Why do people apologise for the USA?

I mean, not only is it a hellhole of entrenched greed, corruption, injustice, inequality, brutality, mendacity, cruelty, exploitation, stupidification and cheeseburgers, all of it sold to you by coiffeured and screeching media whores on ubiquitous giant TV sets 24 hours a day; it is also, and undeniably, the earth's major (and completely unapologetic) immiserator, and has been for many decades now. So why do people apologise for the USA, i.e., defend it, as opposed to actually stopping it and then saying sorry to the planet?

Ours not to reason why.

Usually because they're being paid to do so. Not much of a secret there.

Boy are all you "America belongs on the trash-heap of history" folks in for a rude awakening when that which your First World lifestyles have granted you the luxury of being able to wish for actually comes to pass. Because what comes next is going to make the worst depredations and abuses of the "American Century" look like a quasi-mythical Golden Age by comparison.

I do not approve of America's involvement in the removal of Dr Mossadegh, a decent and good man, in 1953, and I do not support the idea of invading, occupying, or otherwise waging war on Iran now. I support the Obama administration's strenuous, near Herculean efforts to begin, against the weight of so much anti-Iran sentiment in America (both in the Halls of Power and among the population at large), a process of engagement and detente with Iran.

Nevertheless, the above list is so laughably ahistorical, ignorant and wrong as to barely be worthy of attention.

Suffice it to say that upon reviewing it, a great many individuals in leadership positions in Iran would probably raise an eyebrow and say "Hey now, wait just a minute, buddy!" But only in private.

No apologies for the apologists. The 'settlement' of America continued, expanded and then some the British Empire's practices of colonialism, slavery, imperialism, etc.......

That's a great point, Cordelia.

I always have to laugh when I see people, both left and right, talking about "evil empires" but never wanting to go back farther than living memory to explore the idea. Because the regimes of Hitler and Stalin were terrible, but in terms of pure sadism, Belgian King Leopold had them both beat. And when it comes to wreaking death and misery across the land, NOBODY did it better than the British Crown.

Evidence? Shmevidence. Jerky must be telling the truth, because [cue drumroll...] Jerky asserted that it was the truth. Assertions paired with sniggers suffice. Jerky truly is the Voice of America. He could replace Nikki Haley at the UN.

The superiority is increasingly delusional of course. Except that America has those nukes, and it's the only nation ever to have used them.

A sense of entitlement.

Highly recommended radio piece that illustrates exactly this just beautifully (horrifically)

JULY 28TH 2017: BARBADOS EXAMINED (Latino Media Collective)
On this episode, the LMC speaks with Jason Opal, the assoc professor of History & Classical Studies @ McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He will tell us about the extraordinary brutal history of slavery and the struggle for social justice in Barbados. The slave state of Barbados was so horrific, the future USA took notes.
