John Miller Moves To CBS News From Government Intelligence Agencies

John Miller has been named a Senior Correspondent for CBS News, it was announced today by Jeff Fager, Chairman, CBS News and Executive Producer, 60 MINUTES and David Rhodes, President, CBS News. Miller will have a major role in the mornings on CBS News. He will report for all CBS News platforms and broadcasts, including occasionally for 60 MINUTES.

“This is very exciting news for us. John is a man of many talents and one of them is that he is an extraordinary reporter,” said Fager. “It will be great to get him back on the air again, even better that he will be on CBS.”

“You can’t help but want to be around John Miller—and that makes him a natural broadcaster,” said Rhodes. “He will greatly enhance our already strong original reporting on issues of homeland security and law enforcement, here and around the globe.”

Since 2005, Miller has served in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, ending his tour as Deputy Director of the Analysis Division. John worked across the Intelligence Community with the CIA, NSA, FBI, and other agencies.

Before joining the FBI, he served from 2003 to 2005 as head of the Counterterrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau and the Major Crimes Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, overseeing both the LAPD’s Major Crimes Division, Hazardous Materials Unit and its Bomb Squad.

In 2002, Miller, along with co-authors Michael Stone and Chris Mitchell, wrote The Cell: Inside the 9/11 Plot, and Why the FBI and CIA Failed to Stop It, an investigation into the September 11 attacks, which drew on relationships developed with intelligence and law enforcement officers in the many years he spent as a journalist covering Al Qaeda as it grew into a global terrorist operation.

From 1995 to 2002, Miller was an ABC news correspondent. In 2002, he became co-anchor of the ABC news broadcast “20/20.” In 1998, he secured an on-camera interview with Osama bin Laden. His diligent investigative reporting over his career earned him nine Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award.

Miller served briefly as New York City Deputy Police Commissioner from 1994-1995, after working as a television journalist at various networks and television stations from 1973 to 1994.

"Spooks" from intelligence agencies never stop being spooks. They either keep their ties through contacts or are working under cover, against the mandate of intelligence agencies supposed 'rule' not to operate on National Soil. That rule was violated many years ago anyways.

In 2002, Miller married Emily Helen Altschul, daughter of banking mogul and Goldman Sachs Group partner Arthur Goodhart Altschul. Miller's brother-in-law, Arthur G. Altschul Jr., worked for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley before becoming chairman of Medicis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Miller began work as a journalist in 1973 for WNEW, a local New York City, television station. From 1985 to 1994, he worked as an investigative journalist for WNBC, another local New York television station.

From 1994 to 1995, he served as deputy police commissioner of New York City, where he was the chief spokesman for the NYPD, a move that some of his colleagues considered "going over to the dark side." He was hired at the request of then Commissioner William Bratton.

Miller then worked as an ABC News correspondent from 1995 until January 2002, when he took the post of co-anchor with Barbara Walters of the ABC News program, 20/20. During his tenure at ABC, Miller is also recongnized for covering the September 11, 2001 attacks, where he sat alongside Peter Jennings for the duration of the day listening in to radio conversations from the FBI, FDNY and NYPD, informing Jennings and viewers of their content.

In January 2003, he left ABC News to rejoin Bratton who by then was at the Los Angeles Police Department. Miller served as the police department's Bureau Chief for the Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau,[8] which included the Major Crimes Division, and the Emergency Services Division and the Special Investigations Section (SIS). While there, Miller launched the Archangel Critical Asset Assessment Management System (ACAMS) << now apparently called "Automated Critical...">>, which has been adopted by other cities and states for ongoing risk-assessment of potential terrorist targets. Miller was also one of the original designers of the Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC), which combines intelligence and analysis for the LAPD, LA Sheriff, and the FBI.

In September 2005, Miller became the Assistant Director for Public Affairs at the FBI in Washington, D.C.. In this position, he was tasked with overseeing the FBI's internal and external communications, including relations with the news media and handling of fugitive publicity, community relations, and other communications support. Miller also established an Employee Communications Unit to build stronger internal communications to the bureau's 31,000 employees. Among his collateral duties was to serve on the Strategic Execution Team (SET) to establish performance measurement standards for intelligence operations across the FBI's 56 field offices. The system, adapted from the CompStat process used by major police departments, is overseen by FBI Director Robert Mueller.

60 Minutes got a huge scoop this weekend (10/27/13)–the first-ever TV interview with Mike Morell, the man who just finished a long term as a high-ranking CIA official. But if you thought the CBS newsmagazine was going to pose some tough questions, think again.

From the introduction by CBS correspondent John Miller, viewers should have known this wasn't going to be a tough interview. Miller explained that Morell's tenure covered some key moments in US history, from the 9/11 attacks to the Obama era. And Morell wanted to talk–apparently about certain things more than others:

Mike Morell was deputy director of the CIA and gave us the only television interview he's ever done. He spoke to us, largely because he believes the very nature of the spy business keeps successes in the shadows, but often pushes failure into the bright lights.

Now, the reasons why Morell would want to do an interview shouldn't much matter–a journalist gets to raise questions regardless, especially ones about government "failures." But the CBS interview was more like a press briefing than an interview with a powerful figure who has never been asked questions by a TV journalist...

Why was the interview set up this CIA-friendly way? It might have something to do with the interviewer.

John Miller is a longtime reporter. But he has had other jobs, too; in 2003, he left journalism to work for the LAPD, and then took a job as the assistant director of public affairs at the FBI, a job that involved managing "relations with the news media."

So perhaps Morell went to Miller and 60 Minutes for his first-ever TV interview because he knew what he was going to get.

Sixty Minutes doesn't even try to hide their propagandistic proclivities anymore. They seem to be hell-bent on making Hugh Manatee Wins' world view of the media to be relatively understated.
