Reviews: Wu Ming express values, desires for a better world

Image

“Altai” picks up after “Q” and the central character of “Q”—a German radical who passed through many an uprising—appears in “Altai” as well. The book’s main character is a spy for Venice who is set up to take a fall for political purposes right at the novel’s beginning and ends up working for his former enemies. I don’t want to spoil any of the plot points so let me just say that he undergoes important personal transformations and becomes embroiled in further intrigue and military expeditions.

“Altai” is a spy novel, full of gripping suspense and tension. There’s enough mystery to captivate, but it never gets confusing. And while there are militant moments, this is not a book that glorifies war—far from it. The book expresses a profound skepticism that military measures can achieve human liberation, and rightly so in my view.

The book is set largely in Constantinople, contemporary Istanbul. As Istanbul’s been the scene of vile repression and heroic protest lately, it seems to me that the publication of “Altai” in English is appropriately timed. While the earlier book, “Q,” had more scenes of ordinary people in rebellion than “Altai,” “Altai” is still concerned with issues of power and social change. If the world is a chess board, we are the front row, the pawns, and they the back row, the kings, queens, bishops, who are willing to see us suffer and die for petty rivalry and profit. Except at its edges, “Altai” doesn’t depict people in rebellion against their positions, but rather it focuses on the people in power and the terrible things they are willing to do. The sympathies of the novel, however, lie with the pawns, or with the movements that aim to kick the board off the table and begin a new game altogether.

The book is resonant with the present moment as well because of the central role that Jewish identity, anti-Semitism and struggles for a Jewish homeland play in the novel. I would describe the novel as anti-Zionist and anti-racist, which is to say, certainly not anti-Semitic. This theme is obviously relevant to the present given continuing conflicts and tensions, as well as popular rebellions, in the Middle East and the role of Israel and U.S. support for Israel in shaping that region.

I often feel unsophisticated as a reader of fiction (I read for enjoyment, not profundity), so I’m not totally sure about this, but I think the falcon, the Altai of the novel’s title and a few scenes, is a symbol. At one point in “Altai,” a character named Ismail, the revolutionary who was the main character in “Q,” argues that the methods used in a struggle shape its goals: “If you want to catch a hare, whether you hunt it with hounds or with a falcon, on foot or on horseback, it will always be a hare. Freedom, on the other hand, never remains the same; it changes according to the way you hunt. And if you train dogs to catch it for you, you may just bring back a doggy kind of freedom.” The novel’s narrator, as a spy, then former spy, then spy for another master, is not a dog. He’s a kind of falcon, with more freedom and sophistication than a hunting dog. And yet, falcons are leashed and hooded by the hunters who own them, and hunters set their agenda and take the results of the hunt. The narrator finds a limited kind of freedom and fulfilment via playing that role, but at significant cost. He tells Ismail, “Machiavelli wrote that you must keep your eye on the end, not the means.” Ismail replies, “Over the years I’ve learned that the means change the end.” Perhaps the difference between dogs and altai is not so great; if our route to freedom involves hoods and leashes, it may end up not being the freedom we wanted.

“Altai” is a rich novel and not a simplistic political fable, so I don’t want to reduce the book to a simple set of political lessons. Instead, I would like to end by talking about the importance of stories like this. As radicals, I think we need stories that express our values, both our hopes and our outrages, our desires for a better world and our rejection of this world. Wu Ming writes those kinds of stories.

Sequel to Q, in which characters from the first book come back to settle old scores, as the Republic of Venice and the whole 16th Century world order seem ready to crumble.

Jerome Corsi: The Pope Supports LGBTQ ‘Pedophilia Agenda’

By Jared Holt | August 31, 2018 12:54 pm

Jerome Corsi, Washington bureau chief for Alex Jones’ Infowars, said in a livestream video yesterday that he believed that Pope Francis was OK with pedophilia being mainstreamed by LGBTQ activists.

The Catholic Church is in the headlines once again for the crimes of priests after a Pennsylvania grand jury issued a damning report on child sex abuse by hundreds of priests against thousands of children, and the subsequent cover-up conducted by bishops. In one of his daily live videos, Corsi blamed Pope Francis’ supportive remarks about LGBTQ people for the child sex abuse scandals rocking the church.

“I’m convinced that Pope Francis is OK with homosexuality and does not seem to be offended by the pedophilia agenda, which is the next horizon for the LGBT, to desensitize people to pedophilia as if, ‘Well, it’s just this older person mentoring this younger person‘—not dealing with all the psychological abuses that come along to youth who are sexually abused or groomed into the sex trade,” Corsi said.

He went on to claim that the corruption of the Catholic church was “institutional” and likened that corruption to the fact that Hillary Clinton has not been arrested, something that Corsi believes to be unjust. (Hillary Clinton is not Catholic.)

“And a lot of our institutions right now, I think as we are likely in End Days—certainly it feels like it—we are going to see a lot of these institutions collapse from corruption from within,” Corsi said.

‘You Want A Revolution?’ Josh Bernstein Promises Bloodshed If Democrats Try To Impeach Trump

Right-wing commentator Josh Bernstein posted a video yesterday in which he warned that if Democrats gain control of Congress in the midterm elections and try to impeach President Trump, it will lead to “the most violent, bloodiest revolution in the history in the history of the United States.”

After declaring that liberals “hate” those who voted for Trump and will use the power of government to systemically punish them, Bernstein called on Republicans and conservatives to “do whatever you can” to prevent Democrats from winning control of Congress in the midterms or else this country is going to be torn apart.

“We have a situation that is so desperate, so dangerous,” he warned. “If these people, God forbid, take over, it’s just going to be a disaster.”

“If they do try to impeach this president, it’s not going to be pretty, folks,” Bernstein warned. “There are millions of Americans like myself and the people watching this show that absolutely love President Trump. He’s done amazing things, amazing things. He has accomplished things that no president has ever accomplished in his first two years and you have the audacity to try to take that away from us? Go ahead and try it. Bring it on, liberals. C’mon. Bring it on. You want a revolution? You try to impeach our president and you will see the most violent, bloodiest revolution in the history of the United States.”

“I’m not making any veiled threats,” he added. “I’m letting you know the reality of the situation.”

Jerome Corsi’s Feud With The ‘Deep State’ Just Got Real

By Jared Holt | September 5, 2018 2:19 pm

Image

Jerome Corsi, former Infowars Washington bureau chief, has been subpoenaed in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between President Trump’s campaign staff and Russian officials.

Maggie Haberman at The New York Times reports that Corsi has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury on Friday, where he is expected to be asked about his discussions with GOP dirty trickster Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of Trump who served as a campaign adviser. Corsi’s lawyer told Haberman that Corsi “fully intends to comply with the subpoena.” From The Times:

Mr. Corsi, who has worked with the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on his Infowars operation, has dealt with Mr. Stone on and off for years. Mr. Corsi was also one of the people whom President Trump, before he was a candidate, contacted for information about former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate in pressing the false claim that Mr. Obama was not born in the United States.

Mr. Corsi’s name came up when federal agents stopped and detained a professor and author, Ted Malloch, at a Boston airport last March. Mr. Malloch told NBC at the time that, among other questions, federal investigators asked him about Mr. Stone, whom he had met a handful of times, about WikiLeaks and about Mr. Corsi, who had helped edit one of his books.

In March, we were first to report that Corsi challenged Mueller to a fight behind the Department of Justice. During an episode of “The Alex Jones Show” hosted by his then-boss, Corsi grew increasingly upset at Mueller, telling Jones that he wanted to tell Mueller, “Let’s go out in the backyard of the Justice Department. You’ve got to have some—let’s duke it out. I mean, you want to behave like a thug? You want to behave like that? Well, this is what you deserve. Let’s duke it out. You’re finished. You’re a hack. The whole investigation is a criminal set-up.”

Corsi’s current narrative—and the subject of his latest book—supposes that covert forces within the Trump administration are systemically destroying the so-called “deep state” in which, Corsi believes, Mueller is a key figure.

Haberman also reported that Corsi no longer works for Infowars.

Chris McDonald: Opposition To Trump Is Opposition To God Himself

By Kyle Mantyla | September 6, 2018 10:26 am

On Tuesday night’s broadcast of right-wing commentator Chris McDonald’s “The Mc Files” program, McDonald warned that those who oppose President Trump are “getting in the way of God himself” and that those who try to take Trump on inevitably find themselves either in jail or dead.

“These people do not realize they’re not just coming up against Donald Trump,” McDonald said. “Donald Trump was God’s plan for America and people that get in the way of that plan need to realize that it’s not the man they’re getting in the face of and the train of, they’re getting in the way of God himself. I would stake my life on that claim right now, because I’ve watched too many things go on in these last 18 months of this man’s presidency that lets me know that God is directing him.”

“The leadership part of him is God-driven and God-anointed and we had better respect that or we’re going to face consequences in this country that we don’t want to face,” he added. “A lot of his detractors, a lot of people that have been the most harshest coming up against him are either in jail or they’re dead and I’ll just leave it at that. And they need to realize that this is not by mistake, that God is protecting this president.”

Dave Janda: Anything QAnon Gets Wrong ‘Just Hasn’t Played All The Way Out Yet’

By Kyle Mantyla | September 10, 2018 11:37 am

Right-wing radio host Dave Janda appeared on Greg Hunter’s “USA Watchdog” program on Saturday, where he declared that QAnon is real and that anything that Q had reported that appears to be false simply has not come true yet.

QAnon is an anonymous figure at the center of a right-wing conspiracy theory holds that a White House insider has been steadily dropping hints on the 8Chan forum board that the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election is actually cover for a secret Trump administration effort to take down a global pedophile ring.

Near the end of Saturday’s broadcast, Hunter somewhat desperately asked Janda to confirm that “Q is real,” which Janda did by insisting that Q has been right about everything while asserting that anything that appears to be false only looks that way because Q is “so far ahead of the game” that the information “just hasn’t played all the way out yet.”

“A significant part of the information that Q has provided has actually been accurate,” Janda said. “There has been, according to my sources, some misinformation in some of the things that Q has put forward, but the majority has actually been on target and, in fact, has been ahead of the game. Sometimes, you can be so far ahead of the game, you look wrong when, in fact, you’re right [and] it just hasn’t played all the way out yet.”

“The vast majority of information that has been said to be wrong is actually going to be proven to be right, it just has to play out over time,” Janda added. “My sources say that the information that has been said to be wrong just hasn’t played all the way out.”

Also, check this out:

FROM PIZZAGATE TO Q-ANON: THE INFLUENCE CAMPAIGN THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

ADAM GORIGHTLY
THURSDAY, AUGUST 9TH

Just when you thought Pizzagate was the dumbest conspiracy theory of all time (the Bowling Green Massacre notwithstanding), along comes “follow the white rabbit” or “calm before the storm” or “the Great Awakening” or “Q-Anon” or whatever you want to call this latest in a long line of overlapping conspiracies that oozed out of the 2016 Presidential campaign like a backed-up toilet that keeps on giving. (Thanks, Vlad!) The Q-Anon conspiracy could be considered Pizzagate 2.0— or perhaps better, Pizzagate on the “brown acid.” (Pizzagate on bad drugs if it wasn’t on bad drugs already).

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and even rocks have internet service these days) you’ve no doubt come across bits and pieces of Pizzagate in the form of Instagram photos depicting child sex slaves at Comet Ping Pong, child porn code words (CP!), celebrity “spirit cooking,” and tunnels connecting a vast satanic underground supposedly constructed by Democratic Party pervs.

Sorry for the harsh tone, but I can't take someone seriously when they post a video of two people wearing rubber masks thinking it's evidence of robot impostors/AI (not you, but "James Red Pills America").

Oh, and more generally: anyone with the words "Red Pill" in their username is probably an idiot. I love how the alt-right has co-opted a term first spoken by a black actor in a movie directed by two sisters who used to be brothers. :)
