Florida has a gun problem, and Governor Rick Scott is to blame

When you think of Valentine’s Day, you think of chocolates, hearts, and flowers.

For 17 students and faculty members from Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, there will indeed be flowers – but it will be for their wakes and funerals.

On Valentine’s Day at Stoneman Douglas, the air was thick with not love, but panic, fear, and death, as 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, a former student, went on a shooting rampage with an AR-15 rifle.

It was the same kind of gun used in shootings in Las Vegas, San Bernardino, and on a classroom full of first-graders at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Fox News' Shepard Smith issues emotional plea for reform after Florida school shooting

In the past six years, five of the six deadliest shootings were carried out using an AR-15.

Sandy Hook, which happened in 2012, rocked the nation. Yet the government did virtually nothing – and students and faculty continue to pay for the government’s carelessness with their limbs and lives: since Sandy Hook, more than 400 people have been shot in over 200 school shootings across the nation.

In Florida, where the Parkland shooting happened, an AR-15 rifle, designed specifically for the purpose of inflicting mass casualties and maximum carnage, is easier to obtain than a handgun.

Federal law requires gun buyers to be 21 years of age before purchasing a handgun. In the state of Florida, you only have to buy 18 to buy an AR-15. There’s no waiting period; you can be out on the street with your new heat the same day.

Florida – the gunshine state – appallingly thinks it’s a good idea that teenagers can legally buy near military grade weapons designed for the battlefield before they can legally buy a beer.

Florida shooting – in pictures

Nikolas Cruz, a student who was assessed to be such a threat he couldn’t even carry a backpack to school, legally bought his deadly weapon three days after being expelled.

Florida’s governor, Rick Scott, weaseled out of answering any questions on why it’s okay to sell weapons to teenagers with no waiting period. He should be able to answer that easily, as he’s the one who signed the bills into law.

Scott’s reluctance to commit to any solutions can be explained by his endorsements. He’s championed by the National Rifle Association (NRA), with an “A+ rating.” In 2014, the NRA’s Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) praised Scott, stating “Rick has signed more pro-gun bills into law in one term than any other governor in Florida history.”

Scott said “there’s a time” to talk about gun control – but it seems like that time is never now. While Governor Scott is dodging questions, our kids are dodging bullets.

Florida’s Republican politicians – and the GOP overwhelmingly as a whole, including Donald Trump – have raked in millions of dollars from the NRA.

The day after the shooting in Parkland, three kids at three different schools in North Texas were arrested for bringing guns to school.

Meanwhile, in California, there’s a 12-year-old kid with a bullet lodged in his head. A refugee from Iraq – a literal war zone – Issa Al-Bayati was shot in the head at school. It didn’t happen in Iraq; it happened here, in the United States.

Two weeks later, he still has a bullet in his head because his family can’t afford the cost of having it removed. His former teacher started a Go Fund Me to help pay his medical expenses because in the US, you have a right to guns, but not healthcare.

We have a nationwide epidemic and now we need a nationwide solution. Gun control works, and the evidence proves it.

The Constitution ensures our right to bear arms, yes – but the rights of our children being able to go to school safely far outweigh the right of an eighteen-year-old being able to buy war weaponry.

Here's How Much the NRA Has Given to Florida Lawmakers

By ALANA ABRAMSON Updated: February 19, 2018 3:08 PM ET | Originally published: February 15, 2018
Florida lawmakers who received donations from the National Rifle Association came under scrutiny after Wednesday’s high school shooting in Parkland.

After 17 people were killed when alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz, open fire on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, many social media users highlighted how much money members of Congress have received from the gun rights group.

In the 2016 election cycle, 19 federal election candidates in Florida races received more than $40,000 from the NRA’s Political Victory Fund, the Political Action Committee, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who ran for both the Presidency and the Senate, raked in the highest donation, receiving $9,900. As a PAC, the NRA can give up to $10,000 per candidate in an election cycle, $5000 for a primary election and $5000 for a general. Rubio also received an A+ rating from the NRA.

Florida has relatively relaxed gun laws, which could have eased the path for this shooting; no permit is required to purchase a firearm or handgun, according to the NRA, and there is requirement to register these weapons, although a permit is necessary to carry a handgun. In 2016, the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence gave Florida an “F” on the stringency of its gun laws.

These laws are drafted by state legislatures—not Congressmen and Senators—and signed by the Governor, in this case Rick Scott. Scott who is strongly considering a Senate run to challenge Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson, is like Rubio, a favorite among the NRA, who noted in 2014 that he had signed “more pro-gun bills into law — in one term — than any other Governor in Florida history.” Nelson and Scott have contrasting ratings from the NRA: Nelson has an F and Scott has an A+.

When asked Wednesday evening about gun control laws following the shooting, Scott said there would be a time for those conversations in the future. He was also somewhat evasive when asked why a teenager was able to have an AR-15 rifle, saying an investigation was underway and it would be hard to determine a response without those facts.

Each new breaking news situation is an opportunity for trolls to grab attention, provoke emotions, and spread propaganda. The Russian government knows this. Fake-news manufacturing teenagers in Macedonia know this. Twitter bot creators know this. And thanks to data-gathering operations from groups like the Alliance for Securing Democracy and RoBhat Labs, the world knows this.

In the wake of Wednesday’s Parkland, Florida school shooting, which resulted in 17 deaths, troll and bot-tracking sites reported an immediate uptick in related tweets from political propaganda bots and Russia-linked Twitter accounts. Hamilton 68, a website created by Alliance for Securing Democracy, tracks Twitter activity from accounts it has identified as linked to Russian influence campaigns. As of morning, shooting-related terms dominated the site’s trending hashtags and topics, including Parkland, guncontrolnow, Florida, guncontrol, and Nikolas Cruz, the name of the alleged shooter. Popular trending topics among the bot network include shooter, NRA, shooting, Nikolas, Florida, and teacher.

The proposed budget calls for a $25 million funding cut for nationwide school safety activities and the elimination of a $400 million grant program that school districts can use to offer mental health aid or to prevent bullying.

The funds that are on the chopping block were used to provide mental health services to students and teachers in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children between 6 and 7 years old and six adult staff members were killed in the worst school shooting in American history.https://www.voanews.com/a/trump-to-visi ... 57824.html

What you need to know about the FBI tip-line that failed in the Florida shooting
Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY Published 4:47 p.m. ET Feb. 19, 2018 | Updated 5:46 p.m. ET Feb. 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — Until FBI Director Christopher Wray acknowledged Friday that the bureau’s tip-line had failed to act on crucial information about Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz more than a month before last week’s massacre, the busy call center had been operating in near-anonymity from its hub in rural West Virginia.

Nearly 4 million telephone calls and emails have poured into the so-called Public Access Line since the operations were consolidated six years ago.

The program, which grew out of the FBI’s effort to combat massive fraud spawned by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, was aimed at centralizing separate call centers that had been functioning at all 56 field offices across the country – freeing up more agents to work the streets in divisions across the country.

► More: Florida shooting puts gun-control pressure on Trump
► More: How the FBI handled two tips related to Nikolas Cruz

In wake of the tip-line's breakdown in the Cruz case, it is now the focus of an internal FBI review. Lawmakers, meanwhile, have called for congressional inquiries and President Trump offered his own rebuke in a weekend tweet, saying that the FBI was "spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion."

Here, we break down everything you need to know about the tip-line.

How are tips routed to the FBI public access line?

Typically, calls of all kinds are received at local FBI field offices across the country where they are sorted by topic.

Those with leads on potential crimes or threats to public safety are transferred to the call center located at the FBI's offices in Clarksburg, W.Va., the same location that houses the National Instant Criminal Background Check System that reviews the backgrounds of gun purchasers.

Who receives and assesses the information?

Former Assistant FBI Director Stephen Morris, who once oversaw the FBI's West Virginia operations, said that more than 100 staffers handle the information, which is reviewed not only for the raw material being provided but also for the source's credibility.

When possible, the information is evaluated against bureau databases in an attempt to further verify the material.

When is the tip referred for additional investigation?

The process can be largely "subjective," Morris said, as analysts assess the credibility of the source and content of the lead.

Generally, when a tip is determined to have investigative merit, a supervisor reviews the information before it is routed to the appropriate field office for further investigation.

What happened in the Cruz case?

On Jan. 5, according to FBI, the public access line received information from "a person close to Cruz" about the suspect's "gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior...and the potential of him conducting a school shooting.

"Under established protocols," the FBI said, "the information provided by the caller should have been assessed as a potential threat to life. The information should have been forwarded to FBI Miami field office, where appropriate investigative steps would have been taken... The information was not provided to the Miami field office, and no further investigation was conducted at that time."

How much information is not deemed worthy of additional investigation?

Nearly 98 percent – or 1.4 million – reports to the FBI's tip-line in 2017 did not warrant follow-up investigation, according to a report by the bureau's Criminal Justice Information Services Division.

Morris, the former assistant FBI director, said it is not uncommon for analysts to be fielding calls that have no connection to threats or potential criminal activity.

"There are some people who call in to ask why they haven't gotten their social security check. Some callers are abusive and analysts have to sort through that to determine if there is important information there. It's not an easy job."

Florida Governor Rick Scott Won’t Attend CNN Town Hall on Florida School Shooting
by Justin Baragona | 2:45 pm, February 19th, 2018

This coming Wednesday, CNN will hold a televised town hall event on the recent horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The live event, which will be held at BB&T Center, will include classmates of the victims, parents, and members of the community. CNN also invited prominent Florida lawmakers and politicians to take part in the town hall.

While Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) have all confirmed that they will attend the forum, the state’s Republican governor has told CNN he won’t be there.

“With only two weeks left of our annual legislative session, Governor Rick Scott will be in Tallahassee meeting with state leaders to work on ways to keep Florida students safe, including school safety improvements and keeping guns away from individuals struggling with mental illness,” Gov. Rick Scott’s office told CNN.

According to CNN, President Donald Trump has also declined the network’s invitation.

Following the deadly shooting, Parkland student Cameron Kasky said Scott had the blood of the 17 people who died on his hands.
