Love the notion of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine joining The Motherfucking EU. I know, I laugh now, but the decades to come will prove me wrong, or something. Still, I picture a lot of flaming roadblocks on Federal highways if it came time to re-unify with Old England. None of us crackers up here love our heritage that much.

We're moving forward in time too slowly! I wish we could jump ahead say 50 years or so. You know, in order to avoid the approaching messy part of this movie.

ON RIGHT-WING POLITICAL VIOLENCE

Yesterday, I wrote the following:

[T]he main worry I have is that the gap between disorganized political violence and organized political violence is minuscule, and is already being jumped over.

Today brings word that five people protesting police violence in Minneapolis were shot by three white supremacists in front of a police station. Some reports have the cops refusing to render aid to the wounded and macing the protestors, which is entirely believable. Thankfully, the specific Nazi scum that opened fire on the crowd are poor shots and those targeted were just wounded and not killed. However, this is not an anomaly but is instead a reflection of an ongoing march of right-wing political violence.

A man who believes myths about whites facing genocide marches into a church and murders nine people for nothing other than being Black. Another Nazi attempts to bomb the Martin Luther King Day parade in Spokane. A leading Presidential candidate suggests that a protester who was assaulted at a rally of his deserved the attack he faced and is pro-torture for interrogations and for the hell of it. And these are just three examples. In another hour, I could pull up another dozen.

I cannot state this any clearer: there is a rising fascist tide in the US, and if the Left is unable to form up and try and stem that tide, nothing will be able to stop it long-term from taking over. Political backlash from the fever swamps of the right kept the Department of Homeland Security from exercising any kind of scrutiny on the dangers of right wing extremism. Without organizing a broad political front to arrest the growth in support these folks have gotten in the past few years, they will eventually take power, and God help us when they do.

Malcolm Harris was absolutely right in this piece:

Anti-fascists like Jason Hammond don’t blind themselves to history or bind their hands with liberal tolerance. They know that now, as before, the swastika belongs under a hammer. As fascist elements organize, the violence required to confront and marginalize them only increases. As the antifa group One People’s Project puts it, “Hate has consequences.” Better to fight now.

The only way to defeat these people is to be ready for a fight. The longer we wait and equivocate and hope for these scum to play by the rules, the more powerful the fascist right will become. Best to get on with it already

OLYMPIA SOLIDARITY WITH MINNEAPOLIS

November 30, 2015
Submitted to It’s Going Down

On Sunday November 29th a handful of people gathered outside the Olympia Police department with signs and banners to show support for people in Minneapolis fighting against the police and facing attacks from white supremacists.

Here is a statement:

We are standing in solidarity with rebels in Minneapolis who have been fighting a fierce struggle against the police and white supremacy. Since the police murder of Jamar Clarke they have occupied the area around the 4th precinct demanding the release of the video of Jamar’s murder. Conflicts with the police have escalated into an uprising that has inspired the country.

As is often the case, white supremacists have shown their ugly faces in Minneapolis to support the police. On Monday night the 23rd three white supremacists entered the encampment at the 4th precinct and shot 5 people. Fortunately no one was killed but the shooting highlights the extreme danger posed by far-right groups who seek to defend the police and white power.

Here in Olympia we have also seen a rise in white supremacist action. Last May, Olympia police officer Ryan Donald shot two young black men Andre and Bryson Chaplin. In response, Black Lives Matter and other groups went to the street to denounce the shooting. This triggered local white supremacist and pro-police groups such as the Black Top Demon crew, the right-wing militia South Sound Citizens Defense League and even blatant neo-nazis, the Hammerskins. Fortunately many of those individuals were chased and beaten out of town on May 30th. However, the threat continues here in the Pacific Northwest as much as it does across the country. For this reason it remains ever more important to express and act in solidarity with those comrades near and far, known and unknown, who continue to fight against the police and the tyranny that is white power. We want those in Minneapolis to know that they are not alone in their struggle and we will keep fighting.

Evidence Reveals Minneapolis Protest Shooting Suspect as Racist Scaredy Cat

Much of the evidence suggests that the shooting was racially motivated. In a video from earlier in the week, a man who was questioned and released regarding the incident can be seen brandishing a gun, saying “stay white,” and referring to black people as “dindus” while driving to the scene of ongoing protests. The complaint against Scarsella alleges that he is the second masked man in that video—a claim that Gawker and others also floated after the shooting.

The alleged shooters talked a big game before going out on the evening of the 23rd, according to the complaint against Scarsella. “I know how to make big news or get them to disperse,” Nathan Gustavsson, above left, allegedly texted his fellow defendant Scarsella. “I have an idea to really stir shit up.”

However, it seems just as likely that whoever pulled the trigger did so out of racist fear at being confronted by a real-live black person, not some sinister plot. After the shooting, Scarsella allegedly confessed to an officer with the Mankato, Minn., police department with whom he was friendly, who urged him to turn himself in to Minneapolis cops. On the phone, that officer said, Scarsella was “very frightened.” The Mankato officer also told Minneapolis police that Scarsella was a “pro Constitution” “sovereign citizen” who had negative opinions about African-Americans.

NO BADJACKETING: THE STATE WANTS TO KILL US; LET’S NOT COOPERATE

We prepared this short piece after several comrades were badjacketed in public and with pictures on social media at the 4th Precinct Shutdown. We believe those individual cases have been dealt with, and don’t wish to cause unnecessary division by complaining, or publicly calling any group or individual out. Instead, this is intended to provoke reflection, and conversation, amongst all of us, as to how to deal with the suspicions we may have of people we don’t know in our growing movements, without creating the sorts of divisions among ourselves that does the work of the State and the police for them. We intend to act in solidarity with those who know how to act in solidarity.

We ask that all organizations and groups working for a better world in which we have killed White Supremacy, Capitalism, and all other forms of oppression, consider that (1) none of us represent the mandate of all the people, (2) that we may have instead genuine and important strategic and tactical differences between ourselves about the best ways to accomplish that world, (3) that we will not win by pretending these differences do not exist, or dictating against difference, but instead by engaging on these differences in the most democratic and least hierarchical ways possible.

The emergence of fascism has always depended upon democracy’s failure. The growing proto-fascist, white-supremacist movement in the Republican Party is preying upon non-rich white people who are literally dying of despair, turning to drugs and suicide to deal with a reality they can’t bear, and a society they believe doesn’t care for them. Over the past 15 years, the death rate for white men has actually increased — an unprecedented rise in modern times that’s comparable to the emergence of the AIDS epidemic. White people are right that they are under attack — they’re just pointing to the wrong culprits. For the wealthy elite who fund the political operatives and media companies that tell white people who to blame for their plight, the race war is a very useful substitute for the class war.

What’s new in this moment is the Republican establishment’s losing control of the grassroots for the first time in the post–civil rights era. Instead of the corporate Republicans winning the white vote with coded racist language, the grassroots outsiders are competing with one another to be more and more openly racist. Trump and Ben Carson are far-right populists rushing to turn non-rich white people’s fear and despair into ever-greater inequality by blaming others for their situation. The villainization of Mexicans, black people, and Muslims that’s happened over the course of this election season isn’t new, but the nakedness of the hatred is fueled by white panic about their diminishing prospects in the face of growing economic and political inequality.

White rage at economic inequality and fear of a corrupt political establishment is not the only thing driving the backlash. The movement for black lives is making every American confront how we treat black people and decide if black lives matter to them. Movements create change by forcing people to pick a side: Opponents and supporters are both polarized, and each escalates in their tactics and commitment. In this moment of polarization, those who politically, economically, or emotionally depend upon the domination of black people are forced to cling ever harder to their hatred.

U.S. HARD RIGHT BEING BOLSTERED BY THE MAINSTREAM

By Doug Gilbert, on December 23, 2015

On Monday, November 23, 2015, a group of Black Lives Matter protesters in Minneapolis, Minnesota were shot at—leaving five wounded. Shortly afterward, the police made four arrests, and it became clear that those allegedly involved in the shooting were influenced by the Hard Right Patriot movement. The day before the shooting, in a video that went viral on social media, two of those who were later arrested recorded themselves making racist comments and flashing a gun while driving to the #4thPrecinctShutdown, an Occupy-like encampment that had sprung up in the wake of the police shooting death of Jamar Clark.

This most recent shooting fits into an escalating pattern of confrontation between social movements, such as Black Lives Matter, and the Right, both in terms of terror attacks and in mainstream discourse. This reality played out in Olympia, Washington in September, when neo-Nazi skinheads and White nationalists took to the streets (but were quickly driven from them) in support of the police, who faced protests after officers shot and wounded two young men accused of shoplifting alcohol. Harkening back to their heyday of the 1990s, the Racist Right is brazenly gathering in public.

Only four days after the shooting in Minneapolis, a Hard Right activist opened fire inside a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing three and injuring nine. Planned Parenthood, which provides free and reduced-cost medical care to poor and working people (including abortions), has already faced a series of cuts in Colorado and other states, as well as media attacks from the anti-abortion movement and the Republican establishment. The recent video from The Center for Medical Progress, which generated much of this aggression, features doctored videos of Planned Parenthood staff discussing the donation of fetal tissue for purposes of medical research. The videos falsely characterize this as the “illegal sale of baby parts,” and many believe they helped set in motion a string of arsons, protests, and attacks against clinics across the U.S. What’s more, the alleged gunman, Robert Lewis Dear, after surrendering to police, is reported to have stated “No more baby parts,” in apparent reference to the manipulated videos.

The recent shooters may be different in terms of motivations and targets, but they may also be joined by radicalization via internet as well as a social movement. It could be said that the keyboard is the new gun show.

The recent shooters may be different in terms of motivations and targets, but they may also be joined by radicalization via internet as well as a social movement. It could be said that the keyboard is the new gun show. For instance, the shooters in Minneapolis were part of —and met through—the infamous internet message board website 4chan, which they also used to organize their armed “disruption” of the BLM encampment. Launched in 2003, 4chan is an internet image sharing and message board website, that has helped to launch key players on both the Left and Right, including the “hacktivist” group Anonymous. Likewise, Robert Dear may have been driven to act by the right-wing campaign this summer that went viral due to a YouTube video, although it is unknown if he actually watched the video itself. It is important to note, as Naomi Braine pointed out in her Public Eye article “Terror Network or Lone Wolf,” those taking part in these “lone wolf” actions, like Dylann Roof in Charleston, are tied to and influenced by larger movements and aboveground groups, although they may only interact with them from afar.

Image
Supporters at a Donald Trump rally in Birmingham, AL,
kick and punch a Black Lives Matter protester to the ground.

But while the internet continues to be a fertile recruiting ground, segments of the Hard Right are also acting in a context where their discourse continues to push into mainstream and is magnified around Donald Trump’s campaign trail. From making heinous comments about Latinos and immigrants, telling protesters to “go back to Africa,” retweeting neo-Nazi sound-bytes, declaring that all Muslims should be barred from the U.S., to proclaiming that Black Lives Matter demonstrators should have been “roughed up,” Trump has encouraged a new generation of White nationalists—much like David Duke did in the late 1980s. It is no surprise, then, that the Minneapolis shooters were reported to have fled the scene while yelling, “Donald Trump 2016” and “Race War!” Like the shooting in Minnesota, other collective acts of violence across the U.S.— from beatings in the street to confrontations at Trump rallies—have all been given steam by “The Donald’s” campaign. This is not to mention the shot in the arm White nationalists have received thanks to Traditionalist Worker Party leader Matthew Heimbach getting invited to do media interviews on White working-class voter dissatisfaction. Indeed, at the most recent Stormfront—a popular White nationalist message board website—convention, undercover anti-racists reported lots of pro-Trump paraphernalia.

Trump is quick to distance himself from violence, while at the same time feeding off its promotion. Likewise, anti-abortion Republicans were largely silent on the Colorado slayings. In so doing, these leaders seek to obscure the connections between this “lone wolf” and the broader right-wing movement.

This is true in the Right’s backlash against the movement for Black lives and advances in LGBTQ rights, as well as in the attacks, both in legislatures and on the ground, against Planned Parenthood. This reality continues to stack up the corpses of everyday people, gives support to the ramping up of government repression, and fosters and deepens systems of oppression and exploitation.

What is at Stake in North Minneapolis and #Justice4Jamar

This article is written by member, db, a new school teacher and resident in North Minneapolis. The lessons and realities here come from conversations with hundreds of residents, students, neighbors, and protesters. As you’ll see the situation in N Mpls shares much in common with a city near you.

The horrific execution of an unarmed, handcuffed, on the ground black man in front of dozens of witnesses has led to an outburst of struggle whose fire is not spent and whose meaning is still being defined. In this article, I will argue that what is at stake in this struggle is the future of North Minneapolis, which, in miniature, is a question of the future of our cities and of working class people across the country.

Without going too deeply into one man’s life, we can see the overlapping forces of a city, state, and nation who choose to disinvest in his neighborhood, a school system that failed to provide him with sufficient opportunities or political consciousness, a prison system that would be happy to wastefully consume much of his life, and a status quo that wishes to see all people like him literally gone from the city, and perhaps the world. By the hand of a gun. By sentence to a prison cell, and the shift from freedom to actual existing slavery. By economic disinvestment and displacement, including fleeing the real and imagined school failures undermined by those seeking to make money off poor areas cleared of poor people.

FEMINISTING JAMZ: TAINA ASILI’S “FREEDOM” CHALLENGES MASS INCARCERATION

Taína Asili is a Puerto Rican vocalist and longtime activist for prisoner justice and against mass incarceration. In her latest music video, she worked with Detroit-based poet Michael Reyes to make a tribute to the movement for black lives, with a shout out to the historical roots of mass incarceration and anti-black racism.

Taina Asili looking fiercely at the camera. The video follows a young Black Lives Matter protestor running from the police, interspersed with shots of the same actress dressed as an enslaved person running between stops on the Underground Railroad. It’s a powerful message from two artists with a history of freedom fighting: mass incarceration has replaced the slave trade as a means of exploiting and oppressing Black and Brown people. The battle has changed slightly, but our enemy remains the same.

Poet Claudia Rankine on the violent deaths of black men

Watch “Stop and Frisk,” a video by Claudia Rankine and her husband John Lucas based on her poem by the same name.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN5aYIrc2J8

She and Lucas collaborate on what she calls “situation videos”. She writes the poetry; her husband makes a short film to accompany the text. One, called “Stop-and-Frisk,” shows two African American boys (who happen to be students at Pomona) as they shop for clothing. Police sirens can be heard in the background as Rankine reads:

I knew whatever was in front of me was happening and then the police vehicle came to a screeching halt in front of me like they were setting up a blockade. Everywhere were flashes, a siren sounding and a stretched-out roar. Get on the ground. Get on the ground now. Then I just knew.

And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description.

Rankine says the piece was initially a response to police policies in New York City, but she quickly realized that this “policing of the black body” was something that was happening all across the country. This video is a meditation on the fact that “the outdoor space is dangerous for the black male body to move about in,” says Rankine.

(That's why we going to be)
Burning and a-looting tonight
(Say we going to burn and loot)
Burning and a-looting tonight
(One more thing)
Burning all pollution tonight
(Oh, yeah, yeah)
Burning all illusion tonight

Weeping and a-wailing tonight
(Who can stop the tears?)
Weeping and a-wailing tonight
(We've been suffering these long, long-a years!)
Weeping and a-wailing tonight

Weeping and a-wailing tonight

The graphic showing the U.S. Split up is hilarious. Utah and Arizona merge with Cali? OMG lol. Obviously this was a joke or the Russian "professor is a complete dipshit. Utah is a different world unto itself, you can only know that by spending time there. 'Zona has a bit too much testosterone for the Cali extreme lefties. What a hot mess that would be.

PRO-POLICE RALLY IN SF AND ANTI-BLACK RACISM

February 21, 2016

Submitted to It’s Going Down

ImageOn February 20th, 2016 at 10:30 am a few hundred demonstrators gathered at Justin Herman Plaza to denounce the conviction of Peter Liang an Asian American NYPD officer who shot and killed unarmed black man Akai Gurley. Liang was found guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct. The protesters, mostly Asian Americans, demanded justice for Peter Liang, claiming he was scapegoated by the criminal justice system on the anti-police sentiment that has been sweeping the US since the murder of Alex Nieto, Michael Brown, Jr., Eric Garner and hundreds more.

The “justice” these protesters seek is one where a police officer walks away free from another murder of an unarmed black man. The protest was successfully disrupted by a small group of anarchist people of color. The disruption was accomplished by hijacking the front of the march with a banner of our own that read “Anti-racist, Anti-Police,” and chanting anti-police slogans. The march was stopped and delayed several times by low intensity conflicts between protesters, counter-protesters, and police, despite the pleads of the organizers.

We report on these disruptions not to tout our own accolades but to illustrate a political point and draw a line in the sand, and stand in solidarity with the struggle for black liberation, and against, uncompromisingly, the racist police state and the system of capital they defend.

The tens of thousands in over 20 cities that took the streets in support of Liang, shows just how much anti-black racism there is on the one hand, and on the other, the impotency of liberal groups like “Asians for Black Lives” for showing absolutely zero resistance to such blatant anti-black racism by some in the Asian American community.

We agree with Afro-Pessimist writer Frank Wilderson when he explains that at the point that non-black people of color “moving against the system,” get over, so to speak, they collect the crumbs falling from the racial hierarchy and “the anti-blackness that sustains them will rear its ugly head.” We call on particularly non-black people of color who are anti-racist and anti-authoritarian to seek nothing less than full liberation and stand in solidarity with the struggle for black liberation, by disrupting and stopping any further demonstrations of white supremacy, anti-blackness, and pro-police sentiment in their local area.
