And, I'm not terribly familiar with Robert David Steele, although he's a former intelligence officer (which always gives me pause), and he's quite outspoken regarding the lies of 9/11. ‘USA might face a potentially violent revolution’

Fury over corporate power in the US is spreading from New York across the country. Thousands have joined the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement, angered by the economic slump that may lead to a revolution in the country.

Robert David Steele, political analyst and former intelligence officer, told RT the US right now is much more desperate than people realize.

“We have 22 per cent unemployment and on our way to 30 per cent. We are 16 per cent below the poverty line and on our way to 30 per cent. There is no question in my mind that this is going to be a very dark winter in the United States,” he stated. “Unless the government restores its own integrity and starts paying attention to the public interest rather than to the special interests, I believe that we will have a form of revolution, initially non-violent, but with the potential to become violent,” he added.

Despite the fact that “Occupy Wall Street” protesters have raised everything from lack of jobs to global warming, there is a common cause uniting the activists, Steele believes.

“These are not stupid people. They are very smart and they understand that at root this is about corruption in government and corruption on Wall Street,” he explained. “And until you have electoral reform, you cannot restore the integrity of US government. So there is a common cause, but it is voiced in many different ways,” he maintained.

The protest started out peacefully, but now it is the third week and more than 700 people have been arrested on Brooklyn Bridge. And according to Steele, the NYC police have on the one hand been very well-managed and on the other hand have gotten out of control at lower levels.

“My personal hope is that the general non-violent strike will be used to force the issue of electoral reform,” he concluded.

Per usual ninakat you show up with some great finds. I share your skeptical attitude about this former intelligence officer. He is talking bullshit.

His "root" is no root at all. The root is the debt based economy and nothing more. His pocket is full of Red Herrings in my opinion. Fuck this guy, and Nader too, if this is the best Nader has to offer. His approach is an endless quagmire of political bullshit and probably an attempt to co-opt the movement.

caveat emptor: I have not read or listened to the whole interview, but if this is the best the guy has to offer i'm down on him.

This is a scary deal. Since the war chant is "we are the 99%", if this movement is co-opted or gets co-opted later on, it will sink liberty for a long time. Most lambs will assume that "they" have spoken for themselves and will accept another round of endless horse shit. I hope this goes well but i'm holding my breath. It has not gone well for any of the middle eastern countries so far....I fear for us all.

Iceland and Greece seem to understand the "root problem" but I don't know about the rest...

***On edit. I listened to the interview and this guy is full of shit as a Christmas Turkey.
Thanks ninakat for finding this guy. I'll watch him and Nader both now.

I was always in favor of this action (occupation) and wished it would happen years ago, as the only possibility for getting a movement going against the corporations and banks. I was cautiously pessimistic about whether it would work without prior organizing as an Internet announcement on the first try, and now that it has, I am endlessly pleased about how it's gone. We should all be grateful to those who have made it possible by keeping their bodies on the line 24/7. It's really thanks to them. And now? We've each of us got to find our ways to help and add to this. I don't think it's going away. This is not just fashion!

I know what you're saying eyeno. Worth keeping an eye on him and anyone else with a platform, to see what they're up to -- because, co-opting is the biggest threat to the movement. And, the part that disturbed me most was when he (Robert David Steele) put a deadline on when the protesters need to respond with a plan for electoral reform. Well, I haven't read the 9-point plan, but what's with November 1 ("they're toast by the 1st of November unless they get their act together") and the July 4, 2012 deadline for adopting his and Nader's pet plan? And, honestly, "electoral reform" doesn't dig nearly deep enough -- like you said, it's the debt-based economy at the root of the problem. Now, maybe part of the 9-point plan is to throw out ALL the bastards on both sides of aisle, end the wars, impeach the president for war crimes, imprison Bernanke et al, and adopt a fair and sustainable economic system that takes into consideration declining resources, climate change, and the lies of the endless growth model.... Uh, no, I can already tell you there's not even hope for that kind of change in their model.

I wasn't able to spend much time at the protest today, so I only have a few new photos.

This guy was standing at the head of the park, handing out posters (the one on his sandwich board) attracting A LOT of attention, including a trio of cops who were being much more vigilant than usual about making sure that passers-by didn't linger and block pedestrian traffic.

And this gal was terrific. She was in character as Emma Goldman, and she stood on her makeshift soapbox, rallied for anarchy, and read poems. It was very surreal and inspiring.

In Philly, the city wants to give us a permit, but we're not sure if we want to take it. The ACLU is recommending that we do. In GA, we voted to postpone the vote until tomorrow.

Police present is still really minimal.
