Toni Colette is a wonderful actress and always good to watch.

Don't forget The Witch, and Rosemary's Baby, and Don't Look Now!

Hereditary is currently my favorite film of 2018, and it's going to take a real whomping showstopper to top it.

^^Speaking of 'Don't Look Now" (which I haven't seen yet, unless it's the one I'm thinking of), there's a movie that freaked the hell out of me as a kid, but I can't remember its name. All I really remember of it is that it starts with the daughter choking on something and the mother trying to save her by cutting a hole in her throat. Any ideas?

'Don't Look Now' is a classic; remember seeing it in D.C. w/my father when it was released and was blown away. One of the best films (not just horror genre) ever made, imo. 1973-74; It stands the test of time.

Mandy might be the whomping showstopper you're waiting for, although it's working on an entirely different set of receptors. The mood and the world-building are extraordinarily effective. Such commitment. A set of profane pop cultural interests made holy, like the weirdest guy at some suburban pit party turns out to be a genius poet. What a haunting movie. Among its unique qualities: spasms of the wildest gonzo humour inside a deathly solemn framework, presenting the perfect coordinates for late-stage Nic Cage. (Andrea Risborough is wonderful too.)

Beyond the Black Rainbow had the driest of punchlines; this has a bunch of them. I love it to death.

Yes! That's the one. :yay

I was born the same year the film was made btw, but growing up in Norway I had access to only one TV channel, and they weren't exactly up to date on the entertainment front. I probably watched it in the mid-eighties.

I do miss the Finnish theater productions for TV though (haha, just kidding. "Finnish TV theater" is still a meme for "incredibly boring TV" in Norway).

Since I'm on a roll I'll risk asking about another movie I can't remember the title of. Pretty sure I asked before and no one knew, but you never know. It's a low budget horror about two hitmen, one young and new to the game, and one older, more experienced dude, and they're hired to kill a guy.
There's a long scene with them sitting at the kitchen table waiting for their victim to come home, with the older guy telling a story with a jump-scare at the end, and when they finally meet the guy they're supposed to kill they realize they're in way over their head. SPOILER:They find the remains of an infant in the guy's outhouse, and it turns out he's a powerful magician/satanist.
It has a bit of a Kill List vibe to it.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the recommendations, I'm off to find Full Circle and Don't Look Now.

The Ghoul - UK film. Really one of the more original horror films I've seen in the past few years, a no-budget achievement.

Not surprisingly, it turned out to be the directoral debut of Gareth Tunley, the writer behind "Kill List."

Per the plot, the less said the better.

'Suddenly Last Summer'; film adaptation of Tennessee Williams play. Incest, lobotomy, repressed memory, homosexuality, homophobia, cannibalism, etc...(not) the usual Hollywood 1950’s/60’s subjects. Scared the mierda out of me when I was a teenager and watched it on t.v.

Gore Vidal wrote the screenplay; during filming, his drafts had to be reviewed/approved by a Catholic priest. Clip of Vidal, and Taylor's harrowing experience (spoiler alert).

Hold the Dark, on Netflix, is definitely of a certain something!

Kind of a literary, low-key, austere horror thriller, set in deeply rural Alaska, at a time when the days are about five hours long.

Beautifully shot and acted. Lots of mysteriousness left unresolved, so if that's a problem for you, perhaps best to avoid.

Personally, I loved it.

^^The Borderlands is excellent. It has one of my favorite endings to a horror movie. I think it's called Final Prayer in the US btw.

I started watching Ghost Stories, but actually had to turn it off because I was getting too tense watching it (the night watchman segment. That bed at the end of the room. Gaah!). Will try again at some point. In the middle of the day. In summer.
