Berlin: truck crashes into Christmas market

One person killed after vehicle runs into market, with local media unsure whether it was accident or attack

One person has died after a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin, German police have said.

Local media reports suggested the vehicle ran into the market outside the landmark Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church on Monday evening. They said police at the scene had said initial indications pointed to an attack.

A photograph posted by the Morgenpost showed damaged tables and stalls, while footage posted online by the same outlet showed a truck on the scene and police officers investigating. The Berliner Zeitung said police also believed there to be multiple injuries.

Both newspapers reported it wasn’t not immediately clear whether the incident was an accident or some kind of an attack on the market.

Breitscheidplatz, where the market was set up, is one of Berlin’s busiest shopping areas.

According to Berliner Zeitung, the lorry veered off Budapester Strasse across the pavement and stopped just before the Christmas tree on the square. The street has been cordoned off and a meeting point for relatives has been set up. The Christmas market has been cleared and a police spokesman said there are concerns the crash may have caused a gas leak.

Latest I've seen is several dead, 50 injured and the police saying it is an attack.

Zürich is in Switzerland if this is what you're thinking of:

Zurich shooting: Three people injured at Islamic centre

Three men were "badly injured" after gunman opened fire on people praying at an Islamic Centre in Zurich police said.

The victims, aged 30, 35 and 56 were hit at around 5:30pm local time.

An official said officers were swarming to the scene in pursuit of the gunman who remains at large. He was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Attacks by armed gunmen are rare in Switzerland.

the police are currently going on the assumption that it was intentional

nine dead, many injured, plus a dead man in passenger seat

driver tried to flee, was caught

this is at the very centre of west berlin

berliner zeitung's live newsfeed here in german:

http://www.berliner-zeitung.de/berlin/b ... --25341200

mayor michael müller is now there, say the situatiion is "dramatic" but "under control"

public advised to stay at home

still not entirely clear if the man arrested is the driver; some say the driver was shot too. confused reports.#

Time of the incident is given here, to the minute: 20:14

Just off the phone about this, my people are fine.

It really sucks.

This is right across from Bahnhof Zoo, for those who don't know, once the center of West Berlin and very busy place.

I thought it was interesting how the lorry attack happened so soon after the Russian ambassador murder that it kind of took the wind out of the ambassador assassination story, as far as the news cycle goes.

Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

This remind you of anyone on the board?

Look, radical wackos: This is Berlin. We are Berlin. We ride the S-Bahn in rush hour. We grumble when you're friendly to us. Our taxi drivers are more dangerous than any converts. We bitch at the supermarket. We believe that Union will rise and Hertha is gonna make it to the Champions League. We eat kebabs and raw fish - at a price that guarantees that there is neither fish nor meat in it. Schultheiss is a beer here. And Sternburg! And we idolize our children, even if they're lactose-intolerant. Whatever that is. We have nine months of winter and go straight to work from parties. Some of us are Turks. Or Russians. Or Americans. Pakistanis, yes! Or even Baden-Württemberger. Afraid of you?! Dream on, pussies?! Up yours!
