Anonymous denies Stratfor hack

Posted on December 26, 2011 - 10:44 by Trent Nouveau

Cyber activists associated with Anonymous have denied executing a hack and extract operation against Stratfor, a US-based security think tank.

The hackers - who may be linked to Sabu of LulzSec fame - managed to steal Stratfor's confidential client list and mined over 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

"The Stratfor hack is not the work of Anonymous. Stratfor is an open source intelligence agency, publishing daily reports on data collected from the open Internet. Hackers claiming to be Anonymous have distorted this truth in order to further their hidden agenda, and some Anons have taken the bait," the group claimed in an online communiqué.

"The leaked client list represents subscribers to a daily publication which is the primary service of Stratfor. Stratfor analysts are widely considered to be extremely unbiased. Anonymous does not attack media sources."

According to Anonymous, Stratfor has been deliberately misrepresented by "these so-called Anons" and portrayed in false light as a company which engages in activity similar to HBGary.

"Sabu and his crew are nothing more than opportunistic attention whores who are possibly agent provocateurs... As a media source, Stratfor's work is protected by the freedom of press, a principle which Anonymous values greatly. This hack is most definitely not the work of Anonymous," the group added.

So since it wasn't Anonymous (I believe them obviously), it was probably the usual Spook suspects.

'US, Israel inciting terrorism in Syria'
Mon Dec 26, 2011 7:21PM GMT
People gather around the entrance of one of the security sites attacked on December 23, 2011.
Syrian ambassador to Iran Hamed Hassan says the US and the Zionist regime are inciting terrorism in Syria due to the active role Damascus plays in the Resistance Movement.

“The developments that have occurred in Syria are different from those that have taken place in some Arab countries, whose people are against alliance with the US and the West and surrendering to the Zionists,” Hassan said on Monday.

He said Syria defended the Lebanese and Palestinians against the Israeli aggressions in 2006 and 2008 respectively, adding that Damascus was also behind the Iraqi nation in its resistance against US-led occupiers.

Meanwhile, two deadly attacks in Syria on Friday claimed the lives of 55 innocent people and injured more than 100 others.

Explosives on two booby-trapped cars were detonated within minutes of each other on Friday morning, one outside the main headquarters of the General Intelligence Agency and the other in the vicinity of a branch of the military intelligence.

The blasts happened as an Arab League delegation was visiting Damascus to help end months of violence in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad. Hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

In interviews with Israeli news outlets over the past few months, the Syrian opposition members have clearly expressed their vision for the future of Syria and their interest in establishing ties with the Tel Aviv regime.

However, Syrian people have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the government. Figures show that during the past weeks, about 12 million people have demonstrated in support of al-Assad.

Monitors find 'nothing frightening' in Syria's Homs

Last Updated: Wednesday, December 28, 2011, 18:13 79 0

Beirut: Arab League monitors aiming to verify whether Syria is ending a military crackdown on protesters said they saw "nothing frightening" in an initial visit to the protest hotbed of Homs although a long investigation would be needed.

Given the brief and limited nature of the monitors' tour on Tuesday, the comments by the chief monitor could heighten the concern of opposition activists that the observer mission could be used as a cloak of respectability by Damascus, issuing assessments whitewashing President Bashar al-Assad's record.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group, said security forces killed 15 people across the country Tuesday, six of them in Homs, coinciding with the monitors' visit. Activists said 34 had been killed Monday.

"Some places looked a bit of a mess but there was nothing frightening," Sudanese General Mustafa Dabi, the chief of the monitoring contingent, told a news agency by telephone from Damascus.

"The situation seemed reassuring so far," he said on Wednesday after his team's short visit to the city of one million people, Syria's third largest and epicenter of nine months of anti-Assad unrest.

"Yesterday was quiet and there were no clashes. We did not see tanks but we did see some armored vehicles. But remember this was only the first day and it will need investigation. We have 20 people who will be there for a long time."

Obama Secretly Preparing for Syria Intervention
Officials Seek Options to Aid Syrian Opposition
by Jason Ditz, December 28, 2011

Members of the Obama Administration are confirming tonight that the National Security Council has been instructed to begin seeking options for US intervention in Syria, including what they call the “unlikely” option of setting up a no-fly zone.

The process is being led by NSC Director Steve Simon, and is said to involve top members of the State, Defense and Treasury Departments. The focus is on ways to “aid” the Syrian opposition.

Unspoken in all of this, of course, is exactly which segments of the Syrian opposition the administration are looking to aid, though it seems likely that the administration will use the time-honored tactic of principally aiding groups in favor of a large, long-term US presence in the nation.

Among the options considered are providing “humanitarian aid” to rebel forces and establishing a “safe zone” inside Syrian territory (presumably through military means) near the Turkish border, something which has said to be on the table for Turkey as well. Officials say the talks are preliminary and no moves are expected soon, but that they are a “recognition” that the last round of sanctions against the regime did not work.

Syrian actress treads new stage in Syrian protests
— Syrian Alawite actress Fadwa Suleiman, one of the strong supporters of the uprising, says she was drawn to a life in drama because of its promise of freedom. She spoke to Reuters in an interview over Skype from an undisclosed location in Homs on December 14, 2011.

Thursday, 5 Jan 2012, Reuters wrote:Disillusioned at the level of state control even in theatre and film, Syrian actress Fadwa Suleiman joined protests last year against President Bashar al-Assad and now takes the stage at demonstrations in the city of Homs, centre of resistance to his family's four-decade rule.

Cutting her hair short like a boy and moving from house to house to evade capture, Suleiman has become one of the most recognised faces of the 10-month uprising against Assad.

She played no part in the early demonstrations that broke out in March, but a deep-seated rebellious streak - which only increased when she joined the state-run High Conservatory for Theatre Arts - drew her toward the protests.

"I chose to study theatre because I thought theater means freedom to think and to express oneself," Suleiman told Reuters in a Skype interview from Homs.

Describing her time at the conservatory, which like most culture in Syria is controlled by the state, she said she slowly discovered that "my country wants to drain every culture and content from its citizens."

"I became opposed to the way we work, to the humiliation, the degradation in human interaction. Everywhere you go, even a theater or a film company, you feel you have entered a security branch," she said.

"Authors write the worst scripts but they are chosen because they have links to security."

Before the uprising, Suleiman was known for her roles in television, radio, cinema and theater, playing an art teacher at an orphanage in "Small Hearts," a television series that helped raise awareness about human organ trafficking and was broadcast by several Arab channels.

She also acted in an Arabic adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" at the Qabbani theater in Damascus.

When the uprising broke out Suleiman, who is in her 30s, became increasingly active as Syria's intelligentsia mobilized in support of the pro-democracy protesters.

She has appeared at rallies demanding Assad's removal, sharing the podium with soccer star Abdelbasset Sarout, one of a number of Syrian celebrities who have backed the revolt.

Veteran actresses Mona Wassef and May Skaf, singer Asala Masri, film director Nabil Maleh and composer Malek Jandali are among other Syrian figures who have supported the uprising.

She has also delivered impassioned monologues to camera, calling for peaceful protests to continue across the country until Assad is overthrown. In one video message in November, she said security forces were searching Homs neighborhoods for her and beating people to force them to reveal her hiding place.

Her life on the run resembles that of other activists wanted for their role in the uprising, except that Suleiman is a woman from Syria's Alawite minority - the same sect as Assad - taking part in a mainly male and Sunni Muslim rebellion.

In the conservative bastion of Homs where Suleiman has made her stand, most women wear the headscarf and tensions between Sunnis and Alawites have exploded into sectarian violence.

Fearing a Sunni backlash, the Alawite community, a secretive and tightly knit sect which controls the army and makes up most of the security apparatus, has mostly sided with Assad, or remained silent as troops cracked down on protesters.

Many Alawites have disavowed Suleiman, including her brother Mahmoud, who appeared on a state-controlled satellite channel saying Syria's unity was more important than his sister.

The actress insists Sunnis and Alawites can still live together despite the spiral of sectarian violence in Homs, pointing to conservative Sunni families who have opened their homes to shelter her from security forces.

"The regime portrays Homs as a hub for extreme Islam, but I walk in Sunni neighborhoods distributing flyers, and go like this, without a veil, into the homes of religious families and discuss politics and organizing the next protest," she said.

A YouTube video showed Suleiman standing on a podium last month in the Sunni neighborhood of Khalidiya in Homs, chanting "One, one, one. Syrian people are one."

The crowd, waving Syrian green and white flags from the era before Assad's Baath Party took power in a 1963 military coup, thunders after her "Khalidiya: free and proud."

Opposite Khalidiya is the Alawite neighborhood of Nozha, where the bodies of 30 Sunni Muslims were dumped by army trucks in December, provoking an attack by armed Sunnis, according to an Alawite resident of the district.

At the rally, Suleiman appealed to the people of Nozha "to come and see reality, to see your brothers in blood peacefully demanding freedom."

"Freedom cannot be against your beliefs, even if you're pro-regime," she said.

In the interview, Suleiman said that stopping the sectarian bloodshed in Homs had become the main priority, but that Assad must also be removed.

"We're a civilised and peaceful nation. We cannot let the regime with a simple ploy make us slaughter each other to justify its existence," she said.

At a rally earlier in the uprising, the actress sang a popular tune by Lebanese singer Marcel Khalifah, surrounded by youths from her home region in the Alawite mountains overlooking the Mediterranean.

"I chose you, my homeland. Lovingly, voluntarily," she sang, in apparently wistful reference to her now estranged Alawite community. "Let the times disavow me, as long as you will remember me, my wonderful homeland."

Russia’s Aircraft Carrier Leads Naval Flotilla Docked in Syria

Source: AFP 08-01-2012 - 12:05 Last updated 08-01-2012 - 12:05

In solidarity with its Syrian ally, a large Russian naval flotilla led by an aircraft carrier has docked in the Syrian port of Tartus on Sunday at the time when Al-Midan attack’s martyrs were escorted to their final resting places.

The six-day port call by the carrier group in the Mediterranean port where Russia has a recently expanded naval base is intended to boost ties with Syria. “The port call is aimed at bringing the two countries closer together and strengthening their ties of friendship,” the official SANA news agency quoted a Russian naval officer Yakushin Vladimir Anatolievich as saying.

“The commanders of the Russian naval vessels docked in Tartus took turns to express their solidarity with the Syrian people,” the news agency added.

The governor of Tartus province, Atef al-Nadaf, paid tribute to the "honorable position adopted by Russia which has stood by the Syrian people."

The Al-Watan newspaper, reported last week that the carrier Admiral Kuznetsov was escorted by a large flotilla including submarines.

Despite strong Western criticism, Russia has stood by its Cold War ally in the face of a mounting international pressure against the Syrian government.

This came as masses of popular and official figures were laying the bodies of the martyrs who fell during the Friday’s terrorist attack in al-Midan neighborhood in Damascus to their final resting places. After holding prayers for the martyrs at al-Hasan Mosque, official ceremonies were held for the martyrs whose bodies were wrapped in Syrian flags and carried on shoulders among the chants of citizens condemning the inhumane attack, SANA reported.

Syria attacks:
‘If the regime wanted to prove Homs was safe, it failed …’
Wednesday 11 January 2012 16.44 EST, Ian Black in Homs, guardian.co.uk wrote:It was a trip Syria's ministry of information had gone to some lengths to arrange: taking foreign journalists to Homs, where government forces are fighting an opposition they call armed terrorists. But if the regime minders had been hoping to portray a city under government control yesterday, then they most certainly failed. The death of an acclaimed French television correspondent was a stark reminder of what are routine dangers for ordinary people in the war in Syria.

Syria’s Assad grants general amnesty ‘for uprising crimes’
15 January, 2012, 14:00, RT News wrote:President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree granting general amnesty for crimes committed during the Syrian uprising which started in March 2011, the official government news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

The amnesty reportedly covers those who took part in peaceful demonstrations, carried unlicensed weapons and those who have handed their weapons over to authorities before the end of January, as well as army deserters who fled their military service, but turn themselves in before January 31.

Meanwhile the Arab League said this week it would delay sending more monitors to Syria after the attack on an observer team. One of the league's numerous observers has already quit the mission, describing it as a "farce".

In an interview with Egyptian television, the Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi admitted the LAS mission in Syria is not working as planned and that he fears a civil war may break out there if the situation does not change drastically. He echoed Sheikh Hamad bin-Khalifa Al-Thani – Qatari leader and a key supporter of the league – who said Thursday that a positive outcome for the mission was unlikely.

The Emir of Qatar went as far as suggesting that Arab countries should send troops into Syria to stop government forces killing civilians. He made this statement Saturday during his interview with US news channel CBS which will be aired this Sunday in the news program 60 minutes. Speaking about the conflict in Syria Sheik Hamad said, "For such a situation to stop the killing, some troops should go to stop the killing."

This is the first time an Arab leader has publicly called for military intervention in Syria. Qatar was the first Arab country to join the NATO-led operation in Libya.

Russia Says NATO, Persian Gulf Nations Plan to Seek No-Fly Zone for Syria
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-12/russia-says-nato-persian-gulf-nations-plan-to-seek-no-fly-zone-for-syria.html
Russia received information that members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and some Persian Gulf countries are preparing military intervention in Syria, the head of the Russian Security Council said.

Turkey, a NATO member, may play a key role, Nikolai Patrushev, who used to head the country’s intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service, told Interfax in comments confirmed by his office. The U.S. and Turkey are working on a possible no-fly zone to protect Syrian rebels, Patrushev said.

“We are receiving information that NATO members and some Persian Gulf states, working under the ‘Libyan scenario’, intend to move from indirect intervention in Syria to direct military intervention,” the Russian security chief said.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday that the Arab League monitoring mission in Syria should end after failing to deter the government’s 10-month campaign of violence against dissidents. She spoke after meeting Qatari Foreign Minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al Thani, a day after President Barack Obama held talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal at the White House.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry and NATO’s press service in Brussels didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Russia, which has Soviet-era ties with Syria, argues that United Nations-sanctioned bombing of Libya by NATO to protect civilians was used to bring about regime change and that Western governments are trying to repeat that scenario in Syria.
Iranian Alliance

The West is putting pressure on Syria because the country refuses to break off its alliance with Iran and not for repressing the opposition, said Patrushev, who served with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the Soviet-era KGB.

“This time, it won’t be France, the U.K. and Italy that will provide the main strike forces, but perhaps neighboring Turkey, which was until recently on good terms with Syria and is a rival of Iran with immense ambitions,” Patrushev said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rejected calls for his resignation on Jan. 10, accusing “foreign conspiracies” of aiming to divide his country. Unrest in Syria since March 2011 has claimed more than 5,000 lives, according to the United Nations.

The Arab League imposed sanctions on Syria on Nov. 27. Russia and China have blocked efforts by the U.S. and the European Union for the UN Security Council to condemn the crackdown.

Russia, which has a naval base in Syria and sells weapons to the Middle Eastern country, is more concerned that Islamic radicals may come to power, said Irina Zvyagelskaya, a Middle East analyst at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
Russian Fear

“Our fear is that Syria could collapse and extremist Islamic forces will seize control that no one will be pleased about,” Zvyagelskaya said in a phone interview today. “This could destabilize the entire region.”

While Russia would block any effort to seek UN approval for a no-fly zone in Syria thanks to its veto-wielding power as a permanent member of the Security Council, Western nations and their allies may form a coalition like they did for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, said the analyst.

“There are scenarios which different countries are looking at,” Zvyagelskaya said. “We have seen before what a no-fly zone means, it will be used to overthrow the regime.”
No-Fly Zone

Defectors from Assad’s army who have set up an opposition force called the Free Syrian Army called at the end of last year for a no-fly zone and two buffer areas with international backing as they seek to topple the Syrian government.

The group wants a buffer zone in the north, on the Turkish- Syrian border, and another in the south near the border with Jordan to help them bring the fight closer to Assad, Riad al As’ad, a former Syrian colonel who leads the Free Syrian Army, said in a phone interview from Turkey on Nov. 18.
“After the Libyan experience, Russia will do everything to stop this scenario from happening,” he said in a phone interview. “Syria is much more important than Libya from Russia’s point of view.”

West Wants Removal of No-Use-of-Force Statement from Syrian Resolution

MOSCOW, January 18 (RIA Novosti)

Western countries are insisting on removing the no-use of force statement from the UN resolution on Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday. “They strongly insist on removing a phrase from the resolution that nothing can justify the use of force,” Lavrov said, adding “the approach of our western colleagues is one-sided.”

The minister said that if one of the countries decided to attack Syria, Russia would not be able to prevent it.

The attack on Syria will not be approved by the UN which leaves the attackers fully responsible for their deeds, Lavrov said.
Russia, among the United States, Great Britain, China and France has the right to veto any UN decision.

Lavrov also said that China supported the Russian position that any UN-backed decision on Syria cannot include statements allowing the use of force towards Syrian authorities.

On Tuesday, Russia circulated a draft of the United Nations Security Council’s resolution on Syria, its third since December, but Western diplomats remained unimpressed, dismissing it as “small tweaks” and “playing for time.”

The revised draft incorporated some proposals proposed by Western countries but still avoids promoting any direct pressure on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom the United States and the European Union accuse of waging a bloody war on political dissent.

The document includes France’s call on the Syrian government to “cease all violence [and] release all those arrested due to the recent incidents” and also a joint proposal by France and Portugal calling on Syria to let international media and humanitarian organizations into the country.

But it also reiterates “the need to resolve the current crisis in Syria peacefully, ruling out any military intervention from outside,” a point that Russia has long been insisting on.
