The title refers to the 1967 song "My White Bicycle" by Tomorrow, which was about Amsterdam's community bicycle program.

They could still get him out of office.
But instead, they want mass death.

Bet the trike road smoother, too.

Funny that, I always thought it was a subtle reference to certain illicit substances

130 arrested over cycles 'nuisance' during Olympic ceremony
TIM MOYNIHAN SATURDAY 28 JULY 2012

More than 130 people were arrested after defying police instructions not to cycle near the Olympics venues in east London during the opening ceremony, Scotland Yard said.
They were held for breach of Section 12 of the Public Order Act and for causing a public nuisance, a spokesman said.

Officers were aware that a monthly cycle procession was due to take place, and made several attempts to engage with riders to discuss their plans, he added.
"The procession usually attracts approximately 100 cyclists, but on this occasion around 400-500 people gathered near Waterloo at approximately 6pm. Officers believe this may have included other individuals or groups not normally part of the monthly procession.

"As the procession last night had the potential to cause serious disruption to the life of the community, the Metropolitan Police Service applied conditions under Section 12 of the Public Order Act. The participants in the procession were informed of these conditions."

The conditions included that it should end no later than 3am today, that participants must not enter any part of the Olympic Route Network (ORN), and participants must remain south of the River Thames.

Read this build detail about the very special bamboo tandem, pictured above. Consider this October, 2011 review of our Bamboo Adventure in Mountain Flyer Magazine. This duo road two bamboo touring bikes, fully-loaded, 18.5k miles over two years. Our bamboo tubes mitered together and bound by epoxy soaked hemp fiber create a frame whose most notable characteristic, beyond beauty, is this incredible vibration dampening. Enjoy this very thorough and well written article about our bamboo product. As well, please consider this recent feedback from a new Calfee Bamboo Pro owner.

Each of our bamboo frames requires over 40 hours of labor to build. Following an interview with the frame’s new owner, we hand select a bamboo tube set that will deliver characteristics consistent with the riders expectations and requirements. Every frame is made to order and every frame is unique. All bamboo bicycles are available in stock or custom geometries.

Our frame is made from bamboo that has been smoked and heat treated to prevent splitting. We finish the bamboo frames with satin polyurethane that functions as a vapor seal and allows the owner to maintain the bamboo frame as they would any metal or carbon frame. Lugs are made of hemp fiber. As is the case with all Calfee frames, we use a plant based high performance eco resin to create the required matrix. Importantly, we discovered that bamboo and carbon fiber have different rates or thermal dynamic expansion. Our early bamboo frames used carbon fiber, instead of hemp, to join the tubes and many of the joints failed over time. Our 10 year warranty protected those Calfee customers and they now enjoy our hemp-lugged bamboo bicycle frames.

http://www.zambikes.org/

OUR MISSION:
Zambikes exists to change lives by developing and providing efficient transport solutions throughout Zambia.

OUR VISION:
Zambikes vision is to be the leading supplier of high quality and customized bicycles and accessories in the Southern African region.

OUR VALUES:
Building grassroots relationships that lead to the empowerment of Zambians through job creation, skills training, and providing bicycles and bicycle accessories as tools.
Aiding in sustainable economic development throughout Zambia by providing high quality bicycles and bicycle trailers that are manufactured, assembled and serviced by Zambians.
Improving the quality of products imported into and products being exported from Zambia.
Providing customer service as a top priority.
WHAT WE DO:
Zambikes is a social business that manufactures, assembles and distributes high quality bicycles, bicycle ambulances and cargo bicycle trailers to the underprivileged, empowering individuals to fight the mindset of poverty and address the economic and social needs of Zambia.

My name is Antone Bwalya and I am the Production Coordinator at Zambikes. I have been working for Zambikes for about three years. I have learned carpentry, steel fabrication, bicycle mechanics and many other things in my time here. I now manage the farm and have to make sure things are done on time, materials are at the shop when they need to be, everyone is doing what they should be doing safely, and I am also in charge of quality control.

Last week I was able to travel 2,000 kms (1,300 miles) to northern Zambia to an area called Luwingu. It is a very rural area with bad roads, and with our recent rains the roads were even worse than normal. The Safe Mothers Action Group there had received 8 of our Zambulances a month earlier, and I visited to see how they were doing.

I already knew that these Zambulances had transported more than 40 mothers to rural health clinics to give birth. They have a great system where the women get a prenatal check up and get assigned a delivery week. The Zambulance will then pick them up on the desired week. Then they will stay at the clinic until they deliver the baby.

When I am in the workshop I often forget that we are not just building bikes or trailers. For many people, like the ones who belong to Safe Mothers Action Group in Luwingu, these Zambulances and bikes are the difference between life and death. This excites me knowing my work is not just a job but one that is changing and saving lives. I never realized what a difference these could make.

Thank you all. Through Zambikes you are not only supporting me by giving me training and a job, but together we are changing and saving lives. Please continue your support so that we can save more lives.

Our work

Each year we collect roughly 6,000 used bicycles and tons of used parts from our supporters around Greater Boston and New England.

We ship most of these bikes overseas to economic development projects through our International Programs in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Bikes that don't get shipped often land in our Youth Programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanics skills in the process of earning bikes to keep for themselves.

Our retail Bike Shop also reconditions and sells some of the donated bikes that we receive, employing many graduates of our programs. The Shop's profit from the bicycle sales, parts sales, and repairs goes towards funding our youth and international work.

Our Guiding Principles

The Bikes Not Bombs community:

Addresses the root causes of inequality, violence, and oppression

Supports the self-empowerment of individuals and communities as a means to achieve sustainable, effective social change.

Includes all people in the social change process in order to challenge the forces and effects of systemic oppression

Acts in solidarity with our local and international partners because this leads to collective understanding and strength

Commits to sustainable, equitable consumption of resources as critical to the health of our communities and our planet

Is courageous and bold in the face of injustice

Uses the bicycle as a powerful vehicle and tool for social change

Celebrates and builds upon the existing strengths of our partners and participants.

I have long wanted one of these... Bullitt cargo bikes. As it is, I make do with an old 90s steel mountain bike that Ive totally refurbished (with all new good quality parts), and added front and rear racks and front panniers so I can attach 4 bags, a handlebar bag and the front rack for hauling stuff - groceries or whatever - effective cargo capacity about 50-70 kg.
