Tragic Cambridge professor John Tiley fell to his death from the roof of the faculty building he regarded as ‘his baby’, his widow said.

The 72-year-old Queens’ College fellow, one of Britain’s top tax law experts, was found dead on the ground outside his office at the Sidgwick site on Sunday evening after a day with his wife Jillinda.

Mrs Tiley, a 70-year-old fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, said she had no idea why her husband apparently took his own life.

She said Prof Tiley gave no indication of anything being wrong as he left their home on Sunday evening, saying he was going to a rehearsal for a play in a local church.

But instead he got onto the roof of the law faculty building and fell and his body was found around 6.45pm.

Police broke the news of the tragedy to Mrs Tiley later the same evening - four days before their 49th wedding anniversary.

Mrs Tiley, who had three children and six grandchildren with her husband, said: “I’m just in total shock.

“I just have absolutely no idea what brought this on. It’s just beggars belief.

“He was a scholar. He loved his students, he loved his work, he loved his family and his grandchildren.

“He was a wonderful husband and a wonderful father. There was never a dull moment with him.”

Prof Tiley, who was emeritus professor of the law of taxation, had received a CBE for his work.

PINEDALE, Wyo. - There is still no sign of a missing hiker from a well-known
Western political family.

James "Randy" Udall, 61, signed in at a trailhead Wyoming's Wind River Range
June 20 for a solo backpacking trip. He was scheduled to return one week ago, on
June 26, but did not. He was reported missing June 28.
The search area is 225 square miles.
Udall is a brother of Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, cousin of New Mexico Sen. Tom
Udall, and son of the late Arizona Rep. Morris "Mo" Udall.
Udall is an alternative energy advocate and environmentalist from Carbondale.
He's an experienced backpacker who has hiked the Wind River many times over the
past 30 years.
Searchers say the weather is in Udall's favor. It's been warm, with nighttime
temperatures dipping to freezing only at the very highest elevations.
Udall is 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with gray/brown hair and blue eyes. If
you have been in the Wyoming backcountry recently and have seen a man matching
this description, contact the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office at (307)367-4378.

Senator Mark Udall may be the most prominent member of his famous political family in the state, but he's hardly the only notable Udall to call Colorado home. His brother, Randy Udall, is a nationally known environmental activist whose opposition to fracking is only one of his passions.

Right now, however, the main focus for Randy is survival. He's been missing in Wyoming since June 26, when he was expected to return from a hike, and efforts to find him are intensifying with each hour.

As noted by the Aspen Times, Randy, who resides in Carbondale, served as the original director for the Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE). He also co-founded the Association for the Study of Peak Oil-USA, under whose auspices he was scheduled to speak in Golden this past March on the topic of "Halliburton & the Mancos Sea: Shales R Us -- Or Are They?" In talking about big oil companies, he said, "They've hijacked our energy future, chained us to a drilling rig, and thrown away the key."

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_23595721/randy-udalls-body-recovered-wyoming

Randy Udall Authorities Wednesday located the body of
U.S. Sen. Mark Udall's brother, Randy, who was reported
missing on a solo backpack trip to the Wind River Range
in Wyoming.
The body of the 61-year-old Carbondale resident was
found at 10,700 feet, his poles still in his hand, his
sister, Dodie Udall of Boulder, said.
Randy appeared to have died from a medical condition,
she said. An autopsy has been scheduled.
"Randy left this Earth doing what he loved most: hiking
in his most favorite mountain range in the world," the
Udall family said in a statement. "The entire Udall
family is touched beyond words by the tremendous
outpouring of support from people around the country."
Randy was the second of six Udall siblings born to
Morris "Mo" Udall, who served three decades in Congress,
and Denver native Patricia Emery. Mark, the eldest, was
born a year before Randy.
The family exchanged e-mails, calls and texts after
learning Randy's body had been located.
"We're talking about how sad we are and how Randy is
very much in our hearts right now," said Dodie, who is a
year younger than Randy. "It's a big tragedy. I'm
devastated."
Randy Udall had hiked the Wind River Range in Wyoming
for more than 30 years, often going up once a month to
fish and climb. His climbing exploits, along with many
others, were chronicled in the book "Climb: Tales of Man
Versus Boulder, Crag, Wall and Peak." He always left his
route details with family, and early indications are
that he stuck to the plan on this hike as well.
A long-time advocate for renewable energy, Udall helped
found the nonprofit Community Office for Resource Energy
Efficiency, which promotes the use of renewable energy
in western Colorado. He also was the co-founder of the
Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas and was
one of the oil experts interviewed by the National
Petroleum Council when they researched their 2007 report
called the "Hard Truths about Energy."
"Randy had a brilliant mind and was an inspiration to
those of us in the environmental community," said Matt
Garrington, a longtime energy advocate. "He could take
on the most complex, arcane issue on energy and deliver
a commanding speech with humor, simplicity and urgency.
Colorado has lost a true visionary, and he will be
missed."
JP Strait, a CORE energy programs specialist, said Udall
was an inspiring man with tremendous passion for the
environment.
"He made me want to achieve more," Strait said.
Strait was among those who attended a silent prayer
vigil for Udall on Wednesday night at Carbondale
Community School, planned before news broke of the grim
discovery.
"We were all hand-in-hand," he said. "There were a lot
of emotions."
Authorities had been searching for Randy since his wife,
Leslie Emerson, daughter of climbing legend Dick
Emerson, called Wyoming authorities last Friday. She
said she expected to hear from him late Wednesday or
Thursday, but there had been no word.
Tip Top Search and Rescue of Pinedale, Wyo., coordinated
the search with resources that included ground teams and
aerial sweeps with two helicopters. A helicopter spotted
the body.
Randy and his wife have three children in their 20s:
Ren, Tarn and Torrey. Ren and Randy's brother, Brad, had
gone to Wyoming after he was reported missing, and they
notified family members Wednesday, Dodie said.
An article this week in Rock & Ice, about climbers,
talked in detail about Randy's and the senator's
expertise in mountain climbing and technical ascents.
Both at one time were Outward Bound counselors.
The two also shared a passion for the environment; their
uncle Stewart served as secretary of the Department of
the Interior under President Kennedy.
Randy Udall's home in Carbondale was retrofitted with
solar panels that he often said would keep 300,000
pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere over 20
years.
Mona Newton, executive director of CORE, has known Randy
Udall for 18 years. She noted that Udall was involved
deeply with a methane capture project at a Colorado coal
mine and turned that energy into electricity. Last year,
Aspen Skiing became the first in the nation to convert
waste methane into energy on a large scale.
"He was an environmentalist in the best sense of the
word," she said. "He was really grounded in his
connection to the natural world. He was unafraid to
challenge us in what we were doing."

Death

The exact events and circumstances that led to his death are not clear. What is known is that Bloomfield was found dead of a drug overdose in his car on February 15, 1981.[5] The only details (from unnamed sources) relate that Bloomfield died at a San Francisco party, and was driven to another location in the city by two men who were present at the party. His tombstone is in the Hillside Memorial Park, Culver City, near Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Postby Pele'sDaughter » Mon Aug 05, 2013 3:43 pm

http://exopermaculture.com/2013/07/27/s ... naby-jack/

(Reuters) – Barnaby Jack, a celebrated computer hacker who forced bank ATMs to spit out cash and sparked safety improvements in medical devices, died in San Francisco, a week before he was due to make a high-profile presentation at a hacking conference.

The New Zealand-born Jack, 35, was found dead on Thursday evening by “a loved one” at an apartment in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood, according to a police spokesman. He would not say what caused Jack’s death but said police had ruled out foul play.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office said it was conducting an autopsy, although it could be a month before the cause of death is determined.

Jack was one of the world’s most prominent “white hat” hackers – those who use their technical skills to find security holes before criminals can exploit them.

His genius was finding bugs in the tiny computers embedded in equipment, such as medical devices and cash machines. He often received standing ovations at conferences for his creativity and showmanship while his research forced equipment makers to fix bugs in their software.

Jack had planned to demonstrate his techniques to hack into pacemakers and implanted defibrillators at the Black Hat hackers convention in Las Vegas next Thursday. He told Reuters last week that he could kill a man from 30 feet away by attacking an implanted heart device.

“He was passionate about finding security bugs before the bad guys,” said long-time security industry executive Stuart McClure, who gave Jack one of his first jobs and also had worked with him at Intel Inc’s McAfee, the computer security company.

“He was one of those people who was put on this earth to find vulnerabilities that can be exploited in a malicious way to hurt people,” McClure said.

Jack became one of the world’s most famous hackers after a 2010 demonstration of “Jackpotting” – getting ATMs to spew out bills. (reut.rs/gIGXVq) A clip of his presentation has been viewed more than 2.6 million times on YouTube.

Two years ago, Jack turned his attention to medical devices, while working on a team at McAfee that engineered methods for attacking insulin pumps. Their research prompted medical device maker Medtronic Inc to revamp the way it designs its products. (reut.rs/sM9mTE)

The U.S. government also noticed Jack’s work.

“The work that Barnaby Jack and others have done to highlight some of these vulnerabilities has contributed importantly to progress in the field,” said William Maisel, deputy director for science at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

Jack’s passion for hacking sometimes got him into trouble.

In 2012, he connected his laptop to a gold bullion dispensing machine at a casino in Abu Dhabi, according to fellow hacker Tiffany Strauchs Rad. She said Jack had permission from a hotel manager to hack the machine but security intervened.

It turned out the hotel did not actually own the gold machine and the American Embassy had to be called in to help resolve the misunderstanding, Rad said.

“He would hack everything he touched, she said.

“BELOVED PIRATE”

Jack’s most recent employer, the cyber security consulting firm IOActive Inc, said on its Twitter account: “Lost but never forgotten our beloved pirate, Barnaby Jack has passed.”

Jack had been scheduled to present his research on heart devices at Black Hat on August 1. Last week, Jack told Reuters he had devised a way to hack into a wireless communications system that linked implanted pacemakers and defibrillators with bedside monitors that gather information about their operations.

“I’m sure there could be lethal consequences,” Jack said in a phone interview.

He declined to name the manufacturer of the device but said he was working with that company to figure out how to prevent malicious attacks on heart patients.

Jack’s sudden death drew responses from the hacking community reminiscent of those that followed the suicide of hacker activist Aaron Swartz in January.

Dan Kaminsky, a well-known hacker, described the death as a tragedy. “Barnaby was one of the most creative, energetic, diverse researchers in our field,” he said.

“You’ll be missed, bro,” tweeted another well-known hacker Dino Dai Zovi.

Jack’s sister, Amberleigh Jack, who lives in New Zealand, told Reuters her brother was 35 years old. She declined to comment further, saying she needed time to grieve.

Black Hat said that it will not replace Jack’s session at the conference, saying the hour would be left vacant for conference attendees to commemorate his life and work.
Don't believe anything they say.
And at the same time,
Don't believe that they say anything without a reason.

Zurich Insurance’s Wauthier Committed Suicide, Police Say
By Elena Logutenkova - Aug 27, 2013

Pierre Wauthier, chief financial officer of Zurich Insurance Group AG (ZURN), probably committed suicide at his home, according to police. He was 53.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death “clearly pointed to a suicide,” Marcel Schlatter, a police spokesman for the canton of Zug, Switzerland, where Wauthier lived and was found dead yesterday, said by telephone today. He declined to disclose further details out of consideration for the family.

Wauthier is the second top Swiss executive in five weeks to have taken his life after Carsten Schloter, 49, chief executive officer for Swisscom AG (SCMN), Switzerland’s biggest phone company, was found dead at his home on July 23. Wauthier, a married father of two, was appointed CFO at Switzerland’s largest insurer in September 2011 after previous roles as group treasurer and head of centrally managed businesses.

“The board of directors, group executive committee and all of our colleagues are deeply saddened and pass on our condolences to the family and relatives,” Chief Executive Officer Martin Senn said in a statement yesterday.

Schlatter said that Wauthier lived in Walchwil, a municipality on the eastern shore of Lake Zug. The citizen of Britain and France had joined Zurich Insurance in 1996. Vibhu Sharma, group controller, will take over as CFO on an interim basis, according Zurich Insurance.

Wauthier, who held a master’s degree in international finance from l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales and a Masters in private law from the Sorbonne University in Paris, began his career at KPMG in 1982, according to Zurich Insurance’s website. He worked for two years at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and joined JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) in 1985, before taking on the job at Zurich Insurance.

Zurich Insurance, based in Zurich, said on Aug. 15 that floods in central Europe and tornadoes in the U.S. contributed to a 27 percent decline in second-quarter net income to $789 million, missing analysts’ estimates.

Switzerland's leading telecommunications company says its chief executive has been found dead in an apparent suicide.

Swisscom says the body of 49-year-old Carsten Schloter was found Tuesday morning at the CEO's home in the Swiss canton (state) of Fribourg.

A company statement Tuesday says "the police are assuming it was a case of suicide; an investigation into the exact circumstances is underway."

Swisscom, a publicly traded company in which the Swiss government has the majority stake, says no more details of his death were being disclosed in consideration for his family.

Schloter joined Swisscom in 2000 as head of Swisscom Mobile and was appointed CEO in 2006.

The company says deputy CEO Urs Schaeppi would temporarily lead it.

Orwellian Ireland

Saturday June 11, 2005 15:56author by Brian Nugent

"I believe that spies, the security services, in the world generally, are becoming increasingly powerful and that our civil liberties are being eroded." Justin Keating...

...Of course one reason to target the business community is that it could operate as a cut out mechanism in their attempts to influence Irish politics. What I mean is that they can use a business person to bribe a politician say and the hand of MI5 behind the bribe will not be readily visible. MI5 have clearly a big Irish presence and even on the appointment of Manningham Buller as the Director they recruited another 200 agents to work on Irish affairs.(11)

Then there are a number of references to the big American agencies in Ireland. The CIA is possibly the most famous of those groups and the one with the most power internationally. In the New York Times in 1977 it was reported by John Crewdson that they controlled:

"at least one newspaper in every foreign capital at any given time,” one C.I.A. man said, and those that the agency did not own outright or subsidize heavily it infiltrated with paid agents or staff officers who could have stories printed that were useful to the agency and not print those it found detrimental.

In fact, the CIA’s influence in the international media was probably much greater than its influence in the U.S. This was because the CIA was prohibited by law from certain actions in the U.S., whereas it was relatively unrestrained outside the country." (12)

Victor Marchetti the CIA dissident showed their influence on the Italian Secret Services :

"They are trained, for example, to confront disorders and student demonstrations, to prepare dossiers, to make the best possible use of bank data and tax returns of individual citizens, etc. In other words, to watch over the population of their country with the means offered by technology. This is what I call techno-fascism."
(13)

It is rumoured that concern to cover up garda CIA links is behind the delay in investigating the issue of garda collusion in the death of the RUC officers Breen and Buchanan, from Phoenix again:

"It is from here [the Dundalk garda question] that the story of CIA-Garda cooperation is likely to emerge if the man against whom allegations in relation to Breen and Buchanan is asked under oath, and in public, to recall his life and times in the Special Branch."(14)

It is presumably this CIA-Garda Special Branch connection that the magazine is referring to when it hints at garda involvement in the Equatorial Guinea coup affair.(15) Its also rumoured that many intelligence forms have gone missing that detail this corrupt relationship between the CIA and garda Special Branch. The affair includes over 100 Irish passports given to the CIA.(16) ...

There are also two British intelligence agencies which operate exclusively in Ireland North and South. One of them is called the 14th Intelligence Company, closely associated with the SAS it has about 150 members :

" The 14th Intelligence and Security company, known to it's secretive members as 'The Det' (short for Detachment, another cover name) is still part of the group of ad hoc units involved in various dirty tricks on both sides of the border. The Det's speciality is covert methods of entry, bugging and unattributable killings. Like the now better known FRU it is an "all arms" group which is British military terminology for a unit which draws members from naval, air force or army personnel." (19)

It is considered: " The oldest Dirty Tricks British army unit in the North"...."The Det was the most political formation in the British forces because of its unique chain of command and control....rested ....with the Director of Special Forces who reported direct to Downing Street."(20) ...
...............
Later, when Mrs Thatcher personally organised British military as well as political strategy in Ireland after the IRA hunger strikes, Kerr, promoted to lieutenant colonel, took command of the counter terror group, subsequently renamed and reorganised as the Force Research Unit. Like another controversial colonel, Oliver North of Iran-Contra fame, Kerr was moving in high political circles, outside the normal military chain of command. Mrs Thatcher visited his secret unit headquarters at Lisburn (time and date noted in the unpublished bit of the Stevens report) to speak to him about his work and shake the hands of his operatives ...

...British spies, with the approval, or possibly on the direction of at least some political leaders, were running a campaign of sectarian assassination since the days of Edward Heath, the Downing Street incumbent when the first dirty tricks unit, Kitson's MRF, was set up."
(23)

As regards domestic agencies it has been stated that Special Branch, 'controls' Garda HQ (24) and that the practises of the secret police dominate the actions of the gardai. This is seen in the use of slander for example. From the Phoenix at the time of the succession to Commissioner Byrne:

" In the conspiratorial world of political policing, anonymous tip-offs, mysterious alliances and byzantine plots are the stock-in-trade. The choice of recipients of leaks is interesting. In the normal course of events, a smear campaign against a politician or a subversive would be given verbally to a selected journalist who would run the story but this cannot be done when the smear stories are about litigatious senior garda officers. Instead, the anonymous scribes have targeted politicians and lawyers ...

Use of Modern Technology

Similarly as people do research on the internet as opposed to in libraries the capacity to monitor a persons research greatly increases. It is reported by Alain Lallemand in the Belgian newspaper Le Soir that as part of the Echelon network the western agencies monitor all internet traffic at the main internet exchanges.(79) Note that some people would say that monitoring all internet traffic in this way is impractical because of the huge computer power needed but I beg to differ when the way this is probably accomplished is considered. There is no requirement to store the actual data that would travel across the exchanges, as web page requests for example, all you need to do is store the IP numbers and details of who is requesting a given webpage on a given date. The data actually on the webpage can always be looked up again later by those agencies using a comprehensive web archive like http://www.archive.org which in all probability they use. So in other words they are only storing web addresses and corresponding IP numbers of people who read the pages not the raw data and this can be stored as something like a simple flat text file which of course requires very little computer space. In so far as the contents of emails are unique (meaning they are probably capable of screening out spam and forwarded emails very successfully) they would have to be stored but again until the recent advent of broadband they were usually not very large and I think it is within the scope of echelon to cache them in their entirety.

One problem would have been internet voice calls which would clearly be unique to each conversation and could potentially be large files possibly even scattered over a number of exchanges and it is interesting that the capability of using the internet this way has been around for ages but only in the last few years has it been given any publicity which may be a valuable time delay for the agencies to get in place monitoring facilities for this traffic.

One final serious problem would be the matching of IP addresses (which are kinda the phone numbers used for all internet transactions) to actual people which presents many problems bearing in mind that normal dial up users are often given a separate randomly chosen IP address for every online session. There are two points I would make here.

First of all clearly Echelon has access to phone data as well as internet data so this combined with information in the IP address could tell them a lot...

...As mentioned above the main programme which coordinates the monitoring of telecommunications traffic for the big western powers is known as Echelon. It is well known that all international phone calls are routinely intercepted by that network using facilities like the NSA plant at Menwith Hill in England and also GCHQ in Cheltenham near London. The main route by which a lot of this traffic is intercepted is via satellites that are run for NSA by the huge Maryland agency known as the National Reconnaissance Office. All this is very well known but I don't think the full implications of the kind of technology they are using are properly appreciated by most people. Take for example the question of satellite monitoring of phone calls. I suspect a lot of people think then that that refers to satellite calls either made from satellite phones or international calls routed over satellites. They monitor those calls as well but the fact is that they monitor via satellite the ordinary landline calls of many countries. This is done because a lot of those calls in all countries travel across microwave relay links which are line of sight towers that the phone companies use to bounce calls around the country because of their convenience not requiring as they do any landline cables. What happens is that the signal that is directed by microwave at a receiving tower continues on after that into space and there the NSA can position a satellite and pick up the telephone conversations.(82) Eircom do use microwave relays to route internal landline voice calls in Ireland.(83) Furthermore all the Irish and international mobile phone companies use microwaves to bounce mobile calls between their masts. So depending on the architecture of the eircom network it is at least possible that Echelon monitors all Irish internal and international landline and most definitely mobile phone calls. The western agencies have also developed since the 70s the capacity to tap into underwater telephone cables.(84) ...

So incredible as it seems it is technologically, and for them morally, feasible that they keep copies of every single telephone conversation held over the last few years on the island of Ireland. Anybody who would hold data on that scale would clearly have enormous power to use that information to blackmail people and to anticipate the actions of political opposition groups etc. And be under no illusions people that is certainly what those organisations use that information for.(91) As the New Statesman reported in 1988 with respect to a US Congressional investigation into Echelon :

""Since then, investigators have subpoenaed other witnesses and asked them to provide the complete plans and manuals of the ECHELON system and related projects. The plans and blueprints are said to show that targeting of US political figures would not occur by accident, but was designed into the system from the start." (92)

The real power of it of course is that they can retrospectively trawl through a persons past life before he or she came to the attention of those agencies.

It is well known as well that the telephone conversations are put through automated speech to text recognition systems and this has been done at least since the early 80s. (93) Similarly voice recognition is used and it appears they had that technology since about 1979. This means they can track a particular person by flagging his unique voice pattern as he tries to speak on any phone on any platform that they are monitoring. This is from Margaret Newsham an NSA dissident living in Texas:

"As early as 1979 we could track a specific person and zoom in on his phone conversation while he was communicating."(94)
So all those movies that have the principals using call boxes to avoid detection are a bit mute when it comes to the technology available to the NSA and GCHQ.

Phoenix magazine when it described Echelon not long ago referred to a system called Enternet meaning the deployment of new technology that allows the agencies to interfere with the computers of people using the internet.(95) Presumably in cooperation with some large software companies they provide a kind of global hacking capability to the NSA and GCHQ et al :

"But ECHELON now has an "active" component which allows NSA or GCHQ analysts to covertly "hack" into information on the hard disks of computers linked into any telecommunications system, including the Internet."

Microsoft for example were discovered some time ago to have a close working relationship with NSA.(96) This came about because Microsoft felt it was illegal for them to export out of the US technology that could potentially be used as encryption that the US couldn't break. The question is how far does this legal pressure and the secret relationship it fostered go in terms of their products. Note as well the way in which Microsoft go to considerable lengths to hide from the user the extent to which their software caches key personal data.(97) This presumably is done under pressure from law enforcement bodies that are then supplied with all the information necessary to get access to the data later. Some of the main suppliers of anti-virus and internet security software also have remarkable holes in their security scans ostensibly because the software that they deliberately fail to detect is made by the same company as the anti-virus software. An employee of one of those companies claimed once that it was done under pressure from the US government but he quickly felt the need to retract that claim.(98)

It is even possible that the story of modern snail mail mimics that of email with a huge state apparatus of secret police using automated systems to hoover up any compromising information that they can glean from the post. Both the UK and the US have a tremendous legacy of secretly spying on any dissident activity of their citizens by reading their mail. In the UK this was revealed in the Spycatcher book where for the first time a shocked UK public found out that MI5 had offices in all the regional sorting centres where they monitored all the mail in a very widescale fashion.(99) The CIA have had the capacity for some time to read mail without opening it and have deployed this technology in the past on a large scale in the US. :(100)

"In the 1960's and early 1970's, large numbers of American dissidents, including those who challenged the condition of racial minorities and those who opposed the war in Vietnam, were specifically targeted for mail opening by both agencies [FBI and CIA]. In one program, selection of mail on the basis of "personal taste" by agents untrained in foreign intelligence objectives resulted in the interception and opening of the mail of Senators, Congressmen, journalists, businessmen, and even a Presidential candidate."

The above is from the final report of the Church committee of the US Senate April 23 1976. It refers specifically to widespread 'warrantless' mail opening.

"Despite the stated purpose of the programs, numerous domestic dissidents, including peace and civil rights activists, were specifically targeted for mail opening."(101)

In any case the point is that now the Royal Mail in the UK is using handwriting recognition software supplied by Lockheed Martin(102) a company described as the leading supplier of "monitoring equipment to the espionage agencies" in the US...

...Then they can use the historic information from the phone signal to see where they came from to the protests, listen to the historic cache of phone calls from that phone as I speculate and definitely they could monitor a cache of text messages to build up a profile of that person. Furthermore by looking at the pattern of how the phone signals group together before and after the protest you can clearly see who is normally hangs out with who etc. So with only one specific piece of surveillance data you can tell quite a lot quite quickly. The degree that this data is routinely used by even the smaller western intelligence agencies can be seen from the Times of 1997 which quotes this from Sonntags Zeitung of Zurich in the context of stating that Swiss police have been secretly tracking mobile phone users through the telephone companies:

"Swisscom [the state-owned telephone company] has stored data on the movements of more than a million mobile phone users and can call up the location of all its mobile subscribers down to a few hundred metres and going back at least half a year," the paper reports, adding:"When it has to, it can exactly reconstruct, down to the minute, who met whom, where and for how long for a confidential tte--tte."
(108) ...

From the BBC:

"But today's spies are also able to convert conventional phones into bugs without the owners' knowledge.
.....
Mobiles communicate with their base station on a frequency separate from the one used for talking. If you have details of the frequencies and encryption codes being used you can listen in to what is being said in the immediate vicinity of any phone in the network.
According to some reports, intelligence services do not even need to obtain permission from the networks to get their hands on the codes.
So provided it is switched on, a mobile sitting on the desk of a politician or businessman can act as a powerful, undetectable bug."(110) ,,,

Zurich's boss Josef Ackerman quits after CFO's suicide

The chairman of Zurich Insurance and former head of Deutsche Bank, Josef Ackermann, has resigned over the apparent suicide of the company's chief financial officer. The move brought more uncertainty to the Swiss insurer.

Announcing his resignation as chairman of Zurich Insurance on Thursday, Josef Ackermann said the family of the late CFO, Pierre Wauthier, who police believe committed suicide, indicated they thought he was partly to blame for the death.

"I have reasons to believe that the family is of the opinion that I should take my share of responsibility, as unfounded as any allegations might be," Ackermann said in statement.

"As a consequence, I see the possibility of a continued successful board leadership to the benefit of Zurich called into question," he added.

On Tuesday, CFO Pierre Wauthier was found dead at his home in a suburb of Zug outside Zurich, leaving behind a wife and two children.

It remained unclear in what way Ackermann could have contributed to the CFO's apparent suicide.

Since returning to his native Switzerland after his job as head of Deutsche Bank, Josef Ackermann had become a forceful advocate for the Swiss financial sector. He's been one of only few senior industry figures to keep their job through the global financial crisis.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office said it was conducting an autopsy, although it could be a month before the cause of death is determined...

Jack had been scheduled to present his research on heart devices at Black Hat on August 1. Last week, Jack told Reuters he had devised a way to hack into a wireless communications system that linked implanted pacemakers and defibrillators with bedside monitors that gather information about their operations....

“I’m sure there could be lethal consequences,” Jack said in a phone interview.

He declined to name the manufacturer of the device but said he was working with that company to figure out how to prevent malicious attacks on heart patients...

Jack’s sudden death drew responses from the hacking community reminiscent of those that followed the suicide of hacker activist Aaron Swartz in January....

Jack’s sister, Amberleigh Jack, who lives in New Zealand, told Reuters her brother was 35 years old. She declined to comment further, saying she needed time to grieve.

A former Deutsche Bank executive has been found dead at a house in London, it emerged today.
The body of William ‘Bill’ Broeksmit, 58, was discovered at his home in South Kensington on Sunday shortly after midday by police, who had been called to reports of a man found hanging at a house.
Mr Broeksmit - who retired last February - was a former senior manager with close ties to co-chief executive Anshu Jain. Metropolitan Police officers said his death was declared as non-suspicious.
Mr Jain and co-chief executive Juergen Fitschen said in an internal memo: ‘He was considered by many of his peers to be among the finest minds in the fields of risk and capital management.'

They added: ‘We are deeply saddened by Bill's death. He was a dear friend and colleague to many of us who benefitted from his intellect and wisdom.
‘Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family at this time. We will remember him for his contributions to Deutsche Bank, thoughtful advice and personal friendship.’
Mr Broeksmit worked in investment banking - specifically risk and securities - and lived on exclusive Evelyn Gardens in South Kensington, which has an average property value of £1.9million.

He worked at Deutsche Bank from 1996 to 2001, then from 2008 until he retired. Mr Broeksmit was also employed by Merrill Lynch for a period.
Scotland Yard confirmed only that a 58-year-old man was found hanged. A spokesman said: ‘Police were called at 12.35pm on Sunday to a man found hanging at Evelyn Gardens, SW7.
‘Kensington and Chelsea police, ambulance and air ambulance all attended. A 58-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. The death is being treated as non-suspicious.’

Libor Fixing Scandal: Deutsche Bank Clears Co-Chief Anshu Jain in Internal Probe

By Lianna Brinded | January 27, 2014 07:44 AM GMT

Deutsche Bank has cleared its co-chief executive Anshu Jain of any involvement in the manipulation of interbank lending rates, as part of an internal investigation being carried out by the bank.

According to a report by German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, citing unnamed supervisory board sources, Deutsche Bank has already raked through reams of documents and conducted hundreds of interviews with employees and has cleared Jain of any involvement.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the reports.

On 20 January, Deutsche Bank unveiled a plunge in profits after stumping up billions of euros in financial scandal fines and litigation fees.

The German lender posted a surprise pre-tax loss of €1.15bn (£948m, $1.6bn) for the fourth quarter after being hit by heavy litigation and restructuring fees as well as a number of fines stemming from lawsuits and other regulatory investigations.

"We expect 2014 to be a year of further challenges and disciplined implementation," said the group in a statement while also pledging to hit its 2015 targets.

The group was originally scheduled to report results on 29 January.

Deutsche Bank paid €528m in the fourth quarter for litigation costs. This brings its total bill for fines and settlements to €2.5bn.

Last month, eight banking giants were fined a combined total of €1.71bn by the European Commission for rigging the key benchmark interest rates Libor and Euribor.

Deutsche Bank, as well as Barclay, Société Générale, RBS, UBS, JPMorgan, Citigroup and RP Martin were part of two separate illegal cartels which conspired to manipulate Euribor and Libor to benefit their own positions in euro and Japanese yen-denominated interest rate derivatives markets.

Deutsche Bank's co-CEOs Juergen Fitschen and Jain are charged with the task to transform the group's reputation and culture.

Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank is also conducting another internal probe into whether traders have tried to rig key foreign exchange rates. The latest reports claim that the lender suspended one New York based trader who deals in Argentian pesos, after allegedly finding emails that indicated attempts to manipulate benchmark foreign exchange rates.

An employee who died after falling from the roof of JP Morgan's European headquarters in Canary Wharf, has been named as Gabriel Magee, vice president in CIB Technology.

Mr Magee had been with the company since 2004 and worked in technology. He was not a trader or a banker.

A JP Morgan spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened to have lost a member of the JP Morgan family at 25 Bank Street today. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and his friends.”

Emergency services were called to 25 Bank Street, close to Heron Quays DLR station, at around 8am this morning following reports of a man falling from the 500ft building and landing on a ninth floor roof.

Mr Magee, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. They confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance were called to the scene and an area around the building was cordoned off.

Workers in other buildings nearby tweeted their shock at the death with some commenting on the length of time it took for police to remove the body.

One wrote: "It's not a nice view from my building. The body is on the rooftop of level nine. So sad."

"The body is still lying there though. We are baffled as to why."

Another wrote: "A sorry view from my desk opposite. Still nobody approaching the body, very odd."

Andrew Lawrence wrote on Twitter: “Sad scene. Someone jumped/fell at JPMorgan Canary Wharf. A sorry view from my desk. Police everywhere, but nobody approaching the body, odd.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 8.04am to Bank Street to reports of a person fallen from a height.

"We sent one ambulance crew, a duty officer, our hazardous area response team and London Air Ambulance to the scene. Sadly, a man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene."

The building in London's financial district has been the headquarters of the bank's Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) operation since July 2012, according to the company's website.

German regulator vetoes key Deutsche Bank exec

By Edward Taylor

FRANKFURT/BERLIN Fri Mar 16, 2012 9:49am EDT

(Reuters) - German financial markets regulator BaFin fired a shot across Deutsche Bank AG's (DBKGn.DE) bow by refusing to approve William Broeksmit as chief risk officer in a broader management overhaul announced by Germany's flagship lender.

One source told Reuters BaFin felt Broeksmit did not have a sufficient leadership track record at Deutsche, which on Friday named three new members to its seven-member management board.

The Frankfurt-based bank failed to elevate Broeksmit, head of risk at the corporate and investment bank, and instead appointed Stuart Lewis to replace Hugo Baenziger as chief risk officer from June 1.

The decision to leave out Broeksmit is a blow to 49-year-old investment bank chief Anshu Jain, who is appointing new managers before he becomes co-chief executive in May alongside Juergen Fitschen, the 63-year old head of regional management.

Broeksmit joined Deutsche Bank in the 1990s as part of a core group of bankers who, like Jain, defected from Merrill Lynch. Between 1996 and 2001, Broeksmit established Deutsche's over-the-counter derivatives business in Europe.

Bafin declined to comment on whether it had ruled out Broeksmit as a candidate.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble however on Friday said financial regulator Bafin acted autonomously when it screened potential candidates for Deutsche Bank's management board.

Bafin -- which is under the authority of Germany's finance ministry -- needs to formally approve potential appointments to the management board of Germany's largest bank.

MANAGEMENT OVERHAUL

Stephan Leithner will become management board member in charge of personnel and head of Europe, and Henry Ritchotte will become chief operating officer, replacing current German board member Hermann-Josef Lamberti, Deutsche Bank said on Friday.

Jain's reshuffle will see investment bankers, known within the bank as "Anshu's Army", extend their influence over the expanded group executive committee.

Deutsche's group executive committee will be enlarged to 18 members from 12, elevating a group of company veterans.
The new way of thinking is precisely delineated by what it is not.
