Gunman fires on Alexandria park during GOP baseball practice; lawmaker Scalise among wounded

By
Peter Hermann, Paul Kane and Amber Phillips June 14 at 9:04 AM
A gunman opened fire Wednesday morning on a baseball practice at a park in Alexandria involving Republican members of Congress, injuring several people including at least one lawmaker, Steve Scalise, the majority whip, according to police and a congressman.

Alexandria police would only confirm that a shooting at Eugene Simpson Stadium Parkhad occurred and that one person was in custody.

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), in an interview with The Washington Post, confirmed early details. King said Capitol Police confirmed the account to him.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) told The Post that Capitol Police officers walked into the congressional gym around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and told members about the shooting and said Scalise had been shot.

Scalise, from Louisiana, is the third-highest ranking House Republican and has a round-the-clock Capitol Police detail.

President Trump issued this statement: “The vice president and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) tweeted that a “shooter attacked a GOP baseball practice. Rifle. 50+ shots fired. 5 hit including Steve Scalise. I am not shot.” He estimated 50 to 100 shots were fired.

Scalise, who has been in Congress since 2008, represents a district that includes some New Orleans suburbs and bayou parishes. Before entering Congress, he was a lawmaker in Louisiana for eight years. Scalise and his wife, Jennifer, have two children and live in Jefferson, La.

The 7:30 a.m. gathering in the park in the 400 block of East Monroe Street was the final practice before Thursday night’s scheduled game between Republicans and Democrats at Nationals Park. The park is near the Potomac Yard shopping center on Route 1 and Old Town Alexandria. It has two well-groomed baseball fields, one big and one smaller, for little leaguers. It is adjacent to a YMCA and across the street from a CVS and an Aldi grocery store.

Katie Fillus of Alexandria had just gotten out of her car to walk her dogs in the park nearby when she said she heard “very, very loud popping sounds.”

It appears the shooter is in custody, is white and no one is dead.

It's a goddam miracle.

Thank the Sisters of the Universe.

Of course not terrorism, the guy must have had serious mental health issues.

Wonder what will come of this. Targets Republicans.

Crazy.

Shooter identified by law enforcement officials as James T. Hodgkinson

The shooter at the GOP congressional baseball practice this morning is James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., according to law enforcement officials. Hodgkinson, 66, owns a home inspection business. His home inspection license expired in November 2016 and was not renewed, state records show.

Hodgkinson was charged in April 2006 with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle, according to online records in St. Clair County, Illinois. The charges were dismissed, records show.

Southern Europe? Enjoy a healthy dose of some nice local wine...bread...cheese...It seems that he is was only lightly injured, but I fear for the worse...Of course people had been getting at Trump for not mentioning domestic mass shootings/killings, as you all know...So now the shooting becomes political so he has to deal with it ...by?

The Daily Mail has all the gory details...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ctice.html

I was a pretty good student in Jr High but one of the few days I ever ditched, we got picked up because we ran from the cops...and ended up with a few hours after school on the day Reagan was shot...

I also came to intimately understand political violence while living in Mexico in the early '90s...

Virginia:
No background checks
No licensing
No registration
No permit req’d for concealed carry of long guns
Open carry long guns & handguns
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

…Representative Ron DeSantis, a Florida Republican, left a few minutes before the shooting but told Fox News that a man walked up and asked if Republicans or Democrats were out on the field. He wasn’t carrying anything, DeSantis said.

‘Very, Very Strange’

“The encounter I had in the parking lot was very, very strange,” DeSantis said, although it is unclear whether the person was the assailant.…

House panel considers bill easing gun silencer restrictions
By JOHN BRESNAHAN 06/12/2017 03:05 PM EDT

A House committee will begin considering this week a highly controversial proposal making it easier to buy gun silencers.

It’s the first such hearing to directly raise gun rights issues since President Donald Trump won the White House last year, and there is already strong opposition from gun-control groups to the measure due to the silencer provision. A number of Senate Democrats are also opposed to any such action, and they have promised to block any legislation that includes a loosening of silencer restrictions.

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) included the silencer provision as part of a broader bill, the “Sportsmen Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act,” or SHARE Act. There are several gun-related items in the package, including the silencer language. A "discussion draft" of SHARE Act will be reviewed by a House Natural Resources subcommittee on Wednesday.

Duncan has pushed to ease regulations on silencers for several years. A stand-alone silencer bill – called the “Hearing Protection Act” – was introduced by Duncan this January and now has 146 co-sponsors, including several Democrats.

And Duncan held a demonstration last week on gun silencers at a shooting range run by the U.S. Capitol Police in the Rayburn House Office Building. Roughly a dozen members attended the session, said a source.

Duncan and other pro-gun rights lawmakers say silencers are popular with hunter and sports shooters, and he notes that 40 states allow the use of silencers while hunting.

“The Hearing Protection Act has been one of the most important bills for sportsmen and women this Congress, which is why it’s common sense for it to be included in this year’s sportsman’s legislative package,” Duncan said. “By changing the outdated regulation of suppressors to an instant background check, just like the requirements to purchase a typical firearm, I hope the sportsmen and women in the United States will have greater access to noise reduction technology as they carry the hunting and recreational shooting tradition to future generations.”

Under the 1934 National Firearms Act, silencers are treated similarly to machine guns and explosives. The waiting time to purchase one is far longer than for handguns or other weapons, as much as nine months or more, and buyers have to submit fingerprints and a photograph. Federal law enforcement agencies keep a record of silencer purchases. There is also a $200 transfer tax on silencers.

Duncan’s proposal would eliminate those requirements, as well as refunding the $200 transfer tax to anyone who has purchased a silencer since October 2015.

Gun-control groups are bitterly opposed to the Duncan legislation, saying it would make the use of silencers more prevalent and possibly cause more deadly mass shootings. The gun-control groups argue that since potential victims won’t hear gunfire, they won’t be able to protect themselves.

“As Americans mark one year since the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando - the worst mass shooting in our nation's history - the gun lobby is trying to sneak a dangerous provision through Congress to make it easier for dangerous people to buy silencers,” said a statement from Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Gun Sense in America. “This provision would profit gun manufacturers while making law enforcement's job more difficult and potentially making mass shootings even more deadly.”

It’s not clear if or when the broader bill may be acted on by the Natural Resources Committee. It would still likely have to get sign-off from two other House committees — Judiciary and Ways and Means — before getting to the House floor.

Goddamn Slad, can we stop with the TRump TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP, shit in every post? This is not an attack on you as a person. I resonate and vibe with you really well, so I don't mean it as an attack on you personally, but God damn, your smart enough to know that the whole god-damned system is broken, and further, these selections are window dressings; one man isn't the problem he's just a symptom of a disease much deeper. Putin is right in his latest video -at least in one thing-, the puppets change, but the endless war policy continues and has through three administrations according to Vladimir. He's right from that perspective. Though the critical minded American knows the game has been rigged for much longer that that. And fully came online when 911 happened ...

The George W. Bush administration put the Continuity of Operations plan into effect for the first time directly following the September 11 attacks.[13] Their implementation involved a rotating staff of 75 to 150 senior officials and other government workers from every federal executive department and other parts of the executive branch in two secure bunkers on the East Coast. Friends, family, and co-workers were only able to reach them through a toll-free number and personal extensions. The Bush administration did not acknowledge the implementation of the COG plan until March 1, 2002.[14][15]

Since its inception, the newly created Department of Homeland Security has conducted at least three exercises to test continuity plans. The first, named "Forward Challenge '04", took place from May 12 to May 13, 2004, and included more than 40 government agencies.[16] The second major exercise took place from June 20 to June 24, 2005. Titled "Pinnacle", the exercise tested responses to various emergencies, including a hypothetical act of terrorism.[17] "Forward Challenge '06" was the third major exercise, and took place on June 19, 2006. It reportedly involved nearly 4,000 government personnel.[18]

In 2007, Larry Sabato, a professor at the University of Virginia, criticized the incomplete nature of the plan in his book A More Perfect Constitution. In particular, he objected to the fact that there is no constitutional procedure for replacing U.S. House members in the case of a large-scale disaster which could potentially kill a large number of representatives. In regard to the Continuity of Operations Plan, Sabato said it "failed outright" during the September 11 attacks.

We are still under COG, and those emergency powers no matter who the lead puppet is... So let's quit pretending otherwise.

I was watching CBS this morning and they interviewed Senator Rand Paul, who was on the field and ran away from the bullets. He claimed he heard from another staffer that the shooter mentioned something about health care before he started firing.
