An Israeli journalist for the daily Haaretz newspaper has become the latest commentator to question her country's narrative on the alleged knife attacks carried out by Palestinian youths, who are often shot dead as a response.

Middle East Eye has previously reported on Israel's shoot-to-kill policy and interviewed locals who witnessed Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces. The locals offer a very different account from the Israeli army statements, asserting that these alleged knife stabbers actually did not possess a knife or pose any threat to the soldiers.

In an article entitled "Does the Israeli army plant knives on Palestinians?", Amira Hass, Haaretz's correspondent for the occupied Palestinian territories, criticised the way suspected knife attackers are reportedly shot dead immediately when they could have been apprehended instead.

"A former Japanese policeman now visiting Israel said, 'I don’t understand. In our country, if someone stabs a policeman, we grab him by the hand and arrest him. We don’t kill him. Why is it different in Israel?" she wrote.

"How should we respond? By saying that in our country, soldiers and policemen are instructed to kill a Palestinian holding a knife two meters from them, or a knife in his bag, or something that is assumed to be a knife in his pocket?" she added.

Hass also criticised the Israeli media for always describing "the site of an incident as military and Israeli," when it is Palestinian, where "tens of thousands of people whose homes and childhoods are there are made to vanish".

She cited one incident when a female knife attacker was shot in the chest, asking "couldn’t the policewoman make do with wounding and arresting the girl?"

Hass also cited incidents where Israeli soldiers, according to witnesses, have shot at Palestinians who apparently posed no threat.

In another incident Hass cited, Palestinian witnesses believed that Israeli soldiers and policemen were planting knives to justify the shooting of Palestinians.

"Israelis find it hard to believe that our soldiers and commanders could lie, until it’s proven otherwise by security cameras or still pictures of which the soldiers weren’t aware," she wrote.

Eyewitness accounts, both from the local population and international groups, of how Israeli soldiers plant knives next to the dead Palestinians they have shot are rarely mentioned in the Israeli or most Western media outlets.

On 28 October, volunteers from the International Solidarity Movement's branch based in Hebron witnessed Israeli soldiers shoot Islam Ibeidu near a checkpoint by the Kiryat Arba settlement.

"I saw everything," the witness tweeted. "I saw soldiers loading the guns. He [Ibeidu] had his arms up and was shaking, he was unarmed and they just shot him."

The next day, another man was shot dead by Israeli forces after they claimed he tried to stab them.

An eyewitness told local news agency Maan that 23-year-old Mahdi Mohammad Ramadan al-Muhtasib was unarmed when he was killed.

“Then the Israeli soldier approached him and shot him in the head and dropped a knife near his body,” the unnamed witness stated.

Just after 9:30 am ET also on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, Toronto police responded to multiple 911 calls from an office building on Yonge Street near York Mills Ave.

One man, apparently Asian, (shown here) was placed in custody after Toronto police say at least four people were stabbed (by scissors) at the building in the northern part of the city.

Police say the attack happened on the fifth floor of an office complex at 4110 Yonge St., near York Mills Avenue.

CBC News has confirmed that four people were taken to hospital with stab wounds.

A man and a woman in their 30s are among the people who were stabbed. The two suffered multiple, serious stab wounds, according to police, and are in critical condition in hospital. Two other males whose ages are not known were transported with serious wounds to a trauma centre.

On November 4, 2015, 18-year-old student Faisal Mohammad[1] stabbed and injured four people with a hunting knife on the campus of the University of California, Merced in Merced, California. He was then shot dead by university police. Mohammad's history was put under investigation by federal authorities due to questions raised about possible lone wolf terrorism.[2][3]

Update: Rohinie Bisesar was arrested and charged with attempted murder Tuesday afternoon

A 40-year-old Toronto woman is wanted for attempted murder for allegedly stabbing a stranger in a “vital organ” at a drugstore in the city’s financial district.

At 2:55 p.m. Friday, a well-dressed woman armed with a knife entered the Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto’s underground PATH system at 66 Wellington St. W., inside the TD Bank Tower. She walked up to the victim and stabbed her “in a vital organ,” Const. David Hopkinson said. He would not specify which organ was punctured.

Police have not yet found any connection between the suspect and the victim, he said.

“It is strange,” he said. “We believe it to be a completely unprovoked attack.”

The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. She remains in grave condition, Hopkinson said Monday afternoon, and police have not yet been able to interview her.

“I don’t believe anyone has spoken to her,” he said. “If we catch her, we might be able to establish that there’s something going on in the background, here, that we don’t know about. But we’ve not found any link.”

The suspect was able to walk away from the scene after the attack, police said.

Police released a photo of the suspect taken from surveillance video Saturday. The suspect was wearing a lavender dress shirt and a black blazer and matching skirt at the time of the attack. She was carrying what appears to be a red shopping bag. On Monday morning, police announced that the suspect had been identified as Rohinie Bisesar.

She is a financial advisor and investor according to her LinkedIn profile. She received her MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University in 2007. According to her profile, she also received a Bachelor of Administrative Studies degree in general management from York, a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology from the University of Toronto, a certificate in mining and received a certification from the Canadian Securities Institute. She did consulting work between September 2012 and November 2014, and has been “opportunity seeking” since then.

Bisesar regularly visits shops and plazas in the financial district, and is well-known in the area, police said. If anyone sees the suspect, they are asked to call 9-1-1. Do not approach her, police said. Although she has no criminal history, she is considered “violent and dangerous.”

In four recommendations posted to her LinkedIn page between 2010 and 2012, Bisesar is described as intelligent, determined, dedicated, enthusiastic and professional.

Georges Monette, an associate professor of mathematics and statistics at York University, worked with Bisesar when she was a member of the department’s technical and computing support team from May 1999 to July 2001.

“She was superb both for the outstanding quality of her work and for her warmth and interpersonal skills,” he wrote on Oct. 24, 2010. “She had the intelligence, creativity and ability to work collaboratively that allowed (her) to find excellent solutions to just about any problem researchers and faculty members would present her with.”

She also received a recommendation from the Chief of Staff in the dean’s office at the Schulich School of Business. Sean Siddik “advised” Bisesar during her time at York University, according to a post he published Sept. 19, 2011.

“I had the opportunity to work closely with Rohinie over the years, during her involvement with the Women In Leadership organization at the Schulich School of Business as well as Women in Capital Markets,” he wrote. “Rohinie was always organized, professional, hard working, and courteous. She demonstrated sound judgment, as well as very strong leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Rohinie was a pleasure to work with, and I wish her all the best on her future endeavours!”

The National Post was unable to contact Monette Monday afternoon. When Siddik was reached by telephone at his Toronto office, he declined to comment on Bisesar. He directed any queries to the school’s media relations team.

Police are still searching for the suspect.

A BRITON was stabbed to death by another tourist who went wild on hallucinogenic drugs in the Amazon jungle, according to reports.

Unais Gomes, 26, was stabbed by Canadian Joshua Stevens, 29, after they both drank mind-bending ayahuasca in a tribal ceremony in Peru.

Stevens is said to have grabbed a knife after psychedelic visions made him think his wife was being unfaithful with his British friend, reports in Peru claim.

However other reports suggested it was Gomes who first picked up the knife during a "bad trip" and Stevens killed him in self-defence.

The two men were part of a group who paid to drink the notorious psychotropic plant brew at a spiritual retreat near the jungle city of Iquitos.

Police chief Normando Marques said: "It might be folkloric, spiritual or whatever else, but that doesn't mean it isn't a drug that dramatically alters your state of mind."

Witnesses reportedly saw Gomes lunge at the Canadian with a knife from the kitchen of the alternative health centre Phoenix Ayahuasca.

Stevens ended up killing the Briton with the same knife, stabbing him in the chest and stomach, police sources said.

The Canadian citizen was being held in police custody last night.

Ayahuasca, an Amazonian vine which is boiled with leaves containing natural hallucinogen dimethyltryptamine, gives users a psychedelic experience although it is not normally associated with violence.

TV explorer Bruce Parry drank the brew, also known as yage, as part of a shamanic ritual in an Amazonian village in his BBC series The Tribe.

He was filmed vomiting repeatedly - part of the ritual called the purge - and battling with vivid aural and visual hallucinations over several hours.

Indigenous peoples believe it has healing qualities and transports users on a spiritual awakening.

Recent years have seen a boom in ayahuasca tourism with visitors from around the world seeking out the drug for its reputed benefits to ease depression and other mental troubles.

Phoenix Ayahuasca has not commented on the death. Its Facebook page describes it as a safe place to "experience plant medicines and explore the true nature of the self."

Last year Brit backpacker Henry Miller, 19, from Bristol, died from an apparent allergic reaction after taking yage in Colombia. His body was later found dumped by the side of a road.

In 2012, an 18-year-old American died at an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon. The shaman leading the ceremony buried his body in an attempt to cover up the death.
