You may not associate the Central Intelligence Agency with historical UFO investigations, but the agency did have a big role in such investigations many years ago. This week the agency posted an article called 'How to investigate a flying saucer." The release is part of a series of old documents dredged up as a nod to the return of The X-Files to TV this weekend.

Thanks for that Justdrew.

Dumb question, but are there any consistently good podcasts that deal with contact stories? I'm currently listening to a fictional serialized paranormal story, and while I appreciate the old radio show format, I have found myself craving something real.

I'm not talking about one that interviews ufologists - I'm only interested in hearing from contactees.

CIA releases secret files of 'flying saucer' UFO sightings - including over UK
Spy agency releases formerly classified photographs from the 1950s to celebrate the new series of cult sci-fi series The X Files
Caroline Mortimer @cjmortimer 3 hours
'Flying saucers' spotted over Sheffield in March 1952 CIA
The CIA has posted online previously secret photographs purportedly showing UFOs or ‘flying saucers’ hovering over Britain.

The hand selected images are among formerly classified files from the 1950s which were hidden away by the American spy agency.

First released in 1978, the images show how the CIA carried out extensive and secretive investigations into whether extraterrestrial life exists.

According to the documents released, one 1952 report entitled “Flying Saucers" said all but 100 UFO sightings had a reasonable explanation.

It said: “Less than 100 reasonably credible reports remain ‘unexplainable’ at this time. It is recommended that CIA surveillance be continued.

“It is strongly urged, however, that no reports of CIA interest or concern reach the press or public.”

And the 10 files - released to coincide with the revival of cult sci-fi series The X Files - do not contain any clues to any “alien abductions” or “crashed spaceships”.

A spokesman for the CIA said: “We’ve decided to highlight a few documents both sceptics and believers will find interesting.

“Below you will find five documents we think X-Files character Agent Fox Mulder would love to use to try and persuade others of the existence of extraterrestrial activity.

“We also pulled five documents we think his sceptical partner, Agent Dana Scully, could use to prove there is a scientific explanation for UFO sightings.”

A 1952 report which said most UFO sightings are 'phoney'
Some UFO conspiracy theorists do not believe the CIA’s decision is so innocent.

Stephen Bassett, the executive director of the Paradigm Research Group - which is campaigning to get the US government to "admit" aliens are real - believes the release is a face-saving exercise by the CIA to prepare the public for the existence of extraterrestrials.

He told the Mirror: "The recent postings to the CIA website could well be strategic on the part of the agency.

"It appears the CIA used the revival of the X-Files franchise as a convenient time to remind the public the agency has, in fact, engaged the extraterrestrial presence issue in the past.

"Post-disclosure the CIA will have substantial public relations issues as it has played a significant role in maintaining the truth embargo over six decades.

"These recent postings could have an inoculative effect in service to the agency's future PR strategy."
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Another year of crap-ufology rolled by...

One of the most frustrating developments was the Row Between Ted Roe, Erica Lukes, and Isaac Koi.

:wallhead: :mad2

Isaac has done more than just about anyone I know to make archival material of past UFOlogical significance freely available through scanning projects converting old paper newsletters and magazines (and books and conference proceedings) into PDFs available online.

I spotted a Chinese Lantern while driving last week during the "pink moon" last month and even though it was pretty elevated over the city at the time, I knew it wasn't normal. I noticed others, all following roughly the same straight path, and followed them to a source in a local park where there was a party going on, launching the lanterns. I was fairly pleased with my observational skills. That's where ufology's at in 2017 I guess.

Good on you LB.

Erica Lukes, Geoff Cox and others are doing a "Project Orange" effort about orbs ... but I'm not sure how they are going to rule out such lantern sightings.

Geoffrey Cox

Hi Keith/Pauline,
My name is Geoff Cox Assistant Director for Utah UFO Research Center (Utah UFORC). We have taken on a study of the purported phenomenon called Orbs or more specifically a certain type with the moniker Orange Orbs. The study is called Project Orange and is headed up by the Utah State Utah UFORC Director Erica Lukes. Erica is well known throughout the UAP arena and may be research through Facebook: UFO Classified or Utah UFO Research Center. Until now the investigation of these so called single anomalous balls of light with very particular characteristics and behaviors has been haphazard and unorganized and really just a catalog of reports dating back hundreds of years. Like almost all aspects of the UFO phenomenon we are hampered by the fact that no one has ever captured and studied an Orb. Thousands upon thousands of reports in the MUFON and NUFORC databases suggest there is something to it all but photographic and video evidence, while abundant, has been of inferior quality generally speaking.
My assignment within Project Orange is to gather all reliable accounts of Orange Orbs and map it worldwide...not an easy task! This would take years to do by myself. So to shot-gun the process I'm contacting 100's of i.e. investigators/researchers/scientist/astronomers/enthusiasts and collecting the data. This will be the first of it's kind and we will be sharing this for all that participate in our research.
If you have anything that you and associates can share please send my way to MUFONFI@comcast.net.
Thank you and easier findings to you,
Geoff

"A CASE OF PLAGIARISM BY GEOFFREY COX - So anyone in this group who knows me and has been following the goings-on is well aware that I wrote a Ufological Reform piece entitled: "A New Ufology: A Critical Examination of the Current State of Ufology and Ideas for Reform" last October (specifically for Robbie Graham's UFO Anthology book being released by White Crow Publishing in May) and that, subsequently, I published my piece online after it was cut from the final edit. In recent days, Geoffrey Cox, a Utah UFO researcher has taken my work and has put his name on it (and put it up for sale on Amazon) without my permission or with any contractual agreements concerning my intellectual property. He has stolen my work and is trying to represent it as his own while he makes money in the process. Legal action is now called for and I will pursue it. I wanted to share this with the community so that they knew what was going on and what type of person Geoffrey Cox is. Plagiarism is bad for this community and it must be called out...always." - Michael Huntington

Meanwhile ... coming out in late May 2017:

UFOs: Reframing the Debate
Image
IF YOU LIKE YOUR UFO LITERATURE TO CONFIRM WHAT YOU ALREADY ‘KNOW,’ THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!

UFOs: Reframing the Debate

The UFO field has produced thousands of dedicated researchers over the years, and reams of literature; but to what end? What can we claim to know conclusively today about the underlying nature of UFO phenomena that we didn’t know in the late-1940s? UFO study has always suffered from major organizational and methodological problems. It has also become dangerously self-referential.

If ever we are to further our understanding of the UFO enigma, we must fundamentally reframe our debate. We must wipe the board clean and fill it with new ideas, new theories, even new language. We must be willing to start from scratch when the field stagnates. We must be critical, sober, and free of dogma—ready to rinse away the residue of our own beliefs.

UFOs: Reframing the Debate is a collection of original essays exploring alternative perspectives on UFOs and how we might more usefully study the phenomenon in the 21st Century. The book brings together some of the most progressive and iconoclastic thinkers in the field for an incisive deconstruction of current popular ideas. Critical but constructive, this challenging volume represents a range of differing (even conflicting) alternative viewpoints on UFOs and related phenomena.

UFOs: Reframing the Debate is a cold, hard, slap in the face for ‘UFOlogy,’ a call to break away from established ideas, approaches, and practices, and to boldly tread a new path in quest of understanding what may very well be the greatest mystery of all.

Yer welcome Iam ... hoping folks like the new book. Should be out within the week or so. I don't expect it to have a quick or dramatic effect upon the field but am optimistic that it may hold up over the years and influence some folks thinking over time.

Will there be an audio book version? I recently searched Audible for UFOs for the 21st Century Mind and was astonished that there was no audio book. Audible does have a ton of John Keel material though, which is nice.

Thanks Elvis and Freitag.

I've not heard of any audio book plans for it yet ... always on my mind given my dayjob. :partydance:

RE: Audible audio books of John Keel material ... well, I'm glad so much is available but I have issues with the folks creating them (too much to go into here in public) and with audible's DRM policies in general.
