What could possibly go wrong? Does no one remember Skynet or Robocop for that matter?

Drones to patrol skies over Republican convention

TAMPA --

Security-conscious authorities will be using a wide variety of devices and technology to monitor the skies, streets and waterways around Tampa during next week's Republican National Convention. Cameras, helicopters and law enforcement officers all will be employed to help look for suspicious activity and possible threats.

Add to that mix one more technology: drones.

This will mark the first time unmanned aerial vehicles will patrol the skies over a national convention, according to an engineer with a Naples company that builds and will operate the drones.

The vehicle, called an Aether Aero, is an eight-bladed vertical takeoff platform that will provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to government agencies, according to Curt Winter, an engineer with United Drones.

The 41/2-foot-wide Aether Aero, which resembles a small helicopter, can fly up to 4,000 feet high and, with a specially built battery, can operate up to four hours at a time, Winter said. It is equipped with a 109x optical zoom camera, can lift up to 50 pounds and is so light it can be picked up with two fingers, according to Chris Knott, United Drones' director of corporate development.

In addition to the unmanned aerial vehicles, United Drones will operate several unmanned ground vehicles, called Wraiths, at the convention. The Wraiths can travel up to 65 mph "and climb just about anything," said Winter. The Wraiths, also built by United Drones, have the capability of carrying surveillance cameras and even lethal and non-lethal weapons.

Those will last about 30s in a hurricane but if they're put away in time they can be used for S&R afterwards, maybe.

(Is tampa still scheduled for a hurricane?)

Yes, crikkett, and the convention is currently scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Thanks, Blue, but apparently drones won’t patrol,
after all. One cannot know for sure, though.

Drones won’t patrol Tampa during RNC, federal authorities say

By Jamal Thalji, Tampa Bay Times Staff Writer
In Print: Saturday, August 25, 2012

TAMPA — Federal officials say unmanned drones will not be patrolling downtown’s skies and streets during next week’s Republican National Convention.

A Naples company planned to outfit small unmanned helicopters and ground vehicles with cameras and operate them on behalf of unnamed government agencies during the convention, according to a report that ran in the Tampa Tribune on Friday and on its website, TBO.com.

The part of the story about aerial drones patrolling the RNC is “completely inaccurate,” Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said.

George Ogilvie, spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, which is overseeing security, released this statement: “The Secret Service is not aware of any drones being used for the security planning of the national special security event.”

United Drones president Curtis Winter, an engineer quoted in the Tribune article, said the company is developing unmanned aerial and ground drones for law enforcement but that the devices are not part of the security measures during the RNC.

“Our problem is everything we said was misconstrued,” he said. “We talked about our capabilities, not what we’re doing there.”

Tribune executive editor Richard “Duke” Maas released this statement Friday:

“Federal and local officials responsible for RNC security have responded to our front-page story today, saying they have no plans to make use of drones over the skies of Tampa during the convention.

“This is in direct conflict with what Curt Winter, an employee of United Drones, told Tribune reporter Howard Altman on Thursday for his story. Then this morning, Mr. Winter called Mr. Altman back to say he misspoke regarding a statement he made yesterday about receiving a waiver from the FAA to operate the drones.

“Mr. Winter did not, however, back off from other statements he made on Thursday regarding the company’s role in operating drones during the convention. We are continuing to report out the story.”

Winter told the Tampa Bay Times on Friday that his company was planning to demonstrate its ground vehicles during the convention. But he said United Drones will not fly any drones during the RNC and did not ask the FAA for permission to fly them.

In response to Winter’s statements to the Times, Maas wrote in an email: “Mr. Winter’s comments to you are in direct conflict to those contained in Mr. Altman’s typed notes from their conversation. I have reviewed those notes, and I am confident that our reporter did not misconstrue Mr. Winter’s comments.”

While military drones have become commonplace on the battlefield, they are restricted for civilian use. But even then the FAA doesn’t generally allow “unmanned aircraft systems” — the FAA’s preferred term for drones — in urban airspace, Brown said. Airspace around the Tampa Bay Times Forum will also be restricted during the RNC.

Times researcher John Martin contributed to this report.

If I was of a conspiracy mind, I might think that this is a smokescreen for what TPB might now about the Hurricaine heading towards them right now, which some folks are calling ver "Katrina Like".

Update from TBO

Postby Blue » Sun Aug 26, 2012 4:19 pm

(Thanks for the update Allegro.)

Lot of strange comments or it could just be United Drones being publicity whores.

TAMPA --

Military and law enforcement officials, responding to a story in Friday's Tampa Tribune, said they have no plans to use unmanned aerial or ground vehicles during the Republican National Convention.

"None of the 60 local, state or federal agencies involved in the security operation of the Republican National Convention will utilize air or ground drones," said Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy. "They were never part of the planning process and they will not be utilized during the event, anywhere."

"The Secret Service is not aware of any drones being used in the implementation of the security plan for the national special security event,'' said spokesman George Ogilvie.

The denials came after the Tribune published a story quoting officials with a Naples-based drone company, United Drones, saying they would be operating unmanned vehicles in the air and on the ground at the convention.

Curt Winter, an engineer with United Drones, had said the company was bringing drones to Tampa and would operate them during the convention. He said United Drones had obtained an FAA waiver to fly the vehicles during the convention and had a contract with a government agency whose name he would not disclose.

Friday morning, Winter said he "misspoke" about obtaining an FAA waiver for the convention, but the company was waiting for Federal Aviation Administration authorization to fly its Aether Aero, an eight-bladed "vertical take-off aerial platform" that can fly up to 4,000 feet high.

The FAA said Friday said no one has requested a waiver to fly drones during the event. Military officials also said they have no plans to use drones.

Chris Knott, director of corporate development for United Drones, said Friday the company has an agreement with a "private entity'' for use of its drones during the convention. He would not disclose what entity or when or if the drones would operate. By afternoon, the company quit responding to phone calls or emailed questions.

"I am telling you, we will be present" during the convention," he said. "I am not going to talk to you about the level of operational commitment."
