Violence begets violence, always has and always will.

It's a shame that any young person would act this way towards another young man who's disabled, but the weakest always make the easiest prey. Weak, undeveloped minds find weaker minds to torment and usually have like-minded buddies bolstering their bullying. The poorest of all performance art for the wickedest of purposes: self-gratification of ego, with audience appreciation, at the expense of causing another's (everlasting?) pain.

A very great tragedy, indeed. Very sad.

So you'd feel comfortable with an internet-wide authority that gets to decide which media are allowed to persist and which don't?

(Reminds me of the mention elsewhere on this board of selective scrubbings from web archive sites.)

California gunman kills three 'in race attack' in Fresno

Three white men were killed and another wounded when a black gunman opened fire in Fresno, California, in a suspected race attack, police have said.

Kori Ali Muhammad shot 16 rounds in 90 seconds in the shooting spree on Tuesday, said Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

He shouted "God is greatest" in Arabic when arrested but this was a hate crime not terrorism, Mr Dyer believed.

Mr Muhammad, 39, was also wanted for the murder of a security guard outside a motel in the city last week.

He now faces four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

A Muslim leader in the city said Mr Muhammad did not represent Islam.

All four victims were white men, and one of them was shot sitting in a car. Media in the city named him as Zackary Randalls, a 34-year-old father of two who was on his first day in his new job as a utility worker.

The suspect had indicated on social media that he hated white people and expressed anti-government views, police said.

"He wanted to kill as many people as he could and that's what he set out to do," said Mr Dyer.

"This was a random act of violence. These were unprovoked attacks by an individual who was intent on carrying out homicides today."

Mr Dyer added that Tuesday's attack "has nothing to do with terrorism in spite of the statements that he [Kori Ali Muhammad] made".

"He did clarify that the reason he had made that statement was that in the event that anything did happen to him that he was in fact pledging his allegiance to God for protection."

The most recent statistics compiled by the University of Southern California's Center for Religion and Civic Culture showed that Fresno, a city of just over 500,000 people, had a Muslim population of just over 1,800 in 2000.

In a statement on Facebook, the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno condemned the attack, saying: "The phrase Allahu Akbar, or God is Great, is a prayer of peace for 1.8 billion Muslims around the world."

The centre's Imam, Seyed Ali Ghazvini, said Mr Muhammad was not known to them.

"This individual does not represent our faith or our community," he told the Fresno Bee newspaper. "This individual does not represent your Muslim neighbour, your Muslim classmate or your co-worker. The Muslim community in the Valley are working hard for the well-being of our society and country."

Witnesses said they saw a man carrying a large handgun, which he reloaded several times between shots.

Mr Muhammad's father later told the Los Angeles Times that his son believed he was part of an ongoing war between whites and blacks and that "a battle was about to take place". He went by the nickname Black Jesus.

The latest shooting is also likely to reignite fresh debates about gun control in the US. More than 30,000 people are killed by gun violence across the country each year.

Herostratus (Ancient Greek: Ἡρόστρατος) — or That Who Is Not Lawful To Mention — was a 4th-century BC Greek arsonist, who sought notoriety by destroying the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

His acts prompted the creation of a damnatio memoriae law, forbidding anyone to mention his name. Nevertheless, his name has become a metonym for someone who commits a criminal act in order to become noted.

What is interesting, and telling about the Fresno gunman coverage (and this could also go in the Who are the new jihadis? thread as well) is the need to clarify that "he's not a terrorist" even though he kind of is. He just happens to have "snapped" even though he operated under a decades long ideology of terrorism, and was operating alone and wasn't a part of a larger network, and then one day went ballistic because someone disrespected him and he decided to capitalize on his first violent act.

Mr Muhammad's father later told the Los Angeles Times that his son believed he was part of an ongoing war between whites and blacks and that "a battle was about to take place". He went by the nickname Black Jesus.

It is kind of like the san bernardino mass shooter (2015) who was prepping, seemed to be acting alone, other than his wife, and got radicalized on the internet but then used what seems like a workplace dispute as an excuse. Same with Dylan Roof in Charleston, although he seems to not have had an angry confrontation before hand. Again, the "lone terrorist" finds a ideological cover for their own rage and turn their nihilistic suicidal agendas into political statements. There seems to be much made about terrorism cells recruiting, converting and indoctrinating members, but it seems like just dispersing the material is enough as there are already enough individuals primed to use such material for their own personal life vendettas.

ter·ror·ist
ˈterərəst/
noun
noun: terrorist; plural noun: terrorists
1.
a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.
"four commercial aircraft were hijacked by terrorists"
synonyms: extremist, fanatic; More
revolutionary, radical, insurgent, guerrilla, anarchist, freedom fighter;
bomber, gunman, assassin, hijacker, arsonist, incendiary
"the detainees are suspected terrorists"

adjective
adjective: terrorist
1.
unlawfully using violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.
"a terrorist organization"

So, I think this is an important variation on the self less terrorist killing for the cause, but a faux terrorist killing for personal narcissistic reasons but using the cover of a cause to greater embolden, justify, and publicize themselves. The "Facebook Killer" is an example of a pretty clear cut narcissistic sociopath with no greater agenda than himself, but he could have just as easily thrown in some larger political rhetoric or framework to muddy the waters. Whereas a truly suicidal terrorist has surrendered themselves completely to the cause, so much to where their identity and life have no importance. For the faux terrorist, though, their identity and life are so important, supreme, that any slight, humiliation or even lack of expected reward or advancement is cause to kill those who don't recognize such, but justified into a larger political context. A narcissistic suicidal individual bent on revenge could subsume their identity and join with others in a terrorist group to work out their personal grievances on society, but it seems like increasingly in the increasingly alienated society, you can just grab the ideology and hack it for your own personal agenda.

I propose then a new category:

Narcissistic/Faux Terrorist:
a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of a personal revenge agenda, but under the cover of larger political aims.
