Not exactly the kind of thread I was expecting to start on the Quebec election. More details tomorrow, but in brief: during her victory speech, flashbang goes off behind the curtain, two wounded by bullets outside the hall, one man arrested with a revolved and a rifle, and the hall is on fire.
The arrested suspect seems to be some sort of anglo extremist talking about payback and the anglos waking up. As for the RI angle, I very much doubt that one person did all that, especially that some of the action was going on inside the hall while there was clearly stuff happening outside.
To her credit, the premier elect (Pauline Marois) came back on stage and finished her speech once things were 'under control'. Except for the fire raging at the back. Quite an evening. This sort of stuff has not happened here since October 70.

The CBC website is still reporting it as merely an "apparent" shot from "a starter pistol." Television reports a rifle and handgun, a fire, two in critical condition and cries of "the Anglos are rising!"
What a crazy, sad state we've fallen into.

Christ.
Reporting the shooter was wearing a blue bathrobe. How does someone dressed in a blue bathrobe gain entrance?

No identification of the shooter yet? I've seen only that he's "not from Montreal."
There appears some confusion over what, if anything, he said. "The Anglos are waking up!" was the first report I heard. Then, that he'd been shouting in French. Then, that he'd said nothing.

He said 'C'est le temps du payback', then he said 'Les anglais se réveillent' twice, then he said, 'C'est assez'. Then he was stuffed into the police cruiser. He owns a pourvoirie (hunting logdge) near Tremblant north of Montreal. Richard Henry Bain, 52 years old.

Zero: Total number of stories in New York Times on Quebec elections or assassination attempt on winning candidate.
It's not like New York borders on Quebec or anything, right?

Indeed. I'd think nothing less than ermine would do.
Howzabout someone explains the Quebec election now? What does it mean in the context of the student uprising and the "martial law" law?

An ex-leader of one of the student groups defeated a Minister in Montreal. Marois intends to cancel the tuition hikes and repeal Bill 78.
Charest was personally defeated in his own riding and has resigned as leader, but the Liberals weren't embarrassed as many expected. The PQ have a very weak mandate in a minority legislature, only four more seats than the Liberals, and the third party is further right than the Liberals. So their ability to enact their platform is very much in doubt.

Well, good for Marois. Long live Marois.
I hate to do this, and trust me I never will again, but the Bain's are getting out of control.

That hadn't occurred to me.
And this isn't Photoshopped, and that's not a cardboard cutout. Bain won an auction to meet Celine Dion in Las Vegas last January.

He never showed signs of frustration about having to do business in French in the mainly francophone community.
“He spoke well in French. It was broken French, but good enough. He never spoke to us in English. Always in French, and he never gave any indications of a frustration related to language.”
Bain was also active and well-known in the community, said André Ste-Marie, president of Fondation Tremblant, an organization that raises money for poor children in the community.
