which was eventually settled. They could provide new information about Epstein’s alleged trafficking ring. Prosecutors say it involved dozens of girls, some as young as 14.

Giuffre first accused Epstein in December 2014 when she attempted to join a civil suit filed by two of the money manager’s alleged victims who sought to nullify a federal non-prosecution agreement he struck as part of a guilty plea to lesser state charges.

In her request to join the suit, Giuffre included descriptions of abuse by Epstein and other individuals, “including numerous prominent American politicians, powerful business executives, foreign presidents, a well-known Prime Minister, and other world leaders,” the appeals court said in its July 3 ruling.

Giuffre also filed a defamation suit in April against Epstein’s longtime lawyer and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz after he denied claims that he abused her. That case is pending.

Epstein has denied the allegations. More than a decade ago, he served 13 months in a Florida state prison after getting a secretive non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in 2007 and pleading guilty to state prostitution charges.

The appeals court case is Giuffre v. Maxwell, 18-2868, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (New York). The district court case is 15-cv-7433, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

ground I could barely speak. Suddenly, his tone
took on an air of familiarity. It reminded me of
my father’s—surprised and concerned all at once.
Until that moment and in spite of our narrow
relationship, I believed Maxwell was charming and
very engaging. Yet that one gesture gave me a
different perspective of her personality. Perhaps, it
also gave me an insight into her character.

Dershowitz writes panicky op-ed in anticipation of a New Yorker ‘hit piece’ about him and underage girls

Trump-defending attorney Alan Dershowitz has written an op-ed for right-wing publication Newsmax that reveals the New Yorker is working on an expose about him and women who have accused him of having sex with them when they were under 18 years old.

In the op-ed, Dershowitz accuses New Yorker editor David Remnick of commissioning “a hit piece against me for the explicit purpose of silencing my defense of President Trump, Prime Minister Netanyahu, and the State of Israel.”


Dershowitz then claims, without offering any evidence, that “Remnick explicitly told people that I must be silenced because mine has been the most persuasive voice in favor of what Remnick feels pose dangers to values he holds dear, and that he will use the credibility of The New Yorker to accomplish this goal.”

“Four years ago, a woman who I had never met was ‘pressured’ — her word — by her lawyers to falsely accuse me of having underage sex with her,” Dershowitz writes. “They expected a big payday, but I was able to prove from travel records that I could not have been on the Caribbean island, New Mexico ranch, or other places where she perjuriously claimed we had met… Having seen the initial accusation demolished, her lawyer told people he was trolling for a second accuser because ‘two is better than one.’ This time they ‘found’ a real doozy: a woman who had tried to get the New York Post to publish her claim that she had sex tapes of Hillary and Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Richard Branson.”

Dershowitz’s op-ed concludes by warning his supporters to not believe anything written about him whenever the story is finally published.

“So when you read The New Yorker attack on me, read it with an understanding of its source, motive, and methodology,” he says. “Remember that you are not reading The New Yorker of old that had well-earned credibility. You are reading a glossy version of the National Enquirer, with partisan and personal agendas.”

George Nader, Witness in Mueller Probe, Hit With New Charges of Sex Trafficking

The key cooperator faces additional child-porn charges in a new indictment to be unsealed Friday.

George Nader, who was a key witness in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, has been hit with new federal charges of child pornography, sex trafficking, and obscenity, according to a person familiar with the case.

The charges come on top of separate child-porn charges leveled by the same prosecutors last month. The new indictment is set to be unsealed Friday morning in the Eastern District of Virginia, according to the person.

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nader’s attorneys declined to comment. Nader is expected to enter a plea on the charges this morning.

Nader, a 60-year-old Lebanese-American businessman with deep political and financial ties to the United Arab Emirates, was a key cooperator in Mueller’s probe of foreign influence in the 2016 election. Nader met several times with individuals associated with the Trump campaign throughout the election and into the early days of the administration. He spoke with officials and advisers on matters ranging from a pitch by a foreign firm for the campaign to use social-media manipulation to regime-change in Iran. (He met with Donald Trump Jr. and other campaign advisors about the plan, which included a proposal to use fake avatars to garner support for Trump, but Trump officials deny they ever considered it.)


He also helped broker a key meeting between Erik Prince, the former Blackwater CEO, and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of one of Russia’s sovereign wealth funds, in the Seychelles in January 2017. That meeting came under intense scrutiny by Mueller’s team and was described in its report as one of the ways the Russians tried to influence the incoming Trump administration.

Federal prosecutors in Virginia argued last month in court that Nader should be held in jail before trial, based in part on his prior criminal history. That history includes a 2003 conviction in the Czech Republic on charges of abusing minors, including a charge of transporting of a minor boy to the U.S. for sexual purposes. Federal prosecutors said Nader has had “hands-on contact with more than a dozen minor boys.” Nader’s lawyers called the U.S. government’s argument weak because he was later acquitted of the Czech sex-trafficking charge.

Nader is also charged with transporting child pornography—a charge he’s faced in the past. In 1984, Nader was indicted for possessing child pornography in D.C. The charge was later dismissed after his attorneys argued that the material was found through an illegal search conducted on Nader’s possessions at Dulles International Airport. In 1990, again at Dulles, law enforcement caught Nader with films featuring minor boys. Nader pleaded guilty the following year.

Nader most recently faced allegations of possessing and transporting child pornography in 2018. Authorities stopped him at Dulles in January of that year and questioned him about his time working with the Trump team. Soon after, Nader began cooperating with Mueller, and in the spring of 2018 he departed for Dubai, where he lived until he attempted to re-enter the U.S. last month.

When stopped at Dulles, the FBI executed a search warrant on Nader’s electronic devices, including three iPhones. After analyzing the phones, the FBI found 12 videos that appeared “to be visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” according to a criminal complaint filed in 2018 that remained under seal until last month.

Nader is also charged with violating federal obscenity law.

On June 3, he was arrested at JFK International Airport in New York and transferred to a Virginia jail, where he remains locked up.

Last month, prosecutors told a court that FBI agents found dozens of child-porn videos on one of Nader’s phones, with some depicting children as young as 3 years old.

I asked what his social life had been like recently, and he mentioned a dinner party at the Manhattan townhouse of Lady Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of the late British media baron Robert Maxwell. The guest of honor, said Mr. Chatwal, was Prince Andrew, who told a “quite humorous” joke involving Pepto-Bismol and his brother Prince Charles’ girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles. (One good trick for finding obscure information and old news articles is to use Google and set a custom time range for results. In this case I have set the date range from 01/01/1900 to 01/01/2005, for example.)
