Slain U.S. Nazi Millionaire Had Parts for Dirty Bomb.

Postby compared2what? » Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:32 am

No kidding. His wife shot him. In Maine. Follow the links from the Raw Story write up below to the Wikileaks investigation to the Bangor and Mendocino local newspaper stories, and you get an extra-dose of commenter warfare about whether the wife was a golddigger, etc.

Weird, weird story. Not to mention one that sounds more like a threat worth reporting on than any of the Islamic plots to topple the Sears Tower that we do get to hear about, imo.

Claim: Depleted uranium purchased over the Internet from an American company

Trust fund millionaire James G. Cummings, an American Nazi sympathizer from Maine who was slain by his wife Amber in December, allegedly had the radioactive components necessary to construct a "dirty bomb," a newly released threat analysis report states.

The man, allegedly furious over the election of President Obama, purchased depleted uranium over the Internet from an American company.

"According to an FBI field intelligence report from the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center posted online by WikiLeaks, an organization that posts leaked documents, an investigation into the case revealed that radioactive materials were removed from Cummings’ home after his shooting death on Dec. 9," reported the Bangor Daily News.

"Amber (Cummings) indicated James was very upset with Barack Obama being elected President," reported the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center (PDF link). "She indicated James had been in contact with 'white supremacist group(s).' Amber also indicated James mixed chemicals in the kitchen sink at their residence and had mentioned 'dirty bombs.'"

"Also found was literature on how to build 'dirty bombs' and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60, radioactive materials," said the Bangor Daily. "The FBI report also stated there was evidence linking James Cummings to white supremacist groups. This would seem to confirm observations by local tradesmen who worked at the Cummings home that he was an ardent admirer of Adolf Hitler and had a collection of Nazi memorabilia around the house, including a prominently displayed flag with swastika. Cummings claimed to have pieces of Hitler’s personal silverware and place settings, painter Mike Robbins said a few days after the shooting."

After Amber Cummings admitted to the murder and entered an insanity plea, Belfast, Main police felt it necessary to bring the FBI on the scene. Bangor Daily reporter Eric Russell followed up in a filmed interview with Belfast Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton:

(LINK to video interview with Chief "Move along, nothing to see here" Trafton --c2w).

The paper also reported that Cummings had a long history of violence.

Public safety officials were quick to claim there was no threat.

The story of the first attempt at constructing a "dirty bomb" in the United States was not carried by any mainstream press outside of Maine.

"Conservatives apparently didn't want to draw attention to a radioactive, wealthy version of Timothy McVeigh coming from their own sphere, although nearly every day during Bush's reign saw "dirty bombs" hyped as the ultimate threat," summarized Wikileaks.

"The left didn't want to repeat another 'dirty bomb' story, the likes of which Republicans had used to drive hundreds of billions of dollars into Republican dominated military and security contractors."

In the report, an unnamed source noted, "state authorities detected radiation emissions in four small jars in the residence labeled 'uranium metal', as well as one jar labeled 'thorium.' The four jars of uranium carried the label of an identified US company."

"Further preliminary analysis on 30 December 2008 indicated an unlabeled jar to be a second jar of thorium. Each bottle of uranium contained depleted uranium 238. Analysis also indicated the two jars of thorium held thorium 232."

"An Internet search of the James B. Cummings Trust indicated that it has an annual income of $10 million," noted a report republished by Wikileaks.

Oh, yeah. Thirteen years ago, the guy's father, James G. Cummings Sr. was also shot and killed. By a "disgruntled employee."

Oddly enough, the family had been in the national headlines not long before, when the now-late James G. Cummings Jr., then a teenager, made a big splash on television news for videotaping his mother allegedly using heroin in order to narc on her.

There's some Texas connection, too, evidently.

By Walter Griffin (Bangor Daily News)[1]

BELFAST, Maine — James G. Cummings, who police say was shot to death by his wife two months ago, allegedly had a cache of radioactive materials in his home suitable for building a “dirty bomb.”

According to an FBI field intelligence report from the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center posted online by WikiLeaks, an organization that posts leaked documents, an investigation into the case revealed that radioactive materials were removed from Cummings’ home after his shooting death on Dec. 9.

The report posted on the WikiLeaks Web site states that “On 9 December 2008, radiological dispersal device components and literature, and radioactive materials, were discovered at the Maine residence of an identified deceased [person] James Cummings.”
It says that four 1-gallon containers of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide, uranium, thorium, lithium metal, thermite, aluminum powder, beryllium, boron, black iron oxide and magnesium ribbon were found in the home.

Also found was literature on how to build “dirty bombs” and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60, radioactive materials. The FBI report also stated there was evidence linking James Cummings to white supremacist groups. This would seem to confirm observations by local tradesmen who worked at the Cummings home that he was an ardent admirer of Adolf Hitler and had a collection of Nazi memorabilia around the house, including a prominently displayed flag with swastika. Cummings claimed to have pieces of Hitler’s personal silverware and place settings, painter Mike Robbins said a few days after the shooting.

An application for membership in the National Socialist Movement filled out by Cummings also was found in the residence, according to the report. Cummings’ wife, Amber B. Cummings, 31, told investigators that her husband spoke of “dirty bombs,” according to the report, and mixed chemicals in her kitchen sink. She allegedly told police that Cummings subjected her to years of mental, physical and sexual abuse. She also said that Cummings was “very upset” when Barack Obama was elected president.

A “dirty bomb” is a type of “radiological dispersal device” that combines a conventional explosive such as dynamite with radioactive material, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Web site. “Most RDDs would not release enough radiation to kill people or cause severe illness,” the NRC says, adding that “a dirty bomb is in no way similar to a nuclear weapon” because its effects occur in a very limited area compared to a nuclear explosion.

The report noted that “uranium, thorium, cesium-137, stontium-90 and cobalt-60 are radioactive isotopes and 35 percent hydrogen peroxide is a necessary precursor for the manufacture of peroxide-based explosives. Lithium metal, thermite and aluminum are materials used to sensitize and amplify the effects of explosives.”

The report stated that the uranium component was bought online from a U.S. company that was identified in the investigation, but not in the report.

John Donnelley, an agent at the FBI’s Boston office, declined Tuesday to comment on the report. Donnelley said some FBI reports are provided to law enforcement agencies and sometimes get released to media outlets.

“I wouldn’t be prepared to speak on that,” Donnelley said. “I have no comment.” The Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center is an intelligence gathering office affiliated with Washington, D.C., law enforcement. Telephone and e-mail messages left with the center Tuesday were not returned.

State police have identified Amber Cummings as the person who shot James Cummings. The couple’s 9-year-old daughter was present the morning of the shooting in what police have described as a domestic violence homicide.

Amber Cummings, who is staying in the Belfast area, has not been charged in the case, although the Waldo County grand jury currently meeting in Belfast could take up the matter during its session this week. While state police have acknowledged that the 29-year-old Cummings was killed by a gunshot, the results of the autopsy have been impounded, as have the search warrants executed at Cummings’ High Street home following the shooting. Authorities spent days searching the home, according to neighbors.

Lt. Gary Wright, who heads up the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division team working the case, declined to comment on any aspects of the case when contacted Tuesday.

“We’re not going to comment on anything,” Wright said Tuesday evening. “It’s an open homicide investigation and we’re not going to comment. That’s our standard policy.”

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, also had no comment on the report. “This is an active, open homicide investigation,” he said Tuesday evening, “and as a result, it’s inappropriate to get into confirming or denying aspects of that.”

Maine Deputy Attorney General William Stokes also declined to comment on the report Tuesday.

David Farmer, spokesman for Gov. John Baldacci, said Tuesday that it was inappropriate for the governor to comment on an open investigation. When asked about the copy of the field report sent to him by the Bangor Daily News, he said, “At this point, I have been unable to confirm the authenticity of the documents you sent to us.”

A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ staff said there was no one able to comment on the report Tuesday night.

Telephone messages left with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were not returned Tuesday evening. Robbins, who worked on the house for a month last summer, described Cummings as an angry person who was verbally abusive to his wife. He said Cummings apparently was independently wealthy and did not work. Robbins said Cummings talked incessantly about his love of guns and his fascination for Hitler. He said Cummings repeatedly berated his wife about home-schooling their daughter. He said Cummings had a controlling personality and wanted to know his wife and child’s every move.

Cummings grew up in California and lived in Texas before moving to Maine in August 2007. Although Robbins said Cummings told him he made his money in Texas real estate, it appears that the actual source of his wealth was a trust fund established by his father, a prominent landowner in the Northern California city of Fort Bragg. An Internet search of the James B. Cummings Trust indicated that it has an annual income of $10 million.

The FBI field intelligence report was apparently first reported on by unattributable.com, an online magazine which covers and blogs on current events.

Interesting that the man moved from Texas to Maine, then began to build his dirty bomb. Does Maine have the death penalty?

One of the reasons I find this so interesting is that I've noticed how often there is a lag between when something gets reported on the internet and when it finally reaches the national tv networks. Sometimes it takes several days. What I've been wondering is whether the networks are being forced to report news they otherwise wouldn't have reported, in other words, they are shamed into doing so.

H's a report in USA Today, but nothing about the dirty bomb:

...The Cummings family settled in Belfast in August 2007. According to records at Belfast City Hall, Cummings bought the fixer-upper in a foreclosure sale through a Florida mortgage company. The couple paid $153,900 for the property....

Nope.

Worst he could get is life. There is a SuperMax though, which some say is worse than death. I heard a story of a former inmate who figured out how to flood his solitary confinement cell by messing with the toilet just so he could be severely beaten by the guards upon detection, you know, for a little human contact and break of monotony. In retrospect, he may have been retarded...

Back to Cummings, he also moved to Belfast specifically, a stereotypical coastal New England town where everybody has their nose up everybody else's business on a first-name basis. Ever seen Murder She Wrote? Just like that, but without the pitiful attempt at the Downeast Maynah accent.

Belfast seems like a strange place to go with the intent of putting together a dirty bomb, given all the remote forest-shrouded rural areas with nobody around for a mile in any direction he could have moved into for way, way, way cheaper than a $150k fixer-upper in Belfast.

According to locals, he was widely known to be a Naziphile and braggart complete with Hitler's own dinnerware, although a filled-out-but-not-mailed membership application to the National Socialist Party being conveniently found in his house sounds kinda like a magic passport.

I also heard he was so verbally abusive to some housepainters trying to fix-up his fixer-upper that they quit on the spot and gifted him the work already completed just so they wouldn't have to talk to him again. It was common knowledge around town that he was at least verbally abusive to his young family.

He stuck out like a sore thumb in that bland little town of inter-generational busybodies and benevolently-eccentric painters. It just seems like such a bad place for someone to go who's trying to work in secret. Although there aren't a lot of Jews around Belfast to speak of, so he was unlikely to encounter the kind of social resistance he would have received in Florida.

He sounds to me like some kind of trust-fund MC victim who was set on a course that ended quite unpredictably. His widow-maker remains at large with no charge, bless her heart. Shouldn't she get some kind of presidential medal or something?

Belfast is also ground zero for the Case of the Missing 13th Amendment.

chiggerbit, I should have stated clearly what you stated on my behalf: There's not only not a good explanation, but not even a good excuse for the story not getting major national play. Assuming the report is accurate**. I mean, he got the depleted uranium ON THE INTERNET.

Of course, that's okay because he's (an apparently Christian) caucasian. But how difficult would it be for someone who wasn't to create a false identity?

Read that part as if it were in green, btw. And also: Thank you for the clear statement.

The other obvious indicator of possible deep politicality is that he was gunning (or dirty-bombing) for the inauguration. And maybe (probably?) Obama. Who's had the aura of potential assassination around him since he announced.

Plus, the national media might feel obligated to renew their condemnation of McCain and (especially) Palin for whipping up so much race-based animosity toward their opponent at rallies. If they even remember it. And they hate doing that. It stinks of context.

But obviously, it should have been widely reported. On its face, it represents a pretty significant threat to homeland security, and a very fucking lax regulatory attitude toward the sale of dirty-bomb components, even though they caught him. Or...I don't know. It did kind of make me think that they might not have to do as much Total Surveillance if they just closed those little loopholes in the online depleted-uranium-sales sector. At least.

There are also some factors and circumstances I'm a little leary about mentioning, because I don't have time to check them for the presence or absence of sinister implications. And there's a very fine line between presenting an untested hypothesis and flat-out fear-based rumor-mongering in this medium. As I think we all know. Or should know, anyway.

But what the hell. Stand by for some possibly unjustified, highly qualified speculative questions. Because for one thing, if anyone else has the time to look into them, that would be great.

** And since there's no way to check the accuracy of the original document, really, it's worth bearing in mind that single-sourced information is, by definition, only one side of the story. As always. But especially when the single source is the federal government. They don't have a very good track record vis-a-vis either reliability or full transparency. I'm not saying the story's bullshit. Just that the only publicly available information on it comes from one source. And one about which it's reasonable to wonder whether either their perception or their presentation of the facts may have been influenced by institutional interests or biases. Quite possibly just in the course of natural events, rather than as part of an evil scheme. That's how single sources are, it's not always their fault. Know what I mean?

She was indicted, and is currently free on bail, which is about what you'd expect if the theory of the case is abused-wife-shoots-husband, if the perp has no priors. Especially when there's a probably traumatized child in the picture, to whom she apparently poses no threat.** (Link to Bangor Daily News story cut-and-pasted below):

Woman accused in spouse’s death released on bail
    By Dawn Gagnon
    BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — A Belfast woman accused of shooting her husband to death two months ago has been released on bail, Waldo County Jail officials confirmed Friday.

Amber B. Cummings, 31, had been held at the Belfast jail since Feb. 13, when she turned herself in to authorities after being indicted on a murder charge by a Waldo County grand jury. During her arraignment on Feb. 17 in 5th District Court, Cummings pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease in the shooting death of her husband late last year.

According to jail officials, Cummings was released on $50,000 cash bail, with several conditions.

Details about bail conditions were not immediately available Friday evening.

State police investigators say that Cummings shot her 29-year-old husband, James G. Cummings, in the couple’s High Street home on Dec. 9 in what they described as a domestic violence homicide.

The couple’s 9-year-old daughter was in the home at the time of the shooting.

A police search of the Cummings home after the murder turned up radioactive materials and instructions for building a dirty bomb. State officials have said that the materials posed no danger to the public.

An internal FBI memo that was leaked from the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center and posted on the Internet last month stated that evidence removed from the home linked James Cummings to dirty bombs and a white supremacist group.

The FBI memo said Amber Cummings told investigators that her husband talked about dirty bombs and mixed chemicals in their kitchen sink.

She said she had endured years of mental, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her husband, according to the memo. It also indicated she told police that her husband was “very upset” when Barack Obama was elected president.

The Cummingses grew up and were married in Fort Bragg, Calif., before leaving there for Texas and eventually Belfast. They moved to Belfast in August 2007 after buying their home in a foreclosure sale for $153,900.

James Cummings was the son of a wealthy Fort Bragg real estate owner who was murdered by a former employee in 1997. The FBI report said Cummings bragged of inheriting $2 million from his father.

** Again, there's not a whole lot of sourcing on any of these points. But assuming. And I don't see a clear reason not to at this point. Although based on the accusations being flung around in the comments section of the Fort Bragg local news articles, I wouldn't be surprised if there are some unsavory details yet to come, either true or smear-campaign-generated. Seems like there's a sizable inheritance to fight over, for one thing.
