"Upbeat" 14 year old leaps to death in front of classmates

Postby Nordic » Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:00 pm

This is very disturbing because this is very close to home for me. My stepdaughter almost went to Santa Monica High, and she's a freshman this year at a different school. And my wife tutors in Santa Monica and knows some of this boy's teammates who watched this happen. And the other night, I was taking the kids down to our favorite video store and we would have driven right past this, but the cops had the street blocked off. The kids wanted me to drive as close as possible to see what it was, but I told them it might be something they didn't want to see. I was right. Because this is what had happened:

Santa Monica High student leaps to his death

The 14-year-old boy jumped from a hotel near the school after bolting from baseball practice. Family, friends and authorities seek answers.

Police and school officials questioned Monday why a seemingly upbeat and well-liked freshman at Santa Monica High School bolted from baseball practice, climbed to the 10th floor of a hotel and leaped to his death.

Matthew Mezza, 14, was reportedly practicing with teammates about 5 p.m. Friday when he abruptly ran from the group, crossed the street to the Sheraton-Delfina Hotel and jumped from the upper floor as his horrified teammates looked on, said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Jay Trisler.

Trisler said he did not have other details. It appears to be a suicide, but an autopsy must be completed before an official determination is made, he said.

Officials with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, which is conducting its own investigation, were unavailable for comment Monday because the district was closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Neil Comess-Daniels, rabbi at Beth Shir Shalom, the synagogue Matthew had attended, said everyone who knew the boy was shocked. He was bright, upbeat and dependable and gave no indication he was seriously troubled, Comess-Daniels said.

"He was certainly not the kind of person you would expect to have these feelings," Comess-Daniels said. "Something went horribly, horribly wrong."

The rabbi was summoned to the hospital Friday evening, but Matthew had died by the time he arrived.

"The family was inconsolable," Comess-Daniels said.

On Monday, a sidewalk tribute just across the street from Santa Monica High's Pico Boulevard entrance was decorated with daisies, spring tulips and roses. Poster boards were filled with loving comments from the teen's classmates and friends.

Rita and Gerald Schneir, Matthew's grandparents, were there trying to make sense of their grandson's impulsive act. Matthew, "the perfect child," had a good relationship with his mother and could tell her anything, his grandmother said.

He was an excellent student, good in sports and had lots of friends who were athletes and top students, she said. There was no indication of trouble or bullying, she said.

"All four of his baseball coaches came to the hospital,'' she said. "They were totally mystified."

On Facebook, Santa Monica High students created several tribute pages to their classmate.

"He will always be in our hearts,' " wrote Veronica Garcia. "Just wish he knew how much of an effect he had on us."

My stepdaugther's best friend went to the kids memorial. And my wife is telling me as I write this that she was just on the phone with the Mom of one of the girls she tutors, and this girl knew him well and they were on the same LaCrosse team, and she's horribly upset. Apparently this girl has been touched by several other teen suicides.

Just very disturbing. And I have to wonder what kind of meds the kid may have been on, because, hell, these things sometimes really loosen up a person's impulse control to dangerous levels.

I don't really have a point here, just wanted to share this with people who might share my feelings on this. I didn't know the kid, but I easily could have.

Wow, Nordic. Not only tragic, but really, really disturbing also.

I'll be interested to find out more.

Abused, medicated, mentally ill, bullied, oppressed, someone broke his heart. Pick one, three, all of them.

Judging from the "upbeat and dependable" description with no indication of disturbance, I would expect he was among those who are medicated without reason, just because the doctor convinced the parents. It happens a lot. We will probably never know, considering all the other crazy shit happening.

Not sure if this incident in France today belongs in this thread - it may well be related to the recent self-immolations in Tunisia and Egypt. But see the last line.

French boy 'sets himself alight at school in Marseille'

A teenage French boy has set himself on fire at his school, officials in Marseille say.

The boy has been rushed to hospital, and officials described his condition as serious.

Rescuers told AFP news agency that the boy doused himself in a flammable liquid in the toilets of his private school in the southern city, before setting himself alight.

No reason for the incident has yet been given.

Officials said the boy had serious burns over 70% of his body.

A pupil at the St Joseph les Maristes school told AFP that he saw the boy on fire running down the stairs towards the school yard, and that a school worker had extinguished the flames.

There have been a spate of self-immolations in North Africa since a young Tunisian man set himself on fire to protest at a lack of job opportunities last month.

Officials have not linked the French boy's immolation with the Tunisian incident, which helped to spark protests that eventually brought down the government.

In November, an 18-year-old schoolboy in Bordeaux set himself on fire. He is still in a coma.

That 10 story jump suicide is awfully odd behavior, of course we can never really know what goes through the mind of someone about to commit suicide. Often they may not give any signs, and
cant even tell their closest friends.

Regarding the accidental LA shooting at school today

"He literally dropped his knapsack on the desk and it went off," Deasy said.

Gannon said the student apologized before running to another classroom.

"He said, 'I'm sorry,' when the gun went off. It made it appear to the teacher that it was an accident," Gannon said.

So, this kid noticed his gun he illegally had went off, critically striking two classmates...and he had an "oh shit, my bad! sorry about that" response, and runs off to class?
Is this reporting accurate? What is this world coming too?

Of course, in right wing world, everyone including infants would have a gun...and everything from relationship drama to grocery bill receipt disputes would require gun action.

Okay, FWIW, an update from my stepdaughter. Word on the street is that the kid had some kind of altercation within his baseball team. He threatened to kill himself. They all tried to calm him down, but at the same time, nobody really believed that he meant it.

He ran across the field, across the street, climbed up to the top of the hotel, and called his Mom on his cell phone.

Then he jumped.

So he obviously had some issues, and it wasn't like he out-of-the-blue spontaneously jumped to his death. Something did indeed instigate it.

It may be odd, but that's somehow slightly comforting. Don't get me wrong, it's still just godawful and tragic, but the way the papers reported it, it sounded like some smiling bright kid suddenly just threw himself off a building with no warning or anything, you know, "look ma! no hands!"

But that wasn't the case.

That poor Mom. How do you live with that?
