No need to thank me, Smiles. So many shootings daily! And so many very disturbed like the fellow from Texas legally bear arms. It's too bad the NRA became so radicalized in the late '70s; they once were an organization all could respect. Hell, if it wasn't for the NRA and their good work back in the '30s to get machine guns banned, many of these mass or spree killings would be far deadlier, as fully automatic weapons would have been available to all.

(Yes, I know they are still illegally available for a price)

82, it does seem we are becoming more accustomed to atrocity. And have become all but numb to their horrific reality. Which in one sense is good but in all others, bad. Good, so you'll be able to function without puking when it hits the fan; Bad because it's not going to get any better and will only get worse. See this. It shocked me. Smiles, I had not yet read the Alternet article when I submitted my last comment. Thank you. I haven't read Alternet in a very long time. Whitefish in Kalispell County was the hometown of the murderer of my son and his friends nine years ago, March 25th. Capitol Hill Massacre.

Vester Lee Flanagan Filmed TV Attack, Then Shot Himself

A former employee of a Virginia television station filmed his murder of two journalists and broadcast it to the world before shooting himself.

Vester Lee Flanagan filmed his murder of two journalists on live television and then broadcast it to the world through social media.

The following video only shows Flanagan approaching journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward. The Daily Beast has edited out the moment Flanagan raises his gun to shoot.

A former employee of a Virginia television station filmed his murder of two journalists and broadcast it to the world before shooting himself.

A second video posted by Flanagan shows rest of the shooting. Interview subject Vicki Gardner of the local Chamber of Commerce was wounded but survived and is now in stable condition.

Flanagan worked at WBDJ-TV with Parker and Ward but under the name Bryce Williams.

Twitter and Facebook suspended Flanagan's accounts shortly after he posted both videos and a string of tweets decrying his former employer and Parker as racists.

Police said in a statement they began pursuing Flanagan shortly before 11:30 a.m. on the highway. Flanagan refused a traffic stop, sped off, and crashed. Police found him with a self-inflicted gunshot and at first reported he was dead. Later police found a pulse and said Flanagan is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

ABC News said it recieved a 23-page fax from Flanagan and turned it over to authorities.

Law enforcement will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. to discuss the case.

Earlier tonight I had said to my husband that the news was too depressing and I couldn't wait for the Mr. Robot finale, then I found out it was postponed b/c of "similarities" between the show and what happened in VA today. So yay, a spoiler AND we don't get to see it for a week.

Not sure of labour law in the US, but do they have to pay the crisis actors higher rates for pretending to die on a Sunday? Seems weird that the things spike on Sundays in that case.

This would not qualify as a spree shooting, nor a mass murder, which as Stefano has pointed out requires four or more fatalities. It was a double murder followed later by a suicide.

All unnecessary and a vulgar way to deal with one's issues, regardless their nature.

Six campers were killed at a rural Texas campsite and the man who lives on a neighboring property is charged with murder, police said Monday.

Deputies found a man and a woman dead in a travel trailer when they investigated a reported shooting just after 7 a.m. along County Road 2217, about 100 miles southeast of Dallas, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. One woman from the group had survived the night, but four others were still missing early Sunday.

William Hudson, 33, currently faces one murder charge after six campers were found dead near his property in rural Texas, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators captured William Hudson, 33, from the plot next door to the private campsite, charged him with one count of murder and held him on a $2.5 million bond. Deputies discovered the bodies of the four missing people in a pond behind Hudson’s home Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials in the sheriff’s office haven’t released the names and ages of the victims. Investigators also haven’t determined how they were slain or figured out why Hudson may have killed them, Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said at a press conference Monday, according to KYTX-TV.

The family of Hannah Johnson identified Johnson, her boyfriend Thomas Kamp, two of Kamp’s kids, Johnson’s six-year-old son Kade and her father Carl Johnson as the homicide victims in an interview with the Sun Journal of Lewiston, Maine.

The group of seven people was camping on land Johnson and Kamp had bought after she moved to Texas to live close to her retired parents, two former University of Maine at Farmington employees, according to the Maine newspaper. Johnson’s mother Cynthia Johnson suffered minor injuries and spent Sunday night in a county crisis center after alerting police that morning.

Carl Johnson, 77, was one of six people found dead on land owned by his daughter Hannah Johnson and her boyfriend Thomas Kamp, his family told a Maine Newspaper.

Thomas Kamp and Hannah Johnson, Johnson's father Carl Johnson, her 6-year-old son Kade and two of Kamp's children died in the homicide, Johnson's family told a Maine newspaper.

Hudson had faced assault charges in recent weeks, and the killing is the bloodiest crime ever reported in Anderson County, officials in the sheriff’s office told KYTX. The Dallas Police Department and the Texas Rangers are helping with the investigation.

Acevedo said ongoing training is key to the department’s success, including for active shooter situations, for which law enforcement strategies are changing.

“More often than not in recent years, people aren’t interested in negotiating, people aren’t interested in holding hostages, people are only interested in causing as much death and injury as they can,” he said.

Now officers responding to a shooter are trained to engage right away rather than waiting to assess the situation or for more officers to arrive.

“I don’t think it’s completely taken hold [in law enforcement], but I think it will quickly spread across the country,” Acevedo said. “The idea and the reality that the days of just sitting there and assessing and waiting and sending in robots when we have active shooters, you can’t do it.”

The police department also formed a Counter Assault Strike Team. Its members are spread out around the city and are specially trained to deal with shooters.

I'm not a fan of Art Acevedo but I actually agree with him regarding what he says in most of the quote above. I'm not sure about the "Counter Assault Strike Team" as this is the first I've heard of them.

In the quotes below ... I agree with him on the good use of Mental Health Unit ... my wife saw this first-hand at a workplace. But as the article states, there are a LOT of troubling issues between the community and local police here. And his comments about sexual assault victims ... bugs me.

Acevedo said his department's success limiting gun violence was due to the work of its mental health unit, which partners with outside organizations to monitor and help individuals who may be a danger to themselves or others. He also said it has extensive trainings with university and school district officers so the different departments are on the same page. Acevedo went on to highlight the department's efforts to build relationships of trust with the community (though the police have recently come under fire for their use of force in several incidents).

As Acevedo and others call for tighter gun control policies, Texas is loosening restrictions with a new law expanding concealed carry on college campuses. Acevedo spoke out against the legislation, and took heat in February when he suggested that one of its potential consequences is that sexual assault victims could also become murder victims if their attackers are legally allowed to carry guns.

And as I've said I am VERY concerned about the upcoming UT Tower shooting anniversary and the new campus carry situation...

The state campus carry law will go into effect on Aug. 1, the 50th anniversary of the UT Tower shooting.
