The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon following reports of shots fired in the vicinity of the chamber. A Capitol Police officer was injured.

The FBI was responding to the scene. A message from the Capitol Police ordered anyone in a House office to "shelter in place."

"Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows," the message said.

The House recessed, and the Senate went into a quorum call — dispensing momentarily with its official business — shortly thereafter.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted: Shots fired outside the Capitol. We are in temporary lock down.

Last night, Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy, R, was the victim of a "minor incident" outside of the Capitol complex.

"A random individual, unknown to the Congressman, began screaming at him and grabbed his arm," a spokesperson for Duffy said in describing the incident. "Mr. Duffy was unharmed. He reported the incident in compliance with House security procedures. Congressman Duffy has requested no further action be taken and there will be no further comment on the matter at this time."

On September 16, a deadly shooting occurred blocks south of the U.S. Capitol complex which contributed to a partial lockdown of the Capitol at that time.

Police are scrambling after reports of gunfire at the U.S. Capitol. The nature of the disturbance is not currently known, but witnesses at the Capitol building describe a scene of mayhem.

“Gun shots in front of Capitol. Cops scrambling. Not a joke,” tweeted NBC’s Luke Russert at 2:19 p.m. local time.

Alex Leary of Leary Reports also took to Twitter with a photo of a tactical officer at a gun tripod, writing, “Something happening outside Capitol. Police running around with guns at ready.”

At 2:25 p.m., the Associated Press reported that the entire U.S. Capitol and related facilities are on lockdown.

UPDATE, 2:44 p.m.: NBC reported that one person is injured, a Capitol Police Officer who was injured in a vehicle crash.

UPDATE, 2:51 p.m.: NBC reported that witnesses said the event began with a car chase, a small black car that sped toward the Capitol with Capitol Police in pursuit. In front of the building there was an exchange of gunfire, then the car chase resumed.

The Capitol Police officer was injured in a crash that ended the second car chase. The officer has been airlifted by helicopter to be treated for his injuries.

UPDATE, 3:00 p.m.: Dana Bash of CNN reported that the lockdown has been lifted. She was with Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) and his staff when the alert was sounded.

UPDATE, 3:05 p.m.: Think Progress and other sources are reporting that the car chase began in front of the White House, then the black car sped toward the Capitol while exchanging gunfire with police.

Police said that multiple individuals may have been injured.

UPDATE, 3:14 p.m.: NBC’s Pete Williams confirmed that the disturbance began with a black car rushing the White House. National Park Police pursued the vehicle, which next came to a stop in front of the Capitol Building, where gunfire was exchanged.

UPDATE, 3:19 p.m.: ABC News reported that a female suspect attempted to ram the White House gates is now deceased.

UPDATE, 3:25 p.m.: ABC News reported that a young child was found unharmed in the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle had out-of-state tags. The woman was not carrying any ID.

UPDATE, 3:39 p.m.: Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine confirmed at a press conference that shots were fired, but that the injured Capitol Police officer was not injured by gunfire. The woman was not carrying ID and no weapons were found in her vehicle.

UPDATE, 3:58 p.m.: Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance W. Gainer confirmed to the Washington Post that the child from the black vehicle was taken to the hospital.

The House reconvened at 3:30 p.m., and Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, asked for a brief moment of silence in tribute to members of the Capitol Police injured in the incident. The House immediately pivoted back to debate over a small stopgap bill to reinstate funding for veterans’ affairs.

STAMFORD -- A Stamford woman was shot and killed after trying to ram her car into the White House gate and leading police on a high-speed chase past the Capitol with her 18-month-old daughter in tow.

Miriam Carey, 34, of 114 Woodside Green drove her black Infiniti sedan onto a driveway leading to the White House, over a set of lowered barricades. When Carey couldn't get through a second barrier, she spun the car in the opposite direction, flipping a Secret Service officer over the hood of the car as she sped away, said B.J. Campbell, a tourist from Portland, Ore.

A representative of Carey's family in Brooklyn, N.Y. said the family is still gathering information and was surprised by Thursday's incident. The family is expected to issue a statement later Thursday night, said Dennis Jones, a friend of the family.

Carey's car at one point had been surrounded by police cars and she managed to escape, careening around a traffic circle and past the north side of the Capitol. Video shot by a TV camerman showed police pointing firearms at her car before she rammed a Secret Service vehicle and continued driving. Lanier said police shot and killed her a block northeast of the historic building.

One Secret Service member and a 23-year veteran of the Capitol Police were injured. Officials said they are in good condition and expected to recover.

"This appears to be an isolated, singular matter, with, at this point, no nexus to terrorism," said Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine.

Police shot and killed Carey just outside the Hart Senate Office Building, where many senators have their offices. Dine said an officer took the child from the car to a hospital. She is in good condition under protective custody, officials said.

Police along with federal law enforcement officials have descended on the Woodside Green condominium complex near downtown. A police official on the scene confirmed their presence is tied to the Capitol shooting.

Police using a bomb-detecting robot have entered 114 Woodside Green where Carey lives. Federal agents showed neighbors a photo of the suspect, but did not identify the woman, according to neighbors. Residents of the complex are not being allowed to reenter their homes.

Stamford police and FBI agents converged on the scene. Two plain clothes officers escorted a woman into the building and emerged a short time later, the woman carrying a small white dog.

Vanessa Fabre, who moved into Woodside Green this past February, shook her head when she heard the woman involved may be one of her neighbors.

"That's crazy," she said.

Fabre just drove into the complex parking lot and saw the police surrounding the complex and two news helicopters hovering overhead.

"The people here seem very nice, but there are some weird people here."

and she has been under investigation in Conn. before this happened
