EL PASO, Texas — The Fort Bliss commander says two people were shot at a small grocery store before the gunman was killed on the West Texas Army post.

A 60-year-old civilian was shot and killed by security guards, Army officials told NBC News.

According to the officials, after shooting the two women at a "shoppette" a convenience store in a small shopping center, Army civilian security guards ordered the suspect to put down his weapon. The suspect apparently refused and got into a car when the guards shot and killed him.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. declined to reveal the conditions of the victims or discuss other details of the Monday afternoon shooting.

Simonelli said the area was roped off for an FBI investigation, but the sprawling facility next to El Paso was never under lockdown.

Simonelli says the shooting was reported about 3 p.m. local time and authorities responded in about three minutes.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
