McGilchrist began as a literary scholar before studying medicine in his thirties and then working as a psychiatrist until his retirement. The Matter With Things, his magnum opus, was published in November 2021 and looks like essential reading. More than a decade's labour went into it, but in fact it's the fruit of a whole lifetime's study in diverse but closely interconnected fields. I've now watched a couple of interviews with him, both of them fascinating, but I recommend this brilliant prepared lecture, given five years ago when he was in the middle of writing the book.
The first seven minutes consist almost solely of quotes from eminent scientists and mathematicians about proof, intuition, inspiration, beauty, and the nature of scientific discovery.
