"robust" in relation to anything political or economic.

I'm quickly getting sick of "reach out" and "reaching out". Is this just an LA/hollywood thing, or is it everywhere like it is here?

In my experience, it's an LA/Hollywood-ish thing more than it is an LA/Hollywood thing.

But that's really just splitting hairs. I only mean that I think it's basically an LA/Hollywood thing that's also pretty common in a number of DC- and NYC-based sectors/cultures that are technically (and, on some level, actually) dedicated to stuff like policy, politics, hard-news reporting, activism/lobbying, etc., where when you get right down to it -- as the old saying goes -- all business is show business.

Kinda OT, but....While I'm sure there are many more, the main LA/Hollywood usage I think of as being standard in LA/Hollywood but infrequent everywhere else pertains to the description of parties and celebrations as "functions" or "events."

However, that might just be an LA/Hollywood argot vs. NYC/media argot thing. Because I don't really know how parties/events/functions/celebrations are commonly denoted in other industry-oriented cities where there are a lot of people who like to dress up and go out.

So you should probably take that "everywhere else" with a bucket of salt. Is my point.

Also, I like "robust." It's hokey and archaic, true. But that's what I like about it.

  • "Must see TV" - sorry folks, this died with Wings.
  • "I see what you did there." Ex: Somebody makes an unusually bad pun and another person, instead of upbraiding the commenter, says, "I see what you did there." I don't understand it and it should stop.
  • "[x] [y] is [x]" - ex: stupid thread is stupid.
  • "The [x] only thread" ex: The head wounds only thread. We've been seeing diminishing returns on this one. Not that there aren't a lot of head wounds that we could discuss.
  • BREAKING/UPDATE 7X - Just head over to Daily Kos sometime to see this in the field.
  • Indie rock - Basically music by people who insist that the Beach Boys were relevant after Pet Sounds.

"possibly triggering"

I keep thinking of Steve Martin and "cleaning-woman".

I actually make an effort to define genre now because "indie" is meaningless, so I end up saying things like "I don't understand how this screamo-dancepunk got lumped in with this electroclash" and it annoys everyone

But jingo?!?! Wild Honey? Friends? 20/20?? Sunflower??? Maybe not relevant at the time, sure... but c'mon! Not arguing against the binning of 'indie rock' as a term, mind you. Or arguing for it. I don't know what I think.

I was going to type "he should stay away from small planes" in the Norman Finkelstein thread, but I think I'll just say "This person is very brave."
