I have, which is why I said what I did. If this is cleared up easily, that would be good.

Just got it a couple more times... Jeff, I think an email to tech support might be in order!

Can't find the thread where one of the folks on this board made this comment, so this seems like a good place for the following:

"Apparently there is a bunch of hackers or wannabe hackers who infiltrate suspicious computers, and pinch incriminating files specifically child porn, which they then forward to relevent authorities. Or something similar."

A discussion forum for which I am one of the section moderators has been experiencing pornspam and adspam posters, which I delete a couple of times a day. But the comment above got me to thinking, and so I e-mailed the quote to the site owner, and included this comment:

"Could that be the motive (for the attacks on our site)? Sorta, "Hey officer, look what I found on this guy's site! Whyncha do something about it?"

Here is the response I received:

"I have to upgrade that forum, and when I do, I will institute a registration system for new members whereby they don't get admitted until they have been approved by a site administrator. I will designate you to that task. In itself, that approval method will kill off a lot of the spambots.

"And that little trick you were talking about with those so-called "hackers" getting into people's computers is a nasty, vicious scam that's getting a lot of innocent people in worlds of trouble. The game is that one cracker (not "hacker") goes in and puts a set of files in a hidden directory (the files and the directory are set with attributes that make it look like they've been there for some time and been built up through the victim's own computer access to the Internet into UseNet groups); the second cracker goes in and collects the directory contents with all the incriminating evidence and data about when and how the files were downloaded. The authorities are then notified, they get a warrant, raid the victims place and find that, sure enough, the target of the scam does, indeed, have the files in his computer. He swears he's never seen them before; and, of course, he hasn't since they were in a hidden directory he has no idea is on his machine. Sometimes the crackers even put a password on the directory that they then tell the authorities they "cracked." The password ensures that, even if the victim were to have found the directory, he could neither see what's in it nor delete it.

"This scam has been getting more and more sophisticated, but it has been used for almost a decade, especially by people who want to make their enemies go away. The old, primitive method of playing the game was to get an e-mail message the victim's computer had sent (which can be done with a virus, even, these days), then alter the message so it contains a graphical attachment of an illegal nature, which is then forwarded to law enforcement authorities.

"It's all as bad as bad can get, and the hysteria about the subject matter of the crimes makes it so the victim doesn't have a prayer of a fair trial. Even if he manages to get off (usually because there was an inconsistency between the send time in the front view and the internal data about when the message was actually originally sent and then re-sent), the rest of his life is probably ruined anyway.

That I was unable to solicit members last year to match my offer of meeting half the price for professional forum software tells me it's far more conveniant to complain about such things than do something worthwhile to affect a solution.

Three ideas:

1. Open an account for Google Adsense and run text ads on the blog and forums. Monetize the site a little to help Jeff run server costs and working towards upgrading the forum software or buying a CMS/blog software that has more bells and whistles.

If running ads isn't what Jeff wants to do...

2. Put a friendly call out for site donation. I haven't thought about it until I read this thread but I'll gladly send $20 in. Wad up a twenty and throw it at Jeff's door. Financial mudballs for good, anyone?

And if that still doesn't fly...

3. Buy a "Rigouous Intuition" book personally signed by Jeff. Factor in the cost of the book, shipping costs and add an extra $5 on for the autograph.

I don't consider any one of these three options bad ideas. It costs money to run RigInt because the people that host and operate these websites need to eat too, you know. There's nothing wrong with Jeff making some cash to put toward this site, expanding it or even working towards the goal that one day - SHOCK! - he can make some money writing online. We all benefit from this place and if we can help Jeff a little, why not?

Personally I go for #1. Make money from Google and maybe one or two other ad agencies. #3 is kind of cool though and I bet a bunch of people would like to have a book autographed by Jeff of their very own.

If you think the ad idea has some merit and you want any help figuring some of this stuff out, I can help. I've been educating myself about the Adsense and online advertising system for a while. It's fairly straightforward to do.

Not only here

· "Our hosting company," shrieks Gorgeous George Galloway's ever-riveting website, "keeps shutting our site down without notice and without discussion, claiming we have used too much bandwidth." Now the Bearded One has been accused of many, many things, but unfounded allegations of bandwidth theft may, we reckon, prove just one provocation too many. Frankly, we fear the worst.

I've been running into that CPU usage notice a lot over the last 2-3 days. Something's out of whack. I would almost suspect someone of trying to cripple the board, but I don't think it's that, really. Just some hosting screw up.

Hopefully Jeff can send off an email when he gets back from his break. I get it several times a day and often lose posts.

In the meantime, it's a good idea to select all your text and copy to your clipboard just in case, especially if you've just composed a lengthy post.

One thing to keep in mind with a large, dynamic site like this that has a lot of data, is that web spiders will use a lot of bandwith/CPU cycles when they index the site. Since I've found this message board to be searchable through at least Google, it's something to consider.

Today, especially, I'm having serious problems accessing the board!
Is anyone else experiencing this?

in addition to the CPU suspended message I've been getting this new one:
