Alien planet at Alpha Centauri closest ever found to Earth
'Extraordinary discovery' has roughly our mass and may harbor other alien worlds as well

By Mike Wall
updated 1 hour 14 minutes ago

The star system closest to our own sun hosts a planet with roughly Earth's mass and may harbor other alien worlds as well, a new study reports.

Astronomers detected the alien planet around the sunlike star Alpha Centauri B, which is part of a three-star system just 4.3 light-years away from us. The newfound world is about as massive as Earth, but it's no Earth twin; its heat-blasted surface may be covered with molten rock, researchers said.

The mere existence of the planet, known as Alpha Centauri Bb, suggests that undiscovered worlds may lurk farther away from its star — perhaps in the habitable zone, that just-right range of distances where liquid water can exist.

"Most of the low-mass planets are in systems of two, three to six or seven planets, out to the habitable zone," study co-author Stephane Udry of the Geneva Observatory told reporters Tuesday.

So the discovery "opens really good prospects for detecting planets in the habitable zone in a system that is very close to us," Udry added. "In that sense, this system is a landmark."

No doubt this is a naive question, but why has it taken them so long to discover it? As a non-astronomer, I would have thought Alpha Centauri would be the first place they'd look. I mean, it's not called "Alpha" for nothing.

In July 2012, the BBC reported:

Since it was launched in March 2009, Nasa's Kepler Space Telescope has detected more than 2,300 candidate exoplanets.

...all of them much further away.

Whatever! This is exciting news. It begins to look as though planets are at least as common as stars.

In "The Life of the Cosmos", Lee Smolin offers a theory of the universe that is radically different from anything proposed before. He argues that 'The underlying structure of our world is to be found in the logic of evolution'. He departs from contemporary physicists to explore the idea that the laws of nature we observe may be the partial result of a process of natural selection that occurred before the Big Bang.

Lee Smolin is Professor of Physics at the Center for Gravitational Physics and Geometry at Pennsylvania State University.

This is absolutely fascinating news! Just now caught it with this thread.
I think Mac is right about planets probably being at least as numerous as stars and perhaps much moreso!
Go Alpha Centauri :thumbsup

I'm guessing this was only recently discovered because (1) the orbital plane of the planet was such that it never eclipsed or occluded the star, (2) the mass of the planet is low enough relative to the star that perturbations were tiny, or (3) interactions with alpha Centauri A created a complex interaction that hid the planet's existence for a while.

Or, it's Melancholia!
The real issue is that there is extremely low likelihood that the speculations of the untrained, on a topic almost pathologically riddled by dynamic considerations and feedback effects, will offer anything new.

Alpha Centauri, naturally, recurs frequently in the contact literature.

April 1, 1959 - Horst Raps returned to the previously appointed site in Lampertheim, Germany where he had encountered a UFOnaut on March 29th and found the hovering blue-violet disc-shaped craft and the tall humanoid waiting for him. This time he was invited onboard the UFO, and supposedly taken on an otherworldly ride to another planet in the Alpha Centauri system. There he encountered various races of people, who allegedly lived in dwellings shaped like cupolas and cultivated multicolored flowers. (Source: Albert S. Rosales, Humanoid Contact Database 1959, case # 2440, citing Ulrich Magin).

UC Santa Cruz researcher Javier Guedes was presciently on the money back in 2008:

Alpha Centauri is the closest star system to our own but with a bonus: there are three stars rather than one. It’s also one of the best chances we know in the local area to have a planet similar to Earth capable of developing life like ours.

If any planet were to harbour earth-like life in the three-star system, it would likely be around Alpha Centauri A, which is most similar to the sun. However astronomer Javier Guedes and his coauthors believe that Alpha Centauri B is likely to have terrestrial planets in its habitable region. Based on computer simulations of planet formation, Guedes and his team found that no matter what starting conditions, a terrestrial planet always formed around the star. By studying the ‘wobbles’ the planet causes on its parent star, the team reckon they could find any potential planets within a few years.

A man named Mendoza had just finished showing a film in an outdoor setting and was busy rewinding the movie and cleaning the filters on the old projector, while busy at his job he noticed that a bright light had descended over him, and hovered silently overhead. Suddenly he heard a strong telepathic command instructing him to start writing; surprised he looked up and saw a huge luminous sphere suspended silently in midair. He felt no fear and stared at the luminous sphere. Suddenly he heard the voice again in his mind instructing him once again to write something, what he did not know. He could not find any pencil or paper so he used some carbon paper from the projector and some white chalk. Soon a powerful voice claiming to be “Messenger Herion” a visitor from the 4th planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. The message Mendoza wrote was mainly of a religious nature, which pointed out the virtues of the earth and its human habitants. It mentioned a universal “Absolute Truth” which one-day would be known. The message was signed again by “Herion” and gave the year of 10860 from the sinking of the Islands of Atlantis. The sphere of light then flew silently away.

Are we to presume that these contactees, whether they are sincere or not, believe that if extraterrestrials are able to communicate telepathically or even verbally in the witness's native tongue, that they also understand and will use our celestial place-names (even if many of these pedestrians, non-astronomers, and peasants had no idea what Alpha Centauri is)? Only very few of these cases in which origins are discussed is a complex response given, not using terrestrial-based language.

Location. Near Winchester Virginia
Date: August 28 1979
Time: 2300
The witness, a truck driver was going southbound on route 17 when he noticed a bright light approaching his truck from behind. He felt himself and the truck being levitated into the object. Inside the object he met several man-like occupants wearing surgeon type clothing, these men were totally normal except that they had numbers printed across their foreheads as if for identification purposes. The witness was taken to a city that he was told was beyond "Alpha Centauri." He said they had stopped briefly on the moon. The aliens told the witness that they were here to prevent a nuclear holocaust on earth, but that time was short.

The witness was exploring a remote area of the Amazon jungle when after getting up one morning he observed a silent disc shaped object pass overhead and descend out of sight behind some trees. The witness prepared a backpack, grabbed his machete, and walked towards the direction where the object had descended. He eventually came upon a large disc shaped craft that hovered over some nearby bushes. As he stood watching he felt somebody touch his arm, as he turned around two tall blond men wearing silvery one-piece coveralls confronted him. The men had several strange instruments hanging from pockets on the coveralls. They spoke to the witness in a soft melodic unknown language. While they spoke, one of the men took out a small apparatus from his pocket and seemed to adjust it. Suddenly their language became clear and understood by the witness, who spoke German. They spoke to the witness, telling him that they originated from the star cluster known as Proxima Centauri.

It's definitely rare in the mythology to have a claim that one's vehicle was levitated into a UFO, and quite notable that two related to Alpha Centauri, one from Virginia in 1979 and the other from Brazil in 1990 describe the exact same scenario.

Either the man from Minas Gerais had read the Winchester account at some point in his life and recalled those two details, or the compiler of these reports has a nefarious motive. A third option is that they are true.

How could I forget Elizabeth Klarer? Here's her friendly wikipedia entry:

Elizabeth Klarer (1910 - February, 1994) was a South African who claimed to have been contacted by extraterrestials between 1954 and 1963.[1] She was one of the first women to claim a sexual relationship with an extraterrestrial.[2]

Biography
She was born in Mooi River, Natal.[3] She studied meteorology and music in England, and learned to fly light aircraft. After reading George Adamski's Flying Saucers Have Landed (1953) and Inside the Space Ships (1955), Klarer recalled that she had been receiving occasional telepathic messages from a friendly space alien named Akon since childhood. Akon was presumably unrelated to Adamski's Venusian space friend Orthon. She was able to take photos of the ship from the Drakensberg Mountains on July 17, 1955.[4] This was a similar arrangement to that made by Adamski with Orthon in 1952.

Klarer managed to call down Akon and his scout ship on April 7, 1956, for an actual landing.[3] She was carried up to the mother ship in earth orbit, and --- now the story becomes somewhat different from the mid-1950s contactee standard --- was eventually transported in 1957 to Akon's home planet, Meton, orbiting in the nearby multiple-star system Alpha Centauri, where she and Akon had sex, she became pregnant, and eventually delivered a male child.[2] Her son, Ayling, stayed behind on Meton to be educated, while Klarer came home. The whole process, trip, lovemaking, pregnancy, delivery and return trip, supposedly required less than four months. Klarer took far more time before publishing a book, Beyond the Light Barrier (1980),[5] about her extraterrestrial adventures. On his world lecture tour in the late 1950s, George Adamski made a point of visiting South Africa and looking up Klarer for a chat on their variety of experiences with the friendly, wise "Space Brothers." By that time, Klarer was not the only Adamski follower to experience claimed space-motherhood, because in 1957 British housewife Cynthia Appleton[Inaccessible without a password] was revealing that one of Adamski's handsome blond Venusian Space Brothers had seduced her and gotten her pregnant. The resulting son, Matthew, has not been available for comment to date. Elizabeth Klarer died in 1994 in South Africa.[2]

A book for contactee connoisseurs
Yesterday, browsing in a local charity shop, I came across an interesting book about UFO contactees and abductees (Janet and Colin Bord, Life Beyond Planet Earth? Man's contacts with space people, Grafton Books, London, 1991).

As the title suggests, the book is almost entirely devoted to discussing the UFO contactees and their fantastic and absurd (if interpreted literally) stories. These include such old favourites as Adamski, Fry and Bethurum, and England's Arthur Shuttlewood, whose visitors from Aenstria liked to chat with him by calling him from a local telephone box.

Some of them are more obscure, and there is one in particular that I have never heard of before. I reproduce the relevant paragraphs here because I am sure that most of my readers will appreciate its delightfully ridiculous details. In the book it follows on from the better-known tale of the South African contactee Elizabeth Klarer, who claimed to have given birth to a son sired by a man called Akon, from Meton, a planet in the Alpha Centauri system.

An even earlier contact with the Alpha Centauri system was made by a Frenchman identified only as Monsieur Y. Some time during the war, in the early 1940s, he had been contacted by space people who had taken him in a spaceship to their planet Bâavi in the Alpha Centauri system. The journey lasted only one and a half hours, the distance of more than 4 light-years being covered so quickly because the spaceship, which he called a vaïd, attained more than 'gravific speed'. This caused them to enter anti-time, changing course three times on the way to Alpha Centauri. On the planet Bâavi Monsieur Y found that men and women had complete equality and lived in a large metropolis, the rest of the planet being left to the natural wildlife. In their early years the young people had children and were then sterilized, living for several hundred years without apparent ageing. They had no marriage or permanent partners but loved everyone equally and practised a form of free physical love among themselves. They foresaw that a great cataclysm would hit the Earth in a relatively short time and so they planned to save some humans to repopulate the planet afterwards.

Perhaps this is what Akon and his friends from Meton were engaged in when he met Elizabeth Klarer. Monsieur Y also returned with much documentation which included a grammar of the Bâavi language, descriptions of intergalactic spacecraft and their construction, a philosophy of time, and the fundamentals of Bâavian science written in Armenian: these last were discovered by Monsieur Y in Southern Algeria buried in a cave and revealed to him by an old desert nomad. Why an archaic Armenian text should be buried in Algeria and contain information on the planet Bâavi, not even Monsieur Y knew.

The Bords obtained this story from pages 277-86 of a book titled The Mysteries of the Skies, but, oddly, they didn't know the names of the author or publisher. It is certainly not the book Mysteries of the Skies, by Lore and Deneault, as this has a strictly nuts-and-bolts approach to the subject.
