South Carolina college discloses abuse allegation

By Harriet McLeod, Reuters

CHARLESTON, S.C. - In the wake of the Penn State child sex abuse scandal, The Citadel military college in South Carolina said on Saturday it had investigated accusations against a camp counselor but took no action.

The man has since been arrested on separate charges of molesting five boys in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, near Charleston.

“We regret that we did not pursue this matter further,” Citadel President Lieutenant General John Rosa and Board of Visitors Chair Doug Snyder said in a statement.

The Citadel said that four years ago it investigated four accusations of inappropriate conduct with children against Louis Neal “Skip” ReVille, who was a counselor at the military school’s camp.

ReVille is a graduate of The Citadel, the college said, and worked as a counselor at the school’s camp for three summers from 2001 to 2003.

In 2007, a former camper told the school that five years earlier, when he was 14, he and another boy were invited by ReVille into his room where the three watched pornography on ReVille’s computer and masturbated, college officials said.

“Because of the seriousness of the accusation, The Citadel’s general counsel conducted an investigation immediately, including traveling to the individual and his family and conducting an interview,” the statement said.

“A thorough review of Mr. ReVille’s records revealed no other complaints, and interviews indicated that he was highly regarded by those at camp. His file included a clean background check conducted by an outside organization. Unlike his admissions to current charges, Mr. ReVille strongly denied the accusation.”

After graduation from The Citadel, ReVille was a principal at Coastal Christian Preparatory School and had coached sports for years at several area schools and recreation centers, police said.

He was arrested in October on separate child molestation charges.

The Citadel said it was commenting on the incident now because of media requests after the Penn State sex abuse scandal. Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team, was charged on Nov. 5 with sexually abusing eight young boys over a period of nearly 15 years.

That scandal led to the firings of celebrated Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno, and the school’s president.

Judge Who Set Unsecured Bail For Jerry Sandusky Is a Second Mile Volunteer

Image

http://deadspin.com/5859075/judge-who-s ... -volunteer

When Jerry Sandusky was initially arraigned, as previously reported by Sara Ganim, prosecutors requested $500,000.00 bail and that Sandusky be required to wear a leg monitor. District Judge Leslie Dutchcot, however, ordered that Sandusky be freed on $100,000.00 unsecured bail. She ordered that Sandusky be freed and pay nothing unless he failed to show up for a court hearing.

Judge Dutchcot has quite the professional resume. In addition to her duties as District Judge, she is of counsel to the firm Goodall & Yurchak. It speaks to the small town nature of the county, I suppose, that the firm's URL is "centrelaw.com." According to her profile, Judge Dutchcot has been named the State College Lawyer of the Year, completed a "Leadership" program and has served as a counselor at Centre County Law Enforcement Camp Cadet, Inc.

Of course, also according to her profile, Judge Dutchcot is a volunteer for Sandusky's group, The Second Mile. Sandusky turned himself in the morning of November 5, a Saturday, at Judge Dutchot's Centre County office. He was released, under the aforementioned terms, shortly thereafter.

Attorneys often serve charitable foundations in their pro bono capacities, or just volunteer in their spare time, so there is nothing weird about that. It just seems that, given the nature of the charges, the small town atmosphere and her relationship to Second Mile, Judge Dutchcot should have recused herself from being involved with this process. Or, that could be precisely why she did not.

Penn State to Get Hit With Civil Suit, Sources Say

Nov 13, 2011 2:14 PM EST
A lawyer in State College, Pa., tells Jessica Bennett and Jacob Bernstein his clients are preparing a case against the university.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... urces.html

Alleged victims of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are working with at least two legal teams to prepare civil lawsuits against the university—seeking damages from the university over administrators’ failure to take action.

"This may be the most high-profile sexual abuse case ever," says Benjamin Andreozzi, a Harrisburg, Pa., lawyer who is representing at least one of the victims listed in grand jury filings. Adreozzi noted that once other potential victims see that they're "not alone," perhaps they'll come forward, too.

A second lawyer who requested anonymity told The Daily Beast he was representing another alleged victim.

Eight victims of alleged sexual predator Sandusky, the 67-year-old former Penn State assistant football coach, have been listed in a grand jury filing that was released last week—and at least one more is believed to have come forward since then. A source inside the state police told The Daily Beast last week that phone lines set up for victims and tips have been flooded with calls.

Attorneys close to the cases, meanwhile, believe the number of victims will grow dramatically in the coming days. “I think things are going to be fast and furious over the next weeks,” says Manning J. O’Connor, an attorney in Pittsburgh who has been following the case.

.....

“If the allegations are true, the institution’s silence, and failure to act, not only emboldened a predator, but silences the victims,” says Andrew Shubin, a State College, Pa., attorney, who has been litigating civil rights cases for 21 years. “These children must have believed that the institution didn’t care about them, because it did nothing to protect them."

There are a few ways civil lawsuits might come together, say experts. It's likely that attorneys would file a federal civil rights action—arguing that the administration violated the victims’ 14th amendment right to bodily integrity in its failure to notify the appropriate authorities. This is a tactic commonly used in cases involving sexual assault.

"A civil-rights lawsuit," says Shubin, "is a way in which victims of abusers can hold perpetrators—and those who enabled and covered for them—accountable when all other systems have failed them.”

There is also the possibility of a state action—against individual administrators—that would charge them with negligence. A suit looking for monetary damages from Sandusky is also likely. And then, of course, there is Second Mile, the nonprofit that Sandusky founded, from where he allegedly recruited his prey. There is plenty of speculation about how much administrators at the organization knew—as well whether the center could lose $3 million in state funding promised to the organization for the construction of a 45,000-square foot learning center that was supposed to come with dorm rooms, locker areas, and showers.

In Pennsylvania, the statute of limitations for childhood victims of sexual abuse to file a civil claim is age 30—which would give attorneys some time, since most of the known victims are in their 20s.

And as for the criminal filings? At least one attorney has speculated that there could be more to come in the way of a federal charge for Sandusky taking his victims across state lines. A woman who had children with Jerry Sundusky's adopted son has also filed a court plea to keep Sandusky from having unsupervised contact or overnight visits with his grandchildren. According to the Patriot News, which broke the story of the Sandusky investigation in early 2010, Matt Sandusky took his children to his father's house the same day the former coach was arrested.

Will more victims ultimately come forward? "Each person deals with it in a different way, and some people may feel comfortable and it may be part of the healing process," says Andreozzi.

But the healing process won't be easy.

“Very few people come out unfazed by something like this,” says Alan Perer, a Pittsburgh attorney who represented dozens of victims in the Catholic archdiocese scandal. “They grow up, they either have problems with alcohol or drugs, it goes on for the rest of your life. You just don’t get over it.” [quote]

Just Drew, I believe you are correct. I thought the first articles came out around March 2011.

the new morality: GRAR-generally regarded as right, and GRAW-generally regarded as wrong. (tip hat to the psyop and industrial monopoly protection racket, the FDA). to the audience of the glowing box: pedophilia is GRAW. to the administrators of the glowing box linked with the police and constabulary: pedophilia is GRAR. it's all relative to the demarcation line. spilling over into the audience is the only risk the administrators run. those parts are easily amputated and cauterized so the show can go on...

From Touched: the Jerry Sandusky Story:

In "Touched," Sandusky paints a picture of himself as someone who would consistently take risks in pursuit of what he often refers to as "mischief."

"My father probably spoke the most truthful words about me that had ever been spoke," he writes. " 'Jer,' he said, 'you could mess up a free lunch.' ... I thrived on testing the limits of others and I enjoyed taking chances in danger."

After founding his charity, one night Sandusky was talking to two Second Mile boys who had rebelled against their foster parents. The foster father "grabbed me around the back of my shoulders and he made me do something when I didn't want to do it," one boy told Sandusky. "Do you ever grab your kids like that?"

" 'No, I don't grab my kids like that,' " Sandusky answered. " 'I grab them like this.' With that, I put my hands gently around their throat.

"I could tell they were totally confused," Sandusky wrote. "Both boys had a scared look in their eyes."

The book repeatedly described Sandusky hugging boys and talking about being very close to boys he met through the charity. He writes of the photos that adorn his office walls, "They are kids that have touched my life and have been a part of me for a long, long time."

"I believe I live a good part of my life in a make-believe world," Sandusky wrote in one of the final chapters. "I enjoyed pretending as a kid, and I love doing the same as an adult with these kids."

Jerry Sandusky concludes his 238-page autobiography with these words: "I ended my career the way I wanted it to end. ... This is how I have been touched by so many people in my lifetime, and how I hope I can add a little touch to others' lives as well."

It seems like the revelations are going to keep coming for a while until someone can figure out how to cap this reality gusher.

Second Mile CEO steps down
Jack Raykovitz, who headed charity during Jerry Sandusky scandal, is the latest official to go.

The longtime CEO of a children's' charity founded by disgraced former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky has stepped down amid the growing scandal.

Jack Raykovitz, who headed The Second Mile for 28 years, resigned yesterday. He's the latest official to go after child abuse charges were announced against Sandusky earlier this month, following head coach Joe Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier.

Authorities say Sandusky used his prominent position with The Second Mile to lure and sexually assault boys, some as young as 10. He's been charged with 40 counts alleging he molested eight boys over the past 15 years, showering them with football tickets and free trips but forcing himself upon them in his Centre County home or in Penn State's football facilities.

"Although the allegations against Jerry Sandusky and the alleged incidents occurred outside Second Mile programs and events, this does not change the fact that the alleged sexual abuse involved Second Mile program children, nor does it lessen the terrible impact of sexual abuse on its victims," the release read.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The president of the charity linked to the Penn State child
sex-abuse scandal has resigned, saying he hopes his departure after 28 years as
the group's CEO would help restore faith in its mission.
The Second Mile's board of directors said in a statement Monday that it had
accepted the resignation of Jack Raykovitz.
Raykovitz, a practicing psychologist, had testified before the grand jury that
indicted Second Mile founder Jerry Sandusky on 40 counts of child abuse. The
grand jury said Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, found
his victims through the charity's programs.
The board also said that would conduct an internal investigation to assess
policies and make recommendations regarding future operations. They hope to have
those findings by the end of December.
Raykovitz said in a statement Monday that he hopes his resignation would mark
the beginning of a "restoration of faith in the community of volunteers and
staff" at The Second Mile.
Sandusky founded The Second Mile in 1977. The group has said that its youth
programs serve as many as 100,000 children a year.
Sandusky, who retired from Penn State in 1999, informed The Second Mile board in
November 2008 that he was under investigation. The charity subsequently barred
him from activities involving children, charity officials said.
The ex-coach is accused of assaulting eight children over a 15-year span. His
attorney has said he's innocent.
Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz
were charged with perjury
. Both have denied wrongdoing and have left their
university posts.
The scandal led to the departure of university President Graham Spanier and the
dismissal of legendary head coach Joe Paterno after law enforcement officials
said they didn't do enough to stop suspected abuse when it was reported to them
in 2002.

The 13-year-old will be held at the Detention Center to await further proceedings on the charge

Magistrate Virginia Sturgessrefused bailon the basis of the nature of the alleged offences and the man's criminal history. He will next appear in court on December 7.
Mazars and Deutsche Bank could have ended this nightmare before it started.
They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.
Don’t forget that.

"Pictures of Boyhood." A searingly articulate essay by Richard Hoffman, a survivor of sexual violence in childhood. "Hard questions about the relationship of American sports culture — some would say the American cult of sports — to the sexual abuse of boys."

Perhaps its dangerous to raise this spectre, but either someone is letting this move forward, or pretty soon we're going to see the "Franklining" character assassination of the mothers and parents of the boys. I've been invariably cringing when reading some of the transcribed quotes of the mothers, the way the papers seem to want to communicate the notion that these are women from hardscrabble rural Pennsylvania and thereby possibly untrustworthy themselves.

The more the crimes are thought to be unbelievable, the more I fear people will stop believing the victim and witness testimony. Sandusky may end up proving himself to be such a monster that he walks free.

This was a huge scandal in Allentown, I was fifteen at the time that Half the House was published. My father was devastated for weeks, as it turned out some people we knew had been victims. What a mess.

It's frightening to read Richard Hoffman's memories of baseball with all the same placenames as my own. I was a catholic altar boy, in the scouts, played baseball and was a sensitive, artistic boy. His piece makes me wonder if I escaped abuse (one of the mongsignors, whose cabin in the Poconos we used as our one "light" camping trip out of the year, was later found guilty of child abuse) because I was tall and strong - (edit) but that's not accurate and I know that it could've and did happen to anyone.

Allentown is just a place filled with fathers crying over the loss of industry, and sports culture is huge there because of it. When Hoffman got to the part about Teddy's hazing, I suddenly remembered that up to the year that I was entering into my sophomore year of high school, the freshman football team was brutally hazed in a ceremony involving crowding the varsity team on either side of the long basement corridor into the locker rooms beneath the pool, turning the lights out, and beating the kids as they tried to run down the hall. The rumors always carried a vaguely sexual tone that I can't precisely remember, but can only recall the feeling of being horrified at the apprehension of being forced to endure this well beyond a standard beating.

Edited for clarity and expansion.
