Conventional wisdom (for whatever that's worth) is that it can't just be shut down without first figuring out how the prisoners are going to be tried and other not-so-unimportant details. Makes sense to me that it needs to be carefully and correctly.

But he (Obama) did make a promise to shut down Gitmo, and this is a first step to ending the extrajudicial military trials.

But of course, Obama is evil and a liar so this must be some kind of ruse.

I do think hes an evil liar, and I also think this is just PR and damage control for the powers that be. For example, there is the issue of "Will they stop torturing?" I think we can all agree that that's a silly question and that they will absolutely not stop torturing. Closing Gitmo will leave every other black hole they've ever used, which is probably where most of the torturing goes on anyway.

I mean, "evil liar" is pretty strong, but I think its still probably the best thing to call him.

This assertion is not as far fetched as one would think, because virtually every major appointment to the Obama administration is a former Clinton associate. All the appointments, moreover, are Beltway insiders.

For example, Rahm Emanuel, a former Clinton advisor, is Obama's Chief of Staff.

Obama’s National Economic Council, Lawrence Summers, was Clinton's Treasury Secretary.

Bill Richardson, Clinton’s UN ambassador and energy secretary, is Obama's commerce secretary.

Bill Clinton's lawyer, Eric Holder, is Obama’s choice for attorney general.

Rounding out the list of former Clinton officials who are members of the Obama administration we find former State Department official Wendy Sherman; former Deputy Secretary of Defense John White; Defense Secretary William Perry; Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In addition, we also find Michael Froman, who served as Rubin’s chief of staff; Peter Orszag is director of the Office of Budget of the White House and Christopher Edley, who served the Clinton administration and is married to a former Clinton deputy chief of staff.

The number one priority among many number one priorities facing President Barack Obama should be investigating and arresting the criminals in the Bush administration.

By saying he is looking forward and not at the past gives a green light to all future presidencies who wish to trample the constitution, lie us into wars, torture, scoff at the rule of law, turn their backs on the Geneva Conventions.

This just goes to show that our politicians are in a elite club, an exclusive institution and that in most instances,regardless of party or crimes committed will always protect the institution.

This is a very important point. The Bush administration has set the bar so low that any small concession to common decency is now seen as a massive shift. To my knowledge the rendition program is still ongoing and the secret torture centers operational. Of course the mainstream media considers this issue settled and passé. Lawrence Summers and Timothy Geithner are beholden to Wall Street financiers (not to mention Summers' distrubing statements while at the head of Harvard regarding women's intelligence etc.), national security adviser James Jones is a tried and true proponent of American world dominance, Robert Gates is Robert Gates nd Zbigniew Brzezinski is doing lord knows what in the basement.

The whole propaganda triumph is made complete by the notion that to express suspicion towards power now that Obama is the nominal person in power is self-defeating "cynicism", a notion that seems to have currency even among otherwise critical and open-minded people.
