A hallmark of fascism is toxic masculinity

You REALLY do need to get out more, perhaps read more as well.

Masculinity has nothing to do with fascism and is not toxic. Masculinity is not about rape or criminal behavior, those are psychopathic or sociopathic behaviors. Masculinity is no better or worse than femininity. Let's get this straight as it's painfully obvious that you are clueless about what being a masculine male is about.

Got any better dog whistles? This one is lame.

Okay, now you got me laughing. Damn, there must be some seriously fucked up people who want to be punished if they pay her and have to hear all that.

You haven't addressed the part about masculinity not being toxic or having a damn thing to do with fascism. But ya know, if you're simply unable, just keep pumping out the links to BDSM stuff, maybe it will increase the audience that visits RI.

This being in reference to your other post: Meet The Dominatrix Who Requires The Men Who Hire Her To Read Black Feminist Theory

Turning Point USA's blooming romance with the alt-right

On Monday, February 12, Kaitlin Bennett, president of the Kent State University chapter of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), a self-proclaimed “student movement for free markets and limited government,” posted a scathing resignation letter online titled “I’m Turning Point USA’s Top Activist in the Country, & I Quit this Shitty Organization.”

Addressed to a field director and a regional manager for TPUSA, Frankie O’Laughlin and Alana Mastrangelo, respectively, the letter detailed Bennett’s perceived lack of support from the national organization, but made some pointed claims related to the racist “alt-right.”

Bennett asserted that O’Laughlin “told us we were not allowed to bring Kyle Chapman (the Based Stickman) to our campus since Turning Point wants to distance itself from the alt-right.” Chapman is the founder of the Proud Boys-affiliated Fraternal Order of Alt Knights, which he called the “tactical defensive arm” of the “western chauvinist” Proud Boys.

Bennett went on to point out the hypocrisy of O’Laughlin rejecting Chapman as a guest, since O’Laughlin himself was “liking tweets from notorious Charlottesville attendee and white nationalist icon, James Allsup,” and posted a screengrab of an Allsup tweet O’Laughlin liked. Allsup is an alt-right YouTube personality and speaks at white nationalist rallies.

The same day Bennett’s resignation letter was posted online, the Kent State chapter of TPUSA disbanded itself. Bennett did not respond to a request for comment from Hatewatch.

Just 10 days earlier, on February 2, a speaking engagement at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado, by TPUSA founder and director Charlie Kirk attracted a contingent of white nationalists from the Traditionalist Worker Party (TWP). In the runup to the event, anti-immigrant fliers attributed to TWP had been posted on the CSU campus, causing both CSU’s president and its local TPUSA chapter to respond.

“The TWP goes by various names online, but let me keep this simple: a Nazi is a Nazi is a Nazi. And the members of the Traditionalist Worker Party are unapologetic Nazis who advocate murdering all those who don’t align with their worldview,” CSU president Tony Frank wrote in a public statement.

Regarding Kirk’s speaking engagement, titled “Smashing Socialism,” Frank wrote, “the recent appearance of white nationalist rhetoric on campus has been conflated with this speaker and caused concerns about the safety and security of religious groups, people of color, and other targeted populations relative to protestors and counter-protestors that may show up on campus Friday evening.”

CSU’s TPUSA chapter responded with a statement saying, “TPUSA at CSU and UNC [University of Northern Colorado] condemns white nationalism and embraces students from all backgrounds.”

While TPUSA founder Kirk was giving his speech, a group of alleged TWP members showed up on campus wearing masks and carrying shields, chanting the Nazi rallying cry “blood and soil!” The neo-Nazis briefly clashed with anti-racist protesters, and Kirk later crowed about the confrontation on Twitter:

Got heated today after my speech today at Colorado State University
Had ANTIFA, disgusting white-nationalists, and hundreds of protestors outside event
Why free speech is awesome: these handful of radicals screamed at each other while hundreds of students filled our event!

During his speech, Kirk acknowledged the white nationalists outside, but distanced himself and TPUSA from the neo-Nazis. “That BS they’re trying to say out there, it’s not who we are, it’s not what we believe, it’s not what Turning Point believes,” he said.

“It’s very funny, they say, ‘Oh Charlie, you must be an ethno-nationalist because these four people with no lives show up outside your event. First of all, that’s a bunch of nonsense. Second of all, I don’t remember anyone saying that when all the communists show up to the Democrat events.”

Still, in his appearance Kirk decried the concept of white privilege, calling the idea racist because the idea is based on skin color. “They’re trying to discredit good ideas and good arguments, just because you’re white, and that’s ridiculous,” he said.

So what exactly is Turning Point USA, and why is the organization so attractive to neo-Nazis and the alt-right?

TPUSA claims chapters on over 1,000 college and high school campuses across the country. It markets itself saying it promotes freedom, free markets and limited government — a brand of conservatism squarely aimed at millennials. Donald Trump, Jr., and his sister-in-law Lara Trump have promoted TPUSA, and according to a New Yorker expose on the group, “[a]mong its planks are the defunding of progressive organizations on campus, the implementation of ‘free speech’ policies eliminating barriers to hate speech, and the blocking of all campus ‘boycott, divestment and sanctions’ movements.”

TPUSA has also been accused of violating spending cap and transparency rules at different college campuses by funneling “dark money” into student government elections, according to the New Yorker article. The piece also suggested TPUSA may have broken campaign finance laws by working to aid Republican presidential candidates in 2016.

Then there’s TPUSA’s “Professor Watchlist,” a McCarthy-ist website featuring professors at universities across the country who TPUSA says “discriminate against conservative students and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.”

Wendy Lynne Lee, a philosophy professor at Bloomsburg University (BU) in rural Pennsylvania for more than a quarter-century (who’s not yet on the Professor Watchlist), began tracking TPUSA’s activities in 2016. “Here was an organization that had a mission statement that said one thing: libertarian, free market, conservative… fine, but whose activities, affiliations, sources of funding, whose Twitter feed did not cohere, did not line up with its mission statement,” she says.

Lee began collecting a “bibliography” documenting connections between TPUSA, its funders, advisors and guest speakers and online expressions of antisemitism, anti-Muslim sentiment, racism, misogyny and anti-LGBT bias, as well as connections to prominent alt-right personalities.

When Lee discovered there was a TPUSA chapter on her campus at BU, she went to the group’s campus advisor with her concerns and her bibliography. “These kids have free speech rights,” she explains, “but my issue was with formal university recognition that gets them access to all kinds of university-funded things and the use of the university logo. My objection to them wasn’t that they had a right to be here on campus.”

Lee failed in her attempt to get TPUSA’s official campus recognition rescinded, and as a protest, put a hand-scrawled poster in her office window reading “BU-Turning Point USA = Alt-Right = White Supremacism.” When a local news report said some students were concerned the sign endorsed white supremacy, she changed it to read, “Reject white supremacism. Reject BU-Turning Point USA.”

The backlash was swift. Days later posters appeared on Lee’s campus reading, “WARNING COMMUNIST PROFESSORS TEACH ON THIS CAMPUS.” An online meme with a photo of an animated Lee yelling behind a podium at an anti-fracking protest read, “THIS EXTREMIST PROFESSOR CLAIMS THAT FREEDOM IS THE NEW ‘WHITE SUPREMACY’ - WAIT… THAT WOMAN IS ALLOWED TO TEACH?!” It was shared nearly 3,000 times on Facebook.

One connection Lee had highlighted in her bibliography was with alt-right misogynist Ivan Throne, a preposterous figure who spoke at TPUSA’s Mountain West Regional Conference in Denver in March 2017. Throne, who poses as a mysterious warrior persona he calls “Dark Triad Man,” and whose book has been endorsed by prominent white nationalist Greg Johnson on his Counter-Currents website, struck back on his own website in an article titled “The Incredible Howling Damp Virago of Bloomsburg University,” implying Lee was involved in the ecoterrorism movement.

It’s not difficult to find connections between TPUSA and explicit bigoted discrimination. In the New Yorker expose, reporter Jane Mayer was provided screenshots of a text message from TPUSA’s (now former) national field director, Crystal Clanton, that read, “i hate black people. Like fuck them all… I hate blacks. End of story.” Clanton did not dispute the text’s authenticity.

Clanton left TPUSA after the organization realized the text had been made public, but the article points out that while founder Kirk served as TPUSA’s “public face,” Clanton “acted as its hands-on boss,” and quotes Kirk saying Clanton was “the best hire we ever could have made,” and “Turning Point needs more Crystals; so does America.”

Another former Turning Point employee quoted in the New Yorker story says she was the organization’s only African-American field director, and Clanton fired her on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

Kirk himself, besides advocating for the elimination of so-called safe spaces for minority students on campus and claiming that the concept of white privilege is itself racist, recently tweeted “Fact: A police officer is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male, than an unarmed black man is to be killed by a police officer” (a flawed statistic promulgated by neoconservative conspiracy theorist Dennis Prager). Kirk has also posted anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim tweets.

A member of TPUSA’s advisory council, multimillionaire Foster Friess, has funded anti-Muslim organizations and urged students to “be more intolerant” in a commencement speech.

Anti-Muslim sentiment seems all too common in TPUSA. The president of TPUSA’s chapter at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Colby Weatherspoon, has tweeted the anti-Muslim hashtag #IslamControlNow and claims membership in the misogynistic “western chauvinist” Proud Boys in his Twitter bio.

During Islam Awareness Week at the University of Miami last March, a TPUSA member, Driena Sixto, co-hosted a “counter info session” called “The Truth of Being a Woman of Islam” which its organizer summed up as “being a woman of Islam often comes with many dangers.”

And TPUSA was blasted for antisemitism after a writer named Adam Weinstein criticized the group on Twitter by responding on its official TPUSA account, “The best ‘grift’ this morning is having a guy named Weinstein criticize young people for wanting fewer hands in their pockets. Too good.” TPUSA later deleted the tweet and apologized, saying it was a reference to Harvey Weinstein rather than an insult regarding Jewish stereotypes.

TPUSA has also featured former congressman Joe Walsh as a speaker at events. Walsh has been criticized as racist and anti-Muslim for his controversial statements and tweets, and was fired from a talk radio host gig in 2014 for using racial slurs — which didn’t seem to deter him, since he subsequently tweeted, “Found out if I said Redskins or Cracker or Redneck Bible Thumper, I could stay on. But if I said Nigger or Spick, they cut me off.”

While TPUSA and Charlie Kirk claim to “condemn” the racist alt-right that seem to support the organization, as witnessed by the Traditionalist Worker Party demonstration in Fort Collins in early February, evidence is amassing that the attraction between the entities is largely mutual.

Lyndon LaRouche’s use of anti-Semitism

Image

In 1975, not long after LaRouche had completed his fascist turn, he came into contact and formed a partnership with Willis Carto, who was the founder of the Liberty Lobby and the most prominent anti-Semite of the time. Carto put out a magazine called The Spotlight that had a paid circulation of almost 200,000 in 1979. LaRouche’s targets became the same as his: the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds, Henry Kissinger, and the Council on Foreign Relations. And like many ultrarightists today, starting with David Duke, Carto was staunchly anti-Zionist. This might help understand why people like David Duke are sympathetic to Bashar al-Assad today. He is a symbol of resistance to Israel. Just ask Max Blumenthal.

Not long after Carto and LaRouche bonded, The Spotlight began publishing articles by National Caucus of Labor Committee (NCLC) members writing under pen names, including his Jewish members who were plentiful. You were also able to buy LaRouche’s publications through Carto’s mail-order service.

The anti-Semitic dynamic accelerated after LaRouche traveled to Germany to straighten out some problems among his followers there. On that trip, he met Helga Zepp who he would soon marry. Zepp remains an important figure in his movement today even as she is a care-giver to the 94-year old man in his dotage. When he returned to the USA, his newspaper New Solidarity began publishing the same kind of articles as Spotlight but with more of an anti-capitalist coloring.

In 1986, ex-member Linda Ray explained why Jewish members went along with this:

Many people find it difficult to understand how Jews—such as I—could have worked for an anti-Semitic group. Perhaps the answer is that the members get so hypnotized by the simplistic “good guys and bad guys” approach to history that they do not hear what LaRouche is really saying.

For example, a 1974 edition of LaRouche’s Campaigner magazine falsely reported that Britain put Hitler in power. Britain, the story said, was the initial controller of the Nazi German war machine, before it went out of control. LaRouche kept writing on that theme for many years. By 1978, he even was writing how the British were a different, “subhuman species.”

Since the blasts were overtly directed against the British, Jewish members often did not recognize the subliminal anti-Semitism of the attacks. LaRouche, like the Ku Klux Klan, Hitler and Goebbels, was attacking the Rothschilds and other British-Jewish banking interests. In the wake of these anti-Semitic writings, many of us were confused. But we continued to defend LaRouche by lamely saying, “We’re not anti-Semitic. So many of our members are Jews. We always say in our publications that we are against the Nazis.”

Today, George Soros is added to the mix. For the alt-right, he is a like a villain plucked out of a James Bond movie who is masterminding conspiracies all around the world. Reflecting the agenda of the Breitbart right, blogger and provocateur Mike Cernovich has depicted Soros and the Rothschilds as orchestrating the purge of Steve Bannon from the White House in this cartoon:

Image

That is Trump’s National Security Adviser Herbert McMaster on the left and David Petraeus on the right. The image suggests that the Jews are controlling everything.

While clearly the bailiwick of the far right, there are signs of the same sort of anti-Semitic tropes on nominally leftist websites. Indeed, if you looked at LaRouche’s press when he was still arguably on the left, you can see the same sort of thing.

Let’s take a look at 21st Century Wire, a website that features articles by Vanessa Beeley and that was launched by an Infowars editor. There you will find the same sort of crap. A search on Rothschild will turn up a shocking article titled “The Money Changers: Rothschild Banking Dynasty Said To Be Worth $100 Trillion” by an asshole named Dean Henderson who has also written for In These Times, for what that’s worth.

The article begins with a dead giveaway that it feeds from the same trough as Willis Carto and LaRouche’s fascist cult:

Since America’s inception…

there has been a lingering notion that European Illuminati bankers seek to bring America to its knees and return it to the fold of the Crown of England, which centuries ago became the key political vassal for the Eight Families who own majority stock in every private central bank in the world — Rothschild, Rockefeller, Kuhn Loeb, Lehman, Goldman Sachs, Warburg, Lazard and Israel Moses Seif.

In sync with LaRouche, Henderson claims that “Zionist Bankers Created Nazism, White Supremacy & Eugenics”.

If many of the Jews like Linda Ray had no problem writing anti-Semitic articles for LaRouche’s press, you can something of the same tendency in the writings of Gilead Atzmon who wrote some really filthy stuff on DissidentVoice, a website that has become very problematic over the past decade despite its honorable origins as a voice against Bush’s “war on terrorism”. On April 13, 2013, Atzmon wrote this:

But, as ubiquitous as they are, AIPAC, CFI, ADL, Bernie Madoff, ‘liberator’ Bernard Henri Levy, war-advocate David Aaronovitch, free market prophet Milton Friedman, Steven Spielberg, Haim Saban, Lord Levy and many other Zionist enthusiasts and Hasbara advocates are not necessarily the core or the driving force behind Jewish Power, but are merely symptoms. Jewish power is actually far more sophisticated than simply a list of Jewish lobbies or individuals performing highly developed manipulative skills. Jewish power is the unique capacity to stop us from discussing or even contemplating Jewish power. It is the capacity to determine the boundaries of the political discourse and criticism in particular.

Finally, there is Information Clearing House, another website with a trajectory like DissidentVoice. They published an article by one John Kaminski claiming “Jewish Media Myths Leading Us Toward World War III”. Metapedia, an alt-right version of Wikipedia, identifies him as “best known for his works on Jewish supremacism and as a critic of Judaism.” Yeah, they got that right based on the article:

But just because I revile Hitler doesn’t mean I believe the fictions the Jewish dominated media have spun about the Holocaust. I have been driven irrevocably into the category of Holocaust denier (a 1947 AP story said 875,000 Jews were killed in Germany during WW II) simply because of the way the Jewish community has trumpeted its martyrdom for financial gain, how the Jewish community has destroyed freedom of speech in a dozen European countries by making it a crime to talk about the events that led up to World War II.

Here is some other Kaminski jewels cited on Metapedia:

The Jews are traitors to every country that they live in. Everyone in the entire world needs to wake up and realise what Jewish influence, Jewish poison medicine, Jewish fake wars and Jewish control of their money supplies have done to everyone in the entire world. It is easily the greatest crime ever committed by humans. The sad thing about Jewish philosophy is, after they wind up destroying everybody else, they won’t be able to avoid destroying themselves.

Jews promote diversity because it dilutes the ethnic fabric of nations and allows the tribe to assimilate and exploit more efficiently. They are better able to hide in a confusing racial mix, where people are less likely to notice they are ruthless Asian nomads, who destroy societies because they never really had one of their own that they didn’t steal from someone else.

I should mention that Kaminski is quite the regular at Information Clearing House, having published 8 articles over the years.

So, About Those Laura Loomer Legal Costs.....

It has been a while since ARC posted a story concerning Ezra Levant and "Rebel Media." In some ways they seem to have recovered from the disastrous spring and summer of 2017; the anti-Semitic rants of Gavin McInnes, Laura Southern and Faith Goldy dancing around the edges of white nationalism (Goldy herself appears to have definitively taken the plunge into white nationalist after her Charlottesville experience), the scandal in which Levant agreed to pay what he referred to as "hush money" (his words), and other incidents that were significant body blows. As a result a number of high profile "Rebel Media" personalities left either because they didn't want to be associated with the brand any longer, appeared to have had "creative disagreements" with Levant, or they were fired. The latest to go appears to be EDL founder Tommy Robinson (born Stephen Christopher Yaxley) who has now, "gone independent":...

Since then there hasn't been a hell of a lot of action on the surface. The major Canadian political parties cut "Rebel Media" off and refused to participate in any press events with them, though it would appear that the Conservative Party of Canada and the United Conservative Party of Alberta might be quietly realigning themselves with "Rebel Media." Included in more recent news is the fact that Hamish Marshall, one of the co-founders of "Rebel Media", is now working for Andrew Scheer and that "Rebel Media" was paid handsomely for some reason by former Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch presumably for some services rendered.

But let's go back where I mentioned the "Rebel Media" personalities who have since left Mr. Levant's services and look specifically at one Laura Loomer.

ARC posted a story on Loomer before concerning a feud between herself and another alt-right personality into which Lauren Southern (and to a much lesser extent Faith Goldy) stepped in. Loomer wasn't with "Rebel Media" for long but for a brief time she was one of the most visible of Levant's hires. In June 2017, Loomer stormed the stage at a "Shakespeare in the Park" performance of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" at the Delacorte Theater in New York. The staging had recently become controversial because, adapting the play to a more modern setting, the character Julius Caesar was portrayed by an actor with a similar look to the current occupant of the White House. Despite previously having the same role played by an African-American actor when Mr. Obama was in office, conservatives were enraged and demanded the play be shut down, Ms. Loomer amongst them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz3E-IyybAc

The person who filmed this is Jack Posobiec who had also briefly worked for "Rebel Media" which began to suggest that this wasn't exactly a spontaneous act of righteous indignation, a feeling further confirmed when it appeared that Ezra Levant had already purchased the domain name, "FreeLaura.com" six hours before Loomer acted.

Counter-Culture Fascism

Image

1. The discussion begins with the frightening and terrifying situation of the late Joe Ferguson, whose posthumous admiration of neo-Nazis, Charles Manson and Timothy McVeigh motivated his mass-murder/ suicide. It was while watching the recounting of the ghastly events of 9/11 that Mr. Emory absorbed the account of this smaller horror. Indeed, Ferguson’s psychological projection of his personality into a posthumous conception is, in certain respects, like the behavior of the 9/11 attackers. Like James Cagney, in the movie “White Heat”, the hijackers and Ferguson imagined that their fiery demise would imbue them with a combination of notoriety and physical transcendence. By disseminating a poisonous adulation of Manson and his ilk, the purveyors of counter-culture fascism, quite deliberately in most cases, set others on their course toward oblivion. The unmitigated evil propagated by Michael Moynihan, Boyd Rice, publishing guru Adam Parfrey and their fellow travelers is set forth in this program.

“Agitated, shirtless under his body armor and holding a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, disgruntled security guard Joseph Ferguson stared straight into the video camera held by a man who would shortly become the fifth life snuffed out in Ferguson’s 24-hour killing spree. ‘I’ve taken four victims,’ Ferguson said from the Rancho Cordova home where he held a Burns International Security colleague and his wife hostage for nearly 18 hours before shooting himself to death in a gunbattle with officers. ‘That should be enough to last a week in the news. . . . He was fascinated with neo-Nazism, Timothy McVeigh and Charles Manson. . . . .”

“Sacramento Killer Vowed Not to Be Taken Alive” by Michelle Guido; San Jose Mercury News; 9/11/2001; pp. 1A-14A.

2. Introducing the book that is at the center of this discussion, author Kevin Coogan encapsulates the story of Black Metal musician Varg Vikernes and his victim, Oystein Aarseth. This story is the centerpiece of Lords of Chaos, co-authored by Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind.

“Lords of Chaos, a recent book-length examination of the Satanic black metal music scene is less concerned with sound than fury. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind zero in on Norway, where a tiny clique of black metal musicians torched some churches in 1992. The church burners’ own price of worship was a small Oslo record store called Helvete (Hell). Helvete was run by the godfather of Norwegian black metal, Oystein Aarseth (‘Euronymous’, or ‘Prince of Death’), who first brought black metal to Norway with his group Mayhem and his Deathlike Silence record label. . . .”

“How Black is Black Metal?” by Kevin Coogan; Hitlist; February/March 1999 [Volume One, Number One]; p. 1.

3. Reflecting the mythologizing of what is, in reality (for most creatures who pursue this type of music and culture), a mediocre, inglorious existence, Vikernes named himself after a figure from Lord of the Rings.

” . . . Lords of Chaos, however, is far less interested in Euronymous than in the man who killed him, Varg Vikernes, a church burner who dubbed himself ‘Count Grishnackh’ after an evil ogre in Lord of the Rings. Vikernes is now serving a 21-year sentence—Norway’s toughest penalty—in a maximum security prison for brutally stabbing Euronymous to death on August 10, 1993. After his arrest just seven days later, the Count justified himself by claiming that Euronymous was a communist ‘queer’ who had cheated him out of Burzum royalties. He also claimed that Euronymous was plotting to kill him. After being ostracized from the black metal community, Vikernes announced that he was now no longer a black metal Satanist, but rather a Nazi Odinist because the Jews had ‘killed my father Odin.'”

(Idem.)

4. Coogan notes that Moynihan infers from the behavior of Vikernes a growing trend among Black Metal aficionados toward murder and violence. As will be seen, this inference is itself a projection of Moynihan’s own political orientation and not necessarily a reflection of the bulk of black metal musicians and fans.

“If Lords of Chaos were only about the antics of the most extreme wing of black metal, it would be an informative and entertaining look at pop culture Grand Guignol. The book, however, suggests that the events in Norway reflect a growing tendency among alienated youth from Miami to Moscow, who are now allegedly blending black metal, Satanism, and currents of fascism into a culturally explosive Molotov cocktail. Vikernes, however, is really famous for murder, not music, while the overwhelming majority of black metal musicians and fans are not, and are not likely to become, church burners, murderers, or Nazi Odinists.”

(Idem.)

5.

“To buttress its thesis, LORDS OF CHAOS points to metalheads turned murderers, including ‘Balfagor’ from the Swedish Satanic band Nefandus, who attacked a black man in a self-described ‘niggerhunt’; Bard Eithun (‘Faust’) from the Norwegian group Emperor, who murdered a gay man that sought to seduce him; and Jon Nodveidt from the Swedish group Dissection, who butchered an Algerian immigrant. LORDS OF CHAOS even devotes an entire chapter to an obscure two-man German band called Absurd, who coldly executed an annoying fellow high school student. Although the members of Absurd are self-proclaimed Nazis and Vikernes fans, even they reported that they committed the crime for personal, not political, motives.”

(Ibid.; p. 2.)

6.

“LORDS OF CHAOS also dwells on the activity of otherwise highly obscure fascist propagandists with no direct ties to black metal who are nevertheless trying to recruit its followers into their cause. It even adopts a far right spin on Jungian theory when it suggests that Vikernes may have tapped into an anti-Christian racial/cultural archetype that is allegedly still aglow in the Norwegian collective unconscious. The book also profiles racist killers with no known ties to black metal, such as the Florida youth clique called the Lords of Chaos. Before being dethroned by local police, the Lords burnt down a church, murdered a gay teacher, and were planning to slaughter black visitors to Disney World with silencer-equipped automatic weapons.”

(Idem.)

7.

“LORDS OF CHAOS culminates with a paean to the ‘fire, which, it claims, burns bright inside the black metal under-ground despite the attempts of mysterious unnamed ‘forces of finance and materialism’ to ‘root it out and stamp it out.'”

8. Feral House, the publisher of Lords of Chaos, distributes one of Vikernes’ CD’s. In this context, it is significant that Feral House owner Adam Parfrey is part of a counterculture, Social Darwinist/fascist milieu that overlaps both the alternative music and publishing fields.

” . . . Lords of Chaos’s publisher, Feral House, itself distributes one of Vikernes’ Burzum CD’s ‘Filosfem’. . . LORDS OF CHAOS has generally been perceived as an expose of a colorful music sub-culture, and it does indeed provide much valuable information about an otherwise inaccessible scene. Yet what really makes the book fascinating is that its main author, Michael Moynihan, is himself an extreme rightist whose fusion of politics with aesthetic violence shapes a not-so-hidden sub current that runs throughout LORDS OF CHAOS. The book itself, however, is not a ‘fascist’ tract in the strict sense of the term, in part because Moynihan co-wrote the book with Didrik Soderlind, a former music critic for a mainstream Norwegian paper who is now an editor at Playboy. Moreover, Feral House editor Adam Parfrey clearly wanted to publish a popular book on the strange universe of black metal rather than a political polemic. Nor does Moynihan himself fit easily into the more conventional definitions of fascism. LORDS OF CHAOS is best characterized as a palimpsest with the author’s own political ideology at work just below the surface of a text ostensibly devoted solely to analyzing an extremist musical sub-culture.”

(Idem.)

9. One of the points of action and association between Moynihan, and his publisher Adam Parfrey is the Abraxas Foundation, which united both of them with Satanist and fascist Boyd Rice. Abraxas is described by Moynihan as an ‘occultist-fascist think tank’—it is linked to the Church of Satan, about which more will be said later.

“Michael Moynihan is an interesting fellow. . . In 1989, the youthful Bostonian joined forces with the San Francisco-based Abraxas Foundation, which he described as an ‘occultist-fascist think tank’ linked to the Church of Satan. Moynihan dubbed his own wing of the Abraxas Foundation ‘Axis Sanguinaries’ [Blood Axis] because: Blood can be seen as LIFE, and at the same time it can be equated to DEATH. It is essential to violence in almost all instances. It has powerful sexual connotations. It is the key fluid of history . . . [Axis] highlights the genetic aspect of blood, bound together in the will of a people or race. It describes allies of mind and blood, mobilized for total warfare. It also reiterates the pivotal nature of blood in human existence, both personal and world-historic.'”

(Ibid.; pp. 2-3.)

10.

“According to some reports, Moynihan’s blood fetish included drinking (non AIDS-infected) blood. He was also suspected of setting fire to a manger scene on the Cambridge Commons, just across from Harvard University, in 1987, A note left by the firebug at the smoky scene the day after Christmas asked: ‘How many more fires before you realize your gods are dead? DEAD!'”

(Ibid.; p. 3.)

11. Further developing the ideology of Abraxas, the program highlights its fascistic undertones and its emphasis on disseminating this philosophy to youth. (Note the picture of Rice and his American Front protégé Robert Heick, in full Nazi uniform and brandishing daggers for the camera: http://www.canuck.com/Srl/rice.html .)

“As for the Abraxas foundation, it was founded by another blood fetishist named Boyd Rice in 1984. The name came from Abraxas, a Gnostic deity that combined within itself the forces of light and darkness, good and evil. Rice hoped that his foundation would help create ‘a new demographic of people who are into the occult, Fascism, and Social Darwinism. It’s out there as an alternative for kids who are growing up and need that information.’ Both Rice and Moynihan came out of the ‘industrial’ music scene. . . .”

(Idem.)

12. One of the industrial music acts that helped to break the cultural taboo against utilizing fascist imagery was “Throbbing Gristle” and its chief bard Genesis P. Orridge. (Note that Moynihan, among others, held this group and its successor acts in contempt. In Moynihan’s opinion, the group and its leader lacked true fascist political conviction.)

” . . . ‘Throbbing Gristle’, the linchpin of the post-punk ‘industrial’ turn, dressed in camouflage gear decorated with an SS-looking lightning bolt patch, and issued songs like ‘Zyklon B Zombie’ and ‘Salon Kitty’ (named after an SS-run brothel in Berlin). The cover for the Throbbing Gristle song ‘Discipline’ on Fetish Records showed the group outside the former Nazi Ministry of Propaganda building in Berlin. Throbbing Gristle called their hackney-based recording studio the Death Factory, and its Industrial Records logo was an unidentified picture of Auschwitz. Many punks despised Throbbing Gristle as misogynist ‘death art’ fascists. At a July 6, 1978 concert at the London Film Co-op (where Boyd Rice also appeared), a fight even broke out between Throbbing Gristle and members of the Rock Against Racism-allied bands the Slits and the Raincoats. . . .”

(Ibid.; p. 4.)

13. Coogan explains the fascist aesthetics underlying the culture to which “Throbbing Gristle” belongs.

” . . . The Industrialist fascination with taboo breakers extended to charismatic leaders like Hitler and Manson, who became iconic figures in a world where evil was more real than good, and hate more strong than love. Yet because they, like the Marquis de Sade before them, were also fearless disrupters of middle-class morality, a Hitler or Manson were also, in a sense, perverse role models. The sheer bleakness of industrial culture also provided fertile ground for future misanthropy. If evil was more powerful than good, evil was also more natural. In a truly Hobbesian world the Social Darwinists and the Malthusians were right when they argued that only the strong could and should survive.”

(Idem.)

14. Not unprecedented, this worldview reflects one that became extant during the period leading up to World War II.

“. . . The sense of despair felt by industrial culture was not unique. A similar heroic/pessimistic worldview appeared in Europe after World War I. In the early 1920’s there arose what I shall call ‘counter-cultural fascism.’ More a sensibility than a movement, it fused Friedrich Nietzsche’s idea of the individual will-to-power and his contempt for middle-class morality with Oswald Spengler’s belief in the imminent downfall of the West. Artists like Futurist founder Filippo Marinetti, Ezra Pound, Gabriele D’Annunzio, and Ernst Junger viewed traditional forms of conservatism with the same contempt that they felt for social democracy, rationalism, and the Enlghtenment. While Genesis P. Orridge was not really a countercultural fascist, Throbbing Gristle stood on he cusp of a revival of a ‘counter cultural fascist’ turn in segments of haute Bohemia.”

(Idem.)

15.

“Another set of ides associated with the Abraxas network had earlier been promoted by a radical Italian fascist named Franco Freda. Freda, who advocated a combined right-and-left-wing terrorist assault on the middle class Establishment, first outlined his ideas at a 1969 meeting of the far-right European Revolutionary Front in Regensburg, Bavaria. In his talk, which was later published as La Disintegrazione del Sistema [The Disintegration of the System], Freda argued that the ‘nervous system of the bourgeois world’ had to be disrupted with utmost violence by far right ‘political soldiers’ working in an alliance with the far left.”

(Idem.)

16. One of the political/ideological antecedents of the Abraxas fascist aesthetic is Julius Evola. Evola’s work was financed by the SD—the SS intelligence service. (For more about Evola, see—among other programs—FTR#233.)

“Freda derived essential parts of his strategy from the Italian conservative revolutionary theorist Julius Evola, the ‘Herbert Marcuse’ of the postwar European far right. Evola argued in books like Calvacare la Tigre (Riding the Tiger) that the collapse of modern mass society was something to be welcomed, not resisted. Radical Evolans like Freda believed that violent shocks to the system could only hasten the inevitable collapse of the hated modern order. . . .”

(Idem.)

17. Next, the program sets forth the professional development of Adam Parfrey—a fellow in the Abraxas Foundation and the publisher of Lords of Chaos.

” . . . The new hip regime of mean was exemplified by the infamous Los Angeles Amok catalog. Amok Press’ bestseller Apocalypse Culture, a collection of rants, raves, conspiracy theories and aesthetic terrorist tracts, was another key text. Adam Parfrey, owner of Amok and later Feral House, first entered the scene in 1980 with IDEA, a southern California-based Re/Search-type journal about punk culture. He then moved to New York, where he met the art designer George Petros. . . .In 1984, Parfrey and Petros created Exit, a New York-based journal heavy on graphic design.”

(Ibid.; pp. 5-6.)

18. Far from benign and aloof, Parfrey’s literary efforts have served to disseminate the views and efforts of some of the very worst Nazis and fascists.

“Parfrey worked with Petros on the first three issues of Exit, before leaving to create Amok Press. Once a success de scandale, Exit’s increasing fascination with fascism doomed it to just six issues. Issue Five, for example, featured a particularly rancid piece of anti-Semitism entitled ‘The Execution of Carl Jung’, which was ‘conceived by George Petros’ with ‘text researched by Robert N. Taylor,’ a former paramilitary Minuteman leader turned racial Odinist. The final 1994 Exit included contributions from Michael Moynihan and James Mason, an American Nazi whose book Siege was published by Moynihan. While producing Exit, Petros also served as an editor at Seconds, an eclectic New York-based music magazine that Moynihan, Rice, and Parfrey regularly write for.”

(Ibid.; p. 6.)

19. One of the organizations with a philosophical affinity for Abraxas, Genesis P. Orridge, etc., is the Church of Satan and its late founder, Anton LaVey. (Both Moynihan and Boyd Rice are members of this organization.)

“The new glorification of the instinctual and the barbaric, the belief in the survival of the fittest, and the hatred of both Christian morality and liberal humanism were all music to the ears of Anton LaVey, the founder and head of the San Francisco-based Church of Satan. Not surprisingly, Boyd Rice developed close ties with LaVey in the early 1980’s. In 1984, Rice set up the Abraxas Foundation as a ‘social Darwinist think tank.’ An Abraxas tract called WAKE pro-claimed ‘Long Live Death!’ and hailed Malthusianism as ‘Nature’s Eternal Fascism.’ (The Church of Satan also maintained close ties to Genesis P. Orridge.) Today Rice is himself a member of the Church’s governing inner circle, the Council of Nine. . . .”

(Idem.)

20. Among the fellow travellers of LaVey are people who espouse Odinist religion. Within that milieu, in turn, are people of a truly murderous bent. Note the presence in this Satanist/Nazi milieu of the wife of convicted Order murderer David Lane. (For more about The Order, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 89, 386, 399, and the various programs discussing the topics of OJ Simpson case, the Oklahoma City bombing, and Serpent’s Walk. Important background information on The Order can be obtained from RFA’s 10-13—available from Spitfire.)

” . . . LaVey, who is often only seen as a libertarian maverick, called for a new kind of fascism in a 1994 interview with Michael Moynihan in Seconds. Moynihan’s essay, ‘The Faustian Spirit of Fascism,’ was also published in the Church of Satan’s magazine, The Black Flame. LaVey even contributed an introduction to a new edition of ‘Ragnar Redbeard’s Might is Right, a Nietzschean and Social Darwinist tract first published in 1896 which LaVey had liberally plagiarized in his own book, The Satanic Bible. The editor of the new edition of Might is Right is listed as Katia Lane. She is the wife of David Lane, an Odinist leader of the high-profile far right paramilitary group called the Order, who is now serving a life sentence for conspiring to murder a Denver radio personality named Alan Berg.”

(Idem.)

21. The afterword of Might is Right (edited by the wife of convicted Order killer David Lane) was penned by George Hawthorne, head of the Ra Ho Wa racist musical group. Afterword author George Hawthorne is also the founder of Resistance Records, now owned by the National Alliance. (For more about Resistance Records and the National Alliance, see FTR#211.) Before being appropriated by the National Alliance, Resistance Records was distributed by the fascist Liberty Lobby. In charge of this distribution was Todd Blodgett, a former Reagan White House staff member. (For more about the Nazi underpinnings of the Reagan administration, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 180, 332, 421.)

“The author of Might is Right‘s afterword is, arguably, even more; ‘devilish’ than LaVey. He is none other than George Hawthorne, head of the white racist musical group Ra Ho Wa (Racial Holy War) and founder of Resistance Records, whom Michael Moynihan interviewed for Seconds and The Black Flame, Moynihan is also thanked in the new edition of Might is Right for helping make the book possible.”

(Idem.)

22. Promoting and extolling Charles Manson, the Abraxas milieu came into contact with James Mason, among other members of the American Nazi Party.) “In the mid-1980’s, Adam Parfrey formed Amok Press, the precursor to Feral House, with Ken Swezey of the Amok catalog. Amok’s first book, Michael, was an English translation of Nazi Prpaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels’ sole novel. Parfrey’s next book, Apocalypse Culture was followed in 1988 by The Manson File, which was edited by Nikolas Schreck (the boyfriend of LaVey’s daughter Zeena) in collaboration with Boyd Rice and others. Rice regularly visited Manson, and even campaigned to get him released from jail through an Abraxas spin-off called the Friends of Justice.” (Idem.)

23. A pivot point in the development of the Abraxas Foundation’s professional relationship with members and alumni of the American Nazi Party was convicted murderer Perry ‘Red’ Warthan. Warthan catalyzed the relationship between ANP member James Mason and the Abraxas configuration. Among the ranks of the Nazis associated with the Abraxas milieu is Robert Heick, seen here in Nazi uniform with Abraxas/Moynihan/Parfrey colleague Boyd Rice: http://www.canuck.com/Srl/rice.html .)

“Via Manson, the Abraxas circle came into contact with James Mason, a former member of George Lincoln Rockwell’s American Nazi Party (ANP) and the eccentric head of the National Socialist Liberation Front (NSLF). Mason had established contact with Manson in the early 1980’s through an NSLF member named Perry ‘Red’ Warthan. Warthan later murdered a 17-year-old high school student in Oroville, California, because the boy told police that Warthan had been distributing racist literature. In the late 1980’s, Rice got into hot water due to his friendship with Robert Heick is the leader of a skin-head group called American Front that once attacked the San Francisco anarchist bookstore “Bound Together.” Although he denied having any political ties to Heick, the growing unpopularity of Abraxas in San Francisco led Rice to decamp to Denver, Colorado.”

(Ibid.; pp. 6-7.)

24. Next, the program highlights the relationship between Abraxas fellow Adam Parfrey and the late Keith Stimely, the former editor of the Liberty Lobby’s Journal of Historical Review (the leading Holocaust denial publication.) Parfrey hired Stimely to write press releases for Feral House (publisher of Lords of Chaos).

“As for Parfrey, he first moved his publishing operation from New York to Los Angeles. After the LA riots, he relocated to Portland and then returned south to Venice, California. While in Portland, Parfrey (whose own mother is Jewish) hired the late Keith Stimely, an openly gay former editor of The Journal of Historical Review, the world’s leading Holocaust-denial outfit, to write Feral House press releases. Stimely’s name also appeared on a leaflet, along with that of Moynihan and Portland artist Diabolos Rex, as part of a Boyd Rice/NON ‘Total War’ performance in that city. . . .”

(Ibid.; p. 7.)

25. Moynihan’s Storm Press published American Nazi Party member James Mason’s tract Siege, which glorifies Manson and other mass murderers as exemplars of the chaos that National Socialism should embrace. (Joseph Ferguson embodied the tragic distillate of this philosophy.) Significantly, Mason (and through him, Moynihan) advocate violence against the system by anyone—left, right, white black, brown or otherwise.) In this respect, Mason is an advocate of a stance approximating that of the fascist Third Position. (For more about the Third Position, see, among other programs, FTR#’s 252, 285, 352, as well as Miscellaneous Archive Shows M19 and M21, available from Spitfire.) Note that Feral House guru Adam Parfrey assisted in the publication of Siege.

” . . . One year later, Moynihan was more preoccupied by literary than legal matters. His Denver-based Storm Press published Siege, a 400-page anthology of the writings of James Mason, the Nazi fan of Charles Manson. In his acknowledgements, Moynihan (‘Michael M. Jenkins’) thanked (among others) both Adam Parfrey and Anton LaVey for their help in facilitating Siege’s publication. Mason argued in Siege that National Socialism had lost its violent, revolutionary edge. ‘We want to see crime and chaos rise to such a degree where the System becomes no longer viable and falls apart,’ he wrote. In a tract called ‘Smashing the Pig System,’ he growled: ‘If a bunch of Black Nationalists rob a Brinks truck, if they kill some System Pigs, WHO CARES??!!”

(Idem.)

26. Note Siege‘s glorification of James Franklin, the role model for National Vanguard Books’ tract Hunter. That book (published by the literary wing of the National Alliance that also publishes The Turner Diaries and Serpent’s Walk) glorifies the killing of interracial couples.)

“Siege also paid homage to white racist ‘lone wolf’ assassins like Mason’s former American Nazi Party colleague Joseph Franklin, who specialized in shooting interracial couples (‘race traitors’); and James Huberty, who massacred a largely Hispanic clientele at a McDonald’s restaurant in San Diego. Mason felt that the lone wolves mere merely expressing healthy ‘Viking berserker rage’ against ‘Big Brother.’ He especially liked the fact that, since they acted alone, these lone wolves were very difficult to catch. Siege also glorified Charles Manson. Mason even created a Manson-inspired successor group to the NSLF called the Universal Order in an effort to transcend the traditional ‘left-right spectrum.’ In his introduction to Siege, Moynihan also highlighted Mason’s call for a unity of [ideological and behavioral] extremes against the System. . . .”

(Idem.)

27. As bizarrely violent and aberrant as it appears at first glance, the philosophy espoused in Siege and Lords of Chaos reflects the Freda/Evola call the destabilization of the “system.”

” . . . For all its crudeness, Siege echoed Franco Freda’s radical Evolan call for total social disruption in La Disintegrazione del Sistema. Storm also plans to issue the first English translation of Evola’s 1953 book, Gli Uomini e Ie Rovine (Men Among the Ruins). In August 1993, one year after Siege was published, Varg Vikernes murdered Euronymous. Although Moynihan was not a black metalist, the lure of Norway’s new Charles Manson [Vikernes] too much to resist. . . .”

(Idem.)

28. Among the fascist theorists Moynihan relies upon in his book is one “Kadmon”—himself a professional associate of Moynihan’s.

“In Lords of Chaos, Moynihan suggests that Vikernes is an avatar of a long-repressed Odinist archetype analogous to what Jung claimed for Nazi Germany in his famous 1936 essay on Wotan. . . . In Lords of Chaos, Moynihan relies upon ‘Kadmon,’ editor of a Vienna-based journal called Aorta, to bolster the racial archetype thesis. Kadmon argues that Norwegian black metalists are modern day examples of an ancient martial/mystical band of Werewolf-like ‘berserker’ warriors known as the Oskorei. No disinterested scholar, Kadmon is also a political supporter of Vikernes as well as Moynihan’s collaborator. His band Allerseelen, for example, put out a joint CD with Moynihan’s group Blood Axis. A blood fetishist, Kadmon named his journal Aorta because it is ‘a blood-red cycle. In Aorta there is my blood. The blood of the poet, the blood of the magician, the blood of the warrior.’ Kadmon also devoted one issue of Aorta to ‘the Odinist Norwegian composer Varg Vikernes . . .who is currently in prison due to his Viking ethics.'”

(Ibid.; p. 8.)

28. Lords of Chaos neglects to mention that its glorified protagonist Euronymous was planning to dynamite a punk anti-fascist house.

” . . . Given how much valuable information Lords of Chaos does present, it is somewhat incredible that the book fails to note that at the time that Vikernes murdered Euronymous, he was also planning to destroy an Oslo-based punk anti-fascist squat called Blitz House. After his arrest for murder, the police discovered that he had about 330 pounds of stolen dynamite in his possession. . . .”

(Idem.)

29. An even more significant omission is the failure Lords of Chaos to note that among the apparent influences on Vikernes’ murder of Euronymous was the ideology of the Abraxas milieu itself!

“Lords of Chaos also ignores another obvious cultural influence on Vikernes, the Abraxas network’s glorification of killers like Charles Manson! Vikernes’ home town, Bergen, is also home to Jan Bruun’s Hypertonia World Enterprises. Bruun is a major distributor of Charles Manson memorabilia like ‘Watching Satan—the Legacy of Charles Manson.’ He knows Moynihan and interviewed him for an Italian journal aptly named Helter Skelter. Moynihan also thanks Bruun, an avowed social Darwinist and Malthusian, in the acknowledgements to Lords of Chaos. It seems almost impossible to believe that Vikernes would not have known about Hypertonia World Enterprises, especially since Bruun was in contact with Euronymous and even sold Mayhem LP’s.”

(Idem.)

30. Next, the broadcast highlights Moynihan’s own association with the racist/Odinist organization the Asatru Alliance. As with the rest of the Abraxas political/cultural environment, the Asatru Alliance intersects the milieu of the American Nazi Party and the paramilitary Minutemen.

“Despite his use of Kadmon’s theories, Moynihan claims in Lords of Chaos that ‘there is absolutely no specific connection’ between practitioners of Nordic religion and the black metal scene. ‘In fact,’ he writes, ‘public assumptions that such a link would exist have been a severe liability to these groups.’ Moynihan, however, neglects to mention that he himself is a leading member of a U.S. based racialist ‘Old Norse and Germanic religion’ movement called the Asatru Alliance of Independent Kindreds (AA), which in headquartered in Arizona.”

(Idem.)

31.

“The Asatru Alliance evolved out of a 1960’s Odinist/Nordic revival movement called the Asatril Free Assembly. The Asatru Alliance faction argued that a Norse religious movement should only include people of Northern European descent. It also publishes a journal called Vor Tru which is edited by Robert Ward, the former editor of a rightist music zine called The Fifth Path. He is also almost certainly the ‘R, Ward’ thanked by Moynihan for his typesetting contribution to Siege. Another Asatru Alliance, ‘Valgard’ (Michael Murray), was a former member of Rockwell’s American Nazi Party.”

(Idem.)

32. Robert Taylor is another of the unsavory associates of Moynihan and Feral House’s Adam Parfrey. As of 1999, Moynihan lived in Portland Oregon, where he moved in order to work for Feral House.

“Moynihan’s close friend Robert Nicholas Taylor, who publishes an Odinist journal called The Continuing Clan, is yet another Asatru Alliance bigwig with a far right bio. The rightist music journal Ohm Clock reports that during ‘ a 12-year stint as a national spokesman for the Minutemen, he [Taylor] went on to become Director of Intelligence and set up the first guerilla training schools ever to exist in the United States.’ Taylor’s call for the racial balkanization of America, an argument associated with the late ‘Klanarchist’ leader Robert Miles, was also featured in the last issue of Exit. Moynihan now [1999] lives in Portland, where he moved in order to work for Feral House. . . .”

(Ibid.; pp. 9-10.)

33. Moynihan continues to propagandize on behalf of Vikernes. Note that Vikernes’ CD’s are jointly distributed by Feral House audio.

” . . . True to his principles, Moynihan is quite active in the propaganda support network for Vikernes. He is, for example, a leading contributor to a rightist journal called Filosofem, which is published by a group also called Blood Axis. Filosofem is located at 5 Rue Gabriel Price in Metz, France. This same address is the source of a series of pro-Vikernes leaflets which carry the name Cymophane on them. Filosofem also takes its name from a Burzum CD that Vikernes recorded in 1993 while out on bail. That CD is currently being jointly distributed by Misanthropy Records, Cymophane Productions, and Feral House Audio.”

(Ibid.; p. 10.)

34. Another of the occult fascists associated with Moynihan and the Abraxas network is Kerry Bolton, publisher of Nexus among other periodicals.

“Lords of Chaos also contains an interview with Kerry Bolton, a New Zealand-based Satanist who is trying to popularize fascism inside pop culture with a series of small journals like Key of Alocer, The Nexus and The Flaming Sword. His essays have also appeared in The Black Flame and Filosofem. In one of his writings Bolton even calls the Futurist (and later Fascist) Filippo Marinetti a forerunner of ‘Industrial Culture’. His publications also feature Moynihan, R.N. Taylor, Boyd Rice, Kadmon, and others like them. . . .”

(Idem.)

35.

” . . . Bolton also leads an overtly fascist magical sect called the Black Order. The Black Order’s New Zealand address is conveniently reprinted in an illustration in Lords of Chaos. A French far rightist and OTO leader named Christian Bouchet also pops up in Lords of Chaos. Along with publishing his own occult journal Lutte du People he edits. Bouchet advocates an alliance with the far left, applauds Castro for resisting American imperialism, and praises the French nineteenth century anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. H even offered a eulogy for the German ultra-leftist Ulrike Meinhof, a leader of the terrorist Rote Armee Fraktion, RAF. Nouvelle Resistance is also behind a pro-Vikernes music fanzine called Napalm Rock, whose editor Lords of Chaos interviews. Given his own background and publicly proclaimed political views, it seems fairly obvious that Moynihan would not be terribly distraught if a new wave of ‘berserker youth’ chose to follow in Vikernes’ path—regardless of whether or not he holds the Count’s most extreme political statements in high regard.”

A Sad, Racist Hour and a Half Inside Richard Spencer's Hotel Room

Image

Brian Brathovd, a pink-faced white supremacist performing the role of Spencer’s security detail, peered at me quizzically while we waited for the guests to arrive. “So you’re a journalist—at Jezebel. Interesting,” he said, making a face that implied a different kind word.

“I’m like, semi-famous, not really,” he added proudly, when I asked him to repeat his name. “Known around the podcasting scene as ‘Caerulus Rex’.”

Soon, a wave of college-aged CPAC attendees in khakis and tight dresses began to filter in. Many of them would not give reporters their names, or consent to be filmed. A video producer killed the lights as Spencer held court on the balcony, fenced in by glass and cameras and Brian. I felt vaguely like I was inside a fish tank, khakis swirling dreamlike around me.

“You guys are gonna get crushed, bro!” one of the young men howled at his friends.

“Bon-jour!” another, wearing an “I Heart Capitalism” sticker, barked with a grin at the French producer.

“I want to know why he believes what he believes in,” a serious, wide-eyed 17-year-old from New York told me. She wanted to speak to Spencer, she said carefully, because she doesn’t believe bigotry belongs in the Republican party. She was a big supporter of Donald Trump. “I just want to understand why Jewish people and black people and Mexican people, why they’re all so horrible.”

While we spoke, a chiseled, rather keyed-up student named Vincent had taken his seat on the balcony and was yelling at our host about economics. “I’m gonna get up and leave,” Vincent hissed. “I don’t want to hear your justification for discrimination. I came here to call you out on being a socialist.”

Trump’s CPAC: White Nationalists, Social Media Persecution & The War On ‘Fake News’ At The Gaylord Hotel

Image

The Fringe-Right Settles In

Last year, CPAC organizer Matt Schlapp took a stand against welcoming the alt-right onto the stage, claiming that the racist movement was not conservative. But that hasn’t stopped conference organizers from awkwardly courting other far-right political movements. Far-right speakers received varied receptions.

Image
Marion Maréchal-Le Pen

There was poor attendance for Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, niece of the far-right extremist leader of the French National Front party, when she followed Vice President Mike Pence. But Nigel Farage, who was one of the leaders of the “Brexit” movement in the United Kingdom, spoke to a highly energized crowd, praising Trump and warning that his experience in the Brexit campaign proves that liberals will do nearly anything to delegitimize the conservative movement in general and Trump in particular.

Image
Nigel Farage

Farage reportedly met with Trump the night before each spoke at CPAC and told reporters that he saw Trump backstage after his Friday speech. After the speech, while smoking a cigarette on the conference center balcony, Farage said that Trump told him he was excited about the “potential” of working together and that he was optimistic about their partnership going forward.

Leading figures of the self-declared “New Right” movement also attended the conference and could often be found perusing radio row. These included self-declared “New Right” leader Mike Cernovich, pro-Trump pundit and conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, Gateway Pundit reporter Cassandra Fairbanks, Gateway Pundit White House reporter Lucian Wintrich and political operative Ali Akbar.

Dear White America: Your toxic masculinity is killing you

Toxic white masculinity, and the right-wing politics which nurture and protect it, are hurting millions every year

CHAUNCEY DEVEGA
08.02.2015•11:59 AM

Dear White America,

I am your friend. I have written several letters of this type to you before. It pains me to have to do so again. What I am going to share in this letter may be commonsense for many white brothers and sisters. Other White Americans may be surprised. Because our society is so segregated, people of color often do not have many opportunities to talk with white people in a direct way regarding our sincere worries about the problems in your community. I hope that this open letter can be part of a broader conversation in that regard.

When a person suffers from chronic pain they often find ways to compensate for it. Some people self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Others develop the mental discipline necessary to compartmentalize their physical suffering. Others cocoon themselves in a bubble of denial. Because I am your friend, I am going to be honest with you. White America is suffering from a type of cancer. It is hurting you; it is killing your children; it is damaging families; it hurls shrapnel in many directions, maiming and otherwise bringing an end to the lives of those people who are unfortunate enough to be in its blast radius. If you want the truth, this is it: toxic white masculinity, and the backward right-wing politics which nurture and protect it, are hurting millions of you every year.

I know that is hard to digest. But, because I care about you White America, I am obligated to tell you the truth, even at the risk of your discomfort.

For many of you, the very idea that there is such a thing as toxic white masculinity is both surprising and enraging. Denial and anger are a very normal reaction when an uncomfortable truth is called to account. But it is the truth. Toxic white masculinity is a fear of the world changing to the disadvantage of white men, and where what too many white men take as natural rights are actually going to be exposed as unfair advantages, advantages which were gifted by a lottery of genetics and fortune of birth, as opposed to earned merit.

Toxic white masculinity defaults to violence as a means of maintaining social and political control. It clings to guns as a symbol of “real” male identity. It fears women as equals; it lashes out at non-whites who are somehow “stealing” white men’s jobs and power. Toxic white masculinity sees “liberals,” “progressives,” “social justice,” and “feminism” as enemies -- out of a fear that “white masculinity” will somehow be made obsolete or extinct. The dream worlds and paranoid fantasies of angry white men are distractions that look to some type of Other as the preeminent threat to America’s safety and security. The reality is of course, very different.

In reality, right-wing domestic terrorists and mass shooters are the number one threat to America’s safety and security since September 11, 2001.

White men are approximately 31 percent of the United States population. And yet, white men are nearly 63 percent of those people who commit mass shootings. Such behavior, among any other group, would be considered pathological and a public health crisis.

Dylann Roof turned his toxic white racist masculinity on a black church in Charleston. And John Houser -- a white, right-wing, conservative, Christian fundamentalist, an anti-feminist, woman-hating Nazi sympathizer -- directed his rage towards a movie theater in Lafayette last month, where he killed three people and wounded eight others.

Because I am your friend White America, I will share another truth with you: While the mainstream news media will run away from subjects that make you uncomfortable, it is no coincidence that "Trainwreck," a movie written by a white Jewish feminist comedian, was the target of John Houser’s lethal actions.

It was not “mental illness” which made John Houser shoot those people in Lafayette, although such a claim is a common deflection that prevents a serious discussion of white masculinity and mass shootings. One can be “mentally ill” separate and apart from their violent impulses. No, it was extreme right-wing politics and toxic white masculinity that drove Houser to kill.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The killing and abuse of women by men in the United States -- the vast majority of it committed within the same “racial” group -- is so common that it is rarely deemed to be newsworthy by the mainstream news media. This is a disgusting national embarrassment.

Toxic white masculinity is a complex problem. And you cannot fix it unless you also confront how toxic white masculinity is nurtured and encouraged by your news media and political representatives. While I do not think that you are a victim of your news media and political parties, you have nonetheless been done a disservice by them.

Fox News is your mouthpiece: 92 percent of its prime time viewing audience is white. Fox is the most popular cable news network in the United States. Millions of people watch it on a daily basis. Fox News is part of a propaganda machine that consists of the Internet, radio, and social media. This has created an alternate reality for many White Americans where down is up and up is down, so to speak. Researchers have shown that the right-wing media actually makes its public less knowledgeable about empirical reality and current events than those people who do not watch or listen to it.

The white identity politics, grievance mongering, conspiracies, paranoid thinking, eliminationist rhetoric about liberals and progressives, hostility to women, rage against immigrants, anxiety about those who are not “Christian”, and mainstreaming of white supremacy and white racial resentment, are the fuel for toxic white masculinity. The right-wing media gins up and encourages such sentiments because it is dependent on them for viewers and ad revenue.

There Sure Were A Bunch Of White Nationalists At CPAC, Huh?

Far-Right Trolls, Propagandists, Conspiracy Theorists And More!

The so-called “alt-lite” or “New Right” is a loose coalition of far-right activists made up of conspiracy theorists, men’s rights dodos, and obnoxious Twitter celebrities who publicly claim to reject racism and fascism, but nevertheless have deep connections to the explicit racists and fascists of the alt-right.

As we’ve written about before, the alt-lite provides cover for, and acts as a conduit to, the alt-right.

The alt-lite had a big presence at CPAC. Here’s a bunch of them sitting together:

Image

Starting on the left we have Posobiec, the Seth Rich and Pizzagate conspiracy theorist. To his right is Breitbart News tech reporter Charlie Nash, according to multiple reporters who attended CPAC and identified him to HuffPost.

Next is Wintrich, the White House reporter for the deeply disreputable pro-Trump Gateway Pundit. Wintrich recently made headlines for attempting to give an “it’s OK to be white” speech at the University of Connecticut. (“It’s OK to be White” is a meme that grew out of the neo-Nazi fever swamps of the internet message board site, 4chan.)

To the right of Wintrich is Ali Akbar, a New Right activist and MAGA fan. And next to Ali, is Marcus Epstein, the white nationalist described above.

Also among the CPAC crowd (in the photo below) was former alt-right bigot, current alt-lite activist and pro-Trump troll Mike Cernovich, a men’s rights devotee and date rape apologist famous for pushing the Pizzagate conspiracy theory and saying loathsome things about all kinds of things.

Men Are Responsible for Mass Shootings

How toxic masculinity is killing us.

Image

We live in a culture that worships men with guns. You can probably think of many off the top of your head—John Wayne, Indiana Jones or James Bond come immediately to mind. They’re all men who get what they want. Women are all eager to have sex with them. They have the respect of their peers and their communities.

Most of the men who commit mass shootings were not those widely admired men. They were men who felt they were owed something, and that the world was not providing what they were owed.

In many of these mass shootings, the desire to kill seems to be driven by a catastrophic sense of male entitlement. In some cases, the perpetrators seemed to feel that if people did not give them precisely what they wanted, then those people did not deserve to live. The only just world, in their minds, was a world they were the center of.

...The problem at hand here isn’t that shooters are mentally disturbed. After all, 23 percent of U.S. women have a diagnosable mental illness (compared to only 16.8 percent of men), and they do not go around shooting people. The problem is that some men do not have the coping skills to deal with the fact that everyone does not think that they are special. Everyone does not want to employ them just because they happen to exist. Sometimes, even people who are very good at their jobs get fired, and that’s something we all need to deal with.

Likewise, every woman does not want to go out with them, or do what they say. We’re doing men no service in that regard when we start telling girls they can’t say no to boys who ask them to dance, or acting as though women who say they’ve had bad sexual experiences is a massive witch hunt designed to destroy them.

We need to teach that healing, not killing, is something powerful you can do as a man

Teach young men that not getting exactly what they want is fine. Everyone will not like them and admire them. That is not the end of the world. The world is not there to pander to them. They are there to help nurture the world and use those skills given to them to make it a better, safer, happier place for others.

I think, often, after these killings, of a scene from Beatriz at Dinner. Beatriz, an immigrant, played by Salma Hayek, is talking to a Trump-like developer played by John Lithgow. The developer is talking about how much he loves big game hunting and killing elephants. Beatriz says, “You think killing is hard, huh? You wait in the bushes. The animal might outrun you or charge you. It’s not easy to get your shot? Try healing something. That is hard. That requires patience. You can break something in two seconds, but it can take forever to fix it.”

Teach that as a sign of masculinity. Teach that healing, not killing, is something powerful you can do as a man. Teach your sons to be gentle as they go through life. Then I think we might begin to see the end of this problem.

Free Speech or Die?

The paradox of self-victimization by the alt-right

Image

In May 2017, a white nationalist decided to harass a teenage Muslim girl for wearing a hijab on a train in Portland, Oregon. His name was Jeremy Christian, and on social media he wrote about his desire to join “Donald Trump’s SS”. When three men—one of them an Army veteran—confronted Christian about his abuse, he pulled out a knife and slashed all three men in the throat, killing two of them. During his arraignment, he yelled out, “Free speech or die! Get out if you don’t like free speech! You call it terrorism! I call it patriotism!” Christian had decided that if people would not allow him to be a hateful bigot to a Muslim teenage girl, then he had the right to murder them in the name of free speech.

In addition to praising Donald Trump, whom he adores, as the next Hitler on Facebook, Christian also often used social media to espouse anti-Muslim beliefs and to call terrorists like Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh a true patriot. In March 2017, at an event in Portland called March for Free Speech that was organized by alt-right and conservative types, Christian showed up with an American flag wrapped around his shoulders like a cape, casting Nazi salutes while yelling, “Die, Muslims!”

Jeremy Christian was not the only white nationalist in 2017 who turned to violence in the name of free speech. In October 2017, hours after a speech at the University of Florida by white supremacist and self-proclaimed free speech advocate Richard Spencer, three men—Tyler Tenbrink and brothers William and Colton Fears—cast Nazi salutes, shouted “Heil Hitler,” and fired a gun at people protesting Spencer’s appearance. All three men were also present at the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that was in part organized by Spencer. It is worth noting that Spencer is credited with coining the term “alt-right” as an umbrella for all of the political ideologies that support white supremacy. He is also famous for shouting “Hail Trump” during a speech as Nazis gave him the Nazi salute.

In July 2017, Lane Davis, a 33-year-old Donald Trump supporter who was living with his parents, murdered his father in cold blood with a chef’s knife after his father questioned his belief in the right-wing conspiracy theory known as “Pizzagate.” Davis worked as an intern for Milo Yiannopoulos, a former Breitbart writer who, before being outed as a fan of pedophilia, was championed as the poster boy for the far-right’s free speech movement. Yiannopoulos, an ardent Trump supporter, famously tried and failed to stage a “Free Speech Week” at UC Berkeley in September 2017. It is not a coincidence that his intern murdered in the name of free speech. These white nationalist killers are murdering for political reasons, and they are being radicalized by right-wing leaders like Milo Yiannopoulos, Richard Spencer, and, ultimately, Donald Trump.

More than 150 tickets issued as fights break out at Michigan State before Richard Spencer speech

Simon D. Schuster and Susan Svrluga
Richard Spencer protests at Michigan State
Fights broke out between white supremacists and protesters Monday as anti-fascist activists, students and community members converged in and around Michigan State University to counter a speech by white nationalist Richard Spencer.

Hours before the speech began, police blocked access to the venue as protesters, including some masked antifascists, gathered outside and hundreds marched toward the venue shouting, "Nazis go home!"

As some of Spencer's supporters and people planning to attend the speech arrived on campus, masked protesters shouted obscenities at white supremacists and at police. A group of white nationalists marching down the road toward the speech venue - Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education - were blocked by protesters. Shouts turned to punches thrown at protesters, but the group wasforced by protesters away from the pavilion where Spencer later spoke.

More law enforcement officers arrived, lining both sides of the road leading into the venue, snapping cuffs on people and restoring calm.

But as others arrived to attend the speech, which was delayed past its planned 4:30 p.m. start time, a mob of protesters swarmed around them. A circle of law enforcement officers protected those wishing to go in, but two were pushed to the ground. Another man wanting to attend the event was pelted with sticks, dirt and cans by protesters.

Two were blocked from entering, despite the police escort. They bowed as they retreated, to jeers from the crowd.

The Detroit Free Press showed video of protesters screaming at police to a steady drumbeat, one kicking the bicycle of an officer, screaming, "F-ing Nazi cops!"

Capt. Doug Monette, a spokesman for the MSU police department, said two dozen arrests were made, ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. He said there were some weapons charges, as well as charges of hindering and obstructing, but that it was too soon to confirm individual people involved.

"What happened outside was really worrisome and heinous," Spencer said Monday evening. "That was an attempt to use violence to prevent people from attending a speech that was peaceful."

He said more than 150 tickets had been distributed, but many were not able to get through the chaos outside. "In terms of suppressing attendance, they really achieved that."

But he was able to deliver a speech, albeit curtailed, he said, and there was a good question-and-answer session. Samantha Turner, a Michigan State sophomore from Detroit who attended the protest with her parents, said, "I hope to send the message that we're just not going to do whatever they want and step all over us. I feel like showing a presence out here today lets them know that we do indeed care."

Omar Karim, an MSU student and member of the local antifascist group, Solidarity & Defense, said he's proud of the protesters. "These are my friends and family and co-workers, my brothers and sisters, people I get coffee with. These are people who I walk my dog with. This is my community. And my community in here in our home, representing our home, fighting against fascist ideology."

Spencer's National Policy Institute has sought to hold events on college campuses across the country. But several university presidents rejected such requests after he led a torchlight march of people shouting slurs at the University of Virginia in August. The next day, at a rally in Charlottesville, violent clashes with counterprotesters broke out, leaving one dead and dozens injured.

Days later, MSU officials denied Spencer's request to speak at the public university, citing concerns about safety. But in January, after settling a lawsuit brought by a supporter, the school agreed to allow an event on campus. "Michigan State is wholly dedicated to freedom of speech, not just as a public institution, but as an institution of higher education, " university officials explained in a public statement in January. "Here, ideas - not people - are meant to clash and to be evaluated based on their merits."

Spencer's speech comes at a time when tensions are raw over issues of race and politics and national identity, over freedom of speech and the cultural leanings of academia. In the days before Spencer spoke at the University of Florida, the governor declared a state of emergency. At MSU, Spencer arrived on a campus in turmoil over a sexual abuse scandal that forced the ouster of the university's longtime president and sparked numerous investigations and lawsuits.

On Monday morning, Spencer said it is "very, very sad," that they have to sue, or threaten to sue, universities simply for the right to engage in debate in a public forum. "The obstacles just keep rising - it's very difficult to continue," he said. "But we have to . . . as opposition mounts, we know that we're making more and more of an impact."

He said he knew antifascists would be there. "They present a major problem for police."

The MSU campus is on spring break this week, which is not a coincidence. The timing and the venue of the speech were chosen to minimize the risk of violence and disruption to campus, according to university officials.

The Pavilion for Agriculture is a small arena well south of the campus's developed core. Beyond it is farmland used primarily for research.

Still, protesters gathered in the bright but chilly air, a coalition of students, faculty and residents called Stop Spencer at MSU, to march on the pavilion.

Josh Lown, a protest organizer and graduate student at Michigan State, said midday Monday that they were hoping to avoid violence while disrupting Spencer's appearance as much as possible. He said they want to "make Richard Spencer and his motley crew know that they're not welcome here. We're a very loving and diverse community, and we don't want this speech to turn into normalcy."

The group wrote on social media that they must "defend against racist and fascist attacks on every campus and in every community" and "oppose the fascists, the racists, and the university administration, the cops and ICE and the government who are complicit in these attacks and the enemies of our communities."

They had posted an image on social media playing off the university's "Spartans will. . ." campaign, showing a still from a video of a man punching Spencer, with a Spartan helmet imposed on the image.

Well north of the pavilion, a broad coalition of organizations including the city of East Lansing, the undergraduate and graduate student governments, MSU's College Democrats, College Republicans, the local chapter of Black Lives Matter, and an interfaith clergy group are collaborating on a full day of activities in an effort to ignore Spencer.

Ashley Fuente, president of the Council of Graduate Students, will first spend two hours with about 30 volunteers, packing food for Meals on Wheels. "I think the way the community has come together has been absolutely incredible," Fuente said of the Spartan Day of Love & Solidarity.

It was important to unite both the university and the larger community for this, said Aaron Stephens, an MSU senior who is a member of the East Lansing City Council. He said that having all the major political groups on campus - Democrats, Republicans and libertarians - join together signals that "If you believe in white supremacy, you don't disagree with me politically, you disagree with me morally. Even if we disagree on issues, we agree everyone is equal and we deserve to be treated as such."

The student government is also sponsoring a free screening of "Black Panther" later in the evening, and bought out a 270-seat theater to accommodate the attendees.

At the All Saints Episcopal Church north of campus, the Rev. Kit Carson, the church's rector, admitted she's "a little bit overwhelmed" by the magnitude of the response to the celebration of diversity they plan to host Monday afternoon: More than 1,000 people RSVP'd online for the fair.

"This is an opportunity to bring the community together, reaffirm our shared values of tolerance, love and diversity and really try to ignore what's going on at the pavilion as much as we can," Carson said.

"Absolutely people need to say hate is bad and probably need to say it to his face. That's not our role here today," Carson said. "The only thing that concerns me about the antifascists and the counterprotesters is that sometimes that devolves into hate, too, when the two groups get face-to-face. When that happens, then basically you've bought into Spencer's narrative."

Spokesmen for the university deferred questions to police and to the National Policy Institute, and sent a link to university statements from January.

On Friday, MSU's interim president, John Engler, addressed the issue in an email to the community: "Nobody affiliated with Michigan State invited this small, hateful group, and I doubt they'll find support. The remarkable accomplishments of our diverse community of scholars expose the fraudulence of their racist rhetoric every day.

"But they come here hoping to gain energy by provoking reaction to their taunts," Engler continued. "If we take the bait - if we return their hate - it only supports the preposterous claims to victimhood that sustain their ideology. They court headlines. They crave confrontation, because without it, their message of hate falls on deaf ears." He called on people to signal their opposition by ignoring the event and avoiding the area.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Insurrection as Resurrection

Image

Weaving spiders are busy indeed. The alphabet agencies, be they spies or corporate mouthpieces or Google itself, tell us who to trust and who to scoff at, and we let them. We haven’t had to do real research since these little portals arrived in our pockets. Taking blue pills was easier than looking for ourselves. After generations of learning to look to Big Daddy for answers, it was child’s play to pull the wool over our eyes. Then the tools of research became the means of censorship. The big bang of available data that happened when the Internet went live is slowing down, and attempts are being made to reverse its flow so that it can be contained and controlled for good. Leaks continue. We can hope that stubborn defenders of truth will continue to burn holes in the dragnet and allow the flow of uncollared information.

Then Congress rolled back progressive laws but told us that only hurt “snowflakes.” We figured hate crimes and transphobia and racism were overblown. We didn’t think the Klan was even really a thing. It seemed like a joke or anachronism. How wrong we were, and how lucky we were to have such delusions as others watched their backs for lifetimes. Local governments are busy shadowboxing with political theater for the benefit of their base. Politicians treat bathroom laws and other rollbacks of LGBTQ rights as a priority to impress the evangelical voters. Nevermind what those same creeps get up to in bathrooms and hotels off the clock.

Meanwhile, real issues like infrastructure, education, safety and economic security are passed to the next official to deal with, if at all. The hollow men in expensive suits wrap themselves in the flag, drop crocodile tears paired with cherry-picked Bible fragments, and utterly ignore all requests to join the rest of the world in the 21st century. As long as they keep getting paid for their votes and avoid each other’s deep-dirt blackmail schemes, the circus goes on as it always has, and we get fed to the lions when we demand bread.

Then they began to shut the gates. In a brief but ominous symbol, the Statue of Liberty was unlit for a time. Only a few noticed enough to ask why, but it had a dark resonance. Fear had trumped love, and our nation of immigrants started turning people away as if that would affect a trend toward homegrown, often white terrorism. After decades of war, thousands have nowhere to go, and years of conditioning have made us associate the wrong countries with terrorism and job stealing. Our “job creators” are the ones moving all the work offshore to their tax havens and secret banks. Our “protectors” are the ones starting fires all over the world.

However we may live as individuals, America knows in our gut that we have become everything we once opposed. But no one can handle that, and many can’t even recognize it, so the masquerade goes on. A war on terror never ends, it just ramps up and creates an endless cycle of blood for money. See also the wars on drugs, crime, poverty, and so on. Like cancer, there’s more money in research and feel-good branding than a cure. The institutions of these troubled times work to entrench and preserve themselves rather than solving the problems that were their reason for existing.

Meanwhile, the growing police state has started stopping people on planes and stranding them in airports. They started making lists of “bad” nationalities. Men in brown with dogs and guns are at the borders asking for papers. We know where that leads. The mask is slipping, and the face is all too familiar. How long now? Do we need to endure this again? What lesson have we ignored that demands a retread of humanity’s most famous dark night of the soul?
