Trump's Green New Deal: President reportedly considering buying Greenland

Aug. 15, 2019, 3:44 PM PDT
By Dareh Gregorian

This land is your land, this land is ... Greenland?

President Donald Trump has on multiple occasions discussed trying to buy the country of Greenland, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Trump has with "varying degrees of seriousness" expressed an interest in trying to purchase the icy 811,000-square-mile island in the North Atlantic, according to the Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the deliberations.

Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory. Trump reportedly told advisers in one exchange last spring he'd heard that Denmark was having financial problems because of the subsidies it pays to Greenland, and wondered if he should buy it. "What do you guys think about?" Trump asked the room, a source told the Journal. "Do you think it would work?"

It's unclear what the price tag for the country would be, or whether Denmark would consider selling it.

Officials with the Denmark's Royal House and the Danish embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to the Journal's request for comment on the talks.

Trump is scheduled to visit Denmark in September.

The United States has previously tried to buy the strategically located country, which has a population of just over 50,000. President Harry S. Truman offered to purchase it for $100 million in 1946, but Denmark declined the offer, the Journal noted, adding the U.S. had also looked into acquiring the country back in 1867.

Technically a part of North America, Greenland is between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and between Canada and Europe. The U.S. has an airbase there, which is part of the country's state-of-the-art ballistic missile early warning system and satellite tracking system.

He wants to recreate his favorite president Andrew Jackson's Trial of Tears with the Inuit

Does he know Greenland is not green

To be totally serious, this is definitely one of his better ideas. Trumpward's Folly.

Greenlanders mock reports that Trump wants to buy Greenland
“I think we take it as a sick joke by a crazy president," a Greenland resident said.

Aug. 16, 2019, 8:01 AM CDT / Updated Aug. 16, 2019, 8:52 AM CDT
TASIILAQ, Greenland — In this coastal town of about 2,000 people in eastern Greenland, residents weren't sure whether to believe the news: Could President Donald Trump really be serious about wanting to buy Greenland?

“I think we take it as a sick joke by a crazy president," said Anna Kûitse Kúko, 63, who has lived in Tasiilaq nearly all of her life and teaches English here. The remark was one of several from local residents who reacted with a mixture of mockery and anger to the reports, which originated with a report by in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

According to the reports, Trump has repeatedly asked advisers and his White House counsel to explore the possibility of acquiring the 811,000-square-mile island in the North Atlantic, which belongs to Denmark and is home to about 56,000 people.

NBC News confirmed that Trump had expressed interest in buying the island, which has natural resources including coal and uranium and already houses an American airbase, part of the U.S.'s ballistic missile early warning system.

It's not clear how much the United States would offer for Greenland, and whether Denmark would be amenable to a sale. The U.S. has looked into buying Greenland twice previously, in 1867 and then 1946, when President Harry Truman offered $100 million but Denmark declined to sell.

Greenland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted that the island was not looking for a buyer: "Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism. We're open for business, not for sale."

The office of Greenland's Premier Kim Kielsen also pushed back on the idea of a sale: "We have a good cooperation with U.S.A., and we see it as an expression of greater interest in investing in our country and the possibilities we offer," the office said in a statement. "Of course, Greenland is not for sale. Because of the unofficial nature of the news, the government of Greenland has no further comments."

A spokesman for the Danish Foreign Ministry said that a statement was forthcoming.

In Nuuk, Greenland's capital, Thomas Juul-Pedersen didn't know quite how to react to the reports on Trump's interest.

“I honestly don’t know what to say," Juul-Pedersen, science and education coordinator at the Greenland Climate Research Centre, said in an email, "as I have a hard time taking it seriously.”

Niels Tvis Knudsen, an associate professor emeritus at Aarhus University in Denmark who has done fieldwork in east Greenland since the 1970s, said he's concerned about outsiders coming in to exploit the country's natural resources and take advantage of its lack of government infrastructure.

“They don’t have an army," he said. "They don’t have an embassy. They don’t have any of those things that a normal state has.”

Online, locals mocked the idea of Trump's interest in buying their homeland.

“Wow I didn't know trump knew greenland existed,” tweeted Miki Fleischer from Nuuk.

“Oh please God no,” wrote Emil Malta in response to the idea.

Another resident reposted a parody photo of a traditional Greenlandic landscape unexpectedly dwarfed by a glittering gold Trump Tower.

"You cannot be serious! We are not something you can just buy. Keep away from our country," said Greenlander Allan Schroder in a series of angry tweets.

Denmark's former Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed confusion over the suggestion. "It must be an April Fool’s Day joke ... but totally out of season!” he wrote.

Rufus Gifford, former U.S. ambassador to Denmark, called the idea "a complete and total catastrophe."

Greenland "is remarkably pristine and complex. A place unlike any other corner of the planet. It simply must be handled with immense care and the best intentions for the people there and the global climate," he wrote. "If anyone believes Trump has either in mind, please reconsider your reality."

Denise Chow reported from Tasiilaq, Greenland, and Caroline Radnofsky reported from London.

Can we get just one 'Trump is Bad, mmkay? Thread?' Why does every word or action have to be rebroadcast, and proliferated, here? I get it, WE get it, he's as bad or worse than W, but god damn you people are obsessed with him.

just slow your roll

82 is a mod I think he can do as he sees fit around here, he is very aware of the rules

I combined all my trump threads to one but that is just not good enough for you is it? Now you are asking everyone else, even the mods to abide by your sensibilities

there is unlimited space here ....go ahead and use it to your hearts content... and the rest of us will abide by Jeff's original rules

you have your own obsessions just like everyone else here

Grizzly, consider it all humor. I laughed my ass off when I read this OP because Trump is trolling the idiots in the media. He probably walked away from the presser or whatever it was and was chuckling saying to himself what a bunch of douchebags. When the media is dumb enough to publish this stupid shit one can only laugh. Really, it's that stupid. When the "sphere" picks it up it like a cow eating their cud. Regurgitating it over and over.

Don't bother trying to get certain people to contain their obsessive compulsions with Trump. It's of no use. Better they burn it off here than IRL.

why don't one of you start one all encompassing complain thread

now can we stop the derail ....PLEASE?

That hilarious and I compliment you for the humor. : )

The whole board is a big complaint. There are pockets of really awesome discussions that aren't complaints, but as a whole its a giant bitchfest. There is a good purpose and intent behind it though. Very useful for all of use else we wouldn't bother reading or posting.

Mods are human. This isn't the first time Drumpf has trolled the media, he does that shit all the time, especially on Twitter.

trump is a serious danger to the whole planet and I will never apologize or stop keeping track of him

I wish I could go back further but between 2005 and 2007 RI was lost so I do not have the number during that time (and there were a whole lot between 2005 and 2007) but from 2007 to 2019 there were 374 OP threads about the BUSHS and I do not remember one person complaining about too much bush and bush left office in 2008! AND 1/3 OF THOSE OP'S WERE AFTER HE LEFT OFFICE!
search.php?keywords=Bush+&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=8&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

average 31 per year

between 2011 till the present there has been 62 OP threads with trump in the title

search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=trump&fid%5B%5D=8&sf=titleonly&start=60

average 8 per year

this stupid false narrative that RI was never that "political" is just not true

Really, Grizzly? One OP, One Comment and one pasted article, and you're complaining as if you were one of the moderators?

How about you try some self-restraint and pause before hitting the submit key? Will your words be beneficial for us to read? How will they benefit you? Positive or negative vibes?

For some who want the world to be a better place, it's best to begin working on it right at home. Before you hit the 'submit' button.

Karma, if you think Trump was trolling the media, I really do feel sorry for you. He was not. He was as serious as a madman. Sad to see you write of others being obsessed with Trump.

You wrote,"The whole board is a big complaint. There are pockets of really awesome discussions that aren't complaints, but as a whole its a giant bitchfest."

Do you really feel offering your snide criticisms are somehow "useful" to any discussion taking place now on RI? Why have you so unnecessarily added to that of which you complain?

You also wrote this, "Don't bother trying to get certain people to contain their obsessive compulsions with Trump. It's of no use."

That's one of the most offensive writings I've read on RI. I'll explain why:

Donald J. Trump is your fucking President! He most seriously inquired about purchasing the subcontinent of Greenland ~ https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-eyes-a-new-real-estate-purchase-greenland-11565904223

This is an extraordinary, and certainly newsworthy event!

And it's certainly extraordinary to read on these pages someone believing Trump himself has the capability of "trolling" the media. (I think you meant 'pwn'-ing actually)

Of course, Trump may now want to go to war with Denmark.

Grizzly's fine. I posted it. I could have nuanced it into the other "TRUMP" thread I started four score and seven years ago but it would have gotten posted anyway. I thought it to be outlandish enough to warrant its own spot and hadn't quite broke out on the "news" yet. No, I did not do that as a moderator. Just a mere poster/member who happens to have found himself with this voluntary job and thought about putting it there for a sec.

But suggesting to buy a territory, while having had happened in the past, today is again, outlandish and to even think that way is idiotically criminal. Everyone here is welcome to start their own threads on any topic that don't break the rules of basic ethics.

Of course Grizzly's fine; so's Karma, even if he believes wacky shit. Exercising a little self-restraint is good advise; letting your demons loose rarely serves any good purpose.

Peace!

I think they told Trump he couldn't buy Little St. Jeff's. So he went big.

Denmark Offers to Buy U.S.

Fedor Selivanov / Alamy Stock Photo
COPENHAGEN (The Borowitz Report)—After rebuffing Donald J. Trump’s hypothetical proposal to purchase Greenland, the government of Denmark has announced that it would be interested in buying the United States instead.
“As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale,” a spokesperson for the Danish government said on Friday. “We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.”

“Denmark would be interested in purchasing the United States in its entirety, with the exception of its government,” the spokesperson added.

A key provision of the purchase offer, the spokesperson said, would be the relocation of Donald Trump to another country “to be determined,” with Russia and North Korea cited as possible destinations.

If Denmark’s bid for the United States is accepted, the Scandinavian nation has ambitious plans for its new acquisition. “We believe that, by giving the U.S. an educational system and national health care, it could be transformed from a vast land mass into a great nation,” the spokesperson said.
