Jesus, I can't believe that guy stills works in Hollywood. He's not exactly Tom Cruise, the last thing I saw him in was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

I think of Spielberg like Stephen King myself. Too much of a success commercially to be revered as an unparalled artiste. A lot of his stuff is milquetoast too IMO, though he has dealt with serious subjects at times as well.

I never thought of tats as being anything but cool- certainly the result of hanging around bikers and musicians in my teens.

I got my first at the illegal age of seventeen(1981) and hid it from my parents for two years. The ones that followed (all three of them) are esoteric and of personal meaning to me. As I age, I have found that I do not enjoy displaying them in public much, partly because of their personal meaning, partly because their subject matter could lead to difficulties with people who misunderstand the symbolism. I don't think of them as a 'fashion statement', I identify far more with the stone-age shamans who have been found in alp mountain ice than I do with Drew Barrymore, Dennis Rodman or any other celebrity.

Wow, thanks for the Glover article, that was new to me.

There is much exploration of Drew Barrymore and her strange entanglement with Michael Jackson on The Blob and The Sync Whole, in case you haven't seen those particular posts.

What could be the purpose of popularizing tats? Is there a belief in a magical component to wearing particular designs?

IIRC, the Glover article is in Apocalypse Culture II by Adam Parfrey

as for the modern tattoo resurgence, it was going strong by 92 amongst college kids and locals at one large eastern state university town. It might have something to do with the post gulf-war era. That RE:search book (shown above) from '89 was everywhere.

since we've got another douglas coupland thread going... I'd think tattoos are a form of... anti-victim device (ADV) - a small fashion accessory worn on an otherwise conservative outfit which announces to the world that one still has a spark of individuality burning inside: 1940s retro ties and earrings (on men), feminist buttons, noserings (on women), and the now almost completely extinct teeny weeny "rattail" haircut (both sexes). (page 114)

and check out this other definition from the same book:
Brazilification - the widening gulf between the rich and the poor and the accompanying disappearance of the middle classes. (page 11)

Almost TWENTY years later and it's the same shit still today, meanwhile, we continued to be svengali-ed with this talk about the "rapid pace of change". Bullshit, the whole point and secret of modern America is that NOTHING CHANGES, we've been on the same merry-go-round for 50 years.

(An essay concerning the subtext of the film by the same title)
by Crispin Hellion Glover

Isn't it nearly impossible to read an essay composed of one long series of questions? Could he have published it otherwise? Does that give me an idea? Do I have secrets to tell? Can any of these questions be answered? What is the point?

Op: Isn't it terribly unhelpful that some bored celebrity freak has made a blogging career out of wild and ridiculous MC speculations reducing it to a cheap form of entertainment?

re the highlighted passage, seems to be about Crispin Glover.

if it is i can understand your sentiments regarding his media "representation", but this interview might help dispel misconceptions regarding his person and what he was trying at. no offense.

Looks like Speilberg really pissed Glover off royally:
IMDB wrote:Glover and the producers did not come to a financial agreement for him to reprise the role of George McFly in Back to the Future Part II (1989). The producers brought the character back to life by splicing together archived footage and new scenes (using an actor in prosthetic makeup). Glover, who hadn't given permission for his likeness to be used, sued the film's producer, Steven Spielberg, and won. The case prompted the Screen Actors Guild to devise new regulations about the use of actors' images.

Barrymore now is "grown up" and is treated as such. She has no need to prance across Dave's desk. However the topics of "hell", "sinfulness" is the same. Hugh, don't you call this "priming" or something?...

A similar example involves Mark Loizeaux, the president of Controlled Demolition Inc., a key company in the Ground Zero cleanup operation. An article published two days after the attack quotes demolitions expert Loizeaux mischaracterizing the collapse of the South Tower (whose top only began to topple like a tree, but then rapidly disintegrated) and expressing perplexity at the way the North Tower's top telescoped down.

Wesley Willis wrote a song about Crispin Glover:

As so many of Wesley's songs, it's just his name (with Crispin's middle name Hellion thrown in too). I tried to embed it, but without much success.

Vanlose, my bit there was rather in response to the pseudoccultmedia blog.

I have actually been a fan of Crispin Glover, he can be deliciously weird. Speak of David Letterman clips, here he is kicking at Dave:

Loose lips sink ships
Dennis Hopper
They don't love you anymore

Blood trails, blackmails
Leave the light on
Put a key in the back door

Yeah they're laughing at you
They're not laughing with you

It's another guilt slip
On my Freudian trip
And I think the joke's on me

Bad seeds grow weeds
Crispin Glover
I wish you were on my TV

Girl bruise, sad news
On her birthday
Turn the channel and you'll see

That they're laughing at us
They're not laughing with us
And I think the joke's on me

Just another guilt slip
On my Freudian trip
As we choke on the irony

Yeah they're laughing at us
They're not laughing with us
And again the joke's on me

Just another drug slip
On my pagan field trip
Are you saint or celebrity?

Crispin Glover
