t's plausible that Lindbergh was attempting a 'practical joke' and unable to hold onto him while wearing gloves on a cold march evening, dropped his squirming child to his death, letting go of him to keep himself from falling when the step broke. But I don't think that's what happened. I believe it was an actual kidnapping, but I have no idea by whom. It is also plausible that Hauptmann was involved, but I do not think he was.

What's curious is the assistant truck driver, William Allen, who found the child's partly buried body some 45' off the roadway. One must ask, what was he doing there? Was he involved? Was he just taking a leak? Right there?

My grandfather had been a newsreel cameraman for Fox Movietone and was in the courtroom for the entire trial. We had the original onionskin copies of the typed transcript and I remember reading them as a youngster, not aware of their historical importance. My grandfather also filmed Lindy's take-off from Roosevelt Field; footage many of you may have seen. This footage is also historic filmographically for another reason: it was the first to every carry its own sound track.

Jeezus, that maid is fugly!

Undoubtedly, whomever was carrying the child down the ladder dropped him when the ladder brokefer. I doubt Lindbergh could have dismembered his own child. There's not enough presented in the evidence to determine whether some feral animal caused the dismemberment, though that too is possible.

"On May 12, 1932, the body of the kidnapped baby was accidentally found, partly buried, and badly decomposed, about four and a half miles southeast of the Lindbergh home, 45 feet from the highway, near Mount Rose, New Jersey, in Mercer County. The discovery was made by William Allen, an assistant on a truck driven by Orville Wilson. The head was crushed, there was a hole in the skull and some of the body members were missing. The body was positively identified and cremated at Trenton, New Jersey, on May 13, 1932. The Coroner's examination showed that the child had been dead for about two months and that death was caused by a blow on the head."

I suspect the ransom demand was extortion instigated by the servants who knew what really happened, especially given Lindbergh's well-known kidnapping pranks. Alternatively, it could have been hush money made to look like a ransom.

'Cemetery John' sheds new light on Lindbergh baby kidnapping

JENNIFER H. CUNNINGHAM

Sunday, June 17, 2012

The Lindbergh baby kidnapping was masterminded by a Bronx deli clerk who got away with it scot-free, a new book asserts.

In “Cemetery John” (Overlook, $26.95), author Robert Zorn says Bronx deli worker John Knoll was jealous of Charles Lindbergh’s fame. By kidnapping the aviator's toddler, the text argues, Knoll believed he would show that he was just as powerful as Lindbergh.

“It was probably the greatest unsolved crime in American history,” Zorn, 54, says. “This guy was a real villain. This was a guy who always had to draw attention to himself. His behavior was bizarre.”

Report: FBI informant armed and trained Black Panther

By Arturo Garcia
Monday, August 20, 2012 13:17 EDT

A video published Monday by the Center for Investigative Reporting reveals that the man responsible for arming and training members of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s did so while acting as a federal informant.

According to reporter Seth Rosenfeld, Richard Aoki was approached by FBI agent Burney Threadgill Jr. in the late 1950s, around the time he was graduating high school, and developed into a source into the activities of various political groups during the following decade.

“I said, ‘Well, why don’t you just go to some of the meetings and tell me who’s there and what they talked about?’” Threadgill is quoted as saying. “Very pleasant little guy. He always wore dark glasses.”

Aoki, who committed suicide in 2009 after working as an educator for 25 years following his involvement with the party, has been remembered for his activism. He was the subject of the biography Samurai Among Panthers: On Race, Resistance And A Pardoxical Life, which traced his ascent within the organization, where he became the highest-ranking non-black member of the party.

Rosenfeld wrote that he discovered Aoki’s double-identity while researching a book of his own, scheduled for release this week. He also noted that Aoki disputed the allegation during a 2007 interview, saying he thought Rosenfeld was mistaken before adding, “People change. It is complex. Layer upon layer.” Aoki did, however, admit to “cutting a deal” with military authorities while serving in the U.S. Army, sealing the criminal record he had amassed in his youth.

Aoki would go on to serve in the Army reserves, during which time, Rosenfeld writes, he filed reports to Threadgill detailing his involvement in groups like the Communist Party, the Socialist Party, the Young Socialist Alliance and the Vietnam Day Committee. By the time Aoki met Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, when Newton and Seale were developing what would become the Black Panther Party’s 10-point program, Aoki had been assigned to another agent.

In his interview with Rosenfeld, Aoki said he provided weapons and training to the Panthers.

“I had a little collection, and Bobby and Huey knew about it, and so when the party was formed, I decided to turn it over to the group,” Aoki said. “And so when you see the guys out there marching and everything, I’m somewhat responsible for the military slant to the organization’s public image.”

Watch Rosenfeld’s report in its entirety below.
