Tea Party Counterpart Message Boards?

Postby Luther Blissett » Wed Oct 27, 2010 2:45 pm

I was inspired by some of the discussion on the "Obama Thinks We're Stupid" thread, the comments from Tea Party blogs that JustDrew posted, (and to be fair, the "Man Up" thread from a few weeks ago), to propose that some of us take an e-trip over to one of the more populous and well-known tea party message boards to discourse with them. Could be fun, enlightening, noteworthy.

The only problem is, I wouldn't know where to start looking. What's a good RI counterpart on the opposite end of the spectrum?

In my opinion, the question of an "RI counterpart on the opposite end of the spectrum" assumes some things about that "opposite end" that may not be true.

I didn't know there were any left-wing Tea Party sites.

I only went on a majority conservative board once (I've been on mixed conservative/liberal boards, the cons were somewhat nicer in that setting though I don't think I changed any ossified minds)... It's hard because you get all these responses against you, and most of the people aren't familiar at all with what you're talking about (plus they are not friendly at all, more like rabidly antagonistic). It's hard to be a one man reeducation camp, and you're not even dealing -- generally -- with pliable material.

p.s. Of course, this begs the question, have we created an alternate reality of our own? I've yet to be 100% convinced of this... I think progressives are more aware of the kind or arguments made by the right than vice versa.

I view RI as somewhat authoritative on anti-fascism. I'm just talking about a somewhat authoritative resource on fascism (tea partyism) in which a broad number of participants debate the day's topics.

And Montag, that's why I'm suggesting an e-field trip. A delegation, if you will.

I used to go on some right-wing boards now and then, just for the hell of it.

It's pretty useless. The people are vehemently brainwashed. Heck, I'd tell them I was the son of an Army officer and they wouldn't believe me! Then they'd accuse me of being "French".

I think with a large enough group, we could lead a discussion on one of these message boards. I've often wondered what direction some of our threads would take if posted to a straight-up fascist forum and 50% of the comments were still from RIers. Or if we had a large number of dissenting voices to discourse with.

I like this idea.

This is the first Tea Party message board that a google search turns up.

It actually has some liberal opposition, though I bet we could wreak some havoc as a group.

What you describe is active trolling and I don't understand why your intrigue with it should be impressed upon others here again.

"Discourse" is not trolling. They should WANT discourse.

if you want to read an atypical writer who is still gaspingly and shockingly far-right, try lawrence auster's "view from the right."

it is not the usual republican partisan redneckery.

it is traditionalist to a degree that will appall most RI readers (there is for example, a long and erudite discussion concerning whether women should have the right to vote).

I could go argue with the angriest seniors in the TV room at the long-term care facility down the street, but I doubt I'd change many minds there.

I'm not even convinced of my own beliefs enough to argue for them here.

I wonder what the Synthesis of RI and the Tea Party would be? Probably well within the confines of NPR's target demographic. Bunch of crackers in fucking sweaters talking about New Yorker articles. Spare me.
