Another perspective to the fawning treatment at Sundance, via cross-posting, is in order:

Hence, y'know, all that adoring wall-to-wall corporate-media coverage, climaxing with a standing ovation at Sundance.

The assessment is of her quoted words and the underlying meaning behind them. "Daily Caller" (et al.) isn't putting those words in her mouth.

Who is interpreting what she is saying how’s that slant

The Daily Caller chooses to write up only certain stories about AOC so The Daily Caller does not convey the true AOC

I really really like her and I have that opinion because I have read a lot of information about AOC

Same slant different right wing site

I don’t need to read the Daily Caller for AOC news as a matter of fact I for one do not care what the Daily Caller says or the racist Tucker

The right wing slant is of no interest to me but I guess it is for you ...
That’s fine with me if you choose to link to the Daily Caller unlike some people here I don’t really care who you link to ....I am just expressing my opinion and what I know about them

Since the links I choose to post are constantly being scrutinized I guess I have that same privilege

another point on that Daily Caller article on AOC

There are 102 women in the House of Representatives...makes me kinda curious how many other women The Daily Caller interviewed about their opinion on Venezuela :)

AOC schools conservative Congressman when he tells her House is not just sitting around 'eating bonbons'

A leading conservative member of the House of Representatives warned Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) that Congress isn’t all fun and games in a strange remark Tuesday afternoon.

Bloomberg reported that during the first meeting of the now-Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) told the freshman congresswoman that members of the chamber are “not just sitting around eating bonbons.”

Though Meadows reportedly extended a “cordial” welcome to Ocasio-Cortez and other freshman Democrats, he made the remarks when she pushed back against a motion he proposed.

The Freedom Caucus Republican and his GOP colleagues told Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) that “members should get more than three days’ notice to attend questioning of witnesses by Democratic staff lawyers. Meadows said five days was better, particularly for lawmakers who live far from Washington,” Bloomberg reported.

Ocasio-Cortez said she doesn’t “believe we need five days” if members are correctly doing their jobs, prompting Meadows’ response.

“Mr. Chairman, I can tell you on all of this at this particular point, we’re all wanting to cooperate,” the North Carolina Republican said. “Sometimes our schedules, you know, we’re not just sitting around eating bonbons, waiting for the call of anybody.”

The headline-grabbing freshman Democrat then asked Chairman Cummings if Republicans offered the same extension to Democrats during the last session — to which he responded that they hadn’t.

“OK,” she said. “Thank you.”

The parallel is 100% specious. As I pointed out in another thread:

No, I don't think so. AOC won her Congressional seat by going out in her district and introducing herself; people liked what they heard, she knocked out an established Democrat incumbent in the primary and won the general election. She did not get where she is by media saturation.

AOC is hip to MMT, the most important set of economic ideas in 100 years. If AOC can bring MMT to the fore in the national conversation, it may lead to the closest thing to a revolution that we're likely to see in our lifetimes.

Here's AOC with Stephanie Kelton and Pavlina Tcherneva, two leading proponents of Modern Monetary Theory ("MMT"):

(putting this here to avoid derailing the VZ thread)

All American federal politicians must be judged by how they stand on the question of Venezuela. It has quickly developed into an attempted international crime on the level of the 2003 Iraq invasion. Time is precious.

Nevertheless:

If I understand the implicit premise in these comments, it is entirely false. The efforts of real grassroots organizers, wise or not, should not be insulted in this way. As for this absurd comparison to Trump, let's look at the record:

Celebrity should not be celebrated, most of it is a social corruption. Given that, Donald Trump was no "minor celebrity." It is a reality that for more than 30 years he has been among the 5 or 10 most recognized names in the United States. Well before 2015, that had probably become true of the whole world, thanks to The Apprentice. He has his name featured prominently on high-rises in many cities and in the 1990s and 2000s was able to use his name as the sole selling point for many consumer scam ventures, including an airline and a "university." Besides his own self-worship books, which were best-sellers, several investigative journalists published books about him and his corrupt dealings, including David Cay Johnstone and Wayne Barrett. He occassionally took out full-page ads in the New York Times to advocate for political stances, including the call for the execution of five innocent black men. Starting in the 1970s he put a lot of money into relentless promotion in the capital city of US media, cultivated the right friends in high places, and was readily adopted as a major shiny object by the corporate media. This became huge in the 1980s. He was a tabloid cover staple, was promoted as a playboy, appeared in cameos without need of introduction in at least a dozen Hollywood films and series, and was interviewed on TV news hundreds of times by 2000. (The 1991 movie Gremlins 2, for whatever it is worth, was set in a fictional Clamp Tower owned by a Trump-clone named Clamp. Every minute detail of the building bore a Clamp brand.) In the 2000s, Trump had a primetime network series for fourteen seasons and it was the top-rated US series for several years. He is in the WWE "Hall of Fame." He led the anti-Obama birther campaign in 2011 and was demolished for it in person by Obama himself from the podium at the 2012 White House Correspondents' Dinner, etc. etc. That he was known for his bankruptcies and usually assumed to be at the head of a crooked organization (correctly) unfortunately only increased his celebrity. He was a butt of jokes and widely hated, but by 2015 already as well-known as the US presidents, and famously hung out with the Clintons (and Epstein). When he ran for president, the corporate media gave the TV star they had created wall-to-wall coverage for months when it counted most. They aired his rallies in full and uncut starting many months before the first presidential primary. This was without precedent. In this crucial pre-primary phase he got three times the corporate media coverage of the Clinton campaign, three times more than all the other Republicans combined, and twenty to a hundred times more than Sanders. It is estimated an equivalent ad buy would have cost 2 billion dollars. Like it or not, by then almost all of the 62 million who would vote for him in November 2016 already knew him as a television fixture, and possibly most of them believed he was a successful "businessman" who was committed to the ideological principles of the Republican Party base and who spoke these without varnish. In the spring of 2016, Sanders was drawing crowds to his own rallies that were three times as big as Trump's, and still getting comparably minor coverage. All this illustrates the power of the capitalist ideology that Trump always serves and of which he is an extreme embodiment. It shows the power of big money when applied in ways knowledgeable of how the corporate propaganda system works. It exposes the rotten values upheld hegemonically as the American dream, which Trump represented for decades, like it or not. If you went back to 1995 or even 1985 and asked a random person to name a billionaire, the largest number would have probably named him. Even if it was never true he was a billionaire.

One year ago, in January 2018, AOC was a bartender in New York making crap money like most of the people in New York and in the United States. She was known only to her own acquaintances. She and her supporters, among them socialist activists from DSA, Justice Democrats, and Socialist Alternative, took to the streets of her district in a campaign that faced the #4 ranked Democrat in the House. Joe Crowley was the head of the Queens machine and a 10-term incumbent who outspent Ocasio by 20 to 1. But he turned out to be a hollowed-out paper tiger who had not faced a primary in 10 years, did not even show up to the debates he promised to attend. Enough people in the district loved what AOC was telling them to get behind her. Her campaign got almost no corporate media coverage and had a moderate viral video success online, again thanks to dedicated activists without funding from corporate or state interests. I live a block outside her district and take in an enormous amount of activist and left-oriented information, and yet I too first heard of her only about a month before the September primary, just four months ago. However, her victory turned out to have required no more than 13,000 votes, sufficient for a large margin over the moribund machine man. Only after she defeated Crowley in the primary did the corporate media widely recognize her, because of this achievement. She goddamn well understood how to leverage that! She has become so well-known overnight above all because she speaks some powerful truths about US society without hesitation and has awesome jiujitsu skills with media -- and because Foxnews and "conservatives" in particular have been howling against her every single day since the primary win, seeking to identify her as a socialist enemy of America. This, in turn, wins friends on the liberal side, even as many in that camp would also like to destroy her or make her conform to business as usual. No activist has ever broken into federal politics without being targeted by recuperation attempts. Hopefully she will learn more on foreign policy (where she is, in principle, exceptionally antiwar for a representative in the House) and wise up to the fact that the right-wing propaganda never fails to (falsely) associate her New Deal politics with the plight of Venezuela under US sanctions. Like the Iraq war resolution of 2002 (which Crowley voted for), an American politician's stance on the Venezuela coup of today is a litmus test.

For all that, the volume of attention given to AOC has been brief and moderate. She has been covered as one celebrity among many. Her name recognition in the U.S. remains a small fraction of Trump's even long before his presidential run. Right now she's just a House member with balls and a homemade megaphone. She may now become a bad politician, that remains to be seen. But so far this is a story of people power applied in the right way at the right pressure point (the opportunity recognized in a district election) and no doubt a good dose of happenstance.

Good points on this page.

I'll briefly add: she's young, she's conveyed/accomplished some encouraging things, overall, in her tenure so far, but I've also observed words/comments (Re: Trump and Venezuala) that, to me, signal she's playing to standard party lines -- maintaining the status quo, rather than truly confronting/challenging it.

Time will tell: as her tenure in politics continues in the years ahead, will she show herself to be a genuine 'maverick', or become yet another 'smiley glad hands' politician pandering to her demo? Or perhaps she'll fall somewhere in the middle.

(We'd be left to speculate as to whether her 'fall' to the status quo was due to pressures imposed on her; her own ambitions causing her to 'compromise'; or perhaps -- most cynically -- she's a figurehead presented as an 'alternative' to cater to certain growing sentiment, and when it matters most, she won't pose a threat to Establishment... we all know this certainly wouldn't be the first time for such a tactic).

For now, I'm cynical, but hope to be wrong about my projections.

If it happens, 1. and 2. would be possibilities to consider then. But 3. would remain impossible, as it requires going back in time. I lay out what happened last year in Crowley's district above. AOC was not a programmed Manchurian (meaning in the figurative sense of someone groomed in advance for her present role). She was part of nobody's plans but those of herself and her local supporters. She was lucky and ambitious and highly capable and willing to try something that seemed crazy in the right place at the right time. Something that seemed like a miracle happened. (Crowley could have taken her seriously and gone out to press the flesh for a couple of months, might have saved himself although it's also true his district demographics had changed and AOC had strong Latino support.)

Now that she broke through, it's also a concern that 4. some people will assume option 3 without basis as a matter of their own self-programming to view absolutely EVERYTHING that happens as a seamless part of the one grand media control plan. Not everything that appears on the news appears because of a top-down propaganda campaign! Those fuckers have 24 hours to fill, every fucking day.

And 5. it's spectacular what she's done but remember she's just one damn representative, as you also say. She cannot designate the Speaker, serve on every committee, or swing more than a small segment of her fellow representatives, if that. She isn't going to be able to speak out effectively and be heard widely on every single issue. She doesn't have superpowers. That being said, the current attack on Venezuela is central and she must take a stand one way or another along with all others. Another test will be now that she's on the Oversight Committee. She did not get Ways and Means but she was placed into two high-powered ones, the other one being Financial Services (Wall Street), and I guess she will also be on the defanged climate special committee. Oversight has subpoena power over many areas and she will be able to initiate investigations (though the committee must endorse). Alongside the Intel Committee (Adam Schiff) it is also about to be #Russiagate Central. Perhaps she will be subjected to loyalty tests regarding that particular line. Perhaps also she will stay quiet on it either way and focus on other matters.

It’s making Republicans and right-wingers nuts

........

A C-SPAN tweet of Ocasio-Cortez’s first speech in Congress got a record 1.6 million views in the first 12 hours. The cameras follow her wherever she goes. The more she aggravates people, both left and right, the more her supporters like it. She’s probably already thinking which Cabinet post she’d like were a Dem to win in 2020.

.....

Dems as well as GOP scoff at Ocasio-Cortez at their own peril

Ocasio-Cortez has quickly her stamp on the American political scene, and at a volume loud enough to be heard over even the biggest voice out there: President Donald Trump's.

In an historic year when the Dems took back the House of Representatives and there are more women serving in Congress than ever before, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is hands-down the biggest political show in America.

It’s making Republicans and right-wingers nuts.

But Democrats, especially the throng running for president, should be wary as well. Ocasio-Cortez is already stomping all over their turf.

Ocasio-Cortez came out of nowhere to beat Queens Rep. Joe Crowley, a long-entrenched power player, in a Democratic primary last year.

From that moment on, Ocasio-Cortez has quickly her stamp on the American political scene, and at a volume loud enough to be heard over even the biggest voice out there: President Donald Trump’s.

It’s been amusing to see those on the right tie themselves into knots trying to knock Ocasio-Cortez down. She doesn’t always have her facts correct! She shoots from the hip! She tweets at a moment’s notice! She doesn’t respect her elders!

Sound like anybody you know, Trump fans?

So now the left has their own version of the hyperbolic Trump. And just like with Trump, her supporters are only too eager to forgive or overlook any of Ocasio-Cortez’s foibles.

Ocasio-Cortez may not always be able to keep the branches of government straight. She may have grown up in the hardscrabble Bronx or in tonier Westchester. She may be alarmist in saying that climate change will end the world in 12 years. She may think that a world that allows for billionaires is immoral, thus undermining the very foundation of a country that rewards individual initiative and aspiration.

So what?

Republicans have tried to shush her. Senior Democrats have told her to mind her place and wait her turn. Ocasio-Cortez gives all of them zero you-know-whats. She’s even got that cool “AOC” handle. Fight me!

Dems who thirst for the White House are lucky that Ocasio-Cortez is only 29 and thus ineligible under the Constitution to run for president. Can you imagine the hoopla she’d cause showing up in Iowa or New Hampshire? Ocasio-Cortez on the same stage would make Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders look like the old, Establishment Dems they are.

Warren and Sanders may have been the darlings of the left, but the left is leftier than it was three years ago. Their time has passed. And Ocasio-Cortez may just hit the presidential hustings anyway. Nothing should surprise you. At least for the moment.

But even if Ocasio-Cortez isn’t running for president, her influence is still going to be felt as Dems look to defeat Trump next year. Because she has electrified the left and other Dems in a way that others in the party can only hope to do. And 2020 definitely looks like a year of the left in presidential politics.

It can’t last, you say. People will see through her. The attraction will wear off. People will come to their senses.

Right. They said that about Trump too.

Indeed -- it was quite a spectacle to observe, and I say this as a former longtime Queens resident. In fact, I went to grade/high school with a couple of Crowley's -- far younger -- nieces/nephews, via his paternal uncle.
AOC's win was a unique phenomenon, but it's an event that CAN BE replicated given the changing demos of certain (particularly urban) areas. The next few years may be interesting, and may indeed pose a growing challenge to Establishment. But we all know they won't 'defer' without fighting back, hard.

Of course, absolutely. They can't control everything... BUT, they can certainly "manage" perception; events that initially may not have been part of a propaganda campaign can later be compromised, of course. Not saying this is certainly the case here, or now, but as you allude, we must 'stay tuned' to this channel. There are numerous challenges/'tests' ahead.

Re: The RI thread about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Postby JackRiddler » Wed Jan 30, 2019 12:31 pm

.

I just did, in detail, above, and I described how she actually got here: against the establishment and with no establishment element in the background. Lucky for her it was only the Queens establishment and ripe for just the kind of guerilla thing that she did. Now it's established as possible and inspiring people across the country to think they can do it too.

She is real working class, she was just one of us a year ago - I'm assuming in your case - and she and her people on the ground beat Crowley. They also got lucky. The rest has followed. What the corporate media does is what they always do, and so far she's played it as well as anyone ever has. Above I even name the orgs that got involved with her campaign, and I know people in two of them and have met actually several people who have spoken with her. What happens now can go different ways, but give her and her people the fucking credit!

Can you read that, please? Is this kind of automatic reflex the only thing you want to offer on this matter? Do you win a prize by never risking being wrong?

This doesn't mean that she might not now fuck up, or give up, or be "groomed" or coopted or threatened (which by the way people should take seriously, there already have been a variety of threats from high places). It does mean that the false comparison to Obama (who of course was probably "groomed" and in any case was already an inside political operator in Chicago and then officeholder for a decade or more before his introduction to celebrity in 2004) is only 90% as ridiculous as (but a good deal less disgusting than) the comparison to the born-rich demented child-man actor and pussy-grabber who's been playing a billionaire on TV since 1976.

A year ago, you could have ordered drinks from Sandy at the bar and you wouldn't have conceived nor had any reason to guess where she would be today.

AOC is the right wing’s trigger girl

ICE liberated my town from prostututes! Remember the had old days before ICE was created in 2003 when sex traffickers could just walk into your home, round up your family, and sell everyone to an old business man with super bow tickets?
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

Just lost a whole loooong post there, dammit, with text and images from a whole range of publications in several languages. The gist of it: it demonstrated that she has had an unprecedented amount of free publicity, in both word and image, from corporate neoliberal organs of all stripes, across Europe and the USA (and no doubt Australia, etc.,too), for reasons that are not exactly difficult to discern -

Ocasio-Cortez not the only dancing politician - CNN Video

- but that she will be dropped like a very hot potato if she ever ventures to do anything so rash as to seriously challenge the Empire.

This might conceivably go some way towards explaining her continuing deafening silence on Venezuela. And Spanish is literally her mother tongue, ffs.
