Democrats are constantly hammered with the "soft on Defence" canard (even by their "own" in the DLC), and the response of many is to say, in effect, "Oh yeah? I'll show ya who's soft: More troops! Better equipment!"

Military industrialists must piss themselves watching the debate.

Edited by: Rigorous Intuition at: 7/13/05 8:52 pm

I'm a committed pacifist and have 2 teen-age kids who would be at risk of being drafted, if a draft is initiated - so in no way am I advocating a draft.

But, one argument I've heard for the draft, which I agree with, is that if everyone's children were being sent to fight this Admin's wars - we wouldn't have wars to fight. A draft would mobilize the people of this country to demand an end to them.

If there is a draft, I hope there are no loop holes for the privileged and politicians to take advantage of and keep their kids out of combat positions.

And, I'll be taking my kids and leaving the country. They've both already asked me to do so, if there is a draft.

The negation of negation

Quote:
No wonder so many in the Democrat establishment continue to support the internationalist "democracy" project being undertaken hand-in-hand with (or under the guise of) the "War on Terror" long after the Iraq war has been exposed as having been built on a foundation of half-truths and outright lies.

And so we have come full circle. The sacrifices made by millions of Americans in both blood and treasure over the course of generations to defeat messianic totalitarian ideologies may well have been in vain. "History's actors" Ð who are in reality hyper-ambitious, totalitarian-minded ideologues Ð couldn't destroy America from without, and so they have found a way to worm themselves into the American leadership to do it from within Ð and for our own good, no less.

www.antiwar.com/orig/cmoo...cleid=6649

draft mindless

Postby anon » Thu Jul 14, 2005 1:34 pm

All kinds of excuses from everyone about why a draft might, could or would be useful. Let's get this straight. We kill people in wars. Those wars are to support the the top 1% of the population. There is NO reason to have a draft unless you believe in endless war for peace. The draft is a con job about you ACCEPTING war and killing. Lets just talk about it you say. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will not kill for my country, president, CEO or whoever and discussing it as if there is some rational is ridiculous.
It seems that a rigorous intuition is lost on just about everyone when someone says draft.
We have enough weapons, why don't we just kill EVERYONE and get it over with, instead of the slow steady drip, drip, drip of blood from soldiers and civilians.
I suggest the democrats who are so keen on a draft should be checked out, pronto. Why do thet serve the masters? And I'm sorry it's NOT because somebody said they were weak and they think they look bad. There IS an agenda.
Are you sure people believe in conspiracies? It seems not when the draft is mentioned.

Thanks Anon. Mandatory Military draft is the greatest breach of fundamental freedom and rights of the individual in a "free" society. I would never welcome a draft, even if I felt the war was justified (though I'm not sure I believe in a justifiable war anymore). If I was to look for a silver lining in the draft, I would say that a draft might be the only thing to awaken the many silent persons who have not spoken of the terrible corruption and lies that have lead to the morally bankrupt wars in the Middle East. Perhaps then the cameras would have to cover the protestors on the streets.

Am I the only one who has problems with calling Lieberman, and to a lesser extent Hillary, dems? Lieberman is certainly not. I don't know what exactly to make of Hillary, but if she gets the 2008 nod I'm done with the "Dems".

Anon - not sure if you were responding to my post or not. But let me clarify - I do not and never will support a draft.

I can agree with an argument for the draft, and not agree with having a draft.

I think war is wrong. There is no justified war, in my opinion.

I was trying to say what thrulookingglass concluded - if there is a silver lining... And I'm not sure I would even call it a silver lining. But I hope, if there would be a draft, that it would be the straw breaking this camel's back, and I agree with those who say that it would have that effect.

I appreciate the argument that if the draft were reinstated, then the clouds would be removed from a lot of eyes. The problem is that government works so slow that thousands of draftees would be killed in combat before the reversal of the draft would complete, and that's a best case scenario.

No one wants to fight this war, yet there are no successful anti-war parties. How very Orwellian.

There are so many Americans out there still who support this war but won't make any real commitment to it; a truly ugly aspect of our American culture. How cynical have we become when we won't support what we supposedly support. I guess we learn from the best; 1 of 535 congress-critters actually have a close loved one in the military (an AMAZING stat). I'd venture a guess that even that lone servicemember has been guaranteed a place out of harm's way.

As for the people who do not support the war (we're told they are the majority now), they are not stopping this war. This is no small point. The system is fucked, and its hard to see our way through to results, but is that really an excuse? There ARE hundreds of millions of us. The objectionists too, many of them anyway, are guilty of not supporting what they support.

Perhaps the price to be paid for razing hell on a population as great as California should be to force all of our hands. I totally disagree with the concept of conscription in a free society; I believe that people would volunteer to fight in an honourable fight, but the waiter will eventually bring the bill for our complacency. It could come in the form of a nuclear attack by mysterious forces. Or maybe we should just swallow the bullet, let the draft happen, and force our true inner feelings to the surface. It could be that the draft is the least affecting way to exact proper change by forcing the populace to confront their complacency.

Then again, those mysterious forces could drop their nuke once the draft is on, and the heat is high to turn it off.

Did you get all that?

Thanks for reading my inner deliberations. Obviously the draft would be a terrible idea because the powers that be have the power to obfuscate, but our hundreds of millions of complacencies here are the true problem, and we will eventually face the price.

...Anyway...lol
