HELENA — U.S. Sen. Steve Daines will take a private jet back to Washington D.C. on his daughter's wedding day if Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court comes down to his vote, the Montana Republican said Friday.

Daines still plans to attend his daughter's wedding back home in Montana on Saturday regardless of when the Senate schedules what is expected to be a very close final vote on Kavanaugh.

But if it appears Kavanaugh will not be confirmed without Daines' vote, he has made arrangements to use Republican U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte's private jet to return to Washington after the ceremony, Daines said in a statement to The Associated Press.

"My good friend and colleague, Greg, has come to save the day. If I need to be in two places at once to walk my daughter down the aisle on her wedding day and to be the final vote to put Judge Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, he's offered me use of his plane. I appreciate his generosity as well as his dedication to family and country," Daines said.

THIS is why Democrats did NOT want Michael Avenatti to get involved in this fight. Collins is specifically citing Swetnick's "gang rape" accusation as something that made her think she needed to give Kavanaugh the benefit of the doubt.

If anyone really think that Susan Collins would have voted against Kavanaugh if

1) Avenatti hadn't repped Swetnick;

or

2) Dems had made a bigger issue out of Ed Whelan

or

3) [INSERT PERSONAL OBSESSION HERE]

then you didn't listen to a syllable of Collins' speech.

Back on September 13th, Congress sent the 2019 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill to Donald Trump’s desk for his signature or veto. That bill just happened to include $162 million for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Even though Portsmouth itself is in New Hampshire, the shipyard is located just across the state line in Susan Collins’ state of Maine. Collins was particularly pleased by the measure, as evidenced by the statement she released, which was quoted by the Bangor Daily News at the time.

The only thing confirmed this week was the Republican party’s contempt for women.

Over the month of September, RAINN’s programs helped 28,509 people, up from 18,129 the previous September

After Kavanaugh hearing, calls to rape crisis lines soar in Dallas, nationwide

Written by

Dana Branham

Sexual assault crisis hotlines in Dallas and around the country have been inundated with calls since last week when a Senate hearing addressed sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
At the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center, the Sept. 27 hearing prompted a “dramatic” increase in calls to its hotline, chief executive officer Amy Jones said.
She said advocates noticed a similarity among the callers: Many are women in their 50s and 60s who were sexually assaulted as teenagers and never told anyone about it.

“These are individuals who had a made a decision that it was never safe to tell anyone,” Jones said. “So they’re reaching out to us, and I’m so grateful that they are.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing centered on testimony from Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, a professor who has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when she was a teen.
The Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh's spot on the high court Saturday.

Jones said the hearing — and the response to it, including President Donald Trump's mocking Ford at a rally in Mississippi — was a “direct trigger” for the callers’ experiences.

While Jones didn’t have exact numbers available, she estimated a 50 percent increase in the number of calls the hotline was receiving each day since the hearing Sept. 27.
Advocates are also spending longer on the phone when they answer calls to the hotline, she said.
“The intensity of the crisis is much, much higher,” Jones said. “These folks seem to be really, really struggling.”

Dallas’ Genesis Women’s Shelter has also seen an increase in calls — particularly calls about sexual assault, according to a written statement from chief executive officer Jan Langbein.
The increasing calls for help that Dallas advocates have seen line up with what national sexual assault crisis organizations have witnessed, according to statistics from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.
RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline. On Sept. 28, the day after the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Kavanaugh and Ford, the hotline had its busiest day in history.
More than 3,000 people called the hotline for help that day, according to a news release. On an average day, the hotline helps 950 people.

Over the month of September, RAINN’s programs helped 28,509 people, up from 18,129 the previous September.

RAINN president Scott Berkowitz said in a news release that the numbers were unlike anything the organization had ever seen.
“History shows us that when high-profile allegations such as these are in the news, it often causes others to reach out too,” Berkowitz said. “This story has clearly resonated with survivors and has led thousands to reach out for help for the first time.”
Jones encouraged anyone who has experienced sexual assault to find someone they can talk to about it — whether that's a friend, family member or a trained listener on a crisis hotline.
"We always want to make sure people know that there are people — us — who believe them," she said. "We know that it’s not their fault what happened."

Former Yale Law School dean: Kavanaugh's confirmation an ‘American tragedy’
BY TAL AXELROD - 10/06/18 10:23 PM EDT 2,273
13,649

Former Yale Law School Dean Robert Post slammed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for stoking “the fires of partisan rage and male entitlement" in an op-ed in Politico Magazine

“For as long as Kavanaugh sits on the court, he will remain a symbol of partisan anger, a haunting reminder that behind the smiling face of judicial benevolence lies the force of an urgent will to power. No one who felt the force of that anger could possibly believe that Kavanaugh might actually be a detached and impartial judge,” Post wrote.

“Kavanaugh will inevitably become the focus of distrust and mobilization. His very presence will undermine the court’s claim to legitimacy; it will damage the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. It will be an American tragedy,” he added.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation process was rocked when three women went public with allegations of sexual misconduct against him from when he was in high school and college.

Kavanaugh vehemently denied the allegations before the Senate Judiciary Committee, calling the accusations planned “smears” that were part of Democrats’ “revenge on behalf of the Clintons.”

Kavanaugh’s partisan rhetoric during the hearing disturbed many on the left already outraged about the sexual misconduct allegations. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the lone GOP senator to not vote to confirm Kavanaugh, cited “matters of temperament” and “demeanor” in a speech Friday explaining her decision.

Post warned of the consequences of putting Kavanaugh on the court, writing, “Each and every Republican who votes for Kavanaugh, therefore, effectively announces that they care more about controlling the Supreme Court than they do about the legitimacy of the court itself. There will be hell to pay.”

Post also responded to an op-ed Kavanaugh wrote this week in The Wall Street Journal in which he defended his “emotional” testimony and reasserted the importance of an “independent and impartial judiciary.”

“Judge Kavanaugh cannot have it both ways. He cannot gain confirmation by unleashing partisan fury while simultaneously claiming that he possesses a judicial and impartial temperament. If Kavanaugh really cared about the integrity and independence of the Supreme Court, he would even now withdraw from consideration,” Post responded.

Protesters made their voices heard throughout Kavanaugh’s confirmation process, with many confronting individual senators on Capitol Hill to recount their own stories of sexual assault. Hundreds were arrested.

The Senate voted Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court by a 50-48 margin. He was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts and former Justice Anthony Kennedy in a private ceremony Saturday evening.

Of course the naval shipyard improvement was only done to appease Collins, had nothing to do with capital improvements needed to dry dock the newer Los Angeles class submarines that need maintenance. Or the fact that funding had been requested years ago etc..etc...

The need to modernize dry docks at the nations’ four public shipyards was underscored in a Government Accountability Office report last fall.

Why is anybody surprised that the government throws around contracts to various districts? It's what they do. Always have and always will. Even if Collins had voted against the bungling beer boy Bret the he still would have been approved with a Pence tie breaker. If you're going to cherry pick why not list all the graft and political shenanigans that go on ALL THE TIME with funding like that and other billions?

So Collins isn't allowed to view the testimony as not credible enough? How about all the evidence? Was the evidence credible? Oh thats right...there was no evidence. It was he said she said and the story had a lot of significant gaps. You can say it was contempt for women, but they gave it a public hearing and the key witness was allowed to speak and share her story. Apparently there was no physical evidence, or at least none that was brought to public light. All the rage and emotional pleas can't change those facts.

I'm NOT a fan of bungling Bret, especially after reading more of the docs you posted and others I found with the references to the Patriot Act and spying on American citizens.

There was no evidence to view because they refused to let the FBI gather it

They would be McGahn

There was no real investigation

But you certainly know that already....why you are pretending not to confuses me ...you obviously read every single word I post

McConnell says judiciary committee Republicans, plus Collins and Murkowski, agreed on the scope of the FBI investigation in that meeting in his office. An entirely opaque partisan process that seems to have been the key moment.

Here’s a list of people the FBI did NOT interview. Okay with this, Flake and Collins?
Greg Sargent
Opinion | Perjury is hard to prove. But that's not how we should judge Kavanaugh's testimony.

Post contributor Randall D. Eliason walks through the perjury claims around Brett M. Kavanaugh's Senate testimony, from the blackout denials to "boofing." (Gillian Brockell/The Washington Post)

The White House and Republicans have announced that the FBI’s reopened background check investigation into new accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh has been delivered to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Individual senators will now be able to review summaries of the FBI’s interviews under weirdly restrictive conditions, and it remains unclear whether the findings will ever be publicly released.

You’ll be shocked to hear that the White House has already pronounced the FBI report entirely exonerating for Kavanaugh, claiming that it is now “fully confident” Kavanaugh will be confirmed.

But a lot of new reporting has now emerged that starkly illustrates just how much about the new allegations was not investigated by the FBI. It’s important to note that this probably was not a failing on the FBI’s part but rather was the result of restrictions the White House placed on the probe, a process that itself remains shrouded in disingenuous rhetorical games.

The New York Times reports that as part of the inquiry, the FBI interviewed nine people, and The Post reports that it could confirm interviews with only six people. It appears clear that the FBI did interview Mark Judge, who was named by Christine Blasey Ford as an accomplice in the alleged sexual attack; Patrick Smyth and Leland Keyser, who may have been present downstairs; Chris Garrett, who may have dated Ford at one point; and Tim Gaudette, whose house was the site of a July 1982 gathering noted on Kavanaugh’s calendar.

Here’s a list of the people who we know have not been interviewed:

A suitemate of Kavanaugh’s has now told the New Yorker he remembers hearing at the time about the incident Deborah Ramirez has recounted. Ramirez, who has been interviewed, had claimed that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her during a dorm party at Yale. The suitemate, Kenneth G. Appold, now says he is “one-hundred-per-cent certain” that he was told the culprit was Kavanaugh. He does say he never discussed this with Ramirez, but he claims an eyewitness described the episode to him at the time. Appold has tried to share this story with the FBI, but there’s no indication the FBI is willing to hear from him.
A classmate of Kavanaugh’s at Georgetown Prep now strongly challenges one of Kavanaugh’s assertions under oath. The person told the New Yorker that he heard Kavanaugh talk repeatedly about Renate Dolphin as someone “that everyone passed around for sex” (the witness’ words), and even heard Kavanaugh singing a rhyme that included the words “you wanna get laid, you can make it with REE-NATE.” Kavanaugh (and many others) described themselves in their yearbook as a “Renate Alumnius,” but Kavanaugh has denied under oath that this was a sexual reference, claiming, ludicrously, that it was intended to show “affection.”
This classmate is not named by the New Yorker. But he put his name on a statement to the FBI and Judiciary Committee that makes this claim, and he is prepared to talk to the FBI. There is no indication this happened.
James Roche, one of Kavanaugh’s roommates at Yale, has written a piece for Slate that claims Kavanaugh lied under oath about his use of slang and his drinking. Roche claims that Kavanaugh “regularly” blacked out. Roche has offered to talk to the FBI, but there’s no indication this happened.
Roche also pointedly added of Kavanaugh: “He said that ‘boofing’ was farting and the ‘Devil’s Triangle’ was a drinking game. ‘Boofing’ and ‘Devil’s Triangle’ are sexual references. I know this because I heard Brett and his friends using these terms on multiple occasions.” Roche concluded that Kavanaugh “has demonstrated a willingness to be untruthful under oath about easily verified information.”
NBC News reports that the FBI has not contacted dozens of people who could potentially corroborate the allegations against Kavanaugh or testify to his behavior at the time. This includes many people who knew either Ford or Ramirez at the time, and people who actually approached the FBI offering information.
The Post reports that Ramirez’s lawyers provided the FBI with a list of more than 20 people who might have relevant information, but “as of Wednesday, Ramirez’s team had no indication that the bureau had interviewed any of them.”
Blasey Ford’s legal team today put out a list of additional people who have not been contacted by the FBI, some of whom were prepared to corroborate that she had in the past discussed being the victim of a sexual assault by a federal judge.
Neither Ford nor Kavanaugh have been interviewed by the FBI. As the Brookings Institution’s Susan Hennessey points out: “It is inconceivable they could close a real investigation without re-interviewing Kavanaugh.”
We’ll have to wait to hear from individual senators to learn what the FBI findings, such as they are, tell us about the sexual assault allegations. But whatever that is to be, are the undecided senators — Republicans Jeff Flake, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, and Democrats Joe Manchin and Heidi Heitkamp — really going to brush off all these new claims, and the restrictions the White House placed on the FBI, lightly?

Kavanaugh’s bad-faith defenders have tried to frame the question about Kavanaugh’s drinking as: Are you really saying his youthful excesses are disqualifying? True, many of those excesses are trivial. But that’s not the right question. Rather, it’s whether Kavanaugh has shown a level of candor in the present about all this stuff (never mind the angry partisanship and openly displayed contempt for the critical role that opposition lawmakers play in this process) that we expect in a Supreme Court justice.

Kavanaugh defenders who have addressed that question point out that he admitted to drinking “too many beers” at times and to doing things that now leave him “cringing.” But this doesn’t get Kavanaugh off that particular hook: All of this new information, on top of other things we’ve already learned, credibly indicate that he blatantly falsified multiple aspects of his conduct in a highly specific way. An admission of general cringeworthiness doesn’t mitigate that. Undecided senators need to decide whether Kavanaugh has really demonstrated the integrity — and respect for the vetting process — that this position, with all the influence it wields over American life, and all the judiciousness and deliberative qualities we expect from those on the high court, demands.

Hundreds of law professors have now added their names to a letter arguing that he has not. And then there’s the process itself. When Flake courageously insisted on a reopened FBI inquiry, he stated that this was necessary to prevent the country from tearing itself apart. The threshold for Flake, then, is that treating these allegations with a seriousness of purpose commensurate with the gravity that millions of Americans across the country accord to sexual assault — many of them being survivors themselves — is the necessary precondition for healing the country, and thus for getting his vote. In this, he was joined by Collins and Murkowski.

But given everything we’ve seen so far — and given what we now are learning — about this process, can any of these undecided senators really claim with a straight face that this standard has been met? If not, how can they vote for Kavanaugh, without betraying their own declared standard to be a lie?

F.B.I. Review of Kavanaugh Was Limited From the Start
Oct. 5, 2018

President Trump consulted Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel, on the F.B.I. investigation into sexual assault allegations against Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh.Erin Schaff for The New York Times
WASHINGTON — An exasperated President Trump picked up the phone to call the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, last Sunday. Tell the F.B.I. they can investigate anything, he told Mr. McGahn, because we need the critics to stop.

Not so fast, Mr. McGahn said.

Mr. McGahn, according to people familiar with the conversation, told the president that even though the White House was facing a storm of condemnation for limiting the F.B.I. background check into sexual misconduct allegations against Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, a wide-ranging inquiry like some Democrats were demanding — and Mr. Trump was suggesting — would be potentially disastrous for Judge Kavanaugh’s chances of confirmation to the Supreme Court.

It would also go far beyond the F.B.I.’s usual “supplemental background investigation,” which is, by definition, narrow in scope.

The White House could not legally order the F.B.I. to rummage indiscriminately through someone’s life, Mr. McGahn told the president. And without a criminal investigation to pursue, agents could not use search warrants and subpoenas to try to get at the truth.

Mr. Trump backed down, although he said publicly the next day that the F.B.I. “should interview anybody that they want within reason.” But the episode on Sunday was further evidence of the confusion, including on the part of the president, about what would happen after Senator Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona, forced a one-week delay in the confirmation vote of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court by calling for a new F.B.I. investigation.

From the start, there were different expectations. Democrats hoped for a full investigation into the allegations, even as they were skeptical that one would occur and angrily said on Friday that the White House had quashed it. In all, 10 people were interviewed, and an 11th declined to cooperate.

But the F.B.I. did not interview the two people at the center — Judge Kavanaugh and his main accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.

Television reporters at the White House on Thursday as the F.B.I. report was made available to Senators on Capitol Hill.T.J. Kirkpatrick for The New York Times
Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York, declared the F.B.I. efforts to be “a whitewash” and vowed to open a new investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations if Democrats take control of the House in November’s elections.

“We have to assure the American people either that it was a fair process and that the new justice did not commit perjury, did not do these terrible things,” Mr. Nadler said.

But White House and former F.B.I. officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the inquiry, said the weeklong examination of the charges against Judge Kavanaugh was similar to the many previous times that the bureau has been asked to update a background check of a nominee to account for new information.

People familiar with the process say the White House is always in charge of background checks and can limit the scope of the questions F.B.I. agents can ask and who they can interview.

In the case of Judge Kavanaugh, Mr. McGahn instructed the F.B.I. to do an additional background check focused exclusively on the sexual misconduct charges leveled by three women.

In talking with Republican senators, White House officials said, it became clear to Mr. McGahn that there were four people whom senators wanted to be interviewed: Deborah Ramirez, who alleged that Judge Kavanaugh exposed himself to her during a college party; Mark Judge, a high school friend who was said to have witnessed an assault by Judge Kavanaugh on Christine Blasey Ford at a high school party; and two other friends who Dr. Blasey said were at that party, P.J. Smyth and Leland Keyser.

Late Friday, Dr. Blasey’s legal team sharply criticized the inquiry and said in a statement that “an F.B.I. investigation that did not include interviews of Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh is not a meaningful investigation in any sense of the word.”

The goal of the inquiry, White House officials said, was to look for witnesses who had firsthand accounts of sexual misconduct. The inquiry would not include questions about whether Judge Kavanaugh was frequently drunk or had been misleading in his Senate testimony.

Armed with that list, F.B.I. agents began conducting the interviews.

The White House was kept informed as the agents did their work, with summaries of the interviews — known as “Form 302s” — sent to the White House as they were completed.

Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, arrived at a secure room to view the single copy of the F.B.I. report on Capitol Hill on Thursday.Erin Schaff for The New York Times
Officials said that in a typical supplemental background check inquiry, agents would be required to ask the White House for permission to expand beyond the initial list of interview subjects.

But they insisted that the F.B.I. was not required to do that in the case of the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh. Over the course of the week, they said, agents decided to add a handful of other interviews to the inquiry.

According to a list distributed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, F.B.I. agents also interviewed Timothy Gaudette and Christopher Garrett, two high school friends of Judge Kavanaugh who were listed in the judge’s 1982 calendar as having attended a high school party. In addition, agents interviewed a lawyer of one of the friends.

Agents also interviewed two potential eyewitnesses to the episode alleged by Ms. Ramirez, as well as one of her close friends. The F.B.I. did not identify the three, but two of them were Kevin Genda and Karen Yarasavage, who are now married and knew Ms. Ramirez and Mr. Kavanaugh in college, according to a lawyer briefed on the matter. Mr. Genda and Ms. Yarasavage were each interviewed for more than two hours, according to the lawyer. And although Mr. Genda was viewed as a potential witness to the episode, it is not clear whether their statements offered any support for Ms. Ramirez’s account.

In addition, the F.B.I. agents collected written statements that had been submitted to them from other people, officials said. Those statements were also sent to the White House and forwarded to the Senate Judiciary Committee, officials said.

The contents of the interviews have not been made public. Early Thursday, the White House sent the summaries of the interviews to the Judiciary Committee, which made them available to senators.

White House officials insisted that neither Mr. McGahn nor any other West Wing lawyer prohibited the F.B.I. from interviewing them. But some former law enforcement experts said it was an odd decision not to include the two people at the center of the controversy.

Robert Cromwell, a former F.B.I. agent who oversaw sensitive background investigations of political appointees, doubted that agents decided not to interview Dr. Blasey and Mr. Kavanaugh on their own.

“I don’t think that it was in the parameters of the request,” he said. “That’s what I would assume. It would be frustrating as an investigator. The nature of investigators is to get to the bottom line. You’d want to talk to both of them.”

There was no real investigation

But you certainly know that already....why you are pretending not to confuses me ...you obviously read every single word I post

As is standard operating procedure the FBI does the 302 reports. They aren't looking for conspiracies or doing criminal investigations. As you hear when listening to many prosecutors who have been interviewed post judicial committee testimony, they say there was nothing to go on. Perhaps if we had a better police state everyone could be tracked better so that when political "investigations" are necessary the fascist regime in power at the time could more easily dig deep enough so that each and every citizen could be locked for something. If not excessive beer drinking then, improperly filling out tax returns, smashing a neighbors pumpkin post Halloween or spitting a wad of gum on a roadside. We're all criminals for something as long as there enough laws.

You're funny SLAD...did you forget to highlight that quote in green? I hardly read most of your stuff. Sometimes you do post good stuff, but who has time for all that? I did enjoy the dairy farm story in the Russiagate thread. That was mildly interesting, nice to see long form reportage even if it was a little slow to start. It was interesting to me having grown up in rural America and working side-by-side with a lot of migrant workers during the summer. I got to see how they were treated, how much they got paid and the living conditions.
