Vermont Senator says business model of Democratic Party has been a failure for 15 years

Bernie Sanders has triggered a backlash by making comments interpreted as an attack on Barack Obama on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.

The senator for Vermont appeared to criticise the first black US President as he branded the Democratic Party a "failure".

Speaking in Jackson, Mississippi, he said Democrats had lost a record number of legislative seats.

"People sometimes don't see that because there was a charismatic individual named Barack Obama. He was obviously an extraordinary candidate, brilliant guy. But beyond that reality..."

Mr Sanders' comments were quickly branded "patronising" and "deplorable".

Actor Jeffrey Wright, who appeared in the James Bond and Hunger Games film series, said Mr Sanders was "giving a master class on expressing TOTAL ignorance of how black folks work."

Mr Sanders said that the Democratic Party "has got to be a 50-state party" and had to listen to voters all over the country, "including some of the poorest states".

He is touted as a leading Democratic candidate for 2020 but recently refused to say whether he would run, telling the Burlington Free Press on Tuesday: "Well, 2020 is a little bit too far in the future."

Speaking at commemorations in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr Sanders told the crowd that Martin Luther King Jr was "one of the great leaders of American history".

He said: "Dr Martin Luther King was not just a great civil rights leader. He was more than that. He was a nonviolent revolutionary.

This will get even rougher. For preview, see the number being done on Tulsi Gabbard as opposed to Kamala Harris. And this just for being against war most of the time, instead of for it all of the time.

What matters and shows the way forward against the perpetual smears not just on Sanders but all that is not just straight up DNC capitulation to capitalism:

- Teachers strikes keep winning, for a reason.

- NODAPL, Green New Deal.

- Flight attendants threatened strike, killed Trump shutdown.

- I do believe the Yellow Vests, yes - a non-violent militant protest, regardless of what happens when the cops start breaking heads.

- Poor People's Campaign.

- Continuing fights for $15 and higher. (Sanders' challenges to specific corporations have worked to build a lot of credibility, I expect.)

- Medicare 4 All without gradualism - it's just France, not an NHS, for chrissakes. The care providers are mostly private, the drugs are generic, only the insurers go away.

- Did I mention organizing and strikes?

These kinds of movements and mobilizations have to lead. One thing he seemed to show awareness of rhetorically and deftly most of the time was that he is nothing, the movements formulate and lead.

The missing element:

- I do believe and of course many of my predictions have been worthless (and most have been premature even when right) that the time is finally NOW to boldly speak out for peace and an end to the empire, against wars and interventions and the arms trade.
