German hacker in Berlin known as Boris Floricic, aka Tron, disappeared while walking home from his parents' home one day. He was found several days later hanging from a belt in a park.

Among his possessions, authorities found correspondence from NDS. NDS later said it had offered Boris a job, which he had rejected. Prior to his death, Boris had obtained source code and information about hacking access cards that were being used in a German satellite TV system. His friends in the German hacker group, Chaos Computer Club, were convinced that he'd met with foul play...

Chaos Computer Club

BERLIN -- Tempers flared at Sunday's Chaos Communication Congress session, and the death of a famous Chaos Computer Club member was the flashpoint.

The conference assembles computer enthusiasts from around the world for three days of hacking, discussions, and workshops on topics ranging from alternative operating systems to TCP/IP penetration to the state of the hacker ethic.

This year, the mysterious disappearance of German hacker Boris Floricic -- also known as Tron -- on 17 October and the discovery of his body in a Berlin park five days later has been Topic A.

CCC spokesman Andy Mueller-Maguhn presented a timeline of events surrounding Floricic's death. A heated discussion centered on two points that continue to rile CCC members.

First was a refusal by the Berlin police to waive the 48-hour waiting period before referring the case to the Bureau of Missing Persons. Second was the decision by the police to file charges against Tron.

By 20 October, the 26-year-old hacker was not only officially missing, but also under suspicion of committing computer fraud. Tron's computer, laptop, and all his equipment and files were confiscated.

Two police officers unofficially addressed the issues Sunday. They said that the missing-person investigation was not compromised by the criminal case, since they were being handled separately.

Responding to emotional outbursts from Tron's friends calling suicide out of the question, officer Klaus Ruckschnat reminded the crowd that the official line was still "apparent suicide." That is, the police have not yet ruled out the possibility that Tron was murdered.

Padeluun, a longstanding member of the CCC, gently suggested that "sometimes things are what they seem." In other words, just as the police weren't ruling out murder, the CCC should not rule out suicide.

Mueller-Maguhn outlined the areas of Tron's work that may have got him in trouble with any number of parties. The young hacker cracked phone cards and digital set-top boxes for pay TV, and his university dissertation was on ISDN-related cryptography.

"Tron may have underestimated the financial value of the information he uncovered," said Mueller-Maguhn. "He was always direct and honest, but also naive."

The CCC settled on no unified position regarding Tron's fate, but some audience members agreed that if a lesson is to be learned from his death, it is to publish valuable information widely as soon as it's discovered. Or risk life and limb.

Earlier, CCC co-founder Wau Holland shared his personal observations on a decade and a half of CCC history and controversy. Among its "accomplishments," the CCC had cracked the German postal network, planted a Trojan horse in NASA's computer system, and seen the death of one of its own before.

"In every case," said Holland, "the club has retained its independence. We don't take sides."

Other conference events this week include a lockpicking contest, a robot-building contest, and a report on "Hacking the KGB: 10 Years After."

Rupert Murdoch Firm Goes on Trial for Alleged Tech Sabotage
TV pirates, ex-spies, and a hacker that mysteriously commits suicide. Just some of the characters behind a lawsuit over access cards in the global pay-TV war.
by Kim Zetter, for Wired Apr 21 2008

Did a Rupert Murdoch company go too far and hire hackers to sabotage rivals and gain the top spot in the global pay-TV war?

This is the question a jury will be facing in a spectacular five-year-old civil lawsuit that is finally being tried this month in California but which has, oddly, received little notice from U.S. media.

The case involves a colorful cast of characters that includes former intelligence agents, Canadian TV pirates, Bulgarian and German hackers, stolen e-mails and the mysterious suicide of a Berlin hacker who had been courted by the Murdoch company not long before his death.

On the hot spot is NDS Group, a UK-Israeli firm that makes smartcards for pay-TV systems like DirecTV. The company is a majority-owned subsidiary of Murdoch's News Corporation. The charges stem from 1997 when NDS is accused of cracking the encryption of rival NagraStar, which makes access cards and systems for EchoStar's Dish Network and other pay-TV services. Further, it’s alleged NDS then hired hackers to manufacture and distribute counterfeit NagraStar cards to pirates to steal Dish Network's programming for free.

NagraStar and one of its parent companies, EchoStar, are seeking about $101 million for damages for piracy, copyright infringement, misconduct and unfair competition. The list of witnesses in the case includes EchoStar's founder and CEO Charlie Ergen; several hackers and pirates; and Reuven Hazak, an Israeli who heads security for NDS and is a former deputy head of Shabak, or Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security agency (the equivalent of Britain's MI5)...

But rather than deal with its security breach, NDS hired Tarnovsky and other pirates who had compromised its system to help the company hack and pirate its competitors' cards and even out the playing field, it is alleged.

In addition to Tarnovsky, the company also hired Oliver Kommerling, a hacker known for writing the primer on cracking smartcards. Kommerling has acknowledged in an affidavit that he helped NDS set up a research lab in Haifa, Israel, where NagraStar's smartcard was allegedly cracked by NDS engineers.

NDS didn't hire only hackers, however. According to EchoStar/NagraStar, it also hired a handful of other people with colorful pasts who they say had a role in hacking and pirating EchoStar/NagraStar. There was Reuven Hazak, who had been deputy head of Israel's Shin Bet during the notorious Bus 300 incident (when two Palestinian terrorists who hijacked an Israeli bus were killed in custody by a Shin Bet agent. Hazak eventually blew the whistle on the subsequent cover-up).

NDS also hired a former U.S. Navy intelligence officer named John Norris and a former Scotland Yard commander named Ray Adams. Finally, it hired a former would-be terrorist, Yossi Tsuria, who became chief technical officer of its lab in Israel. Tsuria was part of a radical group of Jewish Israelis in the 1980s that plotted to bomb the Dome of the Rock -- a shrine that sits on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a holy site for both Jews and Muslims.

NDS has maintained in public statements that Hazak, Norris and its other security officers were hired to help it track down hackers and pirates and get them arrested. But EchoStar and NagraStar allege that Hazak and Norris played central roles in committing hacking and piracy as well.

In late 1997, NDS researchers in Israel reportedly cracked the NagraStar card after about six months of effort, using an electron microscope.

NagraStar became aware its card was hacked in late 1998 when meeting with DirecTV to discuss the pay-TV company's desire to switch from the hacked NDS cards to NagraStar's cards. But DirecTV employees surprised NagraStar at the meeting when they informed NagraStar that its cards had also been hacked.

EchoStar/NagraStar claim that NDS, aware that DirecTV was about to abandon its cards in favor of NagraStar cards, cracked NagraStar's card to discourage DirecTV from making the switch.

After NDS cracked its rival's card, Tarnovsky and his associates allegedly created and sold counterfeit NagraStar cards through a piracy site based in Canada, among others, that allowed pirates to access Dish Network programs for free. Tarnovsky is also accused of later posting on the Canadian site the code, secret keys and instructions for hacking the microprocessor on EchoStar's access cards, allowing pirates to flood the market with even more cards. He has denied the allegations. Hazak and Norris are accused of providing Tarnovsky with the code so he could post it online, but NDS maintains this didn't happen.

According to court documents, the sabotage scheme worked remarkably well throughout 1998 and 1999 as counterfeit NagraStar cards flooded the market.

It was around this time, however, that a German hacker in Berlin known as Boris Floricic, aka Tron, disappeared while walking home from his parents' home one day.

This conversation, in which Sandusky in effect admits that there are other victims, and even refuses to say he’ll stop victimizing children, was surreptitiously observed by a PSU police detective, who was then ordered by the head of campus police to drop the matter. (The local district attorney, who for unknown reasons decided not to press charges, disappeared in 2005 and was declared legally dead in July)...

By E. EDUARDO CASTILLO, Associated Press
MEXICO CITY — The country's top Cabinet secretary, Francisco Blake Mora, a key
figure in Mexico's battle with drug cartels, died in a helicopter crash Friday
with seven others
, including the pilot, the government said.
The Presidency spokeswoman, Alejandra Sota, said authorities located the bodies
of the secretary and seven others. They included Interior Undersecretary Felipe
Zamora, said agency spokesman Jose Alfredo Garcia.
Calderon appointed Blake Mora as interior secretary in July 2010.
Blake Mora was traveling to a prosecutors' meeting in the neighboring state of
Morelos when the helicopter went down in a mountainous area of Mexico state
southeast of Mexico City. Officials said they did not immediately know the cause
of the crash.
The secretary of the interior is the country's top official after the president,
overseeing internal political affairs and security, making him a key figure in
directing the battle against drug cartels, as well as negotiating with
opposition political parties and with the legislature.
President Felipe Calderon lost Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mourino in the
crash of a Learjet in Mexico City on Nov. 4, 2008. Despite widespread
speculation that that accident, which killed 14, was caused by sabotage,
investigators eventually ruled that out and blamed pilot error.
One of Blake's last postings on his Twitter account commemorated the loss of
Mourino
"Today we remember Juan Camilo Mourino three years after his death, a person who
was working to build a better Mexico," Blake tBlake Mora, 45, started his political career in the mid-1990s as an official in
weeted on Nov. 4.
his native Tijuana and served as a federal congressman through the 2000s, as
well as interior secretary of Baja California.
Like Mourino, he was Calderon's point man in the government's war against
organized crime, frequently traveling to the country's most dangerous places for
meetings with besieged state and local security officials.
He was an embodiment of the Mexican government's get-tough attitude, publicly
pledging to bring the fight to the traffickers instead of backing down.
"Organized crime, in its desperation, resorts to committing atrocities that we
can't and shouldn't tolerate as a government and as a society," he said.
He also oversaw response to disasters, such as flooding and the massive oil
pipeline explosion that laid waste to parts of the central city of San Martin
Texmelucan last year, killing at least 28 people.
He led the creation of a new national identity card for youths under 18, with
modern features including digitalized fingerprints and iris images, to prevent
criminals from using false IDs.

In May 1996, Roy J. Gricar -- Ray Gricar's brother and Tony Gricar's father -- disappeared in Dayton, Ohio. His car was found abandoned across the street from the office where his son worked. A search of the area was conducted, but authorities found no trace of Roy Gricar.

Roy Gricar was missing for a few days before his body turned up in the Great Miami River. The coroner later ruled Roy Gricar's death a suicide by drowning. He reportedly had been fired from his job as a private contractor at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in the days leading up to his death and had suffered from bipolar disorder.

Mexican interior secretary dies in helicopter crash
Francisco Blake Mora was killed in Mexico City with seven others while travelling to meeting in state of Morelos

The Guardian
Saturday 12 November 2011

Image

Mexico's interior minister, Francisco Blake Mora, a key figure in the country's battle with drug cartels, died on Friday in a helicopter crash that President Felipe Calderón said was probably an accident.

Calderón said the helicopter was flying in fog when it went down in a remote area south-east of Mexico City and that all possible causes were under investigation.

"Mexico has lost a great patriot … and I lost a dear friend," said Calderón. "He was not only an exemplary minister, he was an exemplary Mexican."

Authorities said the junior minister for human rights, Felipe Zamora, was among the seven others also killed, including the pilot.

Calderón appointed Blake Mora as interior minister in July 2010. That put him in charge of co-ordinating domestic policies including security, human rights, migration and the president's relation with the legislature and opposition parties.

His death, while a blow to the government, is not likely to change policy or day-to-day operations.

Blake Mora was travelling to a prosecutors' meeting in the neighbouring state of Morelos when the helicopter went down in a mountainous area of Mexico State.

Calderón lost another interior minister, Juan Camilo Mourino, in the crash of a Learjet in Mexico City on 4 November 2008. Despite widespread speculation that the accident, which killed 16, was caused by sabotage, investigators eventually blamed pilot error.

Suspicions commonly swirl around the deaths of prominent people in Mexico, and Calderón appeared to try to quell any suggestions of sabotage this time, saying Blake Mora's helicopter "was always under guard" in the hangar of Mexico's secret service and that it had recently undergone maintenance.

One of Blake Mora's last postings on his Twitter account commemorated the loss of Mourino. "Today we remember Juan Camilo Mourino three years after his death, a person who was working to build a better Mexico," Blake Mora tweeted on 4 November.

Blake Mora, 45, started his political career in the mid-1990s as an official in his native Tijuana and served as a federal congressman through the 2000s, as well as interior secretary of Baja California.

Blake Mora's funeral was scheduled for Saturday. Calderon cancelled many of his appearances, including a trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meeting of world leaders in Hawaii next week.

Woman implicated in alleged robo-signing scheme found dead
Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 | 5:45 p.m.
Las Vegas Sun
Gregan Wingert

A 43-year-old woman who pleaded guilty in an alleged robo-signing scheme was found dead Monday at her northwest valley home, authorities said.

Tracy Lawrence, a Las Vegas notary, was scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Monday for her sentencing hearing after she pleaded guilty Nov. 14 to one count of notarizing the signature of an individual not in her presence, according to Jennifer Lopez, public information officer for the Nevada Attorney General’s Office. Notary fraud carries a potential jail sentence of one year and a fine of up to $2,000.

Lawrence had been charged in a larger case investigated by the attorney general’s mortgage fraud task force, according to Chief Deputy Attorney General John Kelleher.

The task force investigated tens of thousands of allegedly fraudulent foreclosure documents filed with the Clark County recorder’s office between 2005 and 2008, officials said.

When Lawrence failed to show up for court, the attorney general’s office sent an investigator to check on Lawrence at her home at the 4600 block of North Rainbow Boulevard, Lopez said.

Investigators found the woman dead about 11:30 a.m. and notified Metro Police, Lopez said.

The Clark County coroner’s office said a determination on the cause of death is pending results of a toxicology report that will take six to eight weeks.

Metro’s homicide unit is investigating the case, but the death is not being considered a homicide, police said.

Eugene Mallove ... (June 9, 1947 – May 14, 2004) was a scientist, science writer, editor and publisher of the magazine Infinite Energy, founder of the non-profit New Energy Foundation, a strong proponent of cold fusion, and a supporter of research into that and related exploratory alternative energy topics, some of which are sometimes disparaged, for one reason or another, as "fringe science".

Mallove authored Fire from Ice, a book detailing the 1989 report of table-top cold fusion from Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann at the University of Utah. Among other things, the book claims the team did produce "greater-than-unity" output energy in an experiment successfully replicated on several occasions, but that the results were suppressed through an organized campaign of ridicule from mainstream physicists, including those studying controlled thermonuclear fusion, trying to protect their research and funding.

Mallove was murdered in 2004 while cleaning out his former childhood home, which had been rented out. As of May 2011, three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the killing, but no trials have been held.[1]\

Biography

Eugene Mallove held a BS (1969) and MS degree (1970) in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from MIT and a ScD degree (1975) in environmental health sciences from Harvard University. He had worked for technology engineering firms such as Hughes Research Laboratories, the Analytic Science Corporation, and MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, and he consulted in research and development of new energies.

Mallove taught science journalism at MIT and Boston University and was chief science writer at MIT's news office, a position he left as part of a dispute with the school over cold fusion.

He was a science writer and broadcaster with the Voice of America radio service and author of three science books: The Quickening Universe: Cosmic Evolution and Human Destiny (1987, St. Martin’s Press), The Starflight Handbook: A Pioneer’s Guide to Interstellar Travel (1989, John Wiley & Sons, with co-author Gregory Matloff), and Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor (1991, John Wiley & Sons).[2] He also published articles for numerous magazines and newspapers.

Mallove was a member of the Aurora Biophysics Research Institute (ABRI), one of the founders of the International Society of the Friends of Aetherometry, a member of its Organizing Committee, a co-inventor of the HYBORAC[3] technology and one of the main evaluators of ABRI[4] technologies.

His alternative energy research included studying the reproduction of Wilhelm Reich's Orgone Motor by Dr. Paulo Correa and Alexandra Correa, as well as the evolution of heat in the Reich-Einstein experiment. He was among the scientists and engineers who claimed to have confirmed the output of excess electric energy from tuned pulsed plasmas in vacuum arc discharges.

Mallove's combative stance against what he saw as the hypocrisy of mainstream science gave him a high profile. Among other things, he was a frequent guest on the American radio program Coast to Coast AM.

He is also credited as a "cold fusion technical consultant", for providing advice to the producers of the movie The Saint from 1997, with a plot revolving around cold fusion formulas.

In 1981 he and Gregory Matloff wrote a classic paper about using solar sails to reach Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to our sun. They calculated that the trip would take several hundred years and that the ship would have to withstand gravity accelerations of 60 g.[5][6] They wrote several papers on that and other proposed methods of space travel, such as the laser propelled Bussard ramjet,[7] and exotic fuels that could give very high power.[8]

Death

Eugene Mallove was killed on May 14, 2004 in Norwich, Connecticut, while cleaning a recently vacated rental property owned by his parents, the home he grew up in. The nature of Mallove's work led to some conspiracy theories[9] regarding the homicide, but police suspected robbery as the motive.[10]

In 2005, two local men were arrested in connection with the killing.[11][12][13] The case proceeded slowly[10] and the charges against the two men were finally dismissed on November 6, 2008.[14]

On February 11, 2009, the State of Connecticut announced a $50,000 reward[15] leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder. On April 2, 2010, the police made two arrests in connection with the murder and said that more arrests were expected.[16] [17] On May 22, 2011, a state prosecutor said that they were charging a third person in connection with the killing. Court testimony indicates that Mallove may have been killed by an evicted tenant who was angry about belongings being disposed of during the clearout.[18]

Murder most foul on UK queen's estate
MEERA SELVA and GREGORY KATZ

The Associated Press

UK police: Body found on queen's estate was murder UK police: Murder suspected on queen's estate

LONDON - It's a case that Sherlock Holmes would have loved to unravel: British police say a woman's body has been found at the vast rural estate where Queen Elizabeth II and her family celebrated New Year's.

Police are treating the case as a murder, and an autopsy was being conducted Tuesday to learn more about the cause of death and the identity of the victim.

The body was found on New Year's Day three miles (5 kilometers) from the elegant country home of Sandringham in eastern England, where the royals held a New Year's Day celebration in rural splendor.

Parts of the nearly 20,000-acre (8,000-hectare) estate are open to the public, and the body was found in a forest at Anmer, a hamlet of several dozen people 115 miles (185 kilometers) northeast of London on the estate grounds.

Most of the senior royals were at the sprawling Sandringham estate, where the queen loves to celebrate Christmas with her husband, children and grandchildren. The royals New Year's celebration marked a milestone in the recovery of Prince Philip, the queen's 90-year-old husband, who made his first public appearance since recovering from a heart procedure over the Christmas holiday.

So far, there are more questions than answers about the strange discovery, which has shaken the normally quiet region where the queen and her family typically enjoy riding horses and holding shooting parties.

Buckingham Palace officials are keeping mum about the murder case, referring callers to the police, and police have released few details. It is not yet clear how old the victim was, how long her body had been in the woods, if she was murdered on the grounds or if her remains were put there.

"We are at the very early stages of the investigation and it could be a complex inquiry," Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry said Tuesday. "The body had been there for some time."

Fry said authorities were examining missing person reports and unsolved cases around the country to see if there were any possible links.

"I cannot confirm whether she was clothed because, at the moment, only my staff, the person who found the body and the person or people who put it there know that and I would like it to stay that way," he said. "The body was found by a dog walker and was not underground. At this stage we do not know who the victim is."

The grisly find has further marred what had already been a difficult holiday season for the royal family. Their normal events were interrupted two days before Christmas when Philip suffered chest pains and had to be sent by helicopter to a Cambridge hospital for emergency treatment to clear a blocked coronary artery.

He was released in time to enjoy the New Year's Day church service at a chapel on the estate, which has served as a private residence for British monarchs since 1862.

Elizabeth and Philip remain in residence at Sandringham House, along with one of her sons, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie.

The estate has two stud farms and a fruit farm and employs more than 100 full-time staff.
