Alrighty then, in case there is still a topic here.

For what it's worth over the years I have seen MANY vehicles dressed up in crazy Christianist or right-wing stickers, it's a thing. Not too frequently, as this is New York City, and though we have plenty of extreme right wingers most of them are married to their cars and would be embarrassed by the vehicle depreciation such a display entails. Anyway, that's New York. You see this a bit more often in suburbs here, and it's supposed to be endemic as one goes further south.

Yea, how about that van, huh? Not very subtle. Indeed, there is a greater need for OVERT signaling nowadays, given the short attention spans and/or ADD of the typical American twitter/news absorber.

They -- very swiftly -- got their man. Case closed! On to the voting booths, plebes. This is, after all, a democracy. We have choices, you see. We have a voice, despite Putin's attempts otherwise.

Cesar Sayoc Was Captivated by Right-Wing Rage

Oct. 26, 2018

Cesar Sayoc Jr., who is accused of sending explosive packages to several of the president’s critics, in a photo taken from social media.
AVENTURA, Fla. — Cesar Altieri Sayoc Jr., a South Florida man charged in connection with a string of bombs mailed to prominent Democrats, appeared to have a lively social media presence, where he frequently posted in right-wing circles and shared conservative news stories and condemnations of liberal politicians.

Mr. Sayoc, 56, appeared to post frequently in Facebook groups like “The Trump American Party” and “Vote Trump 2020” using an account with the name “Cesar Altieri Randazzo.” The account, which was suspended on Friday after reports that Mr. Sayoc was a suspect in the bombing case, shared photos of Mr. Sayoc attending political events and working out at the gym.

Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, the account shared news stories from Breitbart, video clips from Fox News, and posts from pages like “Handcuffs for Hillary.” That year, the account included numerous photos and videos of Mr. Sayoc, a registered Republican, at a Trump campaign rally, wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat.

“We have found and immediately removed the suspect’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram,” Facebook said in a statement. “We will also continue to remove content that praises or supports the bombing attempt or the suspect as soon as we’re aware.”

A Twitter account that federal prosecutors say is Mr. Sayoc’s had frequently posted attacks on immigrants, gun-control advocates and prominent Democrats. In one tweet posted several weeks ago, the account posted a photo of Mr. Sayoc holding a “CNN Sucks” sign.

Another message sent last month included a threat to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., along with an aerial photo of what appeared to be Mr. Biden’s house. And on Wednesday, after the federal authorities had recovered a package that had been mailed to the billionaire George Soros, it included a post that was critical of Mr. Soros and former President Barack Obama.

Here is what is known about the suspect:

• Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Mr. Sayoc had been charged with five federal crimes, and faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted. Read more about the charges against him and how the authorities used fingerprint evidence to build their case here.

• Mr. Sayoc has a lengthy criminal history in Florida dating back to 1991 that includes felony theft, drug and fraud charges, as well as being accused of threatening to use a bomb, public records show. In the bombing case, Mr. Sayoc was accused of threatening to “blow up” a Florida utility company and a customer service representative who he had called to protest a bill. The records listed Mr. Sayoc’s occupation as “manager.”

Cesar Sayoc Jr.Broward County Sheriff's Office
• According to a 2012 bankruptcy petition filed in Miami, Mr. Sayoc resided at the time at his mother’s home. “Lives w/mom,” a handwritten note on the petition said. “Has no furniture.”

• The suspect was arrested at about 11 a.m. in the parking lot of a shopping center in Plantation, Fla., west of Fort Lauderdale. A white van that was covered in stickers was towed away from the scene in the late morning. According to a hairdresser who works at the shopping center, it appeared that Mr. Sayoc had been living inside the van for a while. Read more about the van, which authorities seized on Friday.

• Mr. Sayoc once worked as a manager for traveling “male revue shows,” according to the wife of one of Mr. Sayoc’s business partners.

A relative recalls an obsession with body building

Lenny Altieri, a retired chef in Hallandale, Fla., whose cousin, Madeleine Altieri, is Mr. Sayoc’s mother, said that Mr. Sayoc had been obsessed with body building and had worked at one point as a male stripper in South Florida nightclubs.

“That lifestyle’s all glitter,” said Mr. Altieri, explaining that the last time he saw Mr. Sayoc was at a family gathering about six years ago. Mr. Altieri said he wasn’t aware of Mr. Sayoc’s political thinking at the time.

“That must have happened after Trump came along,” Mr. Altieri said. “Cesar was a cool cat at one point.”

Mr. Altieri said that Mr. Sayoc’s grandparents raised him after Mr. Sayoc had problems with his mother. Mr. Sayoc’s father was from the Philippines and his mother was from Brooklyn, Mr. Altieri said.

Mr. Altieri added that Mr. Sayoc had “a lot of money but lost most of it.” Mr. Altieri said Mr. Sayoc “wasn’t the most stable guy in the world.”

“At least no one got hurt from this business,” he said.

‘That van was his home.’

Federal law enforcement officials seized the van of Cesar Sayoc Jr., who was arrested in connection with the wave of bombs sent to prominent Democrats and critics of President Trump. Here’s why the van could be key to the investigation.Oct. 26, 2018
Manuel Prado, a 56-year-old hairdresser in a salon in the Shoppes at the Waterways in Aventura, said he had seen Mr. Sayoc for the last several years living in his white van, festooned with stickers, in the shopping center’s parking lot.

“I knew right away it was him when I saw the pictures of the van today in the news,” Mr. Prado said Friday afternoon as he prepared to cut a customer’s hair. “That van was his home. It was really smelly when he had the door open and you walked by. It was horrible. He might drive off and run an errand or something, but every morning that van was there in the parking lot.”

Mr. Prado, a hairdresser for 17 years, said he also saw Mr. Sayoc frequently at LA Fitness, a large gym immediately west of the shopping mall. “He would pretend to exercise — I think he just went there to take showers,” Mr. Prado said. “He’d sometimes use a bicycle in the gym. I assume he was a member because they’re very strict about that.”

Asked whether he had ever spoken with Mr. Sayoc, he said, “He was very antisocial. He was a loner. I say hello to everyone here and he would never acknowledge anyone.”

Mr. Prado and other employees at the shopping center said it was not unusual for people to live in their cars in the parking lot. About three months ago, he said, another homeless man was found dead in his car there.

When shown a picture of Mr. Sayoc on a news website, Mr. Prado said he would recognize him anywhere. “He had this weird hairline — I’m a hairdresser and I look at people’s hair,” he said,

At LA Fitness, an employee referred all questions about Mr. Sayoc to corporate officials.

A connection to a ‘male revue’ show

Rachel Humberger, the wife of one of Mr. Sayoc’s business partners, said Mr. Sayoc used to be a manager for traveling “male revue shows.”

“It was a traveling show, but I don’t know what his role was, whether he booked the gigs or what,” Ms. Humberger said.

Ms. Humberger described the shows as being in the style of “Magic Mike,” a reference to a 2012 movie about male strippers.

More recently, she said Mr. Sayoc had been talking to her husband about starting a new business: Fish farms.

“Cesar had opened a bank account” for the new business, she said. “But that’s as far as it got.”

Ms. Humberger also said that she found Mr. Sayoc to be friendly, based on the short interactions she had with him. “He was always sweet and a nice guy in general,” she said.

Ms. Humberger said she never talked politics with Mr. Sayoc, but had been told he played college soccer.

A Florida resident described seeing a van that appeared similar to the one towed away

A local Florida resident remembered seeing a van covered in stickers supporting President Trump.David Cypkin
The suspect’s white van reminded David Cypkin and his girlfriend, who until recently lived in Aventura, Fla., of a van often parked in the parking lot of a local strip mall, the Shoppes at the Waterways. Mr. Cypkin shared photographs with The New York Times that showed a van covered with a number of stickers bearing the image of President Trump and at least one anti-CNN sticker.

Mr. Cypkin, 39, said he lived near the mall and would see the van in the early morning when he walked his dog.

“It struck me because of the crazy conspiratorial stickers covering the windows,” said Mr. Cypkin, a documentary film producer and editor. “It was unsettling, and also it seemed to be occupied. Sometimes the door would be ajar or a window would be open, which indicated to me that maybe somebody was living in the van.”

“I never wanted to get too close,” he added, though he saw the owner at least once. He described him as an older white man.

Mr. Cypkin shared a cellphone picture he took of the van in the early morning of Dec. 31. The photo shows a van similar to the one seen in footage being picked up by law enforcement this morning. He said he called the F.B.I. after learning of the arrest.

On Friday, his girlfriend saw the van on the TV news and sent him a screen shot: “Is this the van from the Waterways?”

Seminole Tribe of Florida Distances Itself From Bomb Suspect Cesar Sayoc

HOLLYWOOD, FL - MAY 11: A sign welcomes people May 11, 2004 during the grand opening for the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. South Florida's Seminole Indian Tribe has opened the state's biggest casino complex. The hotel has 500 rooms, 4,000 video gaming machines, poker tables and several restaurants. The public area has large ballrooms and a six-acre pool site with a 180-foot water slide. The Seminoles have shown big profits in past years by selling tax-free cigarettes and operating bingo halls, but the Hard Rock is its biggest venture thus far. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

Cesar Sayoc claimed he worked for Hard Rock Cafe, but its owners Seminole Tribe of Florida deny that the suspect in multiple mail bombs ever worked there.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida, owners of the Hard Rock Cafe franchise, have distanced themselves from Cesar Sayoc, the 56-year-old suspect believed to be behind at least 13 pipe bombs sent to prominent government officials and Democratic donors in recent days.

On Twitter, Sayoc described himself as the “Current Booking Agent/ Sales/ Marketing/Promotions/Project Mgr Live Events” at Seminole Hard Rock Live, a well-known concert venue on Seminole tribal land in Hollywood, Florida. Alice in Chains and Marilyn Manson both have concerts scheduled at the venue in the upcoming days. In numerous Twitter posts, written under the handle “Hardrock2016,” Sayoc appears to identify as a member of the “Unconquered Seminole Tribe.”

But a spokesperson for the tribe, which bought the Hard Rock Cafe Inc. for $965 million dollars in 2006, tells Rolling Stone that no Cesar Sayoc — nor anyone who went by any of the other aliases Sayoc was known to use — is either a member of the tribe or an employee of the company.

“We can find no evidence that Cesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri Sayoc, Ceasar Altieri Randazzo (Facebook) or Julus Cesar Milan (Twitter) is or was a member or employee of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, or is or was an employee of Seminole Gaming or Hard Rock International,” Gary Bitner, spokesperson for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, said.

He added that the tribe was unable to verify whether Sayoc may have worked for a Hard Rock vendor “at this time.”
Sayoc’s van, towed by federal authorities from the AutoZone parking lot in Plantation, Florida where he was arrested, was covered in Pro-Trump stickers, including one “Native Americans for Trump” decal featuring the The Seminole Tribe of Florida flag.

A window of the van bears the same message Sayoc appears to have worn on a T-shirt to Trump’s inauguration: “My president no path to 270 Landslide It Was A 306-Tsunami Unconquered Seminole Tribe Native Americans Made in America For President Trump 2016-2024 A MAN OF HIS WORD FOR OVER 40 YEARS – THE TRUTH SNOWFLAKES HIS CHECK LIST.”

On Friday afternoon, Sayoc was officially charged in connection with mailing the 13 bombs, sent to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and others. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Sayoc would be charged with interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and certain other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers. He faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted.

#MAGA-BUMMER

Of Course Donald Trump Inspired Cesar Sayoc’s Alleged Terrorism

Sorry, Trumpies, this was no false-flag leftie or Unabomber in the woods. He is Trumpism uncut and unplugged. Deal with it.

Rick Wilson

OPINION

For three long days this week, the Republican Party held its breath as a serial bomber sent a dozen devices to CNN’s New York headquarters, two former Democratic presidents, a former Democratic vice president, two former CIA directors, several elected Democrats, and Democratic activists like George Soros and Tom Steyer. After months of rabid attacks on his opponents as enemies of the people, Donald Trump's crop of crazy came to fruition this week and was almost ready for harvest. By either incompetence, luck, design flaws, or providence, none of the bombs in this campaign of political terror cost life or limb.

This hasn't been an easy week for Trump loyalists. They spent the last 72 hours praying that the MAGA Bomber would turn out to be a false flag attack, the product of some dastardly Democratic cabal. The idea, which bubbled up from the fever swamps of Breitbart, Infowars, and the rest of the Trump-right ecosystem like a fart in a bathtub, was as illogical as it was pathetic. It couldn't be this president's penchant for daily political arson, right?

Twitter Javerts like Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones, Ann Coulter, Frank Gaffney, John Cardillo, Laura Loomer, Jacob Wohl, and alt-right thought leader and Pizzagate promoter Jack Prosobiec all jumped to sell the idea that Trump’s gushing sewer of inflammatory rhetoric could never inspire a serial bomber. Their mirror-world version of Occam’s Razor was that this must be a fiendishly clever leftist plot to disrupt the November elections. Just hours before the arrest of Cesar Sayoc, the president reinforced their fevered belief that this was obviously a left-wing electoral plot.

Introspection isn’t exactly one of this president’s strong suits, and the discovery that the MAGA Bomber was one of the millions of creatures he created, inspired, and motivated to wage war against those he describes as Enemies of the People will never trouble the placid waters of his stunningly shallow intellect. Worry about his responsibility will never penetrate the vacuum of his moral landscape. Trump made an enemies list, and then he weaponized his social media power to push that enemies list into the minds of the furious and febrile who slavishly lap up his every utterance. What, precisely, did he think would happen?

Before Republicans sputter themselves into a tu quoque seizure, calling out Trump's inflammatory political rhetoric isn't an excuse for political violence against Republicans. It doesn't ignore or elide the political violence that struck members of Congress, or anyone else.

“There is no mechanism to stop Trump's division, radicalization, and calls to arms against his enemies.”
All political violence is unacceptable in a functioning republic.

All of it.

All the time.

From anyone, left, right, or otherwise.

This is why we need to look objectively at Trump’s role in this affair. No one in American political life has even a fraction of his power to inspire behavior and action. No one. It's time we recognize that Trump's unique social media presence is a weapon of radicalization. No one else in the American political landscape stokes the resentments, fears, and prejudices of his base with equal power.

Trump never misses a chance to miss a chance to be bigger and better. He never fails to close the door on opportunities to be a consequential leader and not a winking, simpering buffoon who holds the title but never wears the mantle of the presidency. As we saw after Charlottesville, his defiance of every American norm and his eagerness to "both sides" every argument is an extended middle finger to our republic.

“This is the future of the GOP under Trump: not a party but a backwater sub-Reddit chasing conspiracies to paper over the Dear Leader's raging inconsistencies.”
What’s shocking about what we’ve seen from Sayoc’s social media feeds is just how ordinary they are in the Trump online ecosystem. The slurry of conspiracy theories (particularly all things Soros), birtherism, xenophobia, boomer memes, and MAGA spank-bank material in his Twitter and Facebook feeds is the raw distillate from Infowars, Breitbart, and Fox.

I could find feeds identical to this by the dozen just by scanning my latest crop of trolls. Sayoc isn’t a one-off loner radicalized by a few edge-case media outlets; he's an inevitable outcome of an alternative-reality media silo that increasingly defines the intellectual landscape of the Trump right.

By now we've all seen Sayoc's van. The van, covered with a thick stratum of pro-Trump, anti-media bumper stickers, signs, and memes is a perfect symbol of this moment and his movement. This material isn’t an outlier; it’s definitional to Trump Republicanism. The era of Trump ended the GOP branding as the party of limited government, fiscal discipline, constitutional loyalty, and moral probity. Trump’s base defines the GOP as a party of ranty Facebook groups, garishly overwrought conspiracy theories (hello, QAnon!), and raging oppositional defiant disorder.

This is the future of the GOP under Trump; it’s not a party; it’s a backwater sub-Reddit careening from crisis to crisis, chasing an increasingly elaborate set of conspiracies to paper over the raging inconsistencies of the Dear Leader’s message and conduct.

Cesar Sayoc isn't just some loner gone wrong. He isn't merely a one-in-a-million Unabomber with a cabin in the woods, a crazed manifesto, and too much black powder. Cesar Sayoc is the future. Donald Trump's famously loyal base has been radicalized, and while only the tiniest fraction will resort to political violence, neither the president nor the hollow shell of the GOP will do anything to stop it.

This is a president with obvious mental and moral deficits who will say and do anything to retain power. He's backed by a runaway "conservative" media feeding his rabid base a daily dose of conspiratorial lunacy. There is no mechanism to stop Trump's division, radicalization, and calls to arms against his enemies.

America was lucky this week; none of the weapons exploded, and the FBI and state law enforcement moved with amazing speed to apprehend the bomber. We might not always be so lucky, particularly if this president continues to give what future Cesar Sayocs see as their marching orders.

It’s hard to tell when Sayoc’s politics turned extreme. He registered to vote as a Republican in Aventura in 2016.

But Daniel Aaronson, a Fort Lauderdale attorney who represented Sayoc in a 2014 misdemeanor case in which he was accused of stealing “various copper piping items” in Hollywood, said the man he knew then was apolitical.

“He was the most respectful client that I think I’ve ever had. I didn’t think he had a political bone in his body,” Aaronson said. “I am floored. … There are 330 million people in the U.S., I would have put him in the bottom two to three million of people I would suspect of doing this.”

This goes for everyone: please do refer to RI members as "conspiratards."

Bad road, don't go down there, please.

This thing is still unreeling, now we have JFK-era Mafia ties to the suspect. Let's give each other room for intelligent speculation. In this discussion nobody has to "win."

Great to see you, 2012 Countdown! I remember well your terrific contributions in the OWS thread, Oil Spill 'Not for Public, etc.

If this board is split, nobody outside this board is responsible for that. If anything, intolerance has split this board. Everybody take a breath. This is no time to reduce this discussion to Trump's level. Try to show respect as difficult as that may be.

Thank you. :sun:
