Anyone ever hear anything about a town called Milton? it's up in northern California, not far from Modesto.

when I was in high school, kids would talk about how so and so's older brother went out to Milton with his buddies to "check it out"...the stories went from allegations of psycho hillbillies to allegations of a satanic church described as a white mausoleum with a pentagram on it....I heard some pretty crazy stories about it when I was around 13 or 14...as I got older I learned what an urban legend was, and figured everything I had heard about the town was just that, an urban legend.

But when Jeff went into the largely unpublicized stuff about the "Lacy Peterson-esque" murders around the bay area and the modesto/stanislas valley area, it got me wondering again.

I'm sure the stories were urban legends, or just outright bullshit...but I figured I'd ask on here just to see if anyone else had ever head anything.

I googled a bit on it. It's in Calaveras County (as in the Mark Twain story) and seems to be largely abandoned these days. It was at one point a railroad station. Wikipedia has an article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton,_California
,
and I found this picture of a collapsing schoolhouse: www.tranquilityimages.com/rp401.shtml

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Local lore about it has that it is a town that was founded by Old German Bretheren, or "dunkards".
It is scarcely more than a spot on the road. Last time I drove though there,I remember seeing a white farm house, the remains of a general type store? and what was a school? I will have to drive through there over the holiday weekend.
It seems to me the only sinister thing I could think about it was I believe the area was searched for Cyndi Vanderheiden's body, as she was purportedly dumped in a well somewhere in Calaveras County. But they also searched a lot of different areas, so take it for what it is worth

**I edited this to change the spelling on Cyndi's name**

Edited by: silverspringwoman at: 1/13/06 11:49 pm
