One of my favorites! I wrote a blog entry about this. The Primal Forces of Nature vs. The Real Primal Forces of Nature

Sorry to disillusion you but-

'Network' was made as counter-propaganda against the exposure of CIA media.
The bogus decoy concept that "there are no nations, just corporations" was a bone thrown that progressives still chase.

It was meant to protect the National inSecurity State and especially CIA which runs Hollywood.
A former USIA psyops expert named Bruce Herschensohn was about to publish his whistleblowing book called 'The Gods of Antennae.'
Plus CIA director Wim. Colby was giving up the 'family jewels' in closed-door sessions with the (Sen. Frank) Church Commitee and this would be leaked to Carl Bernstein who would write up 'The CIA and the Media' in Rolling Stone 10/20/77.

So the 'corporations rule' meme is cover for the CIA which uses them as fronts and proxy forces.
Even Thom CIA Hartmann uses the 'evil corporations' limited-hangout as his cred prop to infiltrate the Left.
CIA runs mainstream media since WWII:
news rooms, movies/TV, publishing
...
Disney is CIA for kidz!

Not to worry, Hugh.

I welcome occasional episodes of disillusionment.

They're a necessary component of reality checks.

Hugh... Imagine someone's opinion stated as fact, over and over and over again.

Learn these words:

"possibly", "maybe", "may", "perhaps", "might" and "IMHO".

You don't know everything, you know. You do not have a monopoly on logic.

And that clip from Network is awesome.

I don't get it. Are you saying there's a difference between the CIA and Wall Street?

I believe he is saying the almost the opposite. Or well, that corporations are the front for CIA operations to deflect attention away:

Ha. But you know even if those two worlds have substantially interwoven networks it is nonetheless true that it is illegal for the CIA to be engaged in domestic propagandizing, whereas corporations are expected to lie and distort and use every trick in the book short of certain subliminal techniques to separate you from your money. The line between marketing/advertising and agitprop/propaganda is a thin one. It's a theoretical distinction worth noting and I guess it's the one Hugh is making, but really I think a likely better and more accurate way to think about it is that these are two worlds which work synergistically, rather than one being master of the other. It's a self perpetuating system. Our Howard Beale is Glenn Beck. Not very endearing, but frighteningly effective.

I want to be among those that exalt human intelligence and hold with the primacy of free will above any form of conditioning. I want to believe that people are too savvy, empathic and perceptive to be fooled by the ersatz reality they are immersed in. I want to believe in the goodness of people. I want to believe the masters of propaganda, even with all their evil genius, are doomed to fail. But there's so much evidence, anecdotal as it is, to the contrary. How else do I explain that something close to half the population of Wisconsin blame public employee unions for the state's deficit and believe governor Walker is a valiant reformer making the difficult decisions. How else do I explain Glenn Beck's audience share?

This:

I suppose must have been intended as a diversion from the fact that corporations rule the world.

.
This one's a bit melodramatic, but it nails the point, just like the OP. The "radicals" are poorly served in terms of acting and dialogue - maybe it's meant to be how Nixon saw them.
