The Ford Follies part….

April 4, 2014

Oh, who’s even counting anymore?

But, here’s the skinny. During a council meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Ford was the sole person to vote against naming a street after Nelson Mandela. Governments like stuff like this. It looks nice, but it doesn’t really cost anything. (In New York, there’s a bench in a park named after Dr. Feelgood singer Lee Brilleaux, but that might be the result of a donation) In addition, Mandela is still wildly popular. Safer too now that he’s dead, so it seemed like a no-brainer.

Well, Ford, who has made a career of being the contrarian, voted no. And curiously also against sending a greeting to Canada’s Olympic athletes. Several theories have been put forward: Ford wasn’t paying attention; Ford simply votes to piss people off; Ford really believed he was right, but later buckled.

Thirty minutes after the vote became public, Ford claimed he had made a mistake and wanted to change his vote. In the press scrum, he claimed it was immediately, but when corrected stormed off in a huff.

Leave it to brother Doug Ford to make the case: He argued, “No one in this city supports the black community more than Rob Ford. No one. Bottom line. Zing. Done. And no one supports the Olympic athletes more than Rob Ford.” Well, I know he’s a supporter of some young black entrepreneurs (I believe there’s a video to mark the occasion), but that might be a matter for the courtsm, so I’ll say no further.

In the end, Toronto City Council after initially denying the opportunity, gave Ford the chance to change his vote. Rob, Rob, have the courage of your convictions. Just like Rob Anders who famously voted not to give Mandela honourary Canadian citizenship because he was a “communist” and a “terrorist.” Years later Anders was unrepentant. And still regarded as a dick, but you can’t have everything.

The sad thing is that Ford’s antics will actually convince people that it will make a difference if they choose a different Mayor. True, the next one won’t be such a comic buffoon-de-force, but the business of the city will largely remain the same.

Doug Ford looks like some pharma bro researchers tried to cross-breed a big old pink piggy with a Great White shark, then lost control of their project.

He reminds me of a coke-glutted New Jerseyite who spent far too long shopping at the mall.

Right Wing Austerity Comes to Ontario

Image
Homelessness in Toronto
The poor will suffer even more under Ford

Ford Agenda
Since taking office at the end of June, it is clear that Ford will move quickly and ruthlessly with an agenda of hard right austerity and social backwardness. A freeze on hiring in the public sector has been announced. A planned increase in the minimum wage will be cancelled. They have taken on a high priced official to ‘go over the books’ and look for ‘efficiencies.’ Their new adviser on healthcare has a brutal track record in closing and privatizing hospitals. They have removed themselves from climate change initiatives that will mean billions of dollars in revenues from the Federal Government will be lost. Already we know that this will mean the cancellation of desperately needed repairs to schools and public housing. Timid measures of civilian police oversight have been cancelled. Ford has announced that Ontario will remove itself from agreements around locating and sheltering refugees, with vile racist language on ‘illegal border crossers.’ Seeking to ensure opposition to their agenda is prevented, the Tories have announced that the City Council in Toronto (the capital of Ontario and by far the largest city in Canada), will be reduced in size by almost half.

This last week, the new Minister of Community and Social Services announced that some improvements in the rules for the sub poverty social assistance system in Ontario that the Liberals had planned would be ‘put on hold.’ A 3% increase in social assistance rates was also cut in half with the result that the first yearly increase above the rate of inflation since 1994 will not happen. The Tories also made the decision to reverse their campaign promise to maintain the basic income pilot project the Liberals had recently set in motion. The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) that I am part of, has taken a strongly critical position on basic income and disagreed with those on the left who see it as a progressive policy alternative. That being said, however, there is nothing to celebrate in the Tory decision to kill the pilot. The four thousand people who had been selected to be part of the test for the next three years were receiving income significantly above the level of social assistance and had planned their lives accordingly. They are now being cynically and disgustingly abandoned. Far more dreadful, though, is the obvious reasoning at work here. The Tories have no patience with an experiment with reduced conditionality. They want to double down on a traditional poor law based persecution of people on social benefits. Over the next hundred days, they intend to craft a package of right wing ‘welfare reform’ that, the Minister hints, will include a crackdown on ‘benefit fraud’ and a drive to force people into the most exploitative jobs on offer from which disabled people will not be exempt. It is a classic war on the poor by making the system of income support as inadequate, punitive and precarious as possible so as the create climate of desperation that forces people to compete for low wage precarious employment.

Neoliberal jerks:

https://fischerzed.wordpress.com/2018/0 ... like-that/

Business Economics 101 (Or something like that)
August 6, 2018 at 1:23 pm

There’s an old joke that goes something like this: At the first meeting after the Cuban Revolution , Castro is doling out jobs. “Is anyone here an economist?” he asks.

Che puts up his hand. “Right. You’re the minster for the economy.” Che looks a bit shocked, but says nothing.

After the meeting Che approaches Fidel ans says, “I’m happy to rake care of the economy, but you know, I’m not an economist.”

Fidel snaps back, “Why did you put up your hand when I asked if anyone was an economist.”

“Oh,” Che replies, “I thought you said was anyone a communist.”

Huh.

Now, it turned out Che was neither an economist nor a communist, (sorry, left-communist snark here), and while the new Progressive Conservative government of Doug Ford certainly never claim to be communists, its grasp on basic economic principles doesn’t appear too solid either.

The cancellation of the Liberal government cap-and-trade pollution policy was an ideological one, but part of the money was earmarked for school repairs – The Toronto District School Board was scheduled to receive $100 million for repairs to plant and infrastructure, and as a parent who still has one kid in the school system, I’m OK with money being spent on schools. Where does that money go now? Presumably it says with polluters.

A few years ago when Ford’s brother Rob was the Mayor of Toronto, the Fords railed against a 5 cent charge for plastic bags in grocery stores. which the previous Mayor David Miller had instituted in order to reduce plastic bag use Outrageous they said. No longer would Toronto collect that money. Funny thing is, most of the stores I shop at still charge me for a plastic bag. .

Last week, the government announced it was cancelling the province’s basic income pilot program. This caused much consternation, since the Conservatives had maintained prior to the election they would be continuing with the program. Minister Lisa MacLeod more or less fessed up to the broken promise, but fell back on the time honoured tradition of claiming the previous government had left them with less money than they had assumed, only to claim the next day that the media’s reporting was….wait for it…fake news.

But it’s not all bad news. One of the other campaign promises was the return of the buck-a-beer. Currently in Ontario the minimum price a brewer can sell a bottle or can of beer for is $1.25. Prior to 2008, the minimum was $1. Ford’s idea is to reduce the floor, so while your kids’ school may have holes in its roof, the air is too polluted to go outside, and you may have been pushed deeper into poverty, at least you can save some money on beer. Maybe…because there’s no guarantee that brewers will actually sell at the minimum price (a quick survey of LCBO and Beer Store prices indicate no one’s selling anywhere close to that minimum now).

I’m not an economist either. I took a few classes in school, and read a few books since then, but I do remember a couple of things. One of the basic principles of capitalism is profit maximization. The other is externalities. I.e., if you can get someone else to pay for some of the messes you create, you can make more profit. Oh wait, now I get it: Business and the wealthy enjoy socialism; the rest of us get capitalism.

Last week, the right-wing Toronto Sun featured an article by John Snoblen, a high school dropout who was a Minister of Education under a previous Tory Government. Snoblem, who applauded Ford’s decisions to date, was most famous for being caught arguing that in order to more easily accomplish their policies, it was necessary to create a crisis.

That’s the way the game is played. I’m not suggesting that the old Liberal policies represented a moment toward a fairer society etc., but the new Conservative government’s early decision suggest that this is a taste of things to come.

Faith Goldy Display's Her Understanding of Gun Safety At Roger Stone's and Milo Yiannopoulos' Discount "Eyes Wide Shut" Party

Back in May 2017, Cassandra Fairbanks, a Trump supporter who runs in alt-right circles, was present at Roger Stone's home (at least that is how it was described to me) in Miami where he was hosting a party for pedophile apologist Milo Yiannopoulos that was being called Cinco de Milo.

Get it? Huh? HUH?!?

It's funny because they're all assholes.

Fairbanks was present in part because she was scheduled to interview Stone the next day, though given how soused she appeared in the video as she narrates, she seems to have imbibed a fair amount so she might not be asking any hardball questions.... I can't say she wouldn't ask for a highball though.

I'm here all week folks! Try the veal and please remember to tip your server!

How can I describe the setting to establish the mood?

Well, there is a definite "ick" factor. I mean, I'm not sure I would have attended unless all my vaccinations were up to date and even then I wouldn't touch anything. At one point Fairbanks says she wasn't wearing her shoes. I hope that she had a whole lot of penicillin the next day or, hell, just burnt off her feet to be safe.

Really, the whole ambiance reminded me of a stereotypical nightclub in Russia frequented by members of the mafia, but not one of the good clubs. More like one frequented by fourth tier mobsters who run a blue jeans smuggling ring and who head into Uryupinsk for a good time.

I also had the unnerving feeling that there was a porn movie being shot upstairs. Perhaps several.

If you think I'm exaggerating about any of this, here is the host on the night of the party:

Doug Ford Stands Behind This Photo He Took With a Group of Extremely Racist White Nationalists

Far-right extremists are using their photo with Ford to legitimize hate

September 24, 2018
Ontario Premier Doug Ford will not disavow a group of white nationalists who took a photo with him over the weekend at “Ford Fest,” even as the white nationalists use the photo for propaganda purposes to legitimize their views.

Over the weekend, Ford appeared in a photo with a group of white nationalists led by fringe mayoral candidate Faith Goldy, a former Rebel Media contributor who was fired from the far-right website after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast.

Since leaving Rebel Media, Goldy has become a hero to the online alt-right, appearing in videos reciting a white supremacist creed and endorsing a book authored by a 1930s fascist author advocating “the elimination of Jews.”

Image

Appearing alongside Goldy and Ford in the controversial photo are several volunteers on Goldy’s campaign.

One of Goldy’s volunteers is the host of an alt-right podcast who stated he supports white supremacist values in an episode published earlier this month. He is also affiliated with ID Canada, the Canadian branch of Generation Identity, described as a “neo-fascist” and “white nationalist” group operating in Europe that is working to establish a presence in North America.

The volunteer appeared in one of the group’s videos last month, which describes immigration as the “systematic replacement of the founding European people.”

Image

Another Goldy volunteer is a British national who extensively shares alt-right media and promotes UKIP, a far-right party based in Britain. A third volunteer appears in the photo with Ford wearing a hat emblazoned with the logo of the Proud Boys, described by the Southern Poverty Law Centre as an “alt-right fight club” known to instigate riots and hold violent rallies.

But when Ford was asked to disavow Goldy and her alt-right entourage during Question Period on Monday, Ford refused to do so even though the photo is now being used online to suggest Ford is sympathetic to their cause.

Ontario 2018 Civic Election

I've been watching "Murdoch Mysteries".

Anything interesting happening? ;)

Okay, okay!

TORONTO:

Let's start with Faith Goldy. She is currently a very distant third place with 24,852 or 3.39% of the vote. On the one hand it is disappointing that many people voted for her, she doesn't seem likely to break 4% and given her name recognition when associated with "Sun News" and later "Rebel Media" perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise. It also is likely to be the high point in her political career, such that it ever was.

I'm a glass half full sort of person

Other fascists have performed much worse. Chris Brosky running under Don Andrew's Nationalist Party of Canada banner is currently sitting at 2,694 (0.37%) while James Sears of the neo-Nazi rag "Your Ward News" has an emasculating 657 (0.09%) of the vote.

HAMILTON:

Oh, Paulie.... why do you continue to subject yourself to this humiliation. Oh, I know there must be some sort of financial angle, but still, 298 (0.59%) has got to hurt.

MISSISSAUGA:

In terms of the percentage of the vote, Kevin "the Poodle" Johnston is doing the best. As of this writing he has 2,201, or 13.3% of the vote with 309 polling stations out of 692 reporting. It doesn't look however as if there was much of a serious challenge to Bonnie Crombie who is running away with the election and will win a second term so perhaps given his self-promotion Johnston was able to get people to park their vote with him?

Aftermath of Toronto Mayoral Election: White Nationalists Attack Goldy For Ideological Impurity

I've read a lot of people who are justifiably concerned that an odious white nationalist could garner more than 25,000 votes (3.4%) and finish in (albeit a distant) third place in a civic election taking place in one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Playing the devil's advocate, I imagine that part of this number is due to Goldy being a familiar name from her time in both relatively mainstream media (ie. the short-lived Sun News) and her time with Ezra Levant's "Rebel Media." Still, I don't blame anyone for being pretty disgusted that she would get any votes.

But the white nationalists aren't celebrating. Far from it.

There are of course those who remain her supporters who are angry because they erroneously believe the election was stolen from her, however there is a sizable number of her former backers who are angry that she cynically appealed to minority groups and lied about her white nationalist bona fides in order to broaden her appeal. That was evident last night when Richard Spencer, the man who claims to have coined the term, alt-right, engaged in a Twitter storm attacking Goldy:

A Guide To Faith Goldy And How (Not) To Report On Her

Here is the necessary context for covering the neo-Nazi sympathizer and her candidacy for mayor of Toronto

Image

“No one is going to save the white man except for himself,” Goldy went on, growing increasingly agitated, “and yet we’re like, ‘Keep on bringing the immigrants in’… if we don’t do anything about it, it’s only going to get worse. And I’ll be honest — as time goes on, in order to reverse this, the solutions are going to become more and more drastic, and I don’t want that.”

That coming solution? A race war.

And after favourably quoting Richard Spencer — at the time, still a highly influential neo-Nazi known for advocating a “peaceful ethnic cleansing” of nonwhites in America, and whose dream of establishing a white ethno-state she enthusiastically shares — Goldy recited Lane’s cri de coeur: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”

Faith Goldy’s impulsive leap into Toronto’s municipal election is, to quote one former ideological ally who carefully tracked her descent into the darkest corners of the far right, “an exercise in profound selfishness.”

“Goldy knows the result that her actions and associations have — she jokes about it all the time,” wrote Jonathon Van Maren, a social conservative speaker and activist, in an imperfect but well-argued piece laying out the conservative case against Goldy’s candidacy. “By courting conservatives who have everything to lose by associating with her, she is proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that this mayoral run is a vanity exercise that is about her, and nobody else.”

...Despite the polished image she’s been trying to present of herself and her campaign — “We have the best volunteers don’t we folks!?” Goldy recently Tweeted along with a photo in which uniformed police officers happily posed — leaked Discord chat logs offer a hint of what one volunteer called a “pretty barebones operation that seemed to work entirely out of her car.”

“So these Sikhs are apparently pretty damn conservative, some of them told us outright that they were Rob and Doug Ford fans, which is why we were sent to this neighbourhood,” the volunteer wrote, admitting it was “pretty unnerving walking through a suburb that was all Indians. This wasn’t some public housing ghetto or anything, it was a typical looking North American suburb, but full of brown kids riding their bikes through the streets.”

“Diversity doesn’t seem bad if its a few blacks in some projects, or Asians in Chinatown,” the person continued, “but when you see them occupy an entire section of an otherwise normal looking city, it’s a different story… every white person should be made to walk through here.”

The campaign member then suggested fellow “goys” employ this sort of “eye-opening experience” to “help red-pill the masses” in everyday life. “Hopefully I get to [door-knock] in a white area next time though.”

As newsrooms weigh the merits of dedicating already scant resources to covering this marginal figure — one of 35 in the race for mayor — it’s worth noting the absence of pressure to do so with other insignificant candidates. That Goldy and her followers feel she is entitled to be considered equal to frontrunners John Tory and Jennifer Keesmaat doesn’t mean their delusions of grandeur need be indulged, and demands to treat this arguably bad-faith candidate as comparable to even second-tier personalities should be met with skepticism.

After all, it was Goldy herself who positioned the media as “the enemy,” and as with other demagogues who routinely demean the free press, impartial and unbiased reporting will always fail to satisfy her demands. Moreover, efforts to over-compensate for a feared perception of bias can result in uncritical amplification of harmful misinformation which, in the end, does more damage to the reputation of journalism than would the media holding a consistent standard and refusing to be bullied into engaging on the terms of those acting in bad faith.

Esteemed media veteran Ken Whyte, however, suggested the lack of attention paid to Goldy thus far was “antithetical to good journalism” and pointed to a lengthy Q&A by Graeme Gordon — a freelance journalist and frequent CANADALAND contributor — as “the most interesting and comprehensive thing I’ve seen on Toronto’s mayoralty campaign.” But when pressed by National Post columnist Chris Selley about what “story” was being missed, Whyte didn’t seem to have a meaningful answer.

And though Whyte characterizes Goldy as a “populist” candidate, Goldy rejected that very frame just weeks before she announced her intention to run for mayor on July 27.
