"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

Georgia Lee Brown by the Cramps

RIP Lux

Cover of Jackie Lee Cochran's Georgia Lee Brown

GEORGIA LEE BROWN
(Hafner - Zinn - Hafner)
JACKIE LEE COCHRAN (Jaguar 3031, 1959)

The night was rainy and the night was blue
And I was thinkin' only of a gal I knew
I took a walk to the middle of town
I met a pretty lady named Georgia Lee Brown
(a-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom, a-doodle-doodle-doo)

Told her I was lonely and only sad
She said, cheer it up and smile and don't you feel so sad
She took my hand and pointed to a lonely star
Then she walked me home to a neighbourhood bar
(a-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom, a-doodle-doodle-doo)

An old streetlight was painting mystical circles
On the pavement out in front of the bar
While inside a band was playin' magical music
To the strings of a blue melancholy guitar

We did some dancin' and we drank some gin
Neath her angel smile, hear the devil grin
I discovered romance was her stock and trade
And that love was just a careless game that she played
(a-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom, a-doodle-doodle-doo)

She told me, honey I don't want your love
My heart's as hollow as an empty glove
All that I can feel for you is a kind of blues
Coz you're in love with love from your head to your shoes
(a-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom, a-doodle-doodle-doo)

Well, that old streetlight was painting mystical circles
On the pavement out in front of the bar
While inside a band was playin' magical music
To the strings of a blue melancholy guitar

The music started blearin' and the lights burned bright
My heart didn't want to spent a wild night
She said, sonny I think you, you're kind of vain
Then Georgia Lee Brown disappeared in the rain
(a-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom-pom, doodle-doodle-doo)

I met Lux and Ivy back in the early days. They were playing a show at the 930 Club in DC. Must have been 1977
I had never seen anything like the Cramps. I was pretty young, just about to turn 21. Lux slammed a table into my ribs during "Sunglasses After Dark," and I was thrilled. Nick Knox and Bryan Gregory were in this lineup. So cool.

Later, I think it was 1978, they played a club in Silver Spring MD. I was dating a guy from the Urban Verbs (lead singer's brother was in the Talking Heads..I wasn't dating the lead singer) and I was in a band also. We managed to get backstage since we were, ya know, cool too. I begged Lux to kiss me...and he did.... Ivy got jealous so I begged her to kiss me too. Then we all went out for breakfast.

Ah well, I do have some pretty good memories!

now do you understand?

louie, louie, louie, lou-i the bird's the word and do you know why?
you gotta beat it with a stick.
you gotta beat it 'til it's thick.
you gotta live until you're dead.
you gotta rock 'til you see red.
now do you understand?
do you understand?
i'm a garbageman.
aw, jump on and ride...
yeah it's just what you need when you're down in the dumps.
one half hillbilly and one half punk.
big long legs and one big mouth.
the hottest thing from the north to come out of the south.
do you understand?
do you understand?

and you don't choose no substitutes.
so stick out your can 'cause i'm your garbageman.
louie, louie, louie, lou-i the bird's the word and do you know why?
you gotta beat it with a stick.
you gotta beat it 'til it's thick.
you gotta live until you're dead.
you gotta rock 'til you see red. now do you understand?
do you understand? do you understand?

all right, hop off.

There were a couple of vids on youtube last year of the cramps playing at a couple different psychiatric institutions in CA. worth looking up.
Otherwise I was looking into Hot Chocolate, inspired by hearing Emma for the first time in years. On the oldies station!

amazing man, amazing band. Some of the later vids have an odd Eyes Wide Shut /MK ultra feel to them. The music in those was a bit lackluster. In the earlier stuff the grooves and textures -and some of the message/lyrics - are outstanding.

The Cramps live at the Napa State Mental Hospital, 1978

"Somebody told me you people were crazy, but I'm not so sure about that. You look alright to me."

File under Sacred Music (20 mins DVD with sound) is Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard's re-make of an infamous bootleg video documenting The Cramps legendary performance at Napa Mental Institute, California in 1978.
