Christian Dominionists, Reconstructionists REFER Kony 2012

We’ve hardly begun to read in this thread what Christian leaders have been accomplishing years before Kony 2012.

This post is about Uganda, and its transformation by Christian Dominionists and New Apostolic Reformation (espoused by Texas Governor, Rick Perry, you’ll remember) among other Christian groups, i.e., Reconstructionists. I remain believing that many countries’ domestic and foreign policies are underpinned by mixes of monotheisms, much to my great disappointment; during some moments, I feel profound dismay about it all. But I can’t stay there too long, obviously.

There are many links in the original.
Highlights are mine.

What is it About Uganda?
Bachmann Campaign Faith-Based Organizer Arrested There in 2006
— Rachel Tabachnick | Thu Aug 18, 2011 at 03:37:53 PM EST

Peter Waldron, a self-proclaimed Christian Dominionist, is now doing faith-based organizing for Michele Bachmann in Iowa and South Carolina. In 2006, he was arrested in Uganda for having four AK-47s and 180 bullets. According to the Atlantic, one paper stated that Waldron was working with Congolese rebels to capture the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony. Another reported that Waldron was forming a Christian political party. Now Waldron, who claims ties to Martin Ssempa, is promoting a movie. Regular Talk2action readers must have a feeling of déjà vu. A Transformation movie from the same time period was about a spiritual warfare excursion led against Kony strongholds by Apostle Julius Oyet, also a key figure behind the “kill-the-gays” bill. The movie was produced as a promotion for the spiritual warfare ideology of the New Apostolic Reformation and included interviews with President Yoweri Museveni and Sam Brownback. What is it about Uganda?

Waldron was quoted in an article in Uganda’s Daily Monitor after his arrest in 2006.

“It struck me that, for many Americans of faith, Uganda—a country where homosexuality and abortion are outlawed, where politicians freely mix church and state, and where outward displays of religious devotion are the norm—represents a kind of haven.”

    Richard Bartholomew describes Waldron.

His theology draws explicitly on Rousas Rushdoony and Christian Reconstructionism, and libertarian rhetoric is put at the service of a theocratic agenda.

Dominionists act upon their belief that government and society should be ruled according to biblical law. American Dominionists seem drawn to Uganda, as if it were some kind of laboratory for experiments to be repeated in other places. Jeff Sharlet observed this in his research for his books The Family and C Street House, which documented the activities of this American-based religio-political fraternity of politicians and power brokers.

As noted by Richard Bartholomew, Waldron is a Christian Reconstructionist, but Charismatic Dominionists have also been swarming Uganda for years. The Charismatic brand of Dominionism of the New Apostolic Reformation has the same agenda as Christian Reconstructionism, but more followers and better packaging and public relations. Despite significant differences in their theology, both brands of Dominionism teach that Christians have a mandate to take control over the institutions of society and government.

Waldron is the author of the 1987 book Rebuilding the Walls: A Biblical Strategy for Restoring America’s Greatness. In an interview in 2009 Waldron stated that

“Biblical principles are eternal and the principles that are applied and referenced in this book are principles that must be applied to today in light of the recent election. As a consequence of the turn of our nation to socialism, away from our historic democracy, our republic, our free enterprise, our capitalist system, these principles are needed today.”

Who the Heck is Peter Waldron?

It all begins with one question: What was Peter Waldron doing in Uganda with a bunch of guns hidden in his house?

The government of Uganda intends to find out, and so is putting Waldron on trial for terrorism. In the process of that trial, the American people may find out quite a bit about their own government that they don’t like.

Let’s list what we know about Peter Waldron, and then we’ll try to piece the picture together a bit later:

- Peter Waldron is from Wyoming - Dick Cheney’s home state
- Like Dick Cheney, Peter Waldron seems to be fond of guns. Waldron was found with assault rifles hidden in his bedroom by a crowd of Ugandans in his Kisugu home (outside Kampala) just after the re-election of Yoweri Museveni
- Two men were seen leaving Waldron’s house carrying a bag that contained two assault rifles just before Waldron himself was apprehended
- Waldron claims to have been working as an information technology consultant for the Ugandan ministry of health
- Waldron also claims to have been working as the publisher of a news magazine, the Africa Dispatch, but other accounts list Waldron as just a freelance writer and photographer
- The Africa Dispatch appears to be created in partnership with a writer affiliated with the right wing Reverend Moon’s Unification Church
- Waldron worked with a company known as the Contact America Group
- Documents found on Waldron indentify him as an advisor to the Rocky Mountain Technology Group
- Waldron is also the founder of a right wing Christian group, the Cities of Faith Ministries...

Not really sure how accurate this site tends to be  but this sounds like a reasonable take:
...Kony's job is to provide the USA with the perfect excuse to invade Uganda on the pretext of inciting another humanitarian mission.

Yoweri Museveni, the dictator of Uganda, is also a CIA asset.

The CIA and its friends are supporting both sides.

"The aim is to destabilize the entire region so effectively that most of it can be effectively controlled under the disguise of the usual humanitarian mission.

"The vast mineral reserves (copper, diamonds, gold, uranium, and oil, for starters) can then he handed on a plate to western exploiters." ...

How is Dominionism Getting into Politics?
Meet the Apostles and Prophets of the New Apostolic Reformation (Video)
— Rachel Tabachnick
— Tue Feb 28, 2012 | 12:05:37 PM EST

A November Charisma Magazine article is titled the “Rising Tide of Influence: How Pentecostalism is gradually changing the dynamics of American Politics.” But most of the leaders in the article are not traditional Pentecostals - they are apostles and prophets of the New Apostolic Reformation. The NAR is one of the current forces behind the radicalization of the Religious Right, and in turn, U.S. politics. NAR leaders teach a dualistic worldview in which all other religions and philosophies, including secular democracy, are considered controlled by demonic entities in a cosmic battle with Christianity. They are leaders on social issues, like fighting abortion and gay rights, but they also emphasize a mandate to take “dominion” over all of the “Seven Mountains” or cultural power centers - arts, business, education, family, government, media, and religion.

The late Rousas Rushdoony, father of Christian Reconstructionism wrote the tome and laid the foundations for infusing Dominion Theology into American politics, but it is Charismatic Dominionists who have had the greater success in drawing millions of followers in the U.S. and worldwide. Following is a brief introduction to a few of the leading apostles and prophets, including video links.

    C. Peter Wagner

Wagner was the Convening Apostles of the International Coalition of Apostles (ICA), Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, Wagner Leadership Institute, and other New Apostolic Reformation entities. Now an octogenarian, Wagner has passed many of his leadership positions to other apostles.

Wagner explains the meaning of “dominion.”

In the video below, Wagner and other apostles take part in a 2008 “apostolic alignment” ceremony for Todd Bentley, during a faith-healing revival in Lakeland, Florida that drew participants from all over the world in the summer of 2008.

Wagner’s interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air in October 2011. (Summary and links to audio and transcript.)

Wagner, Os Hillman, and Myles Monroe explains the Kingdom Economic Yearly Summit, an annual event focused on the Kingdom wealth and the great wealth transfer from the ungodly to the godly.

    Ed Silvoso

Silvoso, Wagner, and Cindy Jacobs, Harold Caballeros and others were the original pioneers of “spiritual mapping” and other Strategic Level Spiritual Warfare (SLSW) practices. Silvoso heads the International Transformation Network (ITN) and is on the current Apostolic Council of the ICA. ITN’s website is now called Transform our World. [First photo at right is Silvoso and former Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona of Hawaii, a long time participant in ITN’s efforts to transform Hawaii. Lou Engle

Engle co-founded TheCall with Che Ahn. Engle leads these events held around the world and is based at Mike Bickle’s International House of Prayer (IHOP). Rick Perry’s prayer rally was patterned after The Call and organized by The Call and IHOP leaders. Engle and Bickle have both been members of the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders. Engle was in the documentary movie Jesus Camp with New Apostolic leader Becky Fischer, both of whom are part of Che Ahn’s apostolic network.

The Call San Diego in 2008 in support of Proposition Eight, segment closes with Engle calling for martyrs from the stage.

Engle and Bickle lead TheCall Jerusalem, which corresponded with the Global Day of Prayer in 2008 and was in support of Messianic networks in Israel and conversion of Jews.

    Dutch Sheets

Dutch Sheets was C. Peter Wagner’s personal pastor after Wagner left Ted Haggard’s New Life Church. Sheets is the apostolic authority over the U.S. Alliance for Reformation prayer network. He has recently endorsed Newt Gingrich and become a member of Gingrich’s national Faith Coalition Leaders. [The photo at right is Dutch Sheets with Apostle John Benefiel and Sen. Sam Brownback at TheCall Nashville on 7/07/07.]

Dutch Sheets says even though they won’t be able to rule all of the earth until Jesus’ return, they should try.

Bickle headed a controversial ministry in the 1980s and 1990s referred to as the Kansas City Prophets and was a member of the original Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders He led part of Gov. Rick Perry’s prayer event in Houston on August 6, 2011.

Che Ahn introduces Stacey Campbell at the 2008 “alignment ceremony” of Todd Bentley.

Ahn claims that the president of South Korea is a “marketplace apostle” on the government mountain.

    Rick Joyner

Rick Joyner is founder of MorningStar Ministries, a major prophet in the movement, and the co-founder with Samuel Rodriguez of a religio-political organization called the Oak Initiative.

The Oak Initiative and it’s affiliate Transformation Michigan were sponsors of TheCall Detroit on 11/11/11.

Rick Joyner (with Janet Porter and Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William Boykin of the Oak Initiative) warns audience in April 2011 to wait about choosing a GOP candidate, explains that campaign behind the scenes was formed prior to Reagan candidacy in 1980.

    Samuel Rodriguez

Rodriguez has been a member of the International Coalition of Apostles, a co-founder and Vice President of The Oak Initiative, and president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. (He resigned from the Oak Initiative last year following an exposé on the Oak Initiative’s activities.) Rodriguez and the NHCLC are partners in the United in Purpose multi-million dollar effort to register conservative evangelical voters. Rodriguez and other NHCLC leaders (some who answer to Cindy Jacobs as their apostolic authority) lead events drawing Hispanic communities into NAR activities.

(Below) Rodriguez in United in Purpose video “One Nation Under God,” used for church and house parties to get out the vote for 2012.

    Harry Jackson, Jr.

Jackson is on the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders. Jackson and Samuel Rodriguez (above) are leaders of the Affordable Power Alliance (APA), an affiliate of the Congress on Racial Equality. Decades ago CORE was a prestigious civil rights organization, but today CORE and APA promote global warming denial and fight the EPA and environmental regulation.

(Below) The “Gathering of Eagles” in January 2012 was hosted by Cindy Jacobs and the Family Research Council to kick off the election year. Jackson begins by declaring the taking down of the “Queen of Heaven” in Maryland. The apostles claim that this “demonic principality” blocks Roman Catholics from being evangelized and oppresses humans with other vices.

    Don Finto

Finto provides “apostolic oversight” for many Messianic Jewish leaders and is a leader in initiatives to support Messianic communities and convert Jews in order to hasten the End Times.

Finto leading the prayer for Israel at Rick Perry’s August 6 prayer event.

    Mary Glazier

Glazier has been part of the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders and is credited with bringing apostolic prayer networks to Alaska. She has stated that Sarah Palin belonged to her apostolic prayer network since the age of 24. Glazier continued to announce prophecies about Palin and mentor her through the 2008 election.

    Bill Hamon

Hamon has his own international apostolic network and has been part of the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders. Hamon was part of the Latter Rain movement of the 1950s that predates the NAR and teaches Manifest Sons of God theology as seen in the quote below about the “mankind race.” [Hamon below right with former Colombian president Alvaro Uribe.]

”The Third and Final Apostolic Reformation began with the Saints Movement. It is transitioning the Church into demonstrating and implementing the Gospel of the Kingdom for disciplining the nations and bringing transformation to the seven world kingdoms, which are being illustrated as the ‘seven mountains’ of business, education, government, media, family, religion, and entertainment.

...Christ’s Third Church Reformation and purpose to fulfill God’s original mandate to subdue all things, to take dominion and fill the earth with a mankind race in God’s own image and likeness...”

...God is preparing His Church to become an invincible, unstoppable, unconquerable, overcoming Army of the Lord that subdues everything under Christ’s feet.

...God’s great end-time army is being prepared to execute God’s written Judgments with Christ’s victory and divine judgment decrees that have already been established in heaven. The time is set when they will be administered and executed on earth through God’s saintly army. All that is destined and needed will be activated during God’s restorational Army of the Lord Movement.”

Bill Hamon 2010 prophecies for the U.S.

    Ken Malone

Although Malone is not as well known nationally as the other apostles listed above, he was the Florida apostle leading the now infamous Katherine Harris conference call during her campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2006 in which she called for the conversion of her Jewish brothers and sisters.

Invisible Children Nonprofit Extensively Tied To “The Family”
— Bruce Wilson | Talk to Action
— Wed Apr 04, 2012 at 08:00:29 AM EST

“[It] functions invisibly like the mafia... They keep their organization invisible. Everything visible is transitory. Everything invisible is permanent and lasts forever. The more you can make your organization invisible, the more influence it will have.” - Doug Coe

    Executive Summary

[UPDATE: Truth Wins Out obtains exclusive audio of Jason Russell, from a 2005 conference, describing Invisible Children as a “trojan horse”.]

[note: some readers who are very familiar with what The Family / The Fellowship is may want to skip the executive summary and proceed to the section titled “Invisible Children connections with The Fellowship”, which starts at the 1/4 mark. For a short cover of some of the important aspects of this story, see the LGBT rights group Truth Wins Out press release, Invisible Children’s Robust Ties to The Family Suggest Invisible Fundamentalist Agenda.]

It is unlikely that many Americans who watched Invisible Children’s record-smashing viral video hit KONY 2012 were aware of IC’s evangelical nature (1, 2) or of the nonprofit’s early financing from foundations that back the hard Christian right, including one of the biggest funders of the 2008 push for California’s anti-same sex marriage Proposition 8.

But Invisible Children, which has branded itself as welcoming cultural, religious, and sexual diversity, also enjoys extensive institutional and social ties to the global evangelical network known as The Fellowship (also known as “The Family”) - which has been credited with inspiring and providing “technical support” [see footnote 1] for Uganda’s internationally-denounced Anti Homosexuality Bill, also dubbed the “kill the gays” bill.

[UPDATE: new video, below, describes co-mingling of Invisible Children’s Ugandan education program with The Fellowship’s academy system in Uganda]

The Fellowship is a secretive U.S.-based brotherhood of international political and business leaders. Founded in 1935, its growing political clout was brought to widespread public notice with a 2002 Los Angeles Times report by Lisa Getter, then exposed in subsequent articles and two books by journalist Jeff Sharlet: The Family and C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat To American Democracy.

As stated by Fellowship member and Watergate felon Charles Colson, the group is a “veritable underground of Christ’s men all through the U.S. government.” The Fellowship sponsors an annual National Prayer Breakfast in the U.S. and in countries throughout the world and sponsors training for youth including in Africa, where media materials repeatedly describe mentoring of a “new breed” of African leaders.

Since the 1970s, the preeminent leader of the Fellowship has been Doug Coe, who has stated that Christians should be as dedicated as were the followers of Hitler, Lenin, and Mao. Coe has also advocated that Christians should organize “invisibly” like the mafia - as Coe claims, Jesus advised.

Mike Timmis, a Fellowship leader and former chairman of Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship and Prison Fellowship International, has heavily funded both the International Foundation of the Fellowship and its Uganda network. The first effort was a hospital built at the request of President Yoweri Museveni, who had taken control over the country in a coup in 1986.

The next project was Cornerstone Development, a network of projects initiated by Timmis’ son Mike, who had been mentored by Fellowship leadership in Washington D.C., and two other young proselytes - John Riordan, who came to Uganda after being mentored at The Fellowship’s Ivanwald house, and Tim Kreutter, who still leads the Cornerstone Development network.

    < snip image >

The elder Timmis wrote, “The young leaders of Cornerstone Development saw that it would be much easier to form a new generation of African leaders than to persuade the present leaders to reform.” Photos from the early days of the first Cornerstone school show both Yoweri Museveni and the Fellowship Doug Coe on location.

This new breed of leaders being mentored by The Fellowship is to bring peace, prosperity, and harmony to Africa and the world through obedience to their unique brand of faith, one in which those of all religions - Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu - worship Jesus together while maintaining their ethnic identity. In his writings Jeff Sharlet describes the family as embracing “biblical capitalism” or an allegiance to free enterprise as the foundation for all other freedoms.

Family teaching eschews divisive theological doctrine; Catholics, Protestants and non-Christians are urged to unite under what Sharlet describes as the twin pillars of American fundamentalism - the privatization of resources and the public regulation of morality. Sharlet describes the The Fellowship as having brought Museveni, formerly a “left-wing” dictator, to one of their Washington, D.C. houses, the Cedars, where Museveni was transformed into a believer and a “key [Family] man in Africa.”

Both The Fellowship and Invisible Children have partnered closely with the government of Uganda which, under longtime president and Fellowship member Yoweri Museveni, stands accused of a wide array of human rights abuses [see footnote 2] and has helped produce evangelical propaganda demonizing, and blaming for their own suffering, Acholi victims of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Reformation Army.

During the last decade, Fellowship members in the U.S. Congress helped turn Uganda’s highly successful “ABC” HIV/AIDS reduction approach, which had promoted both abstinence, marital fidelity, and condom use, towards an approach that stressed fidelity and abstinence but not condoms. Uganda’s HIV/AIDS rate reduction “miracle” subsequently reversed, so that the country is the only nation in East Africa with a rising HIV rate. Writing from one of Cornerstone Leadership Academy’s graduates suggests that the “abstinence-only” approach is still favored by The Fellowship in Africa [see footnote 3].

    < snip image>

At least two of Invisible Children’s programs have involved collaboration with The Fellowship and and its members, and by 2007 -- according to accounts from both Invisible Children and Fellowship members -- Invisible Children had partially merged its developing school and mentoring programs in Uganda with The Fellowship’s Ugandan educational and leadership training system, which works to raise up a cadre of elite Jesus-centered leaders who will transform their nation along “Biblical” lines - with one apparent objective being the categorical elimination of homosexuality.

Another Cornerstone/Fellowship activity in Uganda is sponsoring and organizing Uganda’s yearly National Prayer Breakfast. At Uganda’s 2010 National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, Ugandan MP and Fellowship member Cecilia Ogwal delivered a prayer (footage of Ogwal, from event) in which she declared,

“We are binding the evil of homosexuality. We are binding all sorts of forces of evil, where the devil has taken an upper hand... and we are raising the banner of Christ!”

Like The Fellowship’s educational approach in Uganda, Invisible Children’s stated philosophy for its Ugandan educational programs is, rather than enable large numbers of children to get an education, to focus its available financial resources on a small, elite group who will emerge as national leaders.

While the humanitarian nature of The Fellowship’s efforts is invariably stressed, individuals associated with the Fellowship (and with Invisible Children) are founding a fast-growing array of Uganda-based for-profit businesses, such as Apolis Global, that capitalize on The Fellowship’s privileged, high-level international political networks.

Among the current and past Invisible Children leaders and employees with professional and social ties to Fellowship members are Jason Russell, Laren Poole, Ben Keesey, Ben Thomson, Adam Finck, James A. Pearson, and Jared White - who in late 2009 went on a cross-Africa motorcycle trip with three young Americans who are working to develop The Fellowship’s programs in Uganda, including Eric Kreutter - son of Tim Kreutter, The Fellowship’s longtime American leader on the ground in Uganda.

Kreutter oversees Cornerstone Development, the principal umbrella effort of The Fellowship in Uganda. A leading Cornerstone initiative is its educational programs. Head Cornerstone Education Director Paul Lukwiya has been reported to be overseeing Invisible Children’s mentoring program in Uganda.

Ties between IC founders Jason Russell and Laren Poole, and alumni of The Fellowship’s National Student Leadership Forum (NSLF), predate the founding of the Invisible Children nonprofit, tracing back as early as 2004.

The US-based National Student Leadership Forum’s partner institution in Africa is the African Youth Leadership Forum (AYLF), co-organized by Ugandan Fellowship member MP David Bahati [see footnote 1]. The AYLF has sent members to the United States, to give presentations at NSLF forums and attend The Fellowship’s Washington National Prayer Breakfast events.

Invisible Children’s connection to The Fellowship’s network provides an explanation of IC’s early access [see footnote 2] to internationally powerful politicians; less than a year after the nonprofit was launched in 2005, Invisible Children had already gained political backing, from U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) and Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni, both important Fellowship members.

Invisible Children connections to The Fellowship

    Apolis Global

    < snip image >

One of the most immediate IC-Fellowship connections traces directly through Jason Russell, and other top Invisible Children leaders, and the co-founders of Apolis Global - a California for-profit boutique high-end clothing brand which Invisible Children has partnered with in a joint project in which cotton for Apolis clothes is grown in Northern Uganda. Apolis currently lists 43 vendors for its clothing line in the United States, with additional merchants in Australia, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Apolis Global co-founders, Raan, Shea, and Stenn Parton are alumni of The Fellowship’s National Student Leadership Forum and claim to receive annual invitations to The Fellowship’s signature event, the Washington National Prayer Breakfast - a star-studded, elite invitation-only event featuring politicians and leaders from countries across the globe. U.S. presidents since Eisenhower have routinely spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast.

According to Apolis cofounder Shea Parton, he met and became a surfing partner with, and a personal friend to, Invisible Children cofounder and President Laren Poole while Parton and Poole were studying at the University of California at San Diego, and first met Jason Russell during the same time period.

In 2010, according to Shea and Raan Parton, the Parton family sponsored top Invisible Children executives Ben Keesey and Ben Thomson, so the two could attend the 58th Annual Washington National Prayer Breakfast - where the Partons and the IC executives “met with a number of ambassadors to developing countries in search of new supply chain partnerships”.

    < snip image >

Apolis has featured Invisible Children leaders Jason Russell and Laren Poole on its website, including a special multi-page “case study” feature on Ben Thomson.

On March 22, 2012, Apolis Global hosted a screening of Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 film, attended by members of the “Invisible Children family”, after which Shea Parton described “the long history Apolis has working with Invisible Children’s on the ground programs in Uganda.”

Recent IC/Apolis joint projects have included a $396 canvas “Philanthropist Briefcase” and a $296 “Philanthropist Tote” bag, both made from organic cotton grown in Northern Uganda’s Gulu region. Jason Russell can be seen discussing the joint venture in a 1 and 1/2 minute Apolis-produced video posted July 2010 on Youtube.

Beyond the partnership with Apolis Global and the Fellowship-connected Partons, Invisible Children has also benefited from the efforts of alumni from the Fellowship’s National Student Leadership Forum who, across the United States, have been active in starting Invisible Children school clubs, which fund raise for IC and and promote its initiatives. One of those initiatives is IC’s Schools For Schools program, whose Ugandan mentors have been reported to be under the supervision of The Family.

Shea Parton describes his close friendship with Jason Russell as beginning with a 2004 meeting with Russell, shortly before Russell’s second trip to Africa. One Fellowship member working in Uganda, John Niemeyer, states that in 2007 Shea Parton - with Invisible Children members in tow, visited the Fellowship leadership academy Niemeyer was helping to build in Northern Uganda.

    Bob Goff

Posts on Invisible Children’s website have identified the sponsor of that academy initiative, Bob Goff -- a significant leadership figure in The Fellowship who gave a seminar at the 2012 National Prayer Breakfast -- as a “friend” of the Invisible Children organization.

Another IC connection to Goff is through James A. Pearson, who managed Invisible Children’s Bracelet Campaign for three years, up into 2008 according to IC’s 2008 Annual Report. Pearson describes Goff as a friend and in 2010 filmed Bob Goff and Goff protégé John Niemeyer at Goff’s Restore Leadership Academy, one of The Fellowship’s more recently established Uganda schools.

Goff’s Restore Leadership Academy has been endorsed by Former Ugandan Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi, and Goff himself has repeatedly met in Uganda with First Lady Janet Museveni, including on March 23, 2012, when the First Lady officially received a delegation of sixteen American and Ugandan members of Restore International, led by Bob Goff, at the Ugandan State House.

Goff, who describes his approach to life as “leaking Jesus”, has been officially appointed, by an act of Uganda’s Parliament, as Honorary Consul for the Government of Uganda - which he describes as “evidence of Jesus”. As Goff told an audience at the February 17-19, 2012 “Jubilee” conference held in Pittsburgh, “I have some cool license plates. I could park on the lawn. I have two flags... I have this card from the [U.S.] State Department. I have diplomatic immunity. I could kill you.”

In February 2007, Bob Goff was mentioned in a session of Uganda’s parliament as scheduled to speak at a February 23, 2007 parliamentary prayer breakfast along with top Fellowship leaders Dick Foth and Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.

An adjunct law professor at Pepperdine University, Goff is part of an ambitious effort, spearheaded by Pepperdine students and faculty, to remake Uganda’s judicial system. Pepperdine’s fall 2009 issue of Law Magazine reported on a Ken Starr trip to Uganda during which Starr, then Dean of the Pepperdine Law School, signed an agreement committing Pepperdine to the project:

“Together with members of the Ugandan judiciary, Dean Starr signed a memorandum of understanding, a document that made official Pepperdine’s clerkship program with the Ugandan judiciary. Starr committed Pepperdine would work collaboratively with the Ugandan judiciary to develop academic and legal reform measures.”

Goff also sits on the advisory board of Mercy’s Village, another Ugandan Fellowship academy initiative, along with Fellowship leaders Tim Kreutter and Paulo Kyama; both Kreutter and Kyama have been identified by journalist Jeff Sharlet as being in the Fellowship’s key Uganda power group.

Also, serving on the Mercy’s Village advisory board, in addition, is Paul Lukwiya -- now Education Director for The Fellowship’s programs in Uganda. Lukwiya has also been described as “mentoring” the group of mentors who serve children and young adults in Invisible Children’s Ugandan educational programs.

    Kreutter, Niemeyer, Ojok, and White

As chronicled in almost an hour of video footage posted to Vimeo.com, in December 2009 four young Americans set off on a several thousand mile, five week motorcycle trip across East/Central Africa. One of the four, Jared White, has served with Invisible Children, in various leadership capacities, since 2005. The other three had institutional connections to David Bahati, because they were helping manage elite leadership schools in Uganda run by The Fellowship.

Two of Jared’s White’s motorcycle trip companions were John Niemeyer and Blake Gaskill, who were both working to develop Bob Goff’s Restore Leadership Academy in Northern Uganda. An October 2007 post by Niemeyer suggests the apparently intertwined nature of Fellowship efforts, such as Restore Academy and Cornerstone Leadership Academy, with Invisible Children’s activities in Uganda:

“I went with Ilea and John, our driver, to the Cornerstone Ranch in Luweero for a night. The ranch is thousands of acres and has 3 schools on it, so we went so I could check out their schools and so we could see some people. The schools were really cool. All of the guys who live at the Youth Corps house with me went to the Cornerstone Leadership Academy at the ranch so it was good to see where they came from. The vision for the Restore Academy is something like the CLA so I was able to get a visual picture of what theirs looks like.

      [...]

One of the IC (Invisible Children) guys, Jared, was staying at Ilea’s so I got to meet him and hang out for the weekend. He’s a really cool guy and will be in Gulu until November, so that’s good. The bummer is that most of the IC people I’ve met have been here for a while and are on their way out or are leaving in a month or two. But we had a fun weekend. Friday night I went to Bible study with the girls again, which is always cool.”

Invisible Children Nonprofit Extensively Tied To “The Family”
— Bruce Wilson | Talk to Action
— Wed Apr 04, 2012 at 08:00:29 AM EST

Another figure later reported to have shown up on the Fellowship’s Gulu social scene was Former President George W. Bush’s daughter Barbara Bush, who was photographed in Gulu on March 13, 2012. The previous day, as Invisible Children enthusiasts stormed, by the hundreds or thousands, social media sites such as Reddit.com to promote Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 video, John Niemeyer tweeted,

“At dinner with a 300 lb all pro NFL lineman on my right, and Barbara Bush to the left. Just another night in Gulu!”

Both John Niemeyer and Blake Gaskill have each described attending an August 2008 Fellowship gathering in Tanzania, which featured international Fellowship head Doug Coe as a speaker. Niemeyer wrote,

“I just got back from a conference in Tanzania called the Jesus Reunion. It was a conference put on partly by Cornerstone here in Uganda and the guys behind the national prayer breakfast movement. In short, the conference was amazing, I’d never been to anything like it. People from all sorts of backgrounds and faiths were there to focus on what unites us, Jesus. The theme was to think, talk, act and love like Jesus. Every session, speaker and small group surrounded this focus on Jesus. I can’t really put to words the thoughts and feelings I had throughout the week, but it was life changing. Everyone there was considered to be a part of this “family of friends” and treated everyone like family, thus the reason for it being called a reunion.

The godly advice and leadership that is being exemplified by so many around the world was mind-boggling. To steal from one of the speakers, I’ve seen first hand the liberating power of “doing unto others what we would want others to do unto us.”

A few things I wrote down that I thought were noteworthy:

      [...]

About the “Jesus Movement” of bringing the focus back to Jesus and his life instead of promoting “Christianity” or certain denominations: A few of the main points were that: It’s a focus on Jesus as the common ground, It’s a revolution of love that works across all that is dividing humanity, It’s a call for personal transformation, Its about faith for a better world, A focus on the essentials: love God & love your neighbor as yourself, And reach out to leaders, but only have one Leader that you give your life to.

The last point that Doug Coe, the main guy said to the group was pretty cool. He said the two things: First, that on his tombstone he would hope people would say, “Here loves Doug Coe, a man who loved Jesus with his whole heart.” The second point was to challenge us all “Don’t be led by men. Follow only Jesus with your whole heart and let the Holy Spirit guide you.””

As Niemeyer’s Restore Academy colleague Blake Gaskill described the event,

“At the end of last month, John, a couple of Kampala friends, myself, and about 70 Cornerstone Ugandan friends all jumped on a couple of buses and headed out on a 24 hour bus ride through western Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

      [...]

The destination was Arusha, Tanzania at the foot of Kilimanjaro, for a 4 day conference called the “Jesus Conference”. Predominately Christians, but also Buddhists, Muslims, and folks from other religious backgrounds all gathered to “think, talk, act, and love like Jesus”, seeking to understand His teachings on reaching out to the fatherless, widows, and poor. The conference has been running for at least 4 years, and is organized by a group called “The Family”, aka “The Fellowship”, aka “the group behind the National Prayer Breakfasts worldwide”, founded by Doug Coe, a former and current advisor and friend of multiple world leaders. Meeting around the person, life, and teachings of Jesus, whom the Buddhists consider a great teacher, the Muslims consider a prophet, and Christians consider to be the Messiah, has proved to be a great uniter of this incredibly diverse group of people, and a beacon of hope for future inter-religious peace, understanding and collaboration.

      [...]

The conference drew about 350 people, from 23 countries around the world, including Japan, Nepal, India, USA, Norway, Ecuador, and multiple African countries. We had a wonderful time of friendship, meals, rest, recreation, workshops, and speaking sessions on youth mentoring, school development, and many other humanitarian aims.”

As Cornerstone Leadership Academy leader Philip Ojok, one of the early CLA graduates, described the Tanzania event headed by Coe and attended by Niemeyer and Gaskill, in the October 2008 Cornerstone newsletter,

“[D]uring the months of June and July we were involved in organizing the Arusha Jesus Reunion (AJR). In the past we have held similar conferences under a different name, but we chose to call this one a “reunion” because, this time it was a bigger gathering that brought together 220 people from 20 countries.”

Ojok described the conference as organized under four main groupings - the Prayer Breakfast Group, the Youth Mentoring Group, the Student Leadership Group, and the Leadership Academy Group.

In an October 9, 2008 post, Blake Gaskill reported on a trip that Cornerstone and Restore members made, to attend the 2008 Uganda National Prayer Breakfast where, according to journalist Jeff Sharlet, the idea for the subsequent “kill the gays” legislation was first discussed. As Gaskill wrote,

“I’m in Kampala today, as several of us were able to attend the National Prayer Breakfast this week. Most of the Ugandan Members of Parliment [sic], several ambassadors, foreign dignitaries, President Museveni, and hundreds from the community gathered at the Hotel Africana Wednesday to lift up Uganda in prayer. People from various faiths were there, and it was a wonderful morning of reunion, friendship, hope and prayer for the future of Uganda and the larger African community. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow cameras for security reasons, so I’m unable to pass along any photos, except this one of ten of us squeezed in the Land Cruiser on the way home from Hotel Africana”

Accompanying Blake Gaskill’s report was a high quality photo of Gaskill, John Niemeyer, and other Fellowship members in the Land Cruiser en route to the Ugandan National Prayer Breakfast.

Another member of Jared White’s 2009 motorcycle trip quartet was Eric Kreutter. According to the February 2009 issue of Tim Kreutter’s Cornerstone newsletter, his son Eric Kreutter was in 2009 working internationally to manage Fellowship group homes in which orphaned children lived with and were mentored by graduates of the Cornerstone Leadership Academy. Joining Kreutter in this work was Philip Ojok, one of the highest ranking Ugandans in the Cornerstone operation.

    The Africa Youth Leadership Forum

Another of Ojok’s projects has been taking the lead role in launching the African Youth Leadership Forum, a transcontinental Fellowship initiative which is now active in seven African nations. Helping out with the task of organizing the AYLF, according to an October 14, 2007 story from the Ugandan government controlled New Vision news service concerning a 2007 meeting of the Africa Youth Leadership Forum (AYLF), has been MP David Bahati. The New Vision story stated,

“Ndorwa West MP David Bahati, one of the organisers, said the youth forum would become part of the activities of the annual National Prayer Breakfast.
“The forum is to mentor young leaders in good leadership skills and to respect God,” Bahati said.”

Under the auspices of the recently-formed African Youth Leadership Forum, which serves as a support network for Cornerstone Leadership Academy graduates, Ugandan CLA alumni have traveled to the United States to attend the Washington National Prayer Breakfast and give talks for the National Student Leadership Forum, whose alumni Shea, Raan, and Stenn Parton are partnering with Invisible Children.

In a December 23, 2009 comment on the website of an Eastern European Fellowship member who has been critical of David Bahati’s Anti Homosexuality Bill, Philip Ojok accused critics of misrepresenting the bill, affirmed MP David Bahati’s membership in The Fellowship, and aired a conspiracy trope endemic to Ugandan political culture -- the claim, also promoted by First Lady Janet Museveni and MP David Bahati, that rich Westerners in Uganda are bribing Ugandan youth to become gay:

“I think that what the West is running around with is not a true representation of the bill itself or even the spirit of the Bill. David Bahati (Hon) is a member of our fellowship, and within our circles talks have been ongoing for grace towards specifically the aggravated offenders. Yesterday the Hon. Nsaba Buturo (Minister for Ethics and also a member of our fellowship) said that portion of the bill is going to be amended. However, my personal opinion was to treat aggravated homosexual behavior with a very harsh deterrent equivalent to those of other sexual offenders.

We live a country where young people are taken into doing anything as long as it gives them some economic gains. The West have made it seem like the bill is calling for death on all gay people this is not the case. By and large a big population of this country will support the bill. My biggest challenge is a group supported by some reach Americans going around boarding schools with lots of cash recruiting young innocent children to homosexual behavior.

      Sincerely,
      Phillip Ojok, Uganda”

Cornerstone Leadership Academy graduates have credited Ojok, along with Tim Kreutter and Paul Lukwiya, as being one of the most inspirational leaders in the program.

    Paul Lukwiya

The stated philosophy of Invisible Children’s Ugandan educational programs closely mirrors the stated philosophy behind The Fellowship’s Cornerstone Leadership academies. Neither program seeks to maximize educational opportunities for large numbers of Ugandans. Rather, both programs foster small numbers of exceptionally talented students, selected from at-risk populations; both programs also state explicitly that their goal is to raise up a generation of Ugandan leaders who will transform their nation.

Toward that end, both programs employ mentors who are paired with individual students and provide a crucial quasi-parental support system. Further, both mentoring programs have been supervised by Ugandan Fellowship member Paul Lukwiya, now Education Director for The Fellowship’s Ugandan leadership training schools.

On October 14, 2009, only weeks before Jared White and his Fellowship comrades had set out on their cross-Africa motorcycle odyssey, Ugandan MP David Bahati put on the Ugandan parliament’s legislative agenda the now-notorious, internationally-condemned Anti Homosexuality Bill.

Two days later, an October 16, 2009 post on the website of the Invisible Children nonprofit described a inspirational speech that Paul Lukwiya, one of Bahati’s colleagues in the Ugandan branch of The Fellowship, had given to students attending the Pope Paul VI Anaka School, in Uganda’s northern Gulu region.

As the post noted, addressing the students were “IC [Invisible Children] mentors, the school’s Head Teacher, and the man who mentors the IC mentors, Mzee Lakwiya [more commonly spelled Lukwiya. Mzee is a Swahili term of respect for an elder man].” The post neglected to mention that Lukwiya had headed The Fellowship’s boy’s Cornerstone Leadership Academy in Uganda for over a decade.

As the October 16, 2009 Invisible Children post, titled “IC mentors address a group of students at Pope Paul VI Anaka School before their exams”, described,

“Two thick mvule trees loomed overhead, casting webs of shadow and light across the two hundred students gathered beneath them. Sitting in a row before the students, a half dozen guest speakers waited their turn to speak. The students, all in grades S4 and S6, and all about to take the most important exams of their lives, sat wide-eyed and still. The open-air meeting was a crucial one. The guest speakers--IC mentors, the school’s Head Teacher, and the man who mentors the IC mentors, Mzee Lakwiya--were there to mentally prepare the students for their upcoming UACE and UCE exams, tests that would help determine the paths their lives would take. “On Monday,” one speaker said, “you all will jump into hot soup. We’re here to help you get ready.””

Lukwiya’s relationship with Invisible Children goes back at least as far as early 2007, by several accounts.

In Spring 2007 - little more than a year and a half after Invisible Children nonprofit was launched - Paul Lukwiya is reported to have traveled with Invisible Children members to the United States, where he spoke before an April 28, 2007 Invisible Children Seattle rally. As John Niemeyer, who now manages Fellowship’s Restore Academy, wrote in a November 10, 2007 blog post, describing Mzee Paul Lukwiya,

“Mzee Paul... is the wisest, godliest old man. He oversees all of the Cornerstone schools, I think there are 5, and he wants to include Restore and Peter in all of his meetings, retreats etc. So that’s really cool, Cornerstone is what we are modeling our school after and there is no one better than him to help us shape the school.

Mzee actually went to San Diego last spring with Invisible Children (He oversees all the Cornerstone schools, oversees all the IC mentors and now helps oversee Restore Academy).”

Niemeyer’s account of Lukwiya traveling to San Diego with Invisible Children during the Spring of 2007 is corroborated by an op-ed that appeared June 27, 2007 in the Forrest Grove News-Times, which described Paul Lukwiya as speaking at an April 28, 2007 5,000 person Invisible Children rally in Seattle.

Other indications of Lukwiya’s involvement with Invisible Children include footage of Lukwiya that can be seen on IC’s current website. In a video attached to text describing IC’s Schools For Schools program -- which has paired American schools with counterpart schools in Northern Uganda, for which the American schools have raised funds for rebuilding and educational improvement -- Lukwiya can clearly be seen (beginning at 4:55) though he is not identified.

    Leaders To Transform a Nation

In the video, which was originally posted in 2009, Invisible Children’s Africa Program Director Adam Finck described the function of IC’s mentor program, and its associated Legacy Scholarship Fund:

“The true success of each student depends on encouragement and investment from their specific mentor - who not only acts as a positive role model but also gives academic counseling, career guidance, spiritual support, and practical life skills to every student in the scholarship program.

Mentors are the key to supporting the next generation of leaders in Uganda.

      [...]

After more than two decades of war, a generation of young leaders is emerging in Northern Uganda - becoming more prepared each day to become the leaders of tomorrow.”

In a companion video, about Invisible Children’s Scholarship Program and also posted in 2009, Finck explains that IC’s approach is to use its resources to support “quality over quantity”, which is the title of the video subsection. States Finck,

“Rather than using our funds to put as many students in school as possible, we made a choice - to invest in the most outstanding future leaders. We take a deep and comprehensive approach, equipping students with the necessary supplies and, most importantly, with a mentor, to help them realize their full potential.”

The educational approach described by Finck closely resembles that of The Fellowship, as described in the November 2009 Cornerstone newsletter:

[Cornerstone magazine, November 2009] “The Cornerstone Leadership Academies(CLA) are “Advanced Level” boarding, high schools that aim at molding young people coming from poor backgrounds, but with high potential - into future leaders.

      [...]

In addition to the academic studies, the program involves a comprehensive discipleship program following the principles, precepts and person of Jesus.

      [...]

Most of these young people come from broken homes or grew up as orphans so the `Cornerstone family’ often becomes their extended family. Many are in positions of leadership at their respective colleges and the university. Others in more quiet ways are making a positive impact on those around them. The long term potential to influence this nation is increasingly becoming evident as we see the maturity and commitment exhibited in the lives of these future leaders who have come up through our programs.”

In the July 2008 edition of the Cornerstone newsletter, Cornerstone Leadership Academy graduate Mbaziira Josephats expresses the politicized, revolutionary ethic common to Fellowship members:

“[E]very movement that has caused significant positive impact in history - including Uganda’s own National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the more significant Jesus Movement has had simple yet profound principles shared by a committed band of friends. A small group deeply committed to each other with a shared vision. It only takes about 5% of the population to cause a revolution that influences the remaining 95 % For the Jesus Movement it was Peter, Paul, James and others. For NRM it might have been the likes of Museveni and Tumwine, and for COSA, it will have to be you and me!”

    NOTES

[1] David Bahati and The Fellowship

Spurious claims that David Bahati is not a leader of the Ugandan branch of The Fellowship are overwhelmingly contradicted by multiple sources including statements from Bob Hunter, Family member and spokesperson for The Fellowship in Uganda, who has referred to Bahati, on television and radio, as a Fellowship member, and reports from Ugandan government-controlled news services, which have identified Bahati as co-organizing The Fellowship’s Africa Youth Leadership Forum and note Bahati’s prominent presence, onstage with Ugandan First Lady Janet Museveni, at Fellowship events in Uganda.

Multiple issue of Cornerstone Development’s Cornerstone newsletter identify the African Youth Leadership Forum as a direct Cornerstone initiative. Working supervisor of The Fellowship’s Leadership Academy and associated educational programs in Uganda and across Africa Tim Kreutter wrote, in the July 2008 edition of the Cornerstone newsletter,

“The Prayer Breakfast movement around the world works to bring people in political leadership together across all the divides. And as the young people in our Cstone programs mature we see them gradually taking up this vision as it is very aligned with our own vision and values. So, we help organize and support the various National Prayer Breakfast groups and events around the region. We are also developing a “young wing” of this work which involves Universtity [sic] student leaders and is called the Africa Youth Leadership Forum.”

Kreutter went on to describe The Fellowship’s National Prayer Breakfast in Kenya that year, 2008, which was attended by the Kenyan President, Vice President, and Prime Minister, as well as U.S. Congressional Representative William E. Fauntroy.

According to an October 14, 2007 story from the New Vision news service concerning a 2007 meeting of the Africa Youth Leadership Forum (AYLF), MP David Bahati was one of the co-organizers of the AYLF :

“Ndorwa West MP David Bahati, one of the organisers, said the youth forum would become part of the activities of the annual National Prayer Breakfast.
“The forum is to mentor young leaders in good leadership skills and to respect God,” Bahati said.”

By one account, the ALYF has the direct support of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Close ties between David Bahati, the Musevenis, and the Fellowship in Uganda were in evidence in a June 21, 2011 New Vision story about “the inaugural dinner hosted by the Uganda Parliamentary Fellowship for members of the 9th Parliament at Sheraton Hotel Kampala” at which Janet Museveni was the head guest of honor. As the story, which featured a photograph of “Mama” Janet greeting MP David Bahati onstage at the event, described,

“Mrs. Museveni asked leaders to take up their responsibilities in building a firm foundation for a better Uganda.

“With God on our side and Ugandans really working together for the good of our prosperity, nothing is impossible,” she added.

Mrs. Museveni said if Africa is to overcome its social and economic disgrace the world over Africans must abandon idolatry because God judges it severely.

She congratulated the parliamentary fellowship members for keeping it alive and maintaining a spiritual presence in parliament through the years.

      [...]

The chairman of the parliamentary fellowship, David Bahati, said the caucus of God is bigger than all other caucuses and does not discriminate against political affiliations.

The parliamentary fellowship was founded in 1986 by the late Hon. Balaki Kirya, and has since 1991 been organising a prayer breakfast on every October 8.

Bahati said the fellowship, initiated some bills like the Anti- Homosexuality and Anti-Pornography believes in a God led country and God led policies.”

As quoted in the February 29, 2012 New York Times story Resentment Toward the West Bolsters Uganda’s New Anti-Gay Bill, MP Bahati directly credited The Fellowship with inspiring the Anti Homosexuality Bill:

“It was in the United States, Mr. Bahati contended, that he first became close with a group of influential social conservatives, including politicians, known as The Fellowship, which would later become a base of inspiration and technical support for the anti-homosexuality bill.

Mr. Bahati said the idea for the bill first sprang from a conversation with members of The Fellowship in 2008, because it was “too late” in America to propose such legislation. Now, he said, he feels abandoned.”

    [2]

Invisible Children’s early support from Inhofe & Museveni

As the syndicated Religion News Service reported, in a story published April 27, 2006 in the San Diego Union-Tribune,

“Invisible Children Inc. has garnered political support from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and U.S. Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who sponsored a nonbinding Senate resolution last month calling for the American government to help bring down the rebel army.

“They see something that’s an atrocity that has to be corrected, and they’re willing to devote a good part of their lives to correct this,” Inhofe said of Invisible Children. “And if they can do that, we can help them as best we can.””

Invisible Children came to Senator Inhofe’s attention even earlier - Inhofe mentioned seeing Invisible Children’s first film during a February 2, 2006 statement before the United States Senate.

Inhofe has also been one of the U.S. Senators, along with another Family (Fellowship) member, former U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, who has taken the lead in promoting the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, signed into law May 2010 by President Obama.

One of the controversial provisions of the bill was a provision to team up the United States military to the Ugandan military, to hunt for Joseph Kony. In a 2005 ruling ( http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/116/10521.pdf ), from the International Court of Justice at the Hague, Uganda and the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces were accused of a range of human rights violations and atrocities in Northern Uganda and the DRC Congo. Recently, the UPDF has also been implicated in supporting Congo warlord Thomas Lubanga, now on trial by the International Criminal Court for human rights violations in the DRC Congo. The UPDF has also been charged, in 2012 by Western human rights groups, with committing rape and looting in the Congo while searching for Joseph Kony. Accusations against President Yoweri Museveni include charges of a planned, slow genocide committed against the Acholi people of Northern Uganda

    [3]

As Cornerstone Leadership Academy Rwanda graduate Samuel Birondwa expressed in the July 2009 Cornerstone newsletter,

“The Lord has enabled us to champion a unique outreach to high school students called the “Vision Conference” (Proverbs 29:18). And, we are involving students from all different religious backgrounds. Our vision is to transform these young people who will in turn transform others, thus transforming society. It is an attempt to reach out to a greater number of young people with the concepts found in our Discipleship material. Our objectives are:

      1. To preach the Gospel by lifting up Jesus alone - who is our common ground - across all divisions.
      2. To promote unity and reconciliation.
      3. To encourage abstinence until marriage by emphasizing sexual integrity and HIV/AIDS sensitization. (Our students have created a movie on this to be launched at the next conference.)
      4. To encourage hard work through community service.”

Clinton: Coe’s a “Spiritual Mentor”. Dagbladet: He’s a “Hitler Admirer”
— Bruce Wilson | Talk to Action
— Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 08:54:53 AM EST

On April 23, 2008 the UK Daily Mail reported on a new doll being marketed in the Ukraine, a Hitler doll with suitably Hitlerian attire and “a spare head” which, should demand for the doll be high enough said a spokesperson for the manufacturer, could lead to “a series of themed Third Reich toys, including interiors of Hitler’s chancellery, toy concentration camps with barbed wire, barracks and operating models of gas chambers and crematoriums.” Meanwhile, according to Norwegian journalist Tore Gjerstad, “Fellowship” head Doug Coe, described by Hillary Clinton as “loving” and a “spiritual mentor” but whom Gjerstad pegged as a “Hitler-admirer”, was on the move. Coe’s first stop: a meeting with the King of Norway...

    < snip image >

Earlier this week, the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, which has a circulation of roughly 140,000, ran a story, entitled (translated from the original Norwegian) “Hitler-admirer Received by King.”, about “Family” head Doug Coe’s visit to Norway, where Coe met with the Norwegian King. In the Dagbladet story, journalist Tore Gjerstad quoted Coe, from recordings of Coe’s sermons, lauding the commitment of young Chinese Red Guard men, who decapitated their parents, and enthusing over the organizational methods and organizing prowess of Hitler, Lenin and Mao. Hillary Clinton, who denies having any links to Coe and his group, nonetheless has written of the “Fellowship” head as “a unique presence in Washington: a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God.”

By far the biggest break for this slowly emerging story on The Family/The Fellowship, almost certainly one of the most influential secret political networks on Earth, was in ABC’s April 3, 2008 exclusive, Political ties to a secretive religious group.

The NBC story featured a video in which “Fellowship” (or “Family”) head Doug Coe celebrated the political conviction of Chinese communists willing to lop off their own parent’s heads [with with axes, guillotines were probably not readily available] for the good of the state, but the ensuing minor hubbub didn’t quite convince the rest of mainstream media that the story trumped the hullabullulaballoo over sermons given by Barack Obama’s ex-pastor, Jeremiah Wright. Although, as detailed by NBC, there exist numerous ties between leading US politicians and Doug Coe, leader of the secretive, global fundamentalist religious group “The Fellowship”, who celebrates parental decapitation and waxes enthusiastic over the power inherent in the bond and covenant shared among Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler.

NBC’s story had the making of a great scandal but some essential plot elements and body parts were missing from the formula. It lacked celebrity draw, sure, but most importantly there were no obvious elements of sexual scandal. Dismembered heads are OK for shock value but there were no breasts, no starlets, no infidelity, nothing that would tend to rate a mention on Oprah, just the drab and pedestrian quality that seems to accompany the Fellowship’s furtive and almost unimaginable global influence - as compared to Sun Myung Moon and his florid rants against “free sex” and bizarre explanations on the divinely ordained “concave” and “convex” nature of human sexual organs, Doug Coe might as well be a bank teller, a mailman or a grocery clerk. And, he prefers it that way. Coe is, as described in a Time story which crowned him “The Stealth Persuader” and one of America’s 25 most influential evangelical leaders, the man in the dimly lit, smoky back room, brokering deals: you can’t quite see his face.

And, “The Fellowship” is one of the least libidinous organizations imaginable except to the extent that, as noted by Henry Kissinger during his “playboy” period as Richard Nixon’s National Security Adviser, power is the “ultimate aphrodesiac”. The story lacked obvious sexual protrusions and thus got little media oxygen and was quickly overwhelmed by the daily press of events such as Brittney Spears’ minor fender-bender. The Family/Fellowship story has simmered down since NBC’s April 3rd story but perhaps Dagbladet’s coverage, migrating back over the Atlantic, will rekindle interest in a group lying, as Sharlet puts it, “at the heart of American power.” .

As Sharlet and Joyce put it, in “Hillary’s Prayer”,

“...Coe uses his access to the Oval Office as currency with lesser leaders. “If Doug Coe can get you some face time with the President of the United States,” one official told the author of a Princeton study of the National Prayer Breakfast last year, “then you will take his call and seek his friendship. That’s power.” ... “If you’re going to do religion in public life,” concurs (Reverend Rob) Schenck, a Jewish convert to fundamentalist Christianity who’s retained his sense of irony, Coe’s friendship is a kind of “kosher...seal of approval.”... Coe’s friends include former Attorney General John Ashcroft, Reaganite Edwin Meese III, and ultraconservative Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.). Under Coe’s guidance, Meese has hosted weekly prayer breakfasts for politicians, businesspeople, and diplomats, and Pitts rose from obscurity to head the House Values Action Team, an off-the-record network of religious right groups and members of Congress created by Tom DeLay. The corresponding Senate Values Action Team is guided by another Coe protégé, Brownback, who also claims to have recruited King Abdullah of Jordan into a regular study of Jesus’ teachings.”

IN response to that clinical take on the tangible poltical influece wielded by Doug Coe and The Fellowship, occasional Talk To Action contributor Tim Mitchell, in his October 2007 story With Friends Like These: When Religious Compromise Compromises Religious Freedom, wrote:

“If you want proof that the First Amendment is actually a sham and its defenders are actually in denial, Coe is it on the basis of these observations. Here’s a “shadowy figure”, a “back room” man who sounds like someone out of a John Gotti-like crime family, who uses his Christian influence to grant “friendship” to people who desire access to the White House. (One could only wonder what happens to people of faith who don’t win Coe’s “friendship”.) Coe’s associates are involved in another “off-the-record network of religious right groups and members of Congress”. Furthermore, on the basis of Schenck’s remark, in order for a politician to do something religious-based through the government, he would have to get approval from Coe, a conservative Christian evangelist--NOT the Constitution.”

    < snip image >

    As NBC’s story framed it,

For more than 50 years, the National Prayer Breakfast has been a Washington institution. Every president has attended the breakfast since Eisenhower, elbow-to-elbow with Democrats and Republicans alike. “I am really proud to carry on that tradition,” President Bush said at this year’s breakfast. “The people in this room come from many different walks of faith. Yet we share one clear conviction: We believe that the Almighty hears our prayers -- and answers those who seek Him.”

Besides the presidents and first ladies--Bill and Hillary Clinton attended in 1997--the one constant presence at the National Prayer Breakfast has been Douglas Coe. Although he’s not an ordained minister, the 79-year-old Coe is the most important religious leader you’ve never seen or heard.

Quoted in the NBC piece, journalist Jeff Sharlet described, on his time living with “Fellowship” members in a sex-segregated Washington DC group home owned by The Fellowship - which Sharlet wrote about in his landmark 2003 Harper’s story “Jesus Plus Nothing: Undercover Among America’s Secret Theocrats” :

“We were being taught the leadership lessons of Hitler, Lenin and Mao and I’d say ‘Isn’t there a problem with that ?’ and they would even seem genuinely perplexed by the question. Hitler’s genocide wasn’t an issue for them. It was the strength that he emulated... they jokingly call themselves the Christian mafia.”

Is Doug Coe, as described by Hillary Clinton, “a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God” or is he, as identified in the April 21, 2008 edition of the Danish newspaper Dagbladet, a “Hitler admirer” ? In response to the April 3, 2008 NBC story Hillary Clinton denied any ties to Coe’s group regardless of of her own description of Coe as a friend and “spiritual mentor”. The answer depends on who one talks with.

Of course, Senator Hillary Clinton is not responsible for every word to issue from the mouth of “Family” head Doug Coe. Nor should she be.

But there are deeper issues involved here, and given that Clinton joined a an elite prayer cell of “The Family” back in early 1990’s it would seem appropriate for Clinton to address her current relationship with the group. According to a September 1, 2007 Mother Jones story, Hillary’s Prayer: Hillary Clinton’s Religion and Politics, by Jeff Sharlet and Kathryn Joyce, Senator Hillary Clinton’s maintains a current relationship to “The Fellowship”/”Family” and there seem to exist also ideological and theological resonances between Clinton’s views and views espoused by “The Fellowship”. Such resonances might be evidenced, for example, in Hillary Clinton’s early support for “Charitable Choice” provisions [described as “radical” by Fellowship member David Kuo who helped draft the provisions while working with then Senator John Ashcroft, another Fellowship member] inserted by John Ashcroft in the 1996 ‘Welfare Reform’ bill that was then signed into law by Bill Clinton. Clinton’s motivations for supporting those “charitable coice” provisions might not have been exactly the same as those of Kuo and Ashcroft but Clinton’s support did not seem antagonistic to one of the long range goals of The Family: unmaking the government social programs of Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Why was Doug Coe meeting with the King of Norway ?

Coe’s access to European royalty supports the claims of David Kuo, former second in command at the White House Office of Faith Based Initiatives, that the fundamentalist, sex-segregated group “The Family”, which organizes in “prayer cells” in a structure favored by communist revolutionary groups, wields, at the international level, almost inconceivable influence and that influence is not always benign. As journalist Jeff Sharlet, author of an upcoming book, “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power”“ due to be released May 20th wrote in his landmark 2003 expose’ “Jesus Plus Nothing: Undercover Among America’s Secret Theocrats”,

During the 1960s the Family forged relationships between the U.S. government and some of the most anti-Communist (and dictatorial) elements within Africa’s postcolonial leadership. The Brazilian dictator General Costa e Silva, with Family support, was overseeing regular fellowship groups for Latin American leaders, while, in Indonesia, General Suharto (whose tally of several hundred thousand “Communists” killed marks him as one of the century’s most murderous dictators) was presiding over a group of fifty Indonesian legislators. During the Reagan Administration the Family helped build friendships between the U.S. government and men such as Salvadoran general Carlos Eugenios Vides Casanova, convicted by a Florida jury of the torture of thousands, and Honduran general Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, himself an evangelical minister, who was linked to both the CIA and death squads before his own demise.

At its root, “The Family”, or “The Fellowship” (its name and legal organizational structure is has changed over time) is profoundly anti-democratic; the group had its origin in the early Twentieth Century reactionary counter-offensive, by economic elites, to combat the supposed spread of communist and socialist ideology in the United States and the Fellowship M.O. - elite gatherings of wealthy businessmen and political elites in “prayer breakfasts” and “prayer cells” - is more akin in spirit to that Italian fascism, under Mussolini, which was widely admired in America of the 1920’s and 1930’s and whose symbols were in fact embedded (as I’ll cover in an upcoming special report) in certain US government buildings constructed during the period.

Invisible Children Funded By Antigay, Creationist Christian Right

[update: subsequent research shows that Invisible Children has extensive social and institutional ties to The Fellowship (also called “The Family”), the Washington D.C. based evangelical global network which has been credited, by the bill’s co-author MP David Bahati, with inspiring and even providing “technical support” for Uganda’s Anti Homosexuality Bill, often called the “kill the gays bill”. See this subsequent 7,000 word report]

What does Invisible Children share in common with the Discovery Institute, the leading organization promoting “Intelligent Design”, a pseudo-scientific theory created to insinuate creationist ideas into public schools -- or with The Call, whose leader Lou Engle claims homosexuals are possessed by demons, calls God an “avenger of blood” and a “terrorist”, and in May 2010 staged a rally in Kampala, Uganda, at which Engle warned of a gay menace to society and shared a stage with one of the authors of Uganda’s notorious Anti Homosexuality Bill ?

990 IRS tax forms and yearly reports from Invisible Children, and 990s from its major donors, tell a story that’s jarringly at odds with the secular, airbrushed, feelgood image the nonprofit has cultivated.

Among the tens of millions of people who have watched Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 viral video, including Oprah Winfrey - a dedicated supporter of LGBT rights who also has given $2 million dollars to Invisible Children, how many were aware of IC’s extensive financial ties to far-right fundamentalism, including major funders of the mounting global war on gay rights ? IC doesn’t go out of its way to advertise these things.

But Invisible Children’s first yearly report, from 2006, gives “special thanks” to the “Caster Family Foundation” and IC’s 2007 report is more specific, thanking Terry and Barbara Caster. In the lead up to the 2008 election, the California-based Caster family was identified as one of the biggest financial backers of the push for California’s anti-same sex marriage Proposition 8.

Capping the pro-Prop 8 push was a November 1, 2008 San Diego stadium rally held by The Call, whose leader Lou Engle warned that same sex marriage could unleash a “sexual insanity” that would be “more demonic than Islam” and suggested believers should carry out acts of martyrdom to stop gay marriage and legal abortion, which Engle predicts will lead to a second American civil war.

One of The Call’s major donors in 2008 also gave, that same year, over 400,000 dollars to Invisible Children. These links weren’t anomalies. They were part of a pattern.

What does Invisible Children share in common with James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council (pegged by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “hate group”), or the Fellowship Foundation --- one of the nonprofit entities of the Washington-based evangelical organization also known as “The Family” (covered in two books by journalist Jeff Sharlet) whose leader Doug Coe has been captured on video celebrating the dedication inspired by Hitler, Lenin, and Mao ?

What does IC have in common with the ministry of California evangelist Ed Silvoso, who works directly with leading Ugandan author and promoter of the Anti Homosexuality Bill (also called the “kill the gays bill”) Julius Oyet -- who claims that “even animals are wiser than homosexuals”?

The answer? -- all of these ministries - the Discovery Institute, Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, The Fellowship Foundation, The Call, Ed Silvoso’s Harvest Evangelism, and Invisible Children - received at least $100,000 in 2008 from what has emerged in the last decade as the biggest funder of the hard, antigay, creationist Christian right: the National Christian Foundation.

2008 grants from National Christian Foundation, and subsidiaries

      Focus on The Family: $4,268,000
      Family Research Council: $2,387,000
The Fellowship Foundation (AKA “The Family” or the “International Foundation”): $515,000
      Lou Engle’s The Call: $166,000
      Ed Silvoso’s Harvest Evangelism: $817,000
      The Discovery Institute: $702,000*
      Invisible Children: $414,000*

      *NCF’s 2008 990 lists $139,000 to IC; NCF subsidiary ProVision Foundation’s 2008 990 lists a $150,000 grant to IC; NCF subsidiary ProVision Trust’s 2008 990 lists a $125,000 grant to IC.
*Answers in Genesis, which directly promotes “Young Earth” creationism, received over $35,000 from the NCF in 2008.

Since it came into existence in 1982, cooked up by canny tax lawyers, the National Christian Foundation--covered in a story by journalist Michael Reynolds published in the December 2005 issue of Mother Jones (extended version of story available here)-- has swollen into a financial behemoth that disperses over 1/2 a billion dollars a year to Christian charities. But not just any Christian charities.

The NCF, which counts billionaire, controversial Rick Santorum-backer Foster Friess among its donors, funds nonprofits that advance its agenda which, as stated on the NCF website, is to “enable followers of Christ to give wisely to advance His Kingdom”.

(Joining with Foster Friess, as one of the top 2 donors to Rick Santorum’s Red, White, and Blue Fund Super-PAC, was Templeton Foundation head Dr. John Templeton, Jr. - who donated $35,000 to Invisible Children in 2007 according to the group’s 2007 990.)

The National Christian Foundation’s statement of belief is solidly fundamentalist: “We believe that the entire Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God; the only infallible rule of faith and practice.” Also stated on NCF’s website:

“Our board members know they are charged with a great responsibility. Their goal is to make certain every dollar that comes to us is ultimately distributed according to our Christian mission”

2008 wasn’t the first year Invisible Children benefited from National Christian Foundation largesse - IC’s 2007 990 tax form lists three grants, totaling $350,000, from NCF subsidiary the ProVision Foundation (which is also specifically thanked in IC’s 2007 and 2008 annual reports).

Invisible Children’s first filed 990 tax form, for the calender year running from mid 2005 to mid 2006, listed a $30,000 cash donation, IC’s biggest cash gift that year, from another fundamentalist granting organization, based in Colorado Springs, called the Christian Community Foundation, Inc. (also known as “Waterstone”)

In 2009, CCF assets surpassed $138,000,000 and the foundation made over $20,000,000 in grants, including $365,000 to the Family Research Council and $297,000 to Focus on The Family, as well as small grants to Answers in Genesis and the Fellowship Foundation.

The membership of the Christian Community Foundation, Inc.’s board of directors overlaps with board membership of National Christian Foundation subsidiaries; what this suggests is that, from its first calendar year, Invisible Children had appeared on the radar screen of some of the world’s largest Christian fundamentalist grant-making organizations--which apparently deemed Invisible Children to be a worthy investment that would help advance particular visions for establishing God’s kingdom on Earth.

IC was also on the radar screen, judging by his $5,218 donation listed on the Invisible Children 2006 990 tax form, of Philip Anschutz - the reclusive, Colorado-based devout Christian billionaire, dubbed the “stealth media mogul”, who was in 2007 worth an estimated $6.7 billion dollars.

According to journalist Bill Berkowitz, Anschutz has helped fund the Discovery Institute and supported Colorado’s 1992 anti-gay marriage Amendment 2. In 2005 Anschutz co-produced, in conjunction with Walt Disney Pictures, the Christian-themed fantasy film “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.”

Along with the pro-Proposition 8 Caster Family, another backer specifically thanked in Invisible Children’s first yearly report was the Circle Family Foundation, also known as “Malachi 3”, a small foundation which funds a stable of ministries including Campus Crusade For Christ, whose founder the late Bill Bright patterned his ministry along the lines of revolutionary communist cell groups.

Bright, who once declared himself to be “involved in a conspiracy with thousands of others to ‘overthrow the world’”, also helped birth the dominionist “Seven Mountains” mandate, which instructs believers to take control of significant sectors of society and culture including: media, arts and entertainment, government, business and finance, the family, religion, and education.

[note: this story explores almost wholly overlooked ties between the Invisible Children nonprofit and the politicized fundamentalist right. It is not intended as a dedicated critique of Invisible Children’s effort to publicize Joseph Kony and the LRA, or the nonprofit’s conduct generally. Subsequent installments will address those issues. For a very different profile of American evangelical involvement in Uganda, see my 20-minute documentary video Transforming Uganda, cited in 2010 testimony before Congress.]

[update: Why does it matter, if Invisible Children was funded by controversial donors? Two reasons - one, we can assume those donors thought IC aligned with their agenda - which is antagonistic to LGBT rights. Two, it fits an emerging pattern in which Invisible Children appears selectively concerned about crimes committed by Joseph Kony but indifferent to crimes, perhaps on a bigger scale, committed by their provisional partner, the government of Uganda - whose president shot his way into power using child soldiers, before Joseph Kony began using child soldiers. While Kony was *indicted, by the International Criminal Court, in 2005 for crimes against humanity, the government of Uganda was charged that same year, in 2005, by the International Court of Justice, for human rights abuses and looting in the DRC Congo (PDF file of ICJ ruling against Uganda). Like Kony, the Ugandan army has been accused of preying upon civilians and is currently accused, by Western human rights groups, with raping and looting in the DRC Congo, where it is hunting for Kony. In the late 1990s, Uganda helped spark a conflict in DRC Congo that, by the middle of the next decade it is estimated, had killed up to 5.4 million civilians, more than any conflict since World War Two. See appended “Resource” section for more information. For a very different perspective on IC, Kony, and Northern Uganda, see this editorial by Milton Allimadi, of the NYC-based Blackstar news service]

*Note: this story originally identified the 2005 charges against the government of Uganda as coming from the International Criminal Court. That was incorrect - my thanks to Milton Allimadi, of Blackstar News, for pointing out the error. As Allimadi wrote in his March 8, 2011 Blackstar News editorial (also linked above),

“Kony is a nightmare, but Museveni has caused the deaths of millions of people in Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. In 2005 the International Court of Justice found Uganda liable for what amounts to war crimes in Congo: mass rapes of both women and men; disemboweling pregnant women; burning people inside their homes alive; massacres and; plunder of resources. Congo lost six million people after Uganda’s occupation of parts of Congo. The Court awarded Congo $10 billion in reparations; not a dime has been paid. Congo then referred the same crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague for war crimes charges. On June 8, 2006, The Wall Street Journal reported that Gen. Museveni personally contacted Kofi Annan, then UN Secretary General and asked him to block the criminal investigation.”

Racists and dominionists, part 1: A troubling history
— Daily Kos | by dogemperor
— Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 08:15 AM PDT

Today, I begin part one of what will be a two or three part series on a secret that the dominionists very much want kept under the bed, so to speak.

Not only are many of the leaders of the dominionist group hateful in and of themselves to LGBT folks and others, it turns out that quite a number of them--including some of the leaders of the dominionist movement like the heads of the Family Research Council, anti-abortion groups, and even Ken Blackwell and John Ashcroft--are linked to some of the most virulent racist and domestic-terrorist groups in the US.

And--as we’ll see in today’s post--this has a very long history, including Christian Identity’s origins in dominion theology (yes, really!) and the oldest dominionist group in the US’s ties with American Nazi groups in the 30’s.

Partly because of a recent post on Salon Magazine regarding Justice Sunday III and other replies I’ve made on this subject, I’ve decided it’s time to do a dedicated post on a subject that--if we could promote this to the world at large--has the potential to blow the dominionist movement apart.

That subject is the longstanding connections between dominionism, especially the “premillenial dispensationalist” and Christian Reconstructionist flavours of dominionism--and hardcore racist groups like the Klan, Neo-Nazi groups, and Christian Identity.

And yes, this even includes one of the speakers at Justice Sunday III who has done speeches for Christian Identity churches and “Christian Militia” groups tied to them.

The thing that gave me the idea to do this article was an interesting note on how David Barton--one of the speakers at Justice Sunday III--has connections to racist groups.

Part 1: Roots of dominionism...and early links to racism

Most people do not realise how long, and how deep, the connections between dominionism and racism go.

Interestingly, premillenial dispensationalist flavours of dominionism and Christian Identity (a perversion of Christianity that teaches that white people are the actual Israelis and that black people, actual Jews, etc. are “mud people”) actually can be documented to have come from the same root.

The following article, which details about Aimee Semple McPherson (one of the world’s first “televangelists”, an early Assemblies of God preacher who later split and founded the International Foursquare church), notes how early the links go:

Daniel Mark Epstein writes in “Sister Aimee: The Life of Aimee Semple McPherson,” of her background with Jeffreys.

“She called her religion the Foursquare Gospel, after a vision she had in Oakland in 1922. Aimee was preaching on the prophet Ezekiel’s vision of Man, Lion, Ox and Eagle, when suddenly she began to shake with emotion. She saw in the mysterious symbols ‘a complete Gospel for body, for soul, for spirit and eternity.’ ... Those four cornerstones -- Regeneration, Baptism in the Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Second Coming -- upheld an evangelistic association called the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance, which George Jeffreys founded in Ireland in 1915. He and his brother Stephen were England’s greatest evangelists after Wesley and Whitefield, and Aimee had worked with Jeffreys. The Elim Foursquare Gospel influenced the American Assemblies of God, which embraced the same four principles before Aimee had her vision in Oakland in 1922.” 66

(Footnotes: 66. “Sister Aimee: The Life of Aimee Semple McPherson,” Daniel Mark Epstein; Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Pub., 1993, pp. 264-65.)

Later in the article, it notes:

This Mercaba symbol of the ox, man, lion and eagle are the same symbols used for British Israel, George Jeffrey’s Elim Movement, and Aimee Semple Mcpherson’s Foursquare.

“...British-Israelism is a religious doctrine first elaborated in 19th century England as a justification for British colonialism. It claimed that the English Anglo-Saxons were one of the so-called “ten lost tribes of Israel,” and that the British monarch was the direct descendant of “the throne of King David.” In short, the British were “God’s Chosen People.” The British-Israel movement spread to Canada and the US at the turn of the century.... The Canadian British-Israel Association (CBIA), through its Internet website, sells a wide variety of white racist and anti-Jewish religious propaganda. At least 40 of its books are by Howard Rand and Destiny Publishers. Rand was the major figure in establishing British-Israelism in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s...”

British Israelism spawned the Christian Identity movement, which was incorporated in Los Angeles in 1948. Spawned from it are the Posse Comitatus, Aryan Nations, The Christian Patriot branch, The Committee of the States, the Unorganized Militia and other white supremacy swill.

“...Wesley Swift’s Church of Jesus Christ Christian was initially a racist sect which became Christian Identity. The central belief in Identity doctrine is the existence of two races on earth: a godly white race descended from Adam and a satanic race fathered by Satan. Swift, a Klan leader and preacher at Amy Semple McPherson’s Foursquare Church in Los Angles, was never able to make much of a success out of his doctrine, but it attracted several people who became central to what was later named “Christian Identity”: San Jacinto Capt, William Potter Gale and Richard Girnt Butler.”

“Capt was a California Klan leader and a believer in British Israelism, a doctrine which holds that the Israelites of the Bible are not the Jews, but rather Aryan/Anglo-Saxons. Gale was a stock-broker and former Army officer who briefly served on Gen. MacArthur’s staff in the Philippines. Gale in turn recruited Butler to Swift’s church during the 1950’s. In 1970, Swift died, triggering a dispute between Gale and Butler. Ultimately, Butler assumed control and moved the church to Idaho, where he renamed it Aryan Nations - Church of Jesus Christ Christian.” 69.

Along with Charles Parham, William Branham, reportedly also KKK, taught the “two seed” theory.

        * “Now remember, Satan’s son was Cain...”
        * “Now remember that Eve got pregnant by Satan, and in the same day...” 70.

The “two seed” theory can be found in a number of variations, however it, “...is the central tenet of Identity doctrine and the basic justification for Christian Patriots’ racism and anti-Semitism. The essence of the “two seed” theory is that there are two races on earth: one godly and one satanic.”

“According to the racist and anti-Semitic “two seed” theory, the white “Adamic” peoples descended from the union of Adam and Eve. But there was also another race beginning with Cain whose father was not Adam, but Satan -- who mated with Eve in the guise of a serpent. The descendants of Cain became known as the Jews. The Adamic peoples became the Aryans or Anglo-Saxons. The Pre-Adamic (non-white) races were not human at all, but descendants of the “beasts of the fields” described in Genesis, without souls and no more than cattle in the eyes of their Aryan betters. All three races could interbreed, but the non-Adamic blood acted like a poison to exterminate the Aryan race. In the eyes of white supremacists, race-mixing became a Satanic plot to exterminate God’s chosen people, the white race.”

“By the “two seed” theory, Jesus was not a Jew, but an Aryan. The Adamic (Aryan) people were the lost tribes of Israel, fled to northern Europe and later became the Christian nations. There are many corollaries to the “two seed” theory which provide justification for racists to claim God’s favor...”71

Obviously these teachings are totally against the Word of God. From the Pamphlet, Signs of the Supernatural, a quote from a 1961 Voice, the magazine of the Full Gospel Business Men International, which said, “...’In Bible Days, there were men of God who were Prophets and Seers. But in all the Sacred records, none of these had a greater ministry than that of William Branham.”

    (Footnotes: 69. Christian Patriots At War with the State; Paul de Armond;

    71. op.cit. de Armand)

As I’ve discussed before in my articles on dominion theology on DailyKos, “serpent seed” theology actually originated within dominionist groups--and in fact is still used by the “spiritual warfare” crowd to claim that opponents of dominionism are the literal children of the devil. The split between dominionism proper and Christian Identity occured in 1948 when the Church of Jesus Christ Christian was founded--as a split from International Foursquare.

There are a few bits of note here--William Branham was one of the first practitioners in the AoG and other pentecostal groups of what would later be termed “dominion theology”--the word-faith aka “name it and claim it” movement originates from him, as do aspects of “latter rain” theology. Charles Fox Parham, also mentioned in the article, is the actual founder of pentecostal sects including the Assemblies of God and at least one other source notes Parnham’s influence in their early theology. The AoG itself has had a long historical record of involvement with dominionism--the term “dominion theology” actually arises from theology in the word-faith movement that claims that illness occurs because “Satan presently has dominion” and that pentecostals (being the only truly “saved” individuals) must “take dominion” of all things to secure God’s blessing over them and participate in “spiritual warfare”.

The other group of note is the group that can be truthfully stated to have been the first dominionist group in the US in action, if not in name--the Full Gospel Businessmens’ Fellowship International. FGBMFI was started by an AoG preacher and effectively operates as a “business outreach” of the Assemblies, and can legitimately be seen as a front group of that denomination; they are also responsible for promotion of dominionism throughout the AoG (and even to other non-pentecostal groups--the FGBMFI is a major promoter of “sheep stealing” and infiltration of mainstream Christian churches) and is also the source of spread of most of the spiritually abusive practices within the Assemblies of God, including the theological basis for dominionism in that denomination:

(from a preliminary list of groups that may be front-groups of, or effectively run by, the Assemblies of God):

Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International (a front group of the AoG targeting businessmen and other professionals; has been associated with coercive Yoido Full Gospel Church in Korea (which is the church that originated the “Third Wave” aka “Brownsville” stuff and other coercive tactics in the AoG); per multiple reports is associated with spiritual abuse as well as dominionist planning and may be particularly responsible for dominionist infiltration of the military; per this article and this article group has falsely advertised itself as interfaith group but rejects non-dominionists).

There is even some evidence that the FGBMFI may have been the original source promoting dominionism in the Southern Baptist Convention.

Going a bit further from the Assemblies of God in particular (the fact that the denomination is hip-deep within the dominionist movement, and may be its actual originator, is quite well documented especially on sites like Yurica Report and Deception In The Church) and looking at the whole “British Israelism” thing in general--the two main descendents of that theology are pentecostals (who believe that they along with the Jewish people are the “chosen people” and--in “dominion theology” popular in pentecostal circles--must create a theocracy to “secure God’s blessing”) and Christian Identity (which rejects outright the idea of Jews being, well, Jewish).

Another group known as the “Fellowship” or the “Family”--a secretive association of dominionist politicians and others that can be regarded as the first documented dominionist group in the US--has an even more ignoble history of links with racists. The Harper’s Magazine article Jesus Plus Nothing notes how the Fellowship (aka the Family) is still incredibly influential:

Ivanwald, which sits at the end of Twenty-fourth Street North in Arlington, Virginia, is known only to its residents and to the members and friends of the organization that sponsors it, a group of believers who refer to themselves as “the Family.” The Family is, in its own words, an “invisible” association, though its membership has always consisted mostly of public men. Senators Don Nickles (R., Okla.), Charles Grassley (R., Iowa), Pete Domenici (R., N.Mex.), John Ensign (R., Nev.), James Inhofe (R., Okla.), Bill Nelson (D., Fla.), and Conrad Burns (R., Mont.) are referred to as “members,” as are Representatives Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), Frank Wolf (R., Va.), Joseph Pitts (R., Pa.), Zach Wamp (R., Tenn.), and Bart Stupak (D., Mich.). Regular prayer groups have met in the Pentagon and at the Department of Defense, and the Family has traditionally fostered strong ties with businessmen in the oil and aerospace industries. The Family maintains a closely guarded database of its associates, but it issues no cards, collects no official dues. Members are asked not to speak about the group or its activities.

The organization has operated under many guises, some active, some defunct: National Committee for Christian Leadership, International Christian Leadership, the National Leadership Council, Fellowship House, the Fellowship Foundation, the National Fellowship Council, the International Foundation. These groups are intended to draw attention away from the Family, and to prevent it from becoming, in the words of one of the Family’s leaders, “a target for misunderstanding.” [1] The Family’s only publicized gathering is the National Prayer Breakfast, which it established in 1953 and which, with congressional sponsorship, it continues to organize every February in Washington, D.C. Each year 3,000 dignitaries, representing scores of nations, pay $425 each to attend. Steadfastly ecumenical, too bland most years to merit much press, the breakfast is regarded by the Family as merely a tool in a larger purpose: to recruit the powerful attendees into smaller, more frequent prayer meetings, where they can “meet Jesus man to man.”

In the process of introducing powerful men to Jesus, the Family has managed to effect a number of behind-the-scenes acts of diplomacy. In 1978 it secretly helped the Carter Administration organize a worldwide call to prayer with Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat, and more recently, in 2001, it brought together the warring leaders of Congo and Rwanda for a clandestine meeting, leading to the two sides’ eventual peace accord last July. Such benign acts appear to be the exception to the rule. “We work with power where we can,” the Family’s leader, Doug Coe, says, “build new power where we can’t.”

At the 1990 National Prayer Breakfast, George H.W. Bush praised Doug Coe for what he described as “quiet diplomacy, I wouldn’t say secret diplomacy,” as an “ambassador of faith.” Coe has visited nearly every world capital, often with congressmen at his side, “making friends” and inviting them back to the Family’s unofficial headquarters, a mansion (just down the road from Ivanwald) that the Family bought in 1978 with $1.5 million donated by, among others, Tom Phillips, then the C.E.O. of arms manufacturer Raytheon, and Ken Olsen, the founder and president of Digital Equipment Corporation.

Less well known is the fact that the Fellowship partnered with Nazis--yes, as in old-school Nazis--before World War II in what may have been a literal act of treason. The article “Christian Mafia” details more:

The roots of the Fellowship go back to the 1930s and a Norwegian immigrant and Methodist minister named Abraham Vereide. According to Fellowship archives maintained at the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College in Illinois, Vereide, who immigrated from Norway in 1905, began an outreach ministry in Seattle in April 1935. But his religious outreach involved nothing more than pushing for an anti-Communist, anti-union, anti-Socialist, and pro-Nazi German political agenda. A loose organization and secrecy were paramount for Vereide. Fellowship archives state that Vereide wanted his movement to “carry out its objective through personal, trusting, informal, unpublicized contact between people.” Vereide’s establishment of his Prayer Breakfast Movement for anti-Socialist and anti-International Workers of the World (IWW or “Wobblies”) Seattle businessmen in 1935 coincided with the establishment of another pro-Nazi German organization in the United States, the German-American Bund. Vereide saw his prayer movement replacing labor unions.

(The German-American Bund was a group that can legitimately be termed an American Nazi party (it was formed from the merger of two groups, one of which was the American branch of the NSDAP--the Nazi party itself). Eventually, the group was outlawed during World War II and many of its members arrested and interned for the duration as literal enemy agents.)

In other words, the whole thing was started by someone who was a sympathiser to Nazis--not neo-Nazis, the old-school kind of Nazis who killed thirteen million people in Europe.

The links don’t stop there. One of the links, of interest, is to the very person who sold Norway out to the Nazis and inspired the term “quisling” for a traitor sell-soul:

One philosophical fellow traveler of Vereide was the German Nazi philosopher Martin Heidegger, a colleague of Leo Strauss, the father of American neo-conservatism and the mentor of such present-day American neo-conservatives as Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz. Strauss’s close association with Heidegger and the Nazi idea of telling the big lie in order to justify the end goals - Machiavellianism on steroids -- did not help Strauss in Nazi Germany. Because he was Jewish, he was forced to emigrate to the United States, where he eventually began teaching neo-conservative political science at the University of Chicago. It is this confluence of right-wing philosophies that provides a political bridge between modern-day Christian Rightists (including so-called Christian Zionists) and the secular-oriented neo-conservatives who support a policy that sees a U.S.-Israeli alliance against Islam and European-oriented democratic socialism. For the dominion theologists, the United States is the new Israel, with a God-given mandate to establish dominion over the entire planet. Neither the secular neo-conservatives nor Christian fundamentalists seem to have a problem with the idea of American domination of the planet, as witnessed by the presence of representatives of both camps as supporters of the neo-conservative Project for a New American Century, the neo-conservative blueprint for America’s attack on Iraq and plans to attack, occupy, and dominate other countries that oppose U.S. designs.

What bound all so-called “America First” movements prior to World War II was their common hatred for labor unions, Communists and Socialists, Jews, and most definitely, the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Vereide’s Prayer Breakfast Movement, pro-Nazi German groups like the Bund, and a resurgent Ku Klux Klan had more than propaganda in common - they had an interlocking leadership and a coordinated political agenda.

Not only was Vereide pro-Hitler, he was the only Norwegian of note, who was not officially a Nazi, who never condemned Norwegian Nazi leader Vidkun Quisling, a man whose name has become synonymous with traitor and who was executed in 1945. Vereide and Quisling were almost the same age, Vereide was born in 1886, Quisling in 1887. They both shared a link with the clergy, Vereide was a Methodist minister and Quisling was the son of a Lutheran minister. The Norwegian link to the Fellowship continues to this day but more on that later.

Interestingly, the article also details that many of the fundamentalist churches of the time were sympathetic to Nazis (largely because the Nazis were seen as anti-Communist)

It also seems the same tactics of demonisation were actively in force as early as the 1930’s from “The Fellowship” and its founder:

The Unsuccessful Right-Wing Coup Against a Democratic President

Vereide and Buchman had important allies on Wall Street. According to Marine Corps General Smedley Butler, shortly after Franklin Roosevelt was elected President in 1932, he was approached by a group of wealthy Republican industrialists to lead an anti-Roosevelt Fascist coup against the government. As with today’s Fellowship, Vereide and Buchman were merely front men for anti-Socialist big businesses who hid behind the façade of a Christian evangelical movement. To them and their bankrollers, Roosevelt was some sort of anti-Christ who was going to go to bat for the workers, blacks, the poor and women while, at the same time, menacing the ultra-rich and the rising Nazi and Fascist specter in Europe. The coup was to be financed mostly by the J. P. Morgan and Du Pont financial empires. General Butler, who had no time for these industrialists since his military forays into Central America and the Caribbean as a foot soldier on behalf of wealthy capitalists, rejected their overture. Gerald MacGuire, a Wall Street bond salesman and former Commander of the Connecticut American Legion, was the chief recruiter for the coup plot. Butler informed Congress of the plans for the coup. However, Congress was owned by Wall Street and no charges were ever brought against the plotters. Butler was incensed and went public but he was dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. Not until 1967, when journalist John Spivak uncovered the secret Congressional report, was Butler’s version of the events validated. In the report of the Special Committee to Investigate Nazi Propaganda Activities in the United States, Rep. Samuel Dickstein (D-NY) concluded that there was evidence of a coup plot by the right-wing against Roosevelt. However, much to Butler’s chagrin, no criminal action was taken against the plotters.

Butler said MacGuire’s plan was for Butler to force Roosevelt to declare he had become too sick from polio and create a powerful new Cabinet position, the Secretary of General Affairs, to run the government on his behalf. The New Deal, something the U.S. fascists and Nazis referred to as the “Jew Deal,” would have be scrapped. The comparison between the Secretary of General Affairs and the present Secretary of Homeland Security is striking. If Roosevelt did not agree to the coup plotters’ demand, a half million American Legion veterans would march on Washington to physically remove Roosevelt from office. But MacGuire decided that the perception management campaign would work and an armed force would not be required. He told Butler, “You know the American people will swallow that. We have got the newspapers. We will start a campaign that the President’s health is failing. Everyone can tell that by looking at him, and the dumb American people will fall for it in a second...” Shortly after his testimony before the House investigation committee, MacGuire died of pneumonia at the age of 37.

It is of note that “Christian Patriot” groups and even quite a few dominionists to this day condemn Roosevelt.

    It doesn’t stop there:

Meanwhile, Buchman’s co-ideologist Vereide made his first entrée into the U.S. Congress. In 1942, he began to hold small and discreet prayer breakfasts for the U.S. House of Representatives. The next year, the Senate began holding prayer breakfast meetings. Vereide’s Prayer Breakfast Movement was formally incorporated as the National Committee for Christian Leadership (NCCL). Its headquarters were in Chicago. In 1944, while Vereide’s friends in Germany were being pummeled by the Allies, especially by the Soviet Red Army, NCCL changed its name to International Christian Leadership (ICL), an indication that Vereide saw an immediate need to extend his influence abroad in the wake of a certain Nazi defeat. Vereide also made plans to move his headquarters to Washington, DC. In 1944, his first ICL Fellowship House was established in a private home at 6523 Massachusetts Avenue. In 1945, Vereide held his first joint Senate-House prayer breakfast meeting. In 1945, Vereide quickly got together a group of powerful right-wingers for a prayer breakfast following the death of President Roosevelt, one of Vereide’s and Buchman’s most despised politicians. Roosevelt did not comport with a President who followed the dictates of “God’s Will,” a major Vereide and Buchman principle. At the breakfast were Senators H. Alexander Smith (R-NJ), Lister Hill (D-AL), and World Report publisher David Lawrence. Lawrence was an ardent foe of the New Deal.

After President Truman announced that he was going to continue FDR’s programs - what he called the Fair Deal - the religious right of Republicans and southern Democrats decided to attack Truman. His vulnerability to charges that Communists were embedded in his administration would give rise to the cancer of McCarthyism. However, for the religious right of Vereide, Buchman, and their political allies, this was a necessary and God-driven form of political and moral cleansing. The radical right would also force Truman to consolidate power in a new post-war intelligence agency that would replace the Office of Strategic Services - the Central Intelligence Agency.

(No, the whole “Democrats are a bunch of satanists” slurs are nothing new. This group and the FGBMFI are pretty much the two big forces behind selling the Cold War as a literal Holy War to dominionists.)

Also (and this is the first I’ve read of this--it would be really nice to see some secondary confirmation) it seems George W. Bush may have been originally introduced to dominionism in a “faith-based coercion” program:

Bush had reason to be thankful to the Christian fundamentalists. They helped his son, George W. Bush, avoid a certain court martial and prison time. On or about April 18, 1972, the Houston Police arrested First Lieutenant George W. Bush of the Texas Air National Guard for possession of cocaine. Bush and a friend were booked into the Harris County jail. Bush’s father, who was serving as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, hurriedly flew to Houston from New York and began to make the required phone calls to keep his son from receiving a court martial, dishonorable discharge, and a prison sentence. As one senior Bush business partner recalled, then-Ambassador Bush knew that junior was in “deep shit.” Senior Bush arranged for his son to serve at a religious drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in San Diego between May and November 1972. Conservative San Diego was a major center for Fellowship activities.

The time Bush spent in religious rehab in San Diego represents part of the famous “gap” in Bush’s National Guard service record. According to a fitness report on Bush issued by the White House in 2004, Bush was “Not rated for the period 1 May 72 through 30 Apr 73. Report for this period not available for administrative reasons.” This represents the time Junior Bush was being shown the way from drugs to Jesus in San Diego and afterwards, his court-ordered community service penance in Houston. The senior Bush arranged to have the arrest record on Junior expunged and even his name removed from the police blotter. Later, a ruse that Junior Bush went to Alabama to work on the Republican Senate campaign of Winton Blount was concocted to throw off nosy opposition research investigators and journalists. The deception worked.

After drug rehab, Bush returned to Houston to perform prior court-arranged community service with Project P.U.L.L. (Professional United Leadership League), a Houston inner-city program to help troubled and mostly minority teens. It was run by John White, a former tight end for the Houston Oilers, who died in 1988. White’s assistants told Knight-Ridder in late October 2004, that because the senior Bush was honorary co-chairman of Project P.U.L.L., he asked White to do him a favor by placing Junior Bush into a volunteer slot. One of White’s administrative assistants told the news service that White recalled that Junior Bush had “gotten into some kind of trouble” but was not more specific. Willie Frazier, another former Houston Oiler and a P.U.L.L. volunteer in 1973, recalled to Knight-Ridder that the senior Bush impressed on White that an “arrangement” had to be made for the Junior Bush. P.U.L.L. closed its doors in 1989, a year after White’s death but several P.U.L.L. associates remembered that unlike other volunteers, Junior Bush’s hours as a volunteer had to be accounted for because he was in some kind of “trouble.”

Senior Bush had a few other chores to take care of. One was to thank Harris County District Attorney Carol Vance, a past president of the National District Attorneys’ Association, for helping to drop the drug charges against Junior and expunging the arrest record. According to close Bush associates, in appreciation, Mr. Vance was rewarded with a partnership at the prestigious Houston law firm of Bracewell & Patterson. First International Bank (later InterFirst Bank), on whose board Senior Bush served, was a major client of Bracewell & Patterson. InterFirst and its predecessor served as a primary money conduit for Saudi and other foreign money that was pumped into the business and political campaign coffers of both George Senior and Junior.

Vance also had links to the organization that would become Colson’s Prison Fellowship Ministries, an adjunct of the Fellowship. Vance, an evangelical Methodist, ministered to inmates in solitary confinement in Texas prisons. Later, Vance would team up with Colson in a variety of prison ministry projects in the United States and Brazil. Governor Ann Richards appointed Vance to the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, the entity that oversees the state’s Correction’s Department. Vance convinced newly-inaugurated Governor George W. Bush to establish faith-based prisons in Texas, a move that was endorsed by Colson. Bush also permitted ministers to act as detoxification counselors without professional training and certification. In addition, churches were allowed to operate day care centers without state accreditation. Vance became one of the leading advocates of evangelical-run prisons in the United States - something that Colson, Bush, Coe, and the Fellowship all advocated. Vance also saw Satan as being behind Ouija boards and the game Dungeons and Dragons - cultural smears that would be extended by his fellow evangelicals to other innocent children’s icons like Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz’s Good Witch of the North and Wicked Witch of the West, the Vulcan Mr. Spock in Star Trek, and Jedi Knight Yoda in Star Wars, all accused of spreading Satanism and the Teletubbies character Tinky Winky, SpongeBob SquarePants, Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street, Buster Baxter the Bunny from Public Broadcasting’s Postcards from Buster, and Barney the Dinosaur, all charged with promoting homosexuality.

Junior Bush’s time in San Diego at a Christian drug and alcohol rehabilitation center is where the future President of the United States would first be given large doses of Jesus indoctrination. With Nixon’s resignation in disgrace and the Republicans taking a beating in the 1974 elections, little did the Fellowship realize what a huge catch they had made in George W. Bush. Gerald Ford’s administration vainly tried to salvage the Republican cause - but Ford would be defeated in the 1976 race against a born-again Christian, nuclear submarine commander, and former peanut farmer from Georgia named Jimmy Carter. True, Carter was an evangelical Christian but he was not the type favored by the Fellowship and their big business allies, especially two key members of the Ford administration, Chief of Staff Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. And Ford’s CIA Director, George H. W. Bush, was miffed when Carter did not invite him top stay on as spy chief. Bush would have his revenge against the upstart former Governor of Georgia and peanut farmer soon enough.

Again, confirmation of Dubya’s participation in this program would be appreciated from researchers--if so, this could explain a great deal. (If confirmed, this would be an extremely powerful argument against “faith based coercion”!)

It also appears the Fellowship may have been instrumental in the infiltration of the military by dominionists:

The Fellowship also made inroads within the U.S. military, particularly the officers’ ranks. Through an entity known as the Officers Christian Fellowship (OCF), the Fellowship tapped officers in all the services and future officers in the service academies to become “ambassadors for Christ in uniform.” The motto of the OCF is “Pray, Discover, Obey.” The Christian Military Fellowship served as the OCF’s counterpart among the enlisted ranks. Adjunct Fellowship organizations targeted foreign officers and enlisted men, particularly in Great Britain and Australia; service spouses; and service mothers. The international military fellowship is known as the Association of Military Christian Fellowships (AMCF). One person close to the AMCF is Arthur E. (“Gene”) Dewey, a retired Army officer who served as Colin Powell’s Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. Dewey was also a personal consultant to Douglas Coe. In his State Department position, Dewey was an ardent foe of international family planning programs, including the denial of reproductive health care to refugee women.

Eventually, the Fellowship would count some of the military’s top leaders among its members. They include former Joint Chiefs Chairman General David Jones, current Joint Chiefs chairman General Richard Myers, former Marine Corps Commandant and current NATO commander General James L. Jones, Iran-contra figure Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, and, perhaps even more controversial than North, Army Lt. Gen. William “Jerry” Boykin, the military head of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld’s intelligence branch. In 2003, Boykin, in a speech to the First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Florida, referred to the United States as a “Christian nation” and, that in reference to a Somali warlord, he stated, “ I knew that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol.” The reverberations of Boykin’s comments were felt around the world. But his allies and Fellowship compatriots, Rumsfeld, Myers, Kansas Representative Todd Tiahrt, and most important, George W. Bush, refused to condemn him. Calls for Boykin’s reassignment when unheeded. Soon afterwards, Boykin’s Pentagon intelligence group was discovered to have been involved with the torture and sexual molestation of prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The sexual molestation of prisoners included male and female teens being held in Iraq. Also of note is the current head executive director of the OCF. He is retired Lt. Gen. Bruce Fister, the former head of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command.

(Multiple pieces of documentation exist regarding Boykin being the architect of torture policies in both Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.)

Campus Crusade for Christ, an Assemblies of God-associated Christian Zionist group, and a second coercive group targeting college-age students are linked, too:

Another organization affiliated with the Fellowship is the Campus Crusade for Christ, which, in turn, runs something called the Christian Embassy, its outreach arm in Washington. There is also an “International Christian Embassy” in Jerusalem that also houses the studios of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network. Through the Campus Crusade, the Fellowship and its affiliates seek converts among college students in the United States and abroad. An additional Fellowship activity is the National Student Leadership Program and the associated Navigators, which seek converts among college and high school-aged young people. The Fellowship’s network can also reach out to other evangelicals for the purpose of political marches on Washington. Whether they are called “Jesus Marches,” Promise Keeper rallies, or anti-abortion gatherings, the fundamentalists have been able to tap the support of Falwell; Richard Roberts, the son of Oklahoma-based evangelist Oral Roberts; and Florida-based evangelist Benny Hinn. In addition, the Fellowship has its own aggressive “Youth Corps,” which is active seeking converts, according to Jeff Sharlet’s Harper’s article, in countries as diverse as Russia, Ukraine, Romania, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Nepal, Bhutan, Ecuador, Honduras, and Peru. The Fellowship seeks to groom young leaders for future positions of leadership in countries around the world. According to Sharlet, the goal of the Fellowship is “two hundred national and international world leaders bound together relationally by a mutual love for God and the family.” In Fellowship-speak, the “family” is synonymous with the Fellowship. The strategy of placing Fellowship “moles” in foreign governments would pay off nicely when George W. Bush and his advisers had to cobble together a “Coalition of the Willing” to support the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

(The “International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem” is a Christian Zionist group that is one of approximately forty separate and distinct front groups of the Assemblies of God; one of the more infamous works they are linked to is a bit of Holocaust revisionism called The Pink Swastika (which is frequently quoted in AFA publications) that claims that LGBT people were not killed in the Holocaust and that in fact the Nazi party was almost entirely homosexual. The very dominionist group I walked away from has close links with the ICEJ, hence why I’m a bit aware of it.)

(“The Navigators” are a “parachurch” group that is a force in hijacking more moderate Christian churches, largely target college-aged youth, promote “faith-based coercion” programs (Alpha USA is almost exclusively used by dominionist groups in the US in “stealth evangelism” campaigns, and in fact the Alpha courses (as presented in the US) are largely courses in how to conduct stealth evangelism), is part of the Colorado Springs complex of dominionist groups, requires agreement to a fundamentalist statement of faith, is quite explicitly dominionist, may well have invented stealth evangelism (the group has a very early history, dating back to the 1930’s), and has been linked to the highly abusive “cell church” movement, quite possibly as one of its primary architects.) (Campus Crusade for Christ, of note, has also been noted as using abusive “shepherding” techniques as well as promotion of “bait and switch” evangelism.)

Quite a few dominionist-friendly legislators are linked to the Fellowship:

Past and current residents of the C Street Center have included former Representatives Steve Largent (R-OK) and Ed Bryant (R-TN), former Representative and current Democratic Governor of Maine John E. Baldacci, Senators Sam Brownback (R-KS) (Brownback is also a member of the right-wing Fascist-oriented Opus Dei sect within the Catholic Church), Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), John Ensign (R-NV), and Tom Coburn (R-OK), Representatives Mike Doyle (R-PA), Bart Stupak (D-MI), Zach Wamp (R-TN), and former Senator Don Nickles (R-OK).

Other past members included Senators Sam Nunn (D-GA), Lincoln Chaffee (R-RI), Roger Jepsen (R-IA), Charles Percy (R-IL), Strom Thurmond (R-SC), David Durenberger (R-MN), Jennings Randolph (D-WV), Paul Trible (R-VA), Phil Gramm (R-TX), William Armstrong (R-CO), Lawton Chiles (D-FL), Dan Coats (R-IN), Jeremiah Denton (R-AL), John Stennis (D-MS), Al Gore, Jr. (D-TN), and Larry Pressler (R-SD), and former Representatives J. C. Watts (R-OK), Robert Dornan (R-CA), and Tony Hall (D-OH). George W. Bush named Hall, who purported to be a strong defender of human rights, to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations for World Hunger. In typical Fellowship fashion, Hall immediately began to lobby the UN on behalf of Monsanto to accept genetically-modified foods.

Other significant members of the Fellowship are Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), Pete Domenici (R-NM), Conrad Burns (R-MT), Richard Lugar (R-IN), James Inhofe (R-OK), Bill Nelson (D-FL) (Nelson’s wife Grace serves on the Fellowship Foundation’s Board of Directors), and Rick Santorum (R-PA), Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), and George Allen (R-VA), Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Representatives Frank Wolf (R-VA), Tom DeLay (R-TX), Tom Feeney (R-FL), Curt Weldon (R-PA), Jerry Weller (R-IL), and Joseph Pitts (R-PA).

Friends of the Fellowship, if not outright members, include Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rick Santorum (R-PA), Jon Kyl (R-AZ), House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), and former Senator Zell Miller (D-GA).

Somewhat disturbingly (yet not surprisingly), the Fellowship is also linked with “Third Wave” pentecostal churches promoting dominion theology--as noted in several areas.

If it were just a matter of dominionism being a “sister movement” to a racist ideology, or even Christian Identity being merely a racist split from pentecostalism, that’d be one thing. The problem is, the links are rather deeper than that (as noted, dominionism was essentially founded by racists) and the links continue to the present day.

This thread would be huge if I’d commit to reading Mr. Wilson’s more recent posts.

See references at bottom of this post.

Cruz’ Father Suggests Ted Cruz “Anointed” to “Bring The Spoils Of War To The Priests”

“The pastor [Huch] referred to Proverbs 13:22, a little while ago, which says that the wealth of the wicked is stored for the righteous. And it is through the kings, anointed to take dominion, that that transfer of wealth is going to occur.” -
Rafael Cruz, August 26, 2012

In a sermon last year at an Irving, Texas, megachurch that helped elect Ted Cruz to the United States Senate, Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz indicated that his son was among the evangelical Christians who are anointed as “kings” to take control of all sectors of society, an agenda commonly referred to as the “Seven Mountains” mandate, and “bring the spoils of war to the priests”, thus helping to bring about a prophesied “great transfer of wealth”, from the “wicked” to righteous gentile believers.

Rafael Cruz’ dominionist sermon given August 26, 2012, at the New Beginnings Church of pastor Larry Huch, in Irving, Texas has already received considerable scrutiny due to an excellent Huffington Post commentary by Methodist Associate Pastor Morgan Guyton, who noted the explicitly dominionist nature of pastor Cruz’ sermon, which concerned the divine mandate for believers, with anointing of “kings” in their respective spheres, to take control over all sectors of society.

Cruz spoke of “Kings who are anointed to go to war, win the war, and bring the spoils of war to the priests.”

Discussion of the now-notorious speech by Rafael Cruz has missed the fact that Ted Cruz was subsequently blessed and anointed by prominent dominionist pastors, in effect as a “king” in the political/governmental sphere, at a special blessing ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, at a July 19th-20th 2013 rally designed to draw pastors into politics.

But in a very real, mundane sense Ted Cruz has already helped deliver hundreds of millions of dollars, or more, to the evangelical right. Cruz’ past service - as a “king” who brought “spoils to the priests” - is a matter of established record; as I revealed in a prior story, no less than a top adviser to President George W. Bush has stated that in 1999 Ted Cruz played a major role in helping the Bush for President campaign lock down the conservative evangelical vote in the 2000 election.

One can interpret the “great transfer of wealth” -- predicted by Ted Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz, and by Pastor Larry Huch, who threw his Texas megachurch’s considerable heft behind the 2012 Cruz for Senate campaign -- in magical terms, sure.

But Ted Cruz’ apparently notable role in getting George W. Bush into the presidency led in turn to Bush’s “Faith Based Initiative” - that continues to this day under two successive Obama administrations and which, during the Bush years, funneled billions of dollars to churches and institutions associated with the religious right.

In other words, the “great transfer of wealth” is about more than wishful thinking. It’s about an ongoing effort, by leaders and institutions of the evangelical right, to gradually gobble up the secular sphere of government.

Thus, for example, fast growing Christian schools such as the late Moral Majority co-founder Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, which now vacuums up hundreds of millions of dollars in federal student aid money each year. Or the hundreds of millions of diverted tax dollars now flowing, in a least 12 U.S. states, under so-called “neo-voucher” schemes, to private schools - many of which, as explored in a new Rolling Stone story, have virulently anti-LGBT policies. Under Bush, too, several billion dollars per year in USAID funding were shifted from secular aid nonprofits to religious ones, some them holding anti-gay and reactionary, even theocratic, underlying ideology.

I could go on at length about this dreary subject, which involves major shifts in government social service funding streams. But instead, let’s turn now to the “kings for dominion”:

In his August 26th, 2012 guest sermon at Larry Huch’s Irving, TX megachurch, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’ father Rafael Cruz, in what was not the first of his guest appearances at the church, explained,

“The pastor [Huch] referred to Proverbs 13:22, a little while ago, which says that the wealth of the wicked is stored for the righteous. And it is through the kings, anointed to take dominion, that that transfer of wealth is going to occur. God, even though he’s sovereign, even though he’s omnipotent, he doesn’t let it rain out of the sky - he’s going to use people to do it.”

Introducing pastor Cruz, in the context that it would soon be Rosh Hashanah, which would ring in the Jewish New Year of 2012, Larry Huch had stated, invoking dominionist numerology,

“The number 12 means ‘divine government’, that God begins to rule and reign. Not Wall Street, not Washington - God’s people and his kingdom will begin to rule and reign”

As Huch spoke, Rafael Cruz could be seen in the audience, standing next to Huch’s wife Tiz, hand upraised to receive and magnify Huch’s prophetic blessing. Huch continued,

“I know that’s why God got Rafael’s son elected - Ted Cruz, the next Senator. But here’s the exciting thing - and that’s why I know it’s timely for him to teach this, and bring this anointing. The rabbinical teaching is, especially amongst gentiles, who God opens their eyes, that in a few weeks begins that year 2012, and that this will begin what we call the “End Time Transfer of Wealth.

And that when these gentiles begin to receive this blessing, they will never go back financially through the valley again. They will grown and grow and grow. It’s said this way - that God is looking at the church, and everyone in it, and deciding, in the next 3 and 1/2 years, who will be his bankers. And the ones that say, “Here am I, Lord, you can trust me”, we will become so blessed that we will usher in the coming of the Messiah. This message if for you. Would you welcome our good friend Rafael Cruz ? What a tremendous man of God.”

Pastor Cruz could not have made himself more clear:

“There are some of you, as a matter of fact I will dare to say the majority of you, that your anointing is not an anointing as priest. It’s an anointing as king. And God has given you an anointing to go to the battlefield. And what’s the battlefield ? The battlefield is the marketplace. To go to the marketplace and occupy the land. To go to the marketplace and take dominion. If you remember the last time I was in this pulpit, I talked to you about Genesis chapter 1, verse 28, where God says unto Adam and Eve, “Go forth, multiply, TAKE DOMINION over all creation.” And if you recall, we talked about the fact that that dominion is not just in the church. That dominion is over every area - society, education, government, economics...

Describing the anointing of kings, pastor Cruz spoke of,

“Kings who are anointed for a totally different reason than priests. Kings who are anointed to take dominion. Kings who are anointed to go to war, win the war, and bring the spoils of war to the priests. So the work of the kingdom of God could be accomplished. And I’ll tell you - the king needed the blessing of the priest in order to be successful in battle... [in Deuteronomy] Before the king went to battle, the priest came and blessed the king and blessed the warriors. And the king needed the blessing of the priest in order to be successful in battle... Now, the priest also needed for the king to be successful in battle, because the priest needed the spoils of war in order to repair the temple, in order to carry out the ministry that God had entrusted him. So the king and the priest complimented each other, and they were both very, very interested in blessing one another.

Concluding the service, the two men, Huch and Cruz, met onstage and pastor Huch conveyed a “word”, a prophetic message from God relayed through one of his believers, from Rafael Cruz to his New Beginnings Church audience,

“God laid this on Rafael’s heart, for right now - listen to me - In the next 3 and 1/2 years, and we’re not waiting 3 and 1/2 years, it’s the End Time Transfer of Wealth... You know, during the elections - and it just hit me, Rafael was up there and he was saying, “this is the anointed by God” - when I got a phone call, would I come to a meeting to meet Rafael Cruz and Ted Cruz, Tiz and I had already received about ten phone calls asking if we would get behind a candidate - ‘could we come and speak at your church ? Can we come ?” I mean one after another.

And when we were asked by some friends to come to this house. They said we would not only meet Ted but we would meet Rafael. Before I ever met Ted, I met Rafael. And I knew that if the son was like the dad we could trust him to be our Senator. Amen ?

But here’s what, here’s when it came to me - Ted will be our next Senator, and I gave Rafael a word the other day... this is just the beginning. It’s going to be much, much, much higher. But here’s the deal - Ted Cruz is the real thing. But he hasn’t become the real thing now that he’s going to be Senator. He was the real thing when he was working as a clerk, he was the real thing when he was going through college, he didn’t become faithful now that he’s Senator. He’s going to become Senator - and I believe some day either Supreme Court justice of Vice President - but he was faithful back when he was his [Rafael Cruz’] boy and God took that faithfulness.”

As a final note, consider what’s implicitly packed into Rafael Cruz’ and Larry Huch’s “great transfer of wealth” - According to Huch and Cruz, this is a transfer of wealth, “from the wicked”, to “righteous” gentiles.

In the generally accepted English meaning of the term, “gentile” refers simply to non-Jews. And because “righteous Jews” were not included among those predicted to benefit from the “great wealth transfer”, the logical import is that those Christians anointed as “kings” would plunder - remember, Huch and Cruz spoke of this specifically in terms of war, and combat - the fortunes of non-righteous gentiles and, you guessed it, Jews.

Given the noisily Christian Zionist milieu in which the “great wealth transfer” service was given - Larry Huch opened Rafael Cruz’ sermon with a blast from a shofar, there was a huge Menorah looming over the stage, the main pulpit featured a cross superimposed on a Star of David, and some of the men in the audience wore yarmulkes - it’s more than a little creepy.

Adding to the creepiness, this isn’t the first time in recent political history we’ve heard Proverbs 13:22 from a stage.

In September 2008, with the election looming and John McCain and Barack Obama readying their final battle plans, a strange video surfaced, from an August 2005 ceremony held at the most significant Alaska church of 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

In the video, which became briefly notorious and unsettled many uncommitted moderate voters, Sarah Palin, who would soon run for and win the Alaska governor’s seat, was shown being blessed and anointed by a Kenyan pastor with a croaking, raspy voice who called upon God to bless candidate Palin and protect her against witchcraft.

While that part of the video received considerable mockery from mainstream media, few seemed to notice a short speech by Muthee, which preceded the blessing and anointing of Palin. In the nakedly dominionist speech, Thomas Muthee - a close colleague of New Apostolic Reformation kingpin C. Peter Wagner - called upon believers to “invade” and “infiltrate” seven leading sectors of society:

“In a moment, I’ll be asking you that we pray for Sarah, and I’ll tell you the reason why. When we talk about transformation of a community, we are talking about God invading seven areas in our society. Let me repeat that one more time. When we talk about transformation of a society, a community, it’s where we see God’s Kingdom infiltrate, influence seven areas in our society.

Number one is the spiritual aspect of our society...

...the second area whereby God wants to penetrate in our society is in the economic area. The Bible says the wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous. It is high time that we have top Christian businessmen, businesswomen, bankers, you know, who are men and women of integrity, running the economics of our nations. That’s what we are waiting for. That’s part and parcel of transformation. If you look at the Israelites, you know, that’s how they won. And that’s how they are, even today....

So we go to the third area, it’s in the area of politics... There are people who are wired to politics because God wants to take the political, you know, dimension of our societies. And those people should be prayed for. That’s why I was, you know, I was so glad to see Sarah here. We should pray for her, we should back her up. And, you know, come the day of voting, we should be there, not just praying, we should be there. And I’m saying this because that’s what I’m telling our church. I’m telling them that we need this in Parliament. In here is what you call Congressmen, you know, you know, the, the Governors, we need the brethren right inside there. Is anybody hearing me?

You know, because who will change the laws of the lands? The problem is do we just pray, but we do nothing about it. If the believers had not done something in this country, your president would not be in office today. Yes or no? Am I right?

Number three, or number four, it’s the area of education. We need believers who are educationists. If we had them, today we would not be talking about the Ten Commandments being kicked out of the church, I mean out of our schools. They would still be there. One of the things that you, you know, I would love you to know, I’m a child of revival of the Seventies, and that revival swept through the schools. They are open to preaching, you know, open. Open. Wide open. You go to any school, there is what we call Christian Union. Christian Union is nothing more but a bunch of kids that are born again, spirit-filled, tongue-talking, devil-casting. Is anybody hearing me? All over the country! Is anybody hearing me?

We need God taking over our education system! Otherwise, we, if we have God in our schools, we will not have kids being taught, you know, how to worship Buddha, how to worship Mohammed, we will not have in the curriculum witchcraft and sorcery. Is anybody hearing me?

The other area is in the area of media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lands. Otherwise we will not have all the junk coming out of, you know, coming out of the media... Why can’t we have our living church in Hollywood? Guess what will happen. If we have a living church right in Hollywood, we would not have all the kind of pornography that we are having. Is anybody hearing me?

And the last area is in the area of government. Hello? We need believers there. We need men and women of integrity. You know, as the Secretaries of State. We need them right there. People that are born again, spirit filled, people who know God, and people who are serious with God.

So in a moment if you do not mind, I’ll ask, you know, even before I go to do this thing, you know, I’ll ask Sarah, would you mind to come please? Would you mind? Come, please. Let’s all stand up, and let’s hold hands all over this house. Come, Pastor, come.

[Sarah Palin joins Muthee and two Alaska pastors onstage]

Thank you, Jesus. Let’s all pray. Let’s pray for Sarah. Hallelujah! Come on, hold your hands up and raise them. Hold them and raise them up here! Come on, talk to God about this woman! Come on, talk to God about this woman we declare favor from today. We say favor, favor, favor! We say praise my God! We say grace to be rained upon her in the name of Jesus. My God, you make your judgement, you make room. You make ways in the desert, and I’m asking you today, we are asking you as the body of Christ in this valley, make a way for Sarah, even in the [inaudible]. Make her way my God. Bring finances her way, even in the campaign in the name of Jesus, and above all give her the personnel, give her men and women that will back her up in the name of Jesus. We want righteousness in this state. We want righteousness in this nation. Because you say [inaudible] in the name of Jesus. Our Father, use her to turn this nation the other way around. Use her to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers so that the curse that has been there long can be broken. In the name of Jesus. Father, we thank you today. We come in the hindrance of the enemy, standing in her way to there. In the name of Jesus, in the name of Jesus! Every form of witchcraft, it will be rebuked in the name of Jesus. Father, make her way now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let’s all be seated.”

Sarah Palin, as I helped document in 2008 and 2009, was extensively tied to the unabashedly dominionist New Apostolic Reformation, whose seminal theorist and organizer C. Peter Wagner has called, in a December 2012 op-ed in Charisma magazine, for his followers to “take over everything”.

Last Sunday at a rally against Obamacare, both anointed politicians Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz could be found side-by-side, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
