prominent Democrats, Trump critics

does it matter if the bombs were just hoaxes?....SOME OF THEM WERE DEFINITELY NOT HOAXES

THIS IS AN ACT OF TERRORISM

10 packages found so far ...two found just this morning

Jim Cavanaugh says they were intended to be working devices.

A mass assassination attempt this week: 2 former Presidents; 2 former First Ladies; a former AG; a Holocaust survivor turned pro-democracy advocate; former CIA Director John Brennan; a Congresswoman; the news enemy of trump CNN......and now this morning a bomb at Robert DeNiro's restaurant. ....and now a former Vice President Joe Biden

It's all fun and games until someone gets their face blown off

In 2016, Trump said Hillary Clinton’s secret service should stop protecting her so we could “see what happens to her.”

He also suggested - maybe, just maybe - the “Second Amendment people” should do something about her if she were to get elected President.

Rhetoric, Mobs and Terror
The explosive devices were released into a toxic atmosphere created by Trump.

There is no way to consider the explosive devices sent to prominent Democrats and the CNN offices and not recall that Donald Trump himself has created a toxic environment by openly targeting many of these very people and entities in his overheated, overwrought rhetoric.

This is not to say that there is an explicit link between the president’s rhetoric and the bombs. There is no way to know that at this point. We don’t even know yet who’s responsible for the bombs.

But we can say without equivocation that Trump’s stoking of fear and riling of anger is deeply problematic and indeed dangerous.

Trump doesn’t operate on an intellectual plane, but an emotional one, and the emotions he has learned to manipulate in politics are the darker ones.

He learned that if you tap into people’s anger — if you can articulate it and vent it, repackage it and glamorize it — their gratitude and appreciation will be expressed as loyalty and adulation.

They will forsake their morals and principles.

They will forgive your foibles.

They will defend you to the death.

Trump said to these people that their enemies were his enemies. Everyone they saw as a threat to their cultural heritage, societal dominance and personal privilege — Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants, liberals in general — he would attack on their behalf.

Ever the projectionist, Trump repeatedly encouraged violence at his campaign rallies and has recently taken to casting Democrats as a mob. In fact, his supporters are the mob.

In the movie “Gladiator,” a senator says of the new emperor:

“I think he knows what Rome is. Rome is the mob. Conjure magic for them and they’ll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they’ll roar. The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the Senate, it’s the sand of the Colosseum. He’ll bring them death — and they will love him for it.”

Trump understands this, intuitively. He is not a grand strategist, but an irrational man who rose in an era of irrationality. Politics is not always about the elevation of the best candidate. Indeed, I would argue that it rarely elevates the best. But it always rewards the person who is best suited and positioned for the moment.

In that way, Trump’s hatred, racism, insecurity, anti-intellectualism and grudge against the elite society that had always disdained him was perfectly suited for conservatives who were entertaining the same notions but had no one to openly champion their intolerance with effrontery.

On Monday in Houston, Trump was again whipping a rally crowd into a fear frenzy with his dystopian vision of America. He said:

“Democrat immigration policies allow poisonous drugs and MS-13 to pour into our country. And Democrat sanctuary cities release violent criminals from jail and straight into your neighborhoods.”

As the audience chanted, “CNN sucks,” he said, “Don’t worry. I don’t like them either, O.K.?” He added:

“Do you know how the caravan started? Does everybody know what this means? I think the Democrats had something to do with it.”

There is no proof that the caravan of Honduran migrants traveling through Mexico toward the United States was instigated by the Democrats, and the claim is ridiculous on its face. He continued:

“So as the caravan — and, look, that is an assault on our country. That’s an assault. And in that caravan you have some very bad people. You have some very bad people. And we can’t let that happen to our country.”

There is no proof that there are “very bad people” in the caravan, and it is more than a thousand miles away from our border.

He said: “The Democrats have launched an assault on the sovereignty of our country, the security of our nation, and the safety of every single American.”

He said:

“The Democrats want to replace freedom with socialism. They want to replace Texas values with Nancy Pelosi values. And they want to replace the rule of law with the rule of the mob. That’s what is happening. And the Democrats would rather destroy American communities than defend America’s borders.”

He also said: “A future under Democratic mob rule would be a total catastrophe.”

As ever, there were chants of “lock her up” with respect to Hillary Clinton.

And he said this:

“You know what I am? I’m a nationalist, O.K.? I’m a nationalist. Nationalist. Nothing — use that word. Use that word.”

This is all from just one rally. He has held scores of them.

This is the language in the air. This is the rhetorical backdrop as we await an investigation and answers about who sent bombs to Democrats and the CNN offices.

This is the madness, fear-mongering and mendacity that must end. But it won’t. This is all Trump has. It is who he is. Without it, he doesn’t really exist.

Trump is inciting violence, and now we have a MAGAbomber

We are not at war with them, but they’re at war with us and somebody is going to die

Lucian K. Truscott IV
I’ve been writing about Donald Trump for more than two years. I wrote a couple of pieces on his campaign for the Village Voice in 2016. I started this column in the spring of 2017. I haven’t kept an exact count, but I’ll bet I’ve written more than a hundred columns on him.

But not until now have I taken seriously the smattering of death threats I’ve received. They have been of what you would call the “thinly veiled” variety. One recent tweet warned me to “be careful what you wish for because it might not be good for your health.” Another tweet called me a traitor and said I would get “what’s coming to you.” Both threats were made using anonymous Twitter handles. Both were deleted by the senders soon after I saw them.

I didn’t bother taking a screenshot of either tweet, nor did I report them to Twitter because I didn’t take them seriously. I’ve gotten death threats of the not-thinly-veiled sort before — over a hundred of them by anonymous email and regular mail at the time I first took my Hemings/Jefferson cousins to the family reunion at Monticello back in 1999. They flooded through my mail slot and into my email inbox for about two months, then they stopped.

Click for Sound
I understood back then that death threats were made by chickenshit men who would never act on them. A cousin of mine in law enforcement in Texas told me that I didn’t need to worry about the ones who send you death threats. “It’s the ones who don’t send warnings who should concern you,” he said.

Whoever sent the working explosive devices to Barack Obama, George Soros, Bill and Hillary Clinton, John Brennan c/o CNN, and Eric Holder didn’t bother making threats. He — you can count on the bomber being a man — just made the bombs and mailed them. He sent them to six people who are enthusiastic opponents of Donald Trump. All six of the intended victims have been targets of Trump during the midterm election campaign either at his rallies or in tweets, or both.

Trump has stood before rallies of red hat wearing supporters and basked in their chants of “LOCK HER UP!” whenever he has mentioned Hillary Clinton.

He has slammed former President Bill Clinton, her husband. He has held former President Obama in contempt since he spent years making the false claim that Obama was not a citizen of the United States.

He recently re-tweeted a video posted by a right-wing Republican congressman from Florida, Matt Gaetz, allegedly “proving” that George Soros paid thousands of migrants in Honduras to join the Central American caravan and “storm” the United States. The video posted by Gaetz has been shown to have been shot in Guatemala, not Honduras, and there is no evidence that the money being shown being passed to migrants by local people came from Soros or his Open Society Foundations. Soros has denied the charge.

Trump has also taken shots at Eric Holder, the former Attorney General in the administration of Barack Obama. On the anniversary of 9/11; In an apparent reference to his unhappiness with the current attorney general, Jeff Sessions, Trump re-tweeted a quote by Fox News host Lou Dobbs:

Holder is said to be a thinking of mounting a campaign for the presidency in 2020. Trump has taken particular umbrage at the frequent appearances by former CIA Director John Brennan as a commentator on the Russia investigation, and he recently yanked his Top Secret security clearance. In an August tweet, Trump called Brennan a “loudmouth, partisan, political hack.”

Trump’s rhetoric has gotten more violent as his lies have increased in frequency. You practically can’t turn on the TV these days without seeing a clip of Trump at one of his rallies screaming at the top of his lungs about one Democrat or another. At a rally in July, Trump charged that “Obama founded ISIS! I would say the co-founder was crooked Hillary Clinton!”

Now Trump’s frequent attacks on these prominent figures in the Democratic Party have had consequences. Some lunatic follower of his out there has taken it upon himself to follow through on Trump’s rhetorical attacks with a real attack. He sent them fully functioning pipe bombs.

Nobody has even bothered to keep count of the number of times Trump has called the news media “the enemy of the people.” He makes the charge so regularly it has become like background noise.

Until now.

Trump’s language about the media is not background noise at the CNN headquarters in New York City, which as I write this has been evacuated and surrounded by NYPD and FBI bomb squads.

Trump’s “lock her up” chants at his rallies aren’t background noise in Chappaqua, New York, at the home of Bill and Hillary Clinton, where the local law enforcement, the FBI, and the Secret Service have surrounded the Clinton home.

Trump’s charge that Obama “founded ISIS” isn’t background noise at home of the Obamas in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington D.C., also surrounded by FBI and Secret Service agents and bomb squads.

The family of George Soros clearly doesn’t consider Trump’s rhetoric about him as background noise, with their Bedford home in New York’s Westchester County surrounded by FBI bomb techs and local law enforcement.

Eric Holder and his family will be paying closer attention to Trump’s rhetoric about him now that he has also been a Target of the Trump bomber.

And now comes word that “a suspicious package” addressed to the office of California Congresswoman Maxine Waters was intercepted on Capitol Hill. Trump has repeatedly belittled Waters “low IQ” and worse.

There is obviously a big, big difference between receiving a death threat and having a pipe bomb sent to you in the mail. A threat is meant to scare you, intimidate you. A bomb in the mail is attempted murder.

None of the chickenshit little men who have made death threats against me have carried through on them. As it happens, however, I have a pretty good idea what it feels like to be the target of a bomb. It happened when I was in Iraq in 2003. I was with an Infantry company in Hamam Al-Alil, an outlaw town about five miles south of Mosul along the Tigris River. The place was crawling with insurgents. The company I was with had set up camp in a building that had been part of Iraq’s main agricultural college on the outskirts of town. They walled off the building and surrounded it with barbed wire, and soldiers manning multiple machine guns kept watch twenty-four hours a day. Still the place was regularly mortared and shot at with small arms by insurgents.

One day, the company commander had a meeting with the mayor of Hamam Al-Alil in his office in town, so he mounted up a convoy of three unarmored Humvees and drove out of the compound. I was in the lead vehicle with the company commander. We had just passed through the gates to the agricultural college, when an IED exploded behind us. The bomb was detonated too late to hit any of our vehicles directly, but the last vehicle in the convoy took shrapnel, and the machine-gunner, standing in the back of the Humvee’s truck bed, was thrown from the vehicle by the blast and badly shaken up.

The blast was deafening, and wee could feel the shockwave 150 feet away. The company commander ordered the convoy to stop and everyone jumped out of the vehicles, M-16s at the ready. The edge of the road behind the last vehicle was deeply cratered. Shrapnel, which turned out to be from an American-made 155 Howitzer round used to construct the IED, was everywhere. It was a miracle that no one was killed.

I came unnervingly close to being blown up by a suicide bomber in Tel Aviv in 1974 when I was over there writing about terrorism for the Village Voice. The bomber jumped from the balcony of a movie theater into the orchestra seats just before a friend and I arrived to see the movie. More than a dozen people were killed and dozens more injured. The theater was covered in blood and body parts.

You could call the bombs sent today to the Obamas and the Clintons and the others a terrorist act, but it’s also attempted murder. The only difference between those bombs and what we would call terrorism is the politics involved. All of those targeted by the bomber or bombers are prominent Democrats. All of them have been targeted recently by Donald Trump in his rhetoric at rallies and in his tweets.

Trump is blaming Democrats for ISIS, for the so-called “caravan” in Central America, for anything he can think of. He tells lie after lie, and someone out there among his supporters is listening to him. Trump is not just an inveterate liar and a bellicose buffoon with a yellow rat on his head.

Trump has radicalized his base. He is inciting terrorism. He is an accomplice to attempted murder.

Someone is going to be killed before this is over.

Federal agents are investigating bomb scares targeting prominent Democrats, as well as CNN.

Amna Nawaz reports on the political discourse that may have inspired it, as well as President Trump’s response. Hari Sreenivasan reports from New York. Judy Woodruff discusses with Juliette Kayyem, who worked in the Department of Homeland Security under Obama, and Joseph Funk, former Secret Service.
Read the Full Transcript
Judy Woodruff:

Federal agents are working tonight to get to the bottom of bomb scares up and down the East Coast. The targets are mainly prominent Democrats, as well as CNN, and locations range from New York to Florida.

Amna Nawaz begins our coverage.
Amna Nawaz:

After a string of explosive devices were sent to two former Democratic presidents, senior officials and a high-profile party donor, President Trump today pledged action. He promised the full resources of the government to bring to justice those responsible for what he called despicable acts.
President Donald Trump:

In these times, we have to unify. We have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message, that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.
Amna Nawaz:

Authorities say they were able to safely remove or detonate the devices, sent in packages targeting some of the biggest names in the Democratic Party.

The discoveries unfolded at a dizzying pace. Earlier this week, a suspicious package was found in the mailbox at the compound of billionaire George Soros in Bedford, New York. Last night, a similar package was found headed to the home of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Chappaqua, New York, early this morning, another one, this time sent to the Washington, D.C., home of former President Barack Obama, a few hours later, a package addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan sent to the CNN office in New York City.

That package triggered an alarm to evacuate the building.

(ALARM BLARING)
Jim Sciutto:

That sounds like a fire alarm here. We will keep you posted on that.
Amna Nawaz:

Forcing journalists to continue reporting from the streets outside their building.
Kate Bolduan:

Shelter in place.
Amna Nawaz:

ABC News later tweeted a photo of what it said was the bomb sent to CNN, recovered by the New York Police Department.

Authorities say all of the packages contained a pipe bomb, and they suspect the same person or people could be behind the attacks. An NYPD official and New York's governor briefed the public.
John Miller:

It appears that an individual or individuals sent out multiple similar packages.
Governor Andrew Cuomo:

There is a number of devices. And there's a pattern apparently to the number of devices. We wouldn't be at all surprised if more devices show up.
Amna Nawaz:

This afternoon, the South Florida offices of Congresswoman and former Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz were evacuated after a suspicious package arrived addressed to former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Another suspicious package addressed to Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California was intercepted at a Maryland mail facility. Republican leaders quickly sent out messages condemning the attacks. Speaker Paul Ryan called them reprehensible. Senator Marco Rubio labeled them an attack on America.

And Vice President Pence spoke out at a campaign event in Pennsylvania.
Vice President Mike Pence:

We condemn these attempted acts of violence in the strongest possible terms. These cowardly acts are despicable and have no place in American society.
Amna Nawaz:

The FBI is now leading the investigation into the seemingly partisan attacks. But they come at a time of escalating, ugly political rhetoric, and deep divisions in the country, divisions many accuse the president himself of stoking.

The president continues to publicly attack Secretary Clinton, encouraging rally chants of "Lock her up."
CROWD:

Lock her up!
Amna Nawaz:

He's insulted former CIA Director Brennan as a "loudmouth, partisan, political hack" and threatened to revoke his security clearance.

And a president who often derides the press has singled out CNN for particular scorn.
Crowd:

CNN sucks! CNN sucks!
Amna Nawaz:

Soros, a longtime donor to progressive causes around the world, has also long been a target of conservatives and the far right. One recent film endorsed by the president's son Donald Jr. went so far as to label Soros a Nazi collaborator.

The billionaire investor survived the Nazi occupation in his native Hungary as a child.

At a campaign rally in Florida today, a somber Hillary Clinton said she worried for the direction of the country.
Hillary Clinton:

But it is a troubling time, isn't it? And it's a time of deep divisions, and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together.
Amna Nawaz:

For the "PBS NewsHour," I'm Amna Nawaz.
Judy Woodruff:

As of this hour, neither the FBI nor other law enforcement officials have provided any motive for the pipe bombs.

Late today, CNN president Jeff Zucker criticized the president — quote — "The president and especially the White House press secretary," he said, "should understand their words matter. Thus far," he added, "they have shown no comprehension of that."

Let's check back into New York City this evening about this tense and sometimes confusing day.

Hari Sreenivasan is there for us. He joins us from Columbus Circle on the West Side of Manhattan.

Hari, you standing in front of the Time Warner building. What's the situation there now?
Hari Sreenivasan:

Good evening. Judy.

It's pretty much back to normal on a cold fall day. There are police cars outside, but there's always police cars outside here. There's a lot of sat trucks, or satellite trucks. There's also satellite trucks here because CNN is based just over my shoulder.

So here, at this point, there are reporters outnumbering police. There's a lot of people that are going about their day, trying to take in the holidays, because this is one of the tourist spots right here on the corner of Central Park.
Judy Woodruff:

Hari, there were reports today of confusion around New York City beyond Time Warner. What do we know about that?
Hari Sreenivasan:

Interestingly, on my way here, this is a few hours after the initial event that occurred, my phone was still going off in the subway, because authorities here tried to send the message out through an emergency text alert system for anybody that was in the area, including some colleagues of mine whose children were about two, three blocks away from here.

Everybody got a notice to shelter in place. But that little alert didn't seem to turn off very quickly. So, even hours after the fact, as everyone in the subway car entered whatever that area was, all of our phones went off at the same time.

And, at that point, that led to greater confusion, because some people who hadn't seen the news, or even if they had, they wondered whether there was something new that they should be concerned about.
Judy Woodruff:

Can only imagine what that must have been like.

Hari Sreenivasan, reporting for us tonight from New York, thanks, Hari.

We now turn to two guests with extensive experience dealing with security-related issues.

Juliette Kayyem served in the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration. She has focused on domestic and international terrorism throughout her career. She's now a lecturer at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Joseph Funk was a member of the U.S. Secret Service for 21 years, where he served on the protection details of former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He's now the senior vice president of TorchStone Global. It's a security advisory firm.

And we welcome both of you to the program.

Joseph Funk, to you first.

What do you make of this? Can you compare what's happened today up and down the East Coast to anything else you have seen in your career?
Joseph Funk:

Well, Judy, good evening. It's a pleasure to be here.

The events of today, I cannot remember of any concerted effort in my experience, other than some of the bombing campaigns that have happened in New York in the early 1900s, the Weather Underground, the FALN.

But to target political leaders like we see today, no, this is something that I believe is new in the annals of the Secret Service.
Judy Woodruff:

Juliette Kayyem, what about you? Is there anything you can compare it to?
Juliette Kayyem:

Not really.

I mean, I agree with Joseph. You know, the fact it wasn't successful is somewhat besides the point. Someone or a group of people tried to hurt or actually kill the senior members of one of the political parties.

And we haven't really seen that in such a concerted effort like this ever, I think, in the United States. And so that is why, you know, the FBI is obviously taking it quite seriously.

I will say, as Joseph certainly knows, there is good news here, which is the system did work. I'm reluctant to use those words, but to the extent that the Secret Service had these layered defenses to protect in particular our former presidents really was beneficial for the outcome.
Judy Woodruff:

Thank God for that.

Joseph Funk, tell us what you expect the investigation right now entails. What do you think they're focusing on?
Joseph Funk:

Well, to echo Juliette's remarks, the system did work. The multiple layers of security did work.

But in a much broader concept, this probably — if an event like this is going to happen, the best place to happen is New York. The experience, the expertise of the NYPD is unmatched. And the FBI has a very robust presence, and probably the lead, the flagship office of the FBI office is New York.

So if we are going to see events like this happen, it's probably best that it happens in an area that has this highest level of law enforcement.

As far as proceeding, the fact that the bombs were undetonated, were received in whole, I think, is going to lead to a cache of valuable investigative leads, and I would imagine a pretty rapid conclusion to this — I hate to make predictions, but with the bulk of evidence seized and the experience of the NYPD, the ATF, and the FBI, I think it will lead to a conclusion probably soon than later.
Judy Woodruff:

Juliette Kayyem, are you equally optimistic that, given what's here, that it will be sooner rather than later before we know what was behind this?
Juliette Kayyem:

I do.

You know, I don't want to predict either, and we heard a lot about the Unabomber, the anthrax attacks and other attacks that utilized the mail system. Today is so much — so different, just because the technology is so — between the sort of digital footprints that may be found, you know, video cameras, purchases online that are going to be followed with someone buying a lot of one commodity that we should be worried about, as well as, you know, the physical aspect of having the bomb, which may have fingerprints, which is going to lead to more investigative clues, both of those are very beneficial for this investigation.

The last thing, though, is the breadth of this — of these — the delivery of these devices, each of those devices had a certain number of vulnerabilities that are going to be exposed by a good law enforcement case.

There's couriers involved, there's purchases involved, there's different states. And so I think, in some ways, because this was so big, that the vulnerabilities of trying to plan this may be easily exposed and solved by law enforcement.

This is not the 1980s, where we were dealing with, you know, similar-type attacks, or even early 2000s.
Judy Woodruff:

Joseph Funk, we did hear in the reporting, Amna Nawaz's reporting earlier, that they are focusing on one or a group of individuals who would be behind all of these attacks potentially.

Is there a type person who would try to pull off something like this? Clearly, we are in a very heated political environment right now.
Joseph Funk:

We are, Judy.

I really can't speak to motives. I would say incidents like this are probably — are usually traced back to a loner. One of the positive aspects prior to sending a device through the mail, many times, these people who commit these acts are letter writers.

The Secret Service will have a vast database of letters that have been written. Comparing those letters with some of the packages sent today may help to identify a suspect.

That being said, I would expect this investigation to take a lead into the political arena that we are in nowadays. Rhetoric does have results on both sides.
Judy Woodruff:

Juliette Kayyem, picking up on that, how — is it — I guess my question is, you know, we just heard Joseph say that the person who did this is likely to have already expressed himself or herself some way out there, whether it's social media, writing letters.

So, how does — how does that affect the investigation here?
Juliette Kayyem:

So, it will be part of both the clues of identifying the person and then also getting to motive.

So, you know, obviously, Joseph and I want to be careful about sort of about, you know, making too many conclusions, but I will say this. A sophisticated law enforcement effort right now will take — will look at who were the targets of the bombings and make a rational conclusion.

Simply because it's a political conclusion doesn't mean that it's wrong. And so, you know, we shouldn't let being careful, you know, sort of blind us from being smart, which is essentially, someone attacked Democrats, or CNN, which is aligned with Democrats, or George Soros, And so you are going to start with a position of someone who do not — doesn't like those institutions and those individuals.

And that would be generally someone who's not a Democrat or not left-leaning. That's not a political statement. It's just obviously law enforcement at this stage.
Judy Woodruff:

Well, we're just on the first night after this has happened, at least most of these bombing attempts. And we're going to continue to watch it very closely, as I know the two of you will.

Juliette Kayyem and Joseph Funk, thank you both.

Alexander Soros: The Hate That Is Consuming Us

Bombs sent to my father, George Soros, and to former President Obama and Hillary Clinton are a result of our politics of demonizing opponents.

Oct. 24, 2018
By Alexander Soros

Mr. Soros is the deputy chairman of the Open Society Foundations.

A bomb was found in a mailbox outside the home of the billionaire George Soros, a frequent target of right-wing vitriol, on Monday.Simon Dawson/Bloomberg, via Getty Images
On Monday afternoon an explosive device was delivered to my father’s home north of New York City. An alert member of our staff recognized the threat and called the police. Fortunately, the authorities were able to detonate the device safely. On Wednesday, the Secret Service said it had intercepted similar devices sent to the offices of former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

We are all grateful that no one was injured, and grateful to those who kept us safe. But the incident was profoundly disturbing — as a threat not just to the safety of our family, neighbors, colleagues and friends, but also to the future of American democracy.

My family is no stranger to the hostilities of those who reject our philosophy, our politics and our very identity. My father grew up in the shadow of the Nazi regime in Hungary. My grandfather secured papers with false names so that they could survive the onslaught against Budapest’s Jews; he helped many others do the same. After the war, as the Communists took power, my father escaped to London, where he studied at the London School of Economics before embarking on what ultimately became a hugely successful career in finance.

But the lessons of his early life never left him. His biggest philanthropic endeavor, the Open Society Foundations, played a leading role in supporting the transition from Communism to more democratic societies in parts of the former Soviet Union and then expanded to protect democratic practices in existing democracies. My father acknowledges that his philanthropic work, while nonpartisan, is “political” in a broad sense: It seeks to support those who promote societies where everyone has a voice.

There is a long list of people who find that proposition unacceptable, and my father has faced plenty of attacks along the way, many dripping with the poison of anti-Semitism.

But something changed in 2016. Before that, the vitriol he faced was largely confined to the extremist fringes, among white supremacists and nationalists who sought to undermine the very foundations of democracy.

But with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, things got worse. White supremacists and anti-Semites like David Duke endorsed his campaign. Mr. Trump’s final TV ad famously featured my father; Janet Yellen, chairwoman of the Federal Reserve; and Lloyd Blankfein, chairman of Goldman Sachs — all of them Jewish — amid dog-whistle language about “special interests” and “global special interests.” A genie was let out of the bottle, which may take generations to put back in, and it wasn’t confined to the United States.

In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán launched an anti-Semitic poster campaign falsely accusing my father of wanting to flood Hungary with migrants. This included plastering my father’s face onto the floor of trams in Budapest so that people would walk on it, all to serve Mr. Orbán’s political agenda.

Now we have attempted bomb attacks. While the responsibility lies with the individual or individuals who sent these lethal devices to my family home and Mr. Obama’s and Ms. Clinton’s offices, I cannot see it divorced from the new normal of political demonization that plagues us today.

I am under no illusion that the hatred directed at us is unique. There are too many people in the United States and around the world who have felt the force of this malign spirit. It is now all too “normal” that people who speak their minds are routinely subjected to personal hostility, hateful messages on social media and death threats.

It is also all too normal that organizations doing important pro-democracy work face existential threats simply because they accept support from the foundations my father started. And all too normal that political leaders who swear an oath of office to protect all citizens instead pursue politics of division and hate.

We are far removed from the days when Senator John McCain rebuffed his own supporters during the 2008 election to patriotically defend his opponent, Mr. Obama — all because he believed that the health of our democracy was more important than his personal political gain.

We must find our way to a new political discourse that shuns the demonization of all political opponents. A first step would be to cast our ballots to reject those politicians cynically responsible for undermining the institutions of our democracy. And we must do it now, before it is too late.

This isn't fake news: CNN president Zucker blasts Trump for attacks on the media

The scathing statement came after the president commented about pipe bombs sent to Democratic leaders.

The president of CNN strongly criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for his anti-media rhetoric, just hours after the network discovered that a pipe bomb had been sent to its headquarters in New York.

"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media," Jeff Zucker, the president of CNN Worldwide, said in a statement. "The President, and especially the White House press secretary, should understand their words matter. Thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that."

The pipe bomb, which was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, via CNN, was one of several sent to several prominent Democratic political figures, including former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, former Attorney General Eric Holder and mega-donor George Soros.

The targeting of prominent Democrats had led to speculation that the perpetrator may have been inspired by Trump's frequent attacks on Democrats and the media.

Zucker's strongly worded statement seemed to accept that possibility as fact. Earlier Tuesday, longtime Hillary Clinton aide Philippe Reines also suggested that the White House needed to ask itself "how much Donald Trump is responsible for the climate where things like this happen," a question echoed by many pundits across cable news and social media.

Trump has frequently criticized CNN and other media organizations as "the fake news," and even going so far as to label them "the enemy" of the American people — a characterization that often draws hearty applause and boos directed at the press at his rallies.

Matt Dornic, a CNN spokesperson, noted that less than two hours after CNN evacuated its headquarters on Tuesday, the Trump campaign sent an email attacking CNN and calling on people "to give the media another wake-up call."

"In these times we have to unify, we have to come together," the president said before a bill-signing event, calling the mailings "abhorrent to everything we hold dear and sacred as Americans."

Trump did not mention the names of the political leaders targeted nor did he mention CNN.

AT&T, which recently acquired CNN through its purchase of Time Warner, has yet to issue a statement on today's incidents.

"Potentially destructive devices" sent to Clinton, Obama, CNN prompt massive response

"Suspicious packages" received at multiple locations this week "contain potentially destructive devices," the FBI said.
A package sent to actor Robert De Niro, a strong critic of President Trump, was being investigated Thursday morning, sources told CBS News.
Packages identified as of Wednesday were addressed to former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan, former Attorney General Eric Holder and liberal philanthropist George Soros.
All packages as of Wednesday had a return address of "Debbie Wasserman Shultz," the FBI said.
The package addressed to Brennan was sent to CNN's offices in New York City. It contained what appeared to be a live explosive device, and an envelope containing white powder.
A suspicious package addressed to Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was intercepted at a House mail facility, two sources told CBS News. Later Wednesday night, the LAPD said it's investigating another package found at a mail facility near Downtown Los Angeles.
A sprawling investigation unfolded Wednesday as authorities scrambled to respond to a series of suspicious packages. The Secret Service intercepted two packages that were addressed to former President Obama's home in Washington and Bill and Hillary Clinton's residence in Westchester County, New York.

Another package was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan at the New York City offices of CNN, prompting CNN's bureau and the Time Warner Center to evacuate.

A package that was originally addressed to former Attorney General Eric Holder didn't arrive at the address it was intended for and was rerouted to the return address on the label -- the Florida office of former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Crude but functional low-ordnance explosive devices found in at least two of the packages consisted of a pipe, wires and black powder, a law enforcement official told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

A similar suspicious package addressed to actor Robert De Niro was being checked out Thursday morning, sources told CBS News.

Package sent to De Niro investigated
CBS News has learned that a suspicious package was sent to actor Robert De Niro, a fierce critic of President Trump.

A law enforcement source tells CBS News that at roughly 5 a.m. Thursday, security personnel at Tribeca Productions called the New York Police Department about the package, which was addressed to De Niro.

The Bomb Squad responded, X-rayed the package and determined the device inside was similar to the ones sent to other prominent Democrats and seen in pictures the NYPD distributed Wednesday.

The package appears to be from same sender, the source says.

The NYPD says it removed the device. A source tells CBS News it was taken to the NYPD bomb disposal range.

Tribeca, a neighborhood in lower Manhattan, was the scene of intense police activity Thursday morning.

Biden home searched for suspicious packages
Police turned out in force in Greenville, Delaware at former Vice President Joe Biden's home Wednesday after packages with possible explosive devices were delivered to several top Democrats.

Police say they did a sweep of Biden's home and found no suspicious packages.

New Castle County Police searched the property and checked the surrounding area.

Biden also owns a home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It wasn't immediately known if that home was searched, as well.

New York investigators comb through surveillance cameras
Investigators in New York are working around the clock, poring over video from local business and other surveillance cameras in the area near the Time Warner Center in search of the courier who delivered what turned out to be a suspicious package to the building's mail room where CNN is located. They are also looking to see if anyone may be identified as possibly doing their own pre-surveillance of the building in the days leading up to the delivery of the device.

Investigators from the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force -- as well as bomb techs, agents from the FBI and ATF, and U.S. Secret Service - have been searching for clues or so-called "forensic digital footprints" that could lead them to the individual or individuals responsible.

The explosive devices did not blow up so investigators have a trove of potential evidence available to them. They will be able to find serial numbers and lot numbers on the devices' components which will help them determine the stores or where online the materials to make the bombing devices were purchased.

Investigators in New York are also reviewing license plate readers located at every bridge and tunnel crossing recording every vehicle entering or leaving Manhattan.

Packages were packed with shards of glass, AP reports
The Associated Press reports the devices sent to prominent Democrats and CNN were packed with shards of glass, according to a law enforcement official.

Tests have determined that a powder found inside an envelope delivered to CNN along with a pipe bomb was harmless, a law enforcement official tells CBS News.

Trump pledges to bring suspect(s) behind suspicious packages to justice

At a "Make America Great Again" rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, Wednesday night, President Trump said he will bring the suspect or suspects behind the recent string of suspicious packages to justice.

"My highest duty as you know as president is to keep America safe," he said, adding that the "federal government is conducting an aggressive investigation." He condemned threats of political violence as "an attack on our democracy itself," and called for "all sides to come together in peace and harmony."

Moments later, Mr. Trump also took the opportunity to criticize media coverage of politics.

"The media also has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories," he said, on the same day that a suspicious package was sent to CNN.

2nd package addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters found in Los Angeles

Local and federal authorities are investigating a suspicious package at a South Los Angeles mail facility Wed., Oct. 24, 2018, that was addressed to U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters. CBS NEWS
CBS News has confirmed the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a suspicious package, addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters, at the Los Angeles Central Mail facility near Downtown Los Angeles.

"While we determine its contents and origins the facility is being evacuated," LAPD said in a tweet.

This package appears to be similar to the ones found in New York and Washington, D.C.

LAPD said it is working with federal authorities such as the U.S. Postal Inspectors, FBI and ATF.

Investigators probe devices for clues
Multiple law enforcement sources say one of the bombs consisted of PVC tubing and used a digital clock connected to a small battery as a possible trigger device, CBS News' Jeff Pegues reports. Pyrotechnic powder was the explosive, and in order to keep it lightweight, glass was used as shrapnel.

Investigators think whoever put the device together was trying to keep the weight down so that they could put in a mailbox without having to appear at a post office for mailing.

The six packages were all similar in appearance. The large manila envelopes with six American flag "Forever" stamps will now be analyzed at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. Investigators will deconstruct them, looking to trace the origin of the wiring and the other components to see where and when they may have been purchased and by whom.

Packages sent to be opened in Quantico
The packages are being sent to the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, according to a press release by the FBI. A U.S. law enforcement official told CBS News' Andres Triay that all the bombs are going to the lab in Quantico because bomb technicians want to analyze the devices at the same lab.

Most of the packages have not been opened.

Security doubled at NYC bridges, tunnels, airports
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is directing state law enforcement to double security at locations including LaGuardia and JFK airports, as well as mass transit systems, bridges and tunnels.

He also said he is deploying 100 additional National Guard soldiers "out of an abundance of caution."

"Public safety is our number one priority, and we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of New Yorkers," he said in a statement.

FBI: Packages had a return address of "Debbie Wasserman Shultz"
The FBI says suspicious packages received between Monday and Wednesday at multiple locations in the New York and Washington, D.C., areas and Florida "contain potentially destructive devices."

"The packages were mailed in manila envelopes with bubble wrap interior," the FBI said in a statement. "The packages were affixed with computer-printed address labels and six Forever stamps. All packages had a return address of 'DEBBIE WASSERMAN SHULTZ' [sic] in Florida."

It said the packages were "similar" in their appearance, "as depicted in the below photograph." The FBI said addresses on the envelope were removed for privacy reasons:

The FBI said packages identified as of Wednesday were addressed to George Soros, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Obama, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Suspicious package removed from Wasserman Schultz’s office
The building that houses Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office in Sunrise, Florida, was evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious package arrived in the mail.

The package was removed safely from the building and taken to an FBI lab where it will be examined, CBS Miami reported.

The package was originally addressed to Eric Holder, but was sent to the wrong address and returned to the return address, the office of Wasserman Schultz.

Trump on suspicious packages: "We have to unify"
President Trump said Wednesday afternoon that "acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America." He said in these times "we have to unify."

Speaking at a White House event Wednesday, Mr. Trump said he's been briefed about the suspicious packages sent to several top Democrats.

"The full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation and bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice," he said. "We will spare no resources or expense in this effort."

He also said, "We're extremely angry, upset, unhappy about what we witnessed this morning and we will get to the bottom of it."

"The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority."

Watch his remarks below:

NYPD: Cuomo did not receive a package bomb
The New York City Police Department said a suspicious package at New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's office has been cleared by NYPD personnel and is unrelated to other devices.

Cuomo said earlier Wednesday that his Manhattan office had received a suspicious device.

Suspicious package to Rep. Maxine Waters intercepted
A suspicious package addressed to Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was intercepted at a House mail facility, two sources told CBS News. The name on the return address was Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Later on Wednesday, Waters issued a statement saying, "I have been informed by U.S. Capitol Police that my Washington, DC office was the target of a suspicious package that has been referred to the FBI. I am appreciative of the law enforcement entities who intercepted the package and are investigating this matter. I unequivocally condemn any and all acts of violence and terror."

Two sources said the package addressed to Waters is similar to the others intercepted in New York and Washington, D.C.

Hillary Clinton thanks Secret Service
Hillary Clinton said Wednesday at a Florida fundraiser: "We are fine thanks to the men and women of the Secret Service who intercepted the package addressed to us long before it made its way to our home."

"Everyday we are grateful for their service and commitment and obviously, never, never more than today," she said. "But it is a troubling time isn't it? And it's a time of deep divisions and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together."

Clinton was speaking at a Coral Gables fundraiser for Democratic congressional candidate Donna Shalala, a former health and human services secretary.

NYPD: Devices appear to be crude pipe bombs
John Miller, NYPD's chief of counterterrorism, said during a news conference Wednesday that the device sent to CNN's offices in New York appeared to be sent by the same individual who mailed devices to the homes of billionaire financier and liberal activist George Soros, Hillary Clinton and former President Obama.

Miller and FBI officials said the devices all appeared to be crude pipe bombs.

Miller said it began on Monday night with the device sent to Soros and that they're looking at the devices as a pattern.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would not be surprised if more devices are found.

"An act of terror"
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday: "The situation at the Time Warner Center was clearly an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and intimidate New Yorkers."

"But the people of this city have shown time and again that they stand up in the face of terror," he tweeted.

At a briefing near Manhattan's Time Warner Center, New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said "we will not allow these terrorist thugs to change the way we live our lives."

Package sent to CNN's offices contained device, white powder
The package sent to CNN's offices in New York contained what appeared to be a "live explosive device," said New York Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill. It also contained an envelope with white powder.

The package was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan at CNN. Since leaving government, Brennan appears on television, but he works as an analyst for NBC News.

The package was found in the building's mailroom. It was described as a pipe with wires and was sent through the U.S. Postal Service, CBS New York reported.

A photo obtained by CBS News shows the device and a package addressed to John Brennan. The return address was listed as Debbie Wasserman Schultz, although there is no reason to believe she actually sent the package.

Responses to packages by Trump administration, White House
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders condemned "the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton and other public figures."

"These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Sanders said in a statement Wednesday morning. "The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards."

Vice President Mike Pence said in a tweet this morning "We condemn the attempted attacks against fmr Pres Obama, the Clintons, @CNN & others. These cowardly actions are despicable & have no place in this Country."

President Trump retweeted the vice president's tweet, adding "I agree wholeheartedly!"

Suspicious package at CNN's New York offices at Time Warner Center
10:26 a.m.: The New York City Police Department is investigating a suspicious package at the Time Warner Center in New York City, the NYPD confirmed to CBS News. The NYPD didn't say to whom the package was addressed.

Shortly after news of the initial packages emerged Wednesday morning, authorities hastily evacuated the Time Warner Center in midtown Manhattan, where CNN's New York offices are located. Its anchors were live on the air when an alarm rang out and members of the NYPD responded to the scene.

Police promptly shut down the area around the building. CNN said its bureau in the Time Warner Center was evacuated "as a precaution."

An NYPD bomb squad was on its way to the Time Warner Center Wednesday morning and the entire building was evacuated. Areas around the building were also being evacuated.

CNN reported the package discovered in New York was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, citing city and local law enforcement sources. At noon, CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement that police had safely removed the package from the building.

Suspicious packages sent to homes of President Obama, Hillary Clinton
10 a.m. The Secret Service said it has intercepted suspicious packages addressed to former President Obama's home in Washington and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's residence in Westchester County, New York. Another package discovered in New York prompted the evacuation of CNN's offices at the Time Warner Center and an enormous police response that shut down the area around the building.

A law enforcement source told CBS News the device addressed to the Clinton home was similar to an explosive device sent to the home of billionaire financier George Soros that was discovered on Monday. The source said the package addressed to the Clinton home was sent through the U.S. Postal Service. Clinton's home is about eight miles from Soros' residence in the suburbs north of New York City.

In a statement Wednesday, the Secret Service saidthe packages sent to the Clinton and Obama homes were "immediately identified during routine mail screening as potential explosive devices." Neither package was delivered to its intended address.

The packages contained crude but functional low-ordnance explosive devices, a law enforcement official told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton. At least two of the devices consisted of a pipe, wires and black powder, the official said.

Seth Meyers Calls Out Trump Over Mail Bombs: ‘The President’s Words Matter’

The ‘Late Night’ host has had it with the president’s harmful rhetoric.

10.24.18 10:03 PM ET
On Wednesday, CNN’s building had to be evacuated in New York after a pipe bomb addressed to former CIA chief John Brennan (in reality, an MSNBC contributor) and the news network was found in the mail.

Brennan, an outspoken critic of President Trump, was one of several targets of the president’s ire to receive an explosive device in the mail—including CNN, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack and Michelle Obama, former attorney general Eric Holder, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Dem megadonor George Soros. (Trump’s media allies, rather predictably, pushed insane conspiracy theories about this being a liberal plot—to bomb themselves—ahead of the midterms.)

“Now, we obviously don’t know yet who sent these bombs, and it’s important to let law enforcement conduct an investigation,” said Seth Meyers on Wednesday’s Late Night. “In fact, the only thing we do know so far is that whoever did this is not only a horrible person, but a moron—because they tried to list the address of Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the return address, but on the envelope they spelled it ‘Florids.’ Well, that narrows it down to anyone who still doesn’t have spellcheck. What did they write that with, Microsoft Word 87? Even Clippy would have caught that!”

Meyers dedicated the majority of his “A Closer Look” segment to the mail bombs, and criticized Trump for passing the buck.

“In a scary moment like this you might expect the president to call for calm—to tone down his own rhetoric and direct his supporters to do the same. Instead, President Trump initially outsourced that job to Vice President Mike Pence,” Meyers explained.

Indeed, Trump at first merely retweeted Pence’s message, along with the comment, “I agree wholeheartedly!”

I agree wholeheartedly! https://t.co/ndzu0A30vU

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 24, 2018
“Hey, man, you’re the president! You’re supposed to say something to calm people down! You can’t just add your name to someone else’s statement like you’re signing a get-well-soon card for a co-worker!” Meyers exclaimed.

Later on, Trump delivered his own statement on the assassination attempts: “We have to unify, we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message: that acts—or threats—of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.” (CNN further reported that the White House did not reach out to the Obamas or Clintons.)

“What we saw today was an actual attempt at real violence against political figures. It’s not the same as, say, confronting a politician in public, and yet for weeks, we’ve all been lectured by the self-appointed civility police about how it’s bad to interrupt people’s dinners like it’s the same thing,” said a fired-up Meyers, pointing to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell having his meal interrupted by an angry constituent, an incident that received endless coverage in conservative media as an example of the “incivility” of the left.

“Everyone was freaking out about McConnell having his meal interrupted, but a day earlier the president was onstage in Montana actually celebrating a congressman body-slamming a reporter, and reenacting that body-slam onstage,” argued Meyers, throwing to video of Trump playfully mimicking Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) body-slamming Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs for merely asking a question about health care during his candidacy. The president has also repeatedly branded the press “the enemy of the people.”

“The president’s words matter—whether it’s his lies about the media or his attacks on immigration,” Meyers concluded.

Fox News coverage of the ongoing domestic terror attack, because I want to know what trump is seeing. Here's what he's seeing: the bombs are basically just a silly prank because they're conspicuously fake. They were intended to freak out their recipients, that's all.

The Fox News crew has clearly been told by higher-ups not to acknowledge these as "bombs" but to call them "packages" instead, and to deem them "suspicious" rather than terrorism. This is all part of positioning this right-wing domestic terrorism as essentially a *non-event*.

.

It's very dangerous to assume anything about this.

Statements I believe are obvious and indisputable:

This is a relatively accessible operation to conduct, including for an individual acting alone if he has some fairly common background. (In this, totally unlike anthrax.)

The targets are all in the top 10 of Trump's hit list, obviously.

However, everyone knows who these are. Anyone can draw up the same list of top 10 people Trump routinely says he wants locked up or neutralized.

It's not clear whether the bombs were operational or dummies.

The timing, obviously, is just before the midterm elections. An intent to influence these is possible, but not guaranteed. It may be the other way around (imminence of election inspires the act).

The logo attached to one of the devices is that from a right-wing parody of ISIS, at least in the picture released.

Having all the hallmarks of Proud Boys types or a lone angry Trump-follower stoked on right-wing media is not proof that this plot originated with such people.

The intent may not be to harm anyone directly but to produce mass psychological effects.

If an alleged perpetrator is discovered, he will be treated as a 1:1 correspondence to whatever group background he has.

(1) trump promoted violence and encouraged supporters to be violent.

(2) trump targeted specific people for repeated, vicious attack.

(3) A domestic terrorist sent bombs to all the people trump attacked.

(4) trump blamed the media.

It's basically that simple.

1, 2 and 4 are obvious to everyone, and were obvious prior to the occurrence of 3.

Millions are capable of 3.

One reason to beware certainty. This can backfire.

Gun to my head or at 1:10 odds, of course I'd pick the combined possibilities of right wing terrorist, or even open fascist declaration from within the Trump circle, as the near-certain bet.

Whether the bombs were real or not it is merely a psy-op! This 'attack' was meant for psychological purposes, not physical harm. Doesn't Trump look majestic talking down violence? Poverty is a form of violence. I'm sure this attack is to further the nationalist right wing agenda and provide some sway for the upcoming elections.

It may not be that but it's several levels above incitement (assuming it is what it appears to be).

no need to start a new thread now .....headline to meet RI standards
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

No. But this is:

These mailings are clearly the work of Vladimir Putin. The hallmarks are plain—the track record of sloppy tradecraft, botched assassination attempts, the history of interference, the sheer nerve.

Putin will spend the rest of his life in prison and Trump will be impeached. Any day now.
